00:00so the pole was in me from from here to here um kind of about there and up on the
00:06plateau
00:07we were able to release this handle to take it off so it was out of the way um but
00:13it was definitely
00:15a uh uh it was it was definitely a nuisance to be hiking out with all that
00:33so when it just described to me what it did so went in here came out down here
00:38um and it went through my lap muscle there
00:52so uh yeah we started from the trailhead about 3 30 in the morning
00:55um we were making great time pacing was good the weather was good everybody was feeling really
01:00good we just come across the boulder field on the froze to death plateau and we were getting ready
01:05on we're at the base of tempest peak and getting ready to kind of plan our ascent uh when i
01:12just
01:13had a really unfortunate slip and fall and uh i i remember um i'm rolling over and this kind of
01:22realization of like something's not right here and so i you know quickly realized i had this trekking
01:30pole stuck in my in my side and i was able to kind of quickly turn on my my nurse
01:36brain and assess
01:38everything and do a little little trauma assessment and i pretty quickly realized uh this was just in
01:45soft tissue and um was able to kind of talk to my friends a little bit and get uh get
01:53everybody on
01:53the same page that we were we were going to make the decision to hike out um i was pretty
01:57confident
01:58that i was going to be all right and so we we made a decision to hike out took us
02:03six and a half hours
02:04to make it across make it back down to the mystic lake trailhead um another about hour to the to
02:10the
02:10local to the stillwater billings clinic er and then um my friends drove me from there to the intermountain
02:17health er uh i feel pretty good um i had quite a bit of pain and swelling the first few
02:34days uh the
02:35swelling's gone down a bunch which has been really helpful for me being more comfortable
02:49you know search and rescue coming to help you is free the flight's not um and so i that was
02:57obviously a a factor in in me deciding to self-rescue but um the fact that i had two two
03:04experienced
03:06great friends with me um and we had the ability to contact search and rescue if something went wrong
03:12made that a lot more of an easy decision
03:25yeah when when i first saw that the pole was in him i i didn't think it was real initially
03:41he never complained at all like never was you know bummed out about being hurt or anything like that
03:47he was just head down navigating wanting to get off the mountain
