00:00Welcome to Denton, Texas, home of the North Texas Mean Green, and the fans have been waiting
00:14since early this morning for the clash we have in store.
00:17Today, two teams get set to square off in an inter-conference battle in the American.
00:23As we'll see, the South Florida Bulls taking on one of the top five teams in the conference,
00:29the North Texas Mean Green, 3A Sports College Football, I'm Rhys Davis, joined here in the
00:35booth by a couple of legends, and yes, we do use that term loosely, David Pollack from
00:40the University of Georgia and former Gator Jesse Palmer.
00:43Guys, let's get down to the field.
00:48And the Bulls will put total effort and we'll get started.
00:52He'll bring it out.
01:00It's Coleman.
01:04Stopped at the 17, and he's probably second-guessing that return.
01:09The Mean Green offense will take the field and they'll get this thing underway.
01:13As we take a quick look at the impact players for today's game, what players did you guys
01:18look to for motivation to make an impact during your playing days, Jesse?
01:21Well, it was the guys we relied on each and every week.
01:24We came into the season expecting these types of guys to be our biggest weapons, and every
01:29week those were the guys that had to deliver for us in order to have success.
01:33And it's just fun to have those guys that are consistent.
01:36Like, they lead by example, then they start to learn their voice and lead the team.
01:40But every week, guys that you can count on, they punch the clock, and they're hard workers.
01:44Hey, man, if you're going to force incompletions when the QB's thrown to the tight end, you
01:48better be physical.
01:49Nice job with the hit, forcing that incompletion.
01:54Trying to move the sticks on third down through the air.
01:57Grabbed over the middle.
01:58It's Evans.
02:00They'll pick up the first down as he gets it out to the 27-yard line.
02:04Here's this offense with a fresh set of downs.
02:08When you're coming into this game, if they throw completions and get first downs, that's
02:12when they like to change up the tempo and go fast.
02:14You're seeing it here.
02:17Gets it out fast.
02:18And on the slant route, I love the location of the throw by the quarterback.
02:24He's not making it difficult on his receiver.
02:26He's putting the football out.
02:28Turning it on.
02:29Spins away.
02:33How about that play on the ground?
02:35They get him out of bounds at the 34.
02:38Looks as if we have an injury on that last play, and we'll take a break to check him out.
02:42North Texas really has it going on offense.
02:53Looking downfield on first down.
02:56Got it in the middle.
02:57It's Vaughn.
02:58And they pick up just a few on that completion.
03:02North Texas in the hurry up.
03:04I think that time offensively, you're just trying to take what the defense is giving you, right?
03:07They're playing zone coverage.
03:09You got your big fella just working right over the ball.
03:11It's an easy pitch.
03:12He is sacked way behind the line of scrimmage.
03:16Just a catastrophic play there.
03:20And these are the plays that defenses talk about, man.
03:22These are the ones that get you in those situations where you can win.
03:25You've given up some yards on this drive, but it doesn't matter.
03:28When you play a great job on second down and force the passing situation,
03:33now, man, you get that dime package ready.
03:35You get that pass rush package ready.
03:36And you're ready to go get the quarterback.
03:38Now, a lot of work to do to move the chains, keep this drive alive.
03:42After that earlier sack.
03:45Ready, go!
03:50On third and long, he's going to have to turn one loose downfield.
03:54Finds a man on the right.
03:56Lots of room to run.
03:57And he'll take it to the house.
03:59He got loose.
04:01Touchdown, North Texas.
04:04Quarterback's ability to read the field is huge.
04:06And also the anticipation, the timing.
04:09To be able to throw the football, Jesse, and hit a guy in stride so he can get run after the catch and get in the end zone,
04:15that was a nice job out there.
04:16Yeah, it's critical, David.
04:18Listen, a lot of times, touchdown passes aren't thrown into the end zone.
04:21You've got to read the coverage, hit the open guy, and let him do the rest.
04:26And the extra point makes it 7-0.
04:28Kickoff unit on the field, and this defense will be called on to protect this lead.
04:41On the run from inside his own five.
04:44Nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22.
04:49So the USF Bulls offense will get the ball for the first time.
04:55And for their sake, they better hope they've solved some of the turnover and protection issues
04:59that just plagued them in a nightmare of a game last week, David.
05:03It was not a good performance.
05:05And this offense has got to grow.
05:07It's got to get better.
05:08And they've got to find some ways to move the football.
05:12They've got to throw the football.
05:13But we can't turn it over.
05:15Jesse, those are the critical mistakes.
05:16More games are lost than won.
05:18And last week, too many turnovers for this quarterback.
05:21Well, they just had too many negative plays and too many turnovers in that game to win.
05:25They believe they've got the dudes offensively to win games so long as they stay on schedule.
05:30But when you're going backwards, and you're giving the offense on the other side more possessions
05:34because you turn it over, that's a recipe for disaster.
05:37And that's something they have to be able to avoid in this game.
05:40QB's got to be able to play on so many different levels.
05:43They've got to read coverages, know the snap count, know what everybody's doing.
05:46And then does a great job at the end making something out of nothing.
05:49Making a positive play, picking up a new set of downs, new set of problems for this defense.
05:55And that's a really nice play.
05:56It's impressive.
05:57When it's first down and the defense thinks you might be running the football, you still can line up.
06:01You can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little crease for your running back.
06:05After the three-yard pickup, they come to the line second and seven.
06:09Now the play fake.
06:12He's open on the right.
06:13They're in and out of bounds at the 45, a big play for this offense.
06:18They knew they could slip that tight end behind the backers with that play-action fake.
06:24Well, it's because I can't win, Reese.
06:25I have to play the run.
06:27You know, all these RPOs, all these different things.
06:29It makes me come up and use my eyes and play run.
06:33And these tight ends are so valuable to find space behind.
06:36Knew where he was going with the football the whole time because the big fella, he's always open.
06:41After picking up a couple at second and eight.
06:49Brown will throw it.
06:51Has to uncork this one off his back foot.
06:54Go to the sideline.
06:55And it's complete.
06:56And they've got a big play.
06:57And how about the big strike down the field?
07:01I love when offenses take shots down the field, try to make big plays.
07:06Now they're set up in the red zone.
07:11They'll keep it on the ground for first and goal.
07:14And he waltzes in for the score.
07:16Touchdown, Bulls.
07:18And this running back is so dangerous down close to the end zone.
07:23He's got wiggle.
07:24He's got great vision and burst.
07:26And he showed all of those attributes right there.
07:44Looking for the tie with the extra point.
07:48And they did tack on that extra point, but no problem.
07:52So it's a 77-yard touchdown drive.
07:55And what a way to finish it with a 9-yard touchdown run.
07:59They're getting set to kick it away.
08:01And that last score took a little oomph out of this crowd.
08:10Coming out with it, it's Coleman.
08:13Nothing wrong with the touchback.
08:15And they wish they had one right now.
08:17But he stopped at the 9-yard line.
08:20This offense is so deep in the hole, it looks like the end zone's at the end of the earth.
08:28Looking to throw on first down.
08:31And it's incomplete.
08:32If you're going to take a hit like that, you might as well hang on to the ball.
08:36Plenty of distance between them and the sticks here on second down.
08:39Couldn't connect on first down.
08:44Now back to the air.
08:46And the sack.
08:47All the way back at the 5.
08:50And he gets home again, continuing his production.
08:53Last week, two sacks.
08:55This week, already a sack in the first half.
08:57This guy has been on a sack terror.
09:00Now a lot of work to do to move the chains.
09:12Keep this drive alive after that earlier sack.
09:16Try and play action.
09:18Gets it out quickly.
09:20Runs through a tackle.
09:22There he goes.
09:23They get him stopped at the 26th, but that'll be enough for this offense to go work on first down.
09:30As a head coach, you love it when your quarterback is locked in early.
09:33Opening drive, throws a touchdown pass.
09:35Really nice throw up on that last play.
09:37Here in the second drive, he's firing on all cylinders.
09:41You can tell this guy did his homework coming into this game, and right now it's paying off.
09:49They'll run it from the gut.
09:51Pretty good job of running to get two there to the 32.
09:56Mean Green trying to convert on third and short.
10:00Looking to throw for it.
10:04Caught behind the line.
10:05It's Hawkins.
10:06So important to convert these third downs, and they get it done.
10:10They'll have it at the 42.
10:13Nice job by the quarterback.
10:14Seeing the receiver come over, getting him the football, making the first down.
10:18And they like to do this.
10:20And the quarterback will take a sack back at the 36.
10:25And that's what I like most about this defense.
10:27When you try to take shots and make big plays, they get to the quarterback.
10:31They get him on the ground.
10:32Their third sack of the day.
10:33And this is a unit that ranks in the top ten in sacks in the country.
10:37North Texas now has a ton of work to do here on second down.
10:50Back to pass.
10:57Hauls it in.
10:58They stop him almost immediately.
11:01Short gain there and still a little ground cover to pick up the first.
11:07On third down, he'll try to pick it up through the air.
11:10He's not going to make it.
11:13What a job by this defense to stop him in his tracks.
11:17Man down on the play as the officials take a break to let him be checked out.
11:25North Texas will have to putter the way.
11:28They'll put it away for the first time tonight.
11:30That thing was down for a while, but the big bounce carried it into the end zone,
11:42and it'll be a touchback.
11:45A lot of field in front of them as they open this possession from their own 20.
11:52To give.
11:56After the pickup of nine, it's second and one.
11:59It's got to feel good as an offense knowing that early in the drive,
12:03you can turn around, hand it off, get a push up front, go get positive yardage.
12:10Brown wants to pass.
12:12That pass is incomplete, but this has been a period in which the offenses have shined.
12:18How about these two running games so far?
12:22Dominance on the ground as we look at the first quarter stats.
12:29They fought to a standstill in the first.
12:34Let's see who gets the edge early in the second.
12:37So they go back to work after the break, and it is third down.
12:41Sends it back in motion.
12:47They'll try to pick it up on the ground.
12:50Love the job by the defense here with their eye discipline.
12:52That's an RPO.
12:53It can be tricky to locate the football, but they found the running back quickly.
12:57Those linebackers and DBs really came screaming down to the line of scrimmage to make that stop.
13:03They'll put a stop to that return as he gets it up to the 41-yard line.
13:11North Texas sends the offense back onto the field.
13:15That last one looked like a back-breaking drive, David, but they ended up hunting.
13:19Yeah, and they put some plays together, put some yards together,
13:22but the most important stat is putting points on the board.
13:26And this offense has to finish, Jesse, when they get across that 50-yard line
13:30and start getting in scoring territory.
13:31Yeah, there was some good execution, no doubt about it,
13:35but I think it's the critical down and distances, third down.
13:38Oh, he's got some space.
13:41Nice pick up there.
13:42Gets him the first down and sets him up at the 45-yard line.
13:47And after that long completion for the first down,
13:49did you see everybody sprinting to the line of scrimmage offensively?
13:53They want to go tempo right now.
13:57Pressure is effective from the defense.
13:59They knock him down just behind the midfield stripe at the 48.
14:04Man, this offense, they've got to find something.
14:07They've got to get in the rhythm somehow.
14:08So far, no success, not protecting the quarterback.
14:12Really, the only good thing I can say so far is they haven't turned the football over.
14:15They've already racked up big sack numbers.
14:24It's starting to snowball, and they are ready to go again.
14:28To the air on second down.
14:30Makes the catch.
14:31It's Hawkins.
14:33He's loose.
14:35Touchdown, Ming Green.
14:37He broke away from the defense, and they couldn't catch it.
14:42If I'm a play guard nowadays, man, I want more guys like this.
14:45Just versatility.
14:47You can see he can catch it out of the backfield like a wide receiver,
14:50or he can run it.
14:52Nice job catching the football with his hands,
14:54using his speed to do the rest and get into the end zone.
14:58They'll try to add another to their lead.
15:01And the extra point is true, and they're on top by seven.
15:10And let's check in with Kevin Connors in the studio.
15:12Kevin.
15:13Guys, it is now a final in Conference USA
15:15in a game I think a lot of folks will want to hear about.
15:20Jacksonville State just wrapped up four quarters worth of dominance
15:24on its way to a never-in-doubt victory.
15:27And that's really the standard there at JSU.
15:30They'll enjoy this one all week.
15:34Guys, I look at the preseason coaches poll
15:36and compare it to where CUSA is right now,
15:39and man, what a difference.
15:41Kevin, thanks a lot for that one.

15:49Run game is good. Balance is good.
15:51Now listen, if the run game isn't good,
15:53then you've got to pass the football a little bit more,
15:55but sometimes you've got to keep them honest,
15:57take them chunk by chunk.
15:58They'll run play action.
16:01Fires downfield.
16:03He's got an open man.
16:05And they'll spot it at the 38,
16:07and that'll be plenty for the first down.
16:10Nice job by the receiver on the back end there, too.
16:12He sees his quarterback on the run moving,
16:14and he just works to get himself open
16:16to give his guy a place to throw the football.
16:19They're able to connect, and they keep the drive going.
16:21It's 1st and 10 from the 38-yard line.
16:30Here's the handoff.
16:32Breaks him to the open.
16:34Nice pickup there.
16:35Gets him the first down and sets him up at the 45-yard line.
16:38Well, obviously, the offense went 3-and-out on their last drive.
16:42They're having a little bit more success here.
16:44That was a nice run, and I think that's the key, guys.
16:47If they're able to run the football,
16:49they're going to be able to stay on the field.
16:51And I think that's something you want to think more about
16:53if you're the play caller on offense.
16:55Great job by the defense.
16:58Everybody firing off the ball, hitting their guys,
17:00holding their gaps, running to the football, nowhere to go.
17:03The Bulls have put themselves in dire straits after that last play.
17:07It's 2nd and a mile.
17:09That's reeled in.
17:10It's Franklin.
17:12He gets it inside the 30 and out of bounds at the 29,
17:16and they are rolling.
17:18And that's why if you're the offensive coordinator,
17:20you've got to find as many ways as possible to get this guy going.
17:23Just get him the ball, close to the line of scrimmage.
17:26Doesn't need to be a throw deep down the field.
17:28He's so dynamic when he has the ball in his hands.
17:31You saw it right there.
17:32Kovs sweating there as he picks up 1 to the 29.
17:37Picked up 2 yards on that last one.
17:39They need 8 on 2nd down.
17:43Off the play fake.
17:45Quarterback extends the play.
17:48Trying to make magic with his feet.
17:51Run out of bounds.
17:52They'll spot him at the 24.
17:55Really nowhere for the quarterback to go that time.
17:57I like the idea of letting him try to run with it,
17:59but no opportunity to get up the field.
18:01So he just kept trying to use his speed going sideways.
18:05Defense took everything away,
18:06and a good decision by him to save a hit
18:08and just get out of bounds.
18:11Yeah, and 3rd and short.
18:12They choose not to run, throw the football,
18:14and I think a lot of that has to do with
18:15they know they're in field goal range.
18:17They can take the 3 points on the board.
18:20And on 4th down, they'll try to put 3 on the board.
18:23And this will be a 41-yarder coming up from the right side.
18:28What a disappointment.
18:30No good.
18:32And they couldn't cut into the lead.
18:34It's still a 7-point game.
18:36Man, sometimes I just feel like 4th down, man,
18:39just go for it every time.
18:40Like, the field goal, miss, make, rate.
18:43And listen, kickers have improved the last couple of years,
18:45but left some points off the scoreboard there.
18:48No reason to be in a big rush.
18:50They have some time here late in the half.
18:52Wants to throw on 1st down off the play fake.
18:59Grabbed in the backfield.

19:02They make the stop,
19:03trying to pick up just a little bit at a time
19:05to get to that 1st down marker.

22:58Seems to me, and I know I'm going to sound like a coach here,
23:01the team that limits turnovers and strings together productive drives
23:05is going to be the one celebrating a well-earned victory today.

23:35Let's see what he gets.
23:37He was looking for more running room, but none to be found as he stopped at the 23.
23:42South Florida has it back, and the Bulls' offense will return to the field.
23:47First drive of the 2nd half, always fun to watch.
23:49You see what type of tweaks were made in the half,
23:52especially when you're locked up in a ballgame like this one.
23:54Yeah, and it's been a good game.
23:56I mean, it's been a little bit of back-and-forth and a feeling-out process,
23:59and now once you get in the 2nd half, who's going to get aggressive, Palmer?
24:02Who's going to take some shots, try to make some plays, and really go for it?
24:06Yeah, it's interesting.
24:07I think as play callers right now, you learn a lot about these coaching staffs
24:10with respect to who does make the best adjustments.
24:13There's a lot of coaches that believe we're just going to be who we are.
24:16We're going to keep doing what we do.
24:17We're just going to do it better.
24:19But then there are others that tweak things a little bit on offense and on defense.
24:23We're going to find out here.
24:24The slants are very tough to cover,
24:26but they become way tougher when you've got a big body wide receiver like that.
24:30It's almost like basketball where he's boxing you out.
24:32He gets inside real quick, uses that big body to shield you off.
24:36And even if you're playing man-to-man,
24:38you just got to get him on the ground and try to disrupt him some way.
24:40After picking up a couple, it's second and eight.
24:52The play-action fake.
24:54Unloads it left.
24:56Makes the grab.
24:57It's Wolfe.
24:58He makes the stop at the 48.
25:00That'll be enough for a first down and a pickup of 10.
25:02It is great to have a tight end that can do it all
25:07and one that can get downfield and make a play.
25:09And I like matching and mixing and matching up the play-fake on play-action with this tight end
25:14because it just gives him a little more time to work his route down the field.
25:19Nice play call there by the coordinator.
25:21Ready?

25:23To the ground with the back.
25:26How about that defense getting back there?
25:28He'll lose a couple.
25:29They're trying to run the football.
25:32There's just nowhere to go for the ball carrier inside.
25:35He tried to bounce it to the outside.
25:37That linebacker way too fast.
25:38He met him there and forced the TFL.
25:42Brown wants to pass.
25:44Well, the quarterback can make a big play when he starts moving around.
25:48They bring him down, but a solid pickup to put them in position to pick up a first down.
25:54And this is the hard part about being on defense
25:56and choosing whether to be conservative or bring the blitz.
25:59They bring the blitz.
26:00He sees it.
26:01And that's what he does really well.
26:03Sees it and immediately makes a decision.
26:05Gets to some green grass and gets a positive game for this offense.
26:10He'll step out of bounds.
26:11He's at the 33-yard line.
26:14How nice is it as a play call on a critical third down
26:18in a pretty obvious passing situation
26:20when you've got a guy like this that can just take off
26:23and go get you the first down, right?
26:24There's no panic.
26:25Nothing's open downfield.
26:27Great job in coverage, but that's not a problem
26:29because I just know it's like backyard football.
26:31Hits him in stride at the 10.
26:33And he takes it all the way down to the 10-yard line.
26:37An explosive play for this offense.
26:40And this quarterback wasn't thinking about taking off and running with that one.
26:43He was outside the pocket, but he kept his eyes down the field.
26:46He kept reading the coverage.
26:48He was surveying to find an open target.
26:51Accurate throw, and they get the first down.
26:52From the gun, running back gets to give.
26:56Flipping through the defense.
26:58That's about as close as you can get to that marker,
27:01and it will be second and just a few breaths away from the first down.
27:05It will be second down, and remember, they can pick up a first without scoring.
27:26Set.
27:27Action.
27:28Hut.
27:29The quarterback sneak, looking to eke out a few yards.
27:32Touchdown, South Florida.
27:35And that one will put him up here in the second half.
27:39The defense knew coming into this game they were going to have their hands full.
27:43Not only did they have to worry about these running backs and their running game,
27:46they had to worry about the quarterback as well.
27:48On designed runs and on scrambles, they didn't have an answer for him right there.
27:53Lining up to tack one more onto that lead.
28:00And the extra point is true, and they're on top by seven.

29:46And this team needs more of that, man.

29:51You've got to get these stops down the stretch and meet the physical challenge of this offense.

29:57And that's one step closer to getting this football back and maybe making this thing a football game.

30:23As soon as you see him get upfield, right now you know it's passed.
30:26So don't even worry about the fake.
30:27Get your eyes focused and find the big fella to go make a tackle or make a play on the ball.
30:32What a nice job by the defense to string it out, not give him any kind of alley and knock him down for a loss.

32:56But the defense, they've risen to the occasion.
32:58Their front seven has dominated this entire game.

33:05And they can't hook up on the big play, and that brings up a fourth down.
33:10Well, the defense didn't get caught napping there in this situation.
33:14You know they have to stay alert for the deep ball.

34:03And here comes the heat, and they get home, and they get him at the 21.
34:08When it's a play action pass, that quarterback, he really has to sell the fake.
34:12He can't tell his offensive lineman's getting beat right away while he's selling the fake.

34:17Now, a lot of work to do to move the chains, keep this drive alive after that earlier sack.
34:24He's going to lose a yard on that one.
34:27You've got to wonder about the play call there.
34:29Third and long, hoping to catch the defense off guard, napping, but they weren't fooled.
34:34They made a play, got the tackle for loss.
34:36Now you've got fourth in California.
34:38North Texas sends the offense back onto the field.
34:47They hope to be able to cash in on this drive, David, after having to punish last time.
34:51Yeah, and I think this offense needs to start it with the first play.
34:54You need to be successful and productive on that first play,
34:57and it gets you in less predictable situations.

36:27And I'll tell you what, it's really nice at this point in the game if you can lean on your run game.
36:31When you have the lead, you've got the football late in the game,
36:35you can shoot that clock and start to really make that defense have a little bit of panic.
36:41Brown will throw it.
36:43Might be looking to run.
36:45Fires on the move.
36:46A strike downfield.
36:49Perhaps a touchdown saving tackle at the 17.
36:52Defense uses a timeout quickly, trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense.

37:10He's stopped at the 14-yard line, and they'll stay on the attack from there.

39:27The offense continues to do what they do, and they take the two-scored lead in the 4th quarter,
39:32everything going in their direction.
39:34And the extra point is true, and they have a two-touchdown lead, up 14 in the 4th.
39:42A 69-yard touchdown drive.
39:45Kickoff unit on the field, and this defense will be called on to protect this lead.
39:53Fielded in the end zone, it's Coleman.
39:55He was looking for some running room, but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18.

40:07After three consecutive punts, we'll see if they can dial up something that can get this offense moving forward.

40:17Because you're trailing by so much so late in the game,
40:19the defense now is going to be playing big zone coverages,
40:21and they're going to allow you to throw the ball underneath in the middle of the field.
40:25Rally to make a tackle and bleed the clock.
40:27It's going to be hard now for this offense to claw their way back in this one.

40:36Second and short is a great situation to be in.

40:43He wants to be aggressive, but he can just take off and scramble.

42:55And listen, still a ways to go.
42:57But great job by this offense getting you back in the ball.
43:00Okay, now we've got a one-possession game.
43:03We've got our score we did what we're supposed to do.
43:06Now how do we get this stop?
43:07Now the defense has to come up big and get me the rock man.
43:13He'll try to tack on one more.
43:19And the PAT will draw them one point closer.
43:24They put together an 81-yard drive.
43:27And they finish things off with a 21-yard touchdown pass.
43:31Just over 50 seconds to go.
43:33They're trying to pull off a comeback.
43:35And they'll need to get this onside kick to do it.
43:38And this is why you put your hands, team, on the field most of the time.
43:41When you know it's coming and you put those guys that are great catchers of the football.
43:45The first guys, what do they do?
43:46They go block.
43:47They go blow somebody up.
43:48The next guys catch the football, secure it, get your butt on the ground.
43:51And most of the time when you do this, the ball game is over.
43:55And just wedges it ahead a bit before he's brought down.

44:03Keeping it on the ground with the running back.

44:46You have people that can focus in the moment or they can't.

44:59And you can tell there's tremendous leadership on this football team.
