00:00If you are part of the 30% of the country that has snow on the ground right now, like we are here in
00:04New York City, listen up. Do yourself a favor and hire the neighborhood kid to shovel your driveway.
00:11Trust, if you are of a certain age, just throw some money at the problem. A new study says that
00:16just 10 minutes of heavy snow shoveling can push the heart to 97% of its maximum rate. That's
00:24generally fine for young whippersnappers out there, but as we age, we should not exert ourselves
00:29quite so much. Don't threaten me with a good time, just as I'm saying that, that sounds
00:34lovely. And while there's no official age when it's too old to shovel snow, some cardiologist
00:40says father time does have a rough benchmark where you should just use more caution to lower
00:46chances of a cardiac event. And that number is lower than you think. 45. Now, not all 45-year-olds
00:53are the same, of course. If you tend to be less active, you may be at greater risk when you exert
00:58yourself, like, say, clearing the driveway of the white stuff. If you're doing Iron Man's,
01:02I'm no doctor, but you're probably good. The warnings do grow more dire when you hit 65,
01:08especially for the dudes. So if you must do it yourself, experts say take your time and limit
01:15lifting the snow. Pushing or sweeping it instead is apparently better. Also, try and warm the air
01:21that you're breathing by covering your nose and mouth, because cold air can actually make things
01:25worse. Who knew?
