00:00crisis we've ever had we need to build homes faster and more efficiently for all budgets
00:07and all Australians and that's exactly what future house is all about we're building three houses for
00:17three families in just three months using three different budgets and three different modern
00:24methods of construction my mission with this project these houses must be stylish sophisticated
00:30and above all sustainable now we may not solve Australia's housing crisis but we're going to give
00:38this a red-hot guy so who are the three brave families who are joining us on this mission
00:47the Fox family from Blue Mountains New South Wales are building two modular homes on the
00:54same block so they can care for their disabled daughter Kate so here is where mummy's house is
01:00and this is a bit strange isn't it because mummy's got a house and daddy's got a house it hasn't been
01:05without its challenges it's definitely a lot of anxiety going on you know paying that last
01:10installment but in the race to the finish their two factory built houses are well on their way
01:16then there's the Quachini family from Canberra who are building a precast concrete home their home
01:23made a successful landing appearing so fast it was as if it had fallen from the sky it's all been in
01:30theory until this point it's a dream come true and my family of course the juries in the northern rivers of
01:37New South Wales our beautiful 3d concrete printed home is going nowhere fast DA is going in as we speak so
01:46we're keeping our fingers crossed this is impossible tonight I meet a family who hasn't had an energy bill
01:54in years so you're actually making money yeah from your own battery and we'll show you how you can do
02:01the same instead of getting charged we actually make money every year the Quachinis power ahead as
02:06Sarah takes charge two and then the fan and then two time to add some personal touches do you want to
02:13put your hand print on them that's it good girl after months of red tape and financial stress the
02:21foxes get some good news ready to put it on the truck next week and deliver as house day arrives
02:28certainly everything changes you've got to start again a new life but for me it seems disaster is
02:37still around every corner such a small amount of time jamming I can't give those ideas oxygen if I
02:44can't even get a DA approved so I take matters right to the top is Australia the home of red tape
02:51red tape's a massive problem despite all the challenges we're pushing this to the limit we're
03:05two months into our three month long mission to build the house of the future I've come to Canberra
03:11to check on how the Quachinis are going with their future house well I have just driven past the site
03:19and it seems there's a house there and there wasn't a couple of weeks ago
03:26my how are you you've built a house pretty much yeah wow she's a decent
03:49size isn't she it's a custom 300 square meter home it's not your average four bedroom takes up
03:55nearly the whole block custom rake seal and steel yeah mate I don't think I've ever seen anything go
04:02up this quickly you've got the roof and the walls and the slab all in place and you're 11 days in
04:11correct it's incredible it's a good way to build isn't it oh mate
04:15after years of planning and months of red tape and heartache for Sean and Sarah the speed with which
04:23their house has gone up is certainly welcome news you've got a house yeah we do wow yeah we do look at
04:29the last time I was here it was just with garden yes yep the progress in the time frame is just
04:35phenomenal just went up so fast it's just really lovely and exciting to see because you can finally
04:42get to see it in three dimensions it's not just not just a picture on the paper that you've had in your
04:47for a long time this is actually how it's going to feel it's deeper than it was last time it is a
04:53little bit because your house seems to have sunk yes yes just a little bit we were expecting to be
04:59entering right about here yeah walking straight in the ACT solar encroachment rules resulted in the
05:05quichinis having to lower the level of their house and cop an additional 31k in excavation costs
05:12which means that their new home is sitting in a big costly hole well I gotta say um I quite like
05:21it because it really feels like it's invested into the landscape now yeah I quite like it too actually
05:27yeah and actually what's happened now that the house is low is you're looking straight at the garden
05:33instead of staring at everyone on the street yes um now what's this room this is going to be the gym
05:41the gym yeah so bougie one of the big things about our design was having a place that we could just
05:47take care of ourselves yeah yeah because we've always been living in small spaces with everyone
05:51on top of each other yeah and I do a lot of physio and a lot of rehab because of injuries
05:56yep Sarah it's right yeah we can't get to the gym it's impossible isn't it since I've had kids
06:02I've put on five kilos only five mate yes thanks so much thanks so much this is the kids playroom oh
06:11yeah great nice access into the garden these are kids bedrooms yeah one two three yep their space is
06:19right next to them they can easily just walk straight out yeah play in the garden and then
06:22and then the parents are at the front of the house yes guarding the family yes and this is your big lofty
06:30northern outlook that's our northern aspect sucks in all that beautiful winter sun so good yeah it's
06:37nice to actually see it and be like yes this is great this is you know what we wanted it's just all
06:43happening faster than I knew it would be quick but it's all just happened very very quick safe to say
06:49you'll definitely be in well before Christmas yes would you like to hear how mine's going yes yes please
06:55we haven't even laid the slab yet yeah yeah I know I know you find that hilarious once the slab goes in
07:07yeah all the rest of the components will be 3d printed at least that's what I hope
07:14in the blue mountains of New South Wales Michael and Helen's vacant block is being prepped for the
07:23arrival of their twin modular homes in terms of site works per se like a traditional builder there's
07:31very little work that we have to do for site works or hardly any that's because the houses are completely
07:37finished in the factory and then loaded onto trucks and delivered both Fox homes are at the eight week mark
07:45and they're almost complete the only thing left is to drop it in on site by end of this week we
07:52would have had all of the what we call finish offs and fit offs everything completed and then soon
07:57after that it'll be rocking up for installation hello hi Rex how are you really really nice to see you
08:12your house has come leaps and bounds we are pretty much ready to put it on the truck and deliver okay I'm
08:21going to show it show you I'm going to flip the camera around okay it's still painting on the way
08:25you're almost done Sonny almost done all your bench top phone bench tops but they are non-carcinogenic
08:33obviously no silica Wow so it's been cut already fantastic and my sink is in oh my gosh look at that
08:40looks so good I love it love it love it love the cabinetry is beautiful your tiling is done oh it's
08:49gorgeous no it's beautiful workmanship thank you thank you Helen thank you Michael it's a great pleasure
08:56while the quichinis from Canberra and the foxes from the Blue Mountains have both made spectacular
09:03progress building their homes I'm stuck in limbo waiting for my development application
09:10to be approved we're battling the clock and time is our enemy even my builders are losing confidence I
09:18think it's just like such a small amount of time Jamie you know I would I just want to I want to give it
09:24a red-hot go the hard facts are putting DA's in is a punish it's slow it's laborious I need to ramp
09:33this up if we're going to get this thing built well we're off to the town planners office weeks are
09:43slipping by and I've still got nothing from council not even a notice I'm not just worried I'm up at night
09:55not just for the show but for the family I promised Amika I wouldn't put her through it all again and here
10:07we are again things have been stalling and I'm not going to hit this deadline I mean my whole life's
10:14hanging on this it's not just my family and I it's a whole bunch of really fantastic motivated partners
10:27who are doing inspirational things in the sustainability space but I can't give those
10:33ideas oxygen if I can't even get a DA approved well we're off to the town planners office weeks are
10:53slipping by and I've still got nothing from council I mean my whole life's hanging on this
10:59okay there might be some light at the end of this tunnel I just had a great meeting with the planners
11:10NDC planners here in Lismore are bending over backwards to help me which is great I explained
11:18to them that it'll be an off-grid situation it's the second 3d printed house in Australia so this is
11:25really making history we're really doing a lot of innovative stuff so hopefully with that in mind and
11:31a decent letter we might be able to get this over the line and get it built before the deadline two
11:41fingers crossed please that's one bit of good news but now I've got another hurdle to overcome
11:49will my 3d print actually work a few weeks ago I was left devastated when the first test print of a
12:02concrete column for our dream 3d printed future house crumbled before my very eyes
12:08since then there's been several more failures
12:13what was the problem the two accelerators that we use weren't actually mixed together properly so
12:20now I'm back again for one last test wow we're getting there right this is this is this could this
12:33might actually happen so if we can't make this work I think I'll book a ticket overseas and I'll never
12:41see Jamie ever again so the whole job is relying on obviously we're printing the structure here
12:46we're on our fourth test in the last sort of 10 minutes but so we're dialing it in I'm putting on a
12:54brave face but to be honest my confidence is shaken if this column doesn't get to three meters
13:00we don't have a house you got your 11 secret herbs we do but we're accelerating this mix right at the
13:09head so in here we're pumping in a liquid based accelerant right just so that it'll cure so it can
13:15take the next layer on top we've got a 38 second lap time at the moment but look as we dial it in
13:20we'll get down to about a 20 second lap time I imagine yeah so we're getting there we're gonna get
13:24there we have to get there bugger all this technical stuff I just want to get it to three meters or about
13:31three times my height look we're doing a hell of a lot of testing now and we haven't got long to get
13:37it right because this is a brand new print head it's a brand new sort of methodology for us to be
13:42able to print vertically in one go very fast we've got two more layers left it's about three meters high
13:58pushing to 3.1 so I'm confident semi-confident mate you did it we did you did it finally I won't tell you
14:11I was concerned satisfaction absolutely only another 32 to go that's true actually in Canberra
14:26the Cochini's new precast concrete home has come a long way it's a bit different with the roof on
14:32isn't it is different with the roof on it's cooler in here too now yeah with the ResiCast process once
14:39the walls come in the house is built just like any other house so it's another big day for owner
14:45Sarah and Builder Mick as the electricals and plumbing are being roughed in well it's good to
14:51have the boss on site really the other fella talks too much just saying sleep yes we should be right
15:00and like all mums with young kids Sarah doesn't have time to muck around so I'm with lights so we've got
15:07one over the lounge area and one over the dining yep and then we also we're going to get some down
15:12lights yeah two and then the fan and then two right one two yep the fridge and the ovens are next to
15:18the fridge yep got those two ovens one above the other yep we're going to get a robot vacuum so that
15:23has been a dream for a while I'm optimistic all the toys will stay in the playroom oh yes never happens
15:28so there's the shower yep which I sort of marked out that's roughly where your baths going to be
15:34yes we're going to put niches in now instead of well dude what's going to have a shelf
15:40glad I was here to sort out a few tiling things that I thought about but didn't actually tell anyone
15:50oh I know I'm a pain should have sent Sean here instead yeah fun long though a bit longer bit longer
16:02I have a lot of things because I'll be sitting with my head at that end yeah yeah yeah sit in the
16:10bath with my wine this is actually Sarah time it's actually mick may have built the house but it's clear
16:15who's in charge now lock all the doors sit in the bath now the kids will be down there so I won't be
16:20able to hear them screaming I'll just be in my little oasis down here hello I'm waking up or is
16:27she oh we're gonna be cranky no we're cranky our time in the northern rivers on the farm with the
16:40kids and my beautiful amika is just idyllic the fresh air the rolling hills and the farm animals
16:48there's only one thing missing in my hashtag farm life something every fair dinkum farmer needs
16:56full range that's a lot of tractors we have 30 different categories yeah and over 100 different
17:10models sold about 35 000 different machines wow turns out buying a tractor is a little trickier than
17:20I thought fortunately I've got my mate Dazza on hand to guide me through tractor 101 mate this is amazing
17:27that's what you need in a paddock big slasher tinted glass oh air-conditioned Australia wow who's going to be teaching me
17:38unfortunately me
17:39farm life here we come
17:46I've got a new toy for the farm and uh it's safe to say it's my favorite toy
17:57I can dig anywhere I like I can plant I can tow I can trench I can do anything with this thing it's amazing
18:14what are you doing I thought this would be great and us working side by side
18:20this is a dream come true mate not for me is it
18:29watch this you ready dump in the low
18:33I think you should stick to his day job but maybe just do this one day on the weekends
18:48oh my gosh
18:53now I'm all about healthy sustainable homes and the cochinis are getting a new system that brings
18:59new meaning to fresh air today we're putting in a hrv system yep this is a heat recovery ventilation
19:06system basically what's the system designed to do so basically what we're going to do here is
19:11we exchange all the entire air of the house yep in two hour cycles or three hour cycles you don't
19:16have to open any windows any doors anymore you can keep them shut yep and you get constantly fresh air
19:23to prevent mold and moisture build up in the homes yep you need actually a ventilation system for a
19:28healthy home basically pretty much
19:35the cochinis are setting up a happy healthy home however the australian building landscape
19:40is anything but amidst a housing crisis building a house in australia is too hard too slow and simply
19:48too expensive so i'm going to the top to find out what can be done about this well here we are at
19:55parliament house i'm in the courtyard and we're about to meet the minister for housing minister
20:02o'neill now what minister claire o'neill doesn't know is that i'm going to ask her for a bit of a favor
20:09thank you so much for making time for us today because you have a big job on your hands that's
20:15absolutely right dami we've got in australia today millions of people who are in some form of housing
20:20distress the federal government's got a goal of trying to build 1.2 million homes in five years
20:26but we're not going to get there unless we see more innovation in housing we are building homes in
20:31australia basically the same way that we were 40 years ago and if we're going to build faster we need
20:36that to change so what are we doing about making the practice of building your own home more affordable
20:44and more simple well one of the main things that we can do is support innovation in housing so we'd
20:49like to see builders trying new ways of doing things and we know that the evidence overseas shows us
20:54that we actually can build homes a lot faster and a lot more efficiently so on our project we're looking
21:00at tilt slab construction where you can have a house to lock up in 10 days oh my gosh however
21:07the council restrictions took them four to six months is australia the home of red tape red tape's
21:15a massive problem i spend a lot of time talking to builders and they say to me you know claire the
21:20hard part used to be actually building the house now it's working through that thicket of red tape that
21:25lies in the path of them just laying that first brick one of the challenges is that we've got three
21:30levels of government in australia and for that 40-year period all those three levels of government
21:35have just been adding on new layers of red tape and regulation now for that favor i was talking about
21:42claire we're lucky enough to have the green building council of australia as one of our judges
21:46as we judge these three different modern methods of construction we would love it if you would come
21:52out and help us judge these new homes absolutely jamie you had me in a low oh yeah that would be great
22:00coming up the big call i've been waiting for but is it good news did you speak with council
22:07amazing and and the fox's homes hit the road it's a really an exciting job that we have here
22:22on our farm in the northern rivers the warmer weather means everything is suddenly bursting into life
22:29everything except for one small thing our 3d printed house
22:42damien yes mate yes did you speak with council amazing and
22:50yes we got approval oh mate that's the best news i've had in years you it's incredible thank you so
23:01much for letting me know cheers thank you yes we got approval i cannot believe this that has to be an
23:10absolute record so byronshire council said that they wanted to work with us because we were building
23:19something that was meaningful sustainable something that hopefully may spark a bit of change and
23:25they've done it they've pulled it off
23:33in the blue mountains of new south wales the foxes share the same determination to bring their future
23:39houses to life not even a blast of cold and wet can stop the final preparations for the delivery of their
23:45two modular homes water mains are being connected
23:53and the holes dug for the piers on which the modular homes will rest
23:59so right now we're just drilling this second module and we're just going a bit slower now because
24:05there's all those big tree roots yeah this this is a big job
24:18it's all happening quickly now it's got to this stage the modules when they arrive will be craned
24:24into position and fixed into the concrete footings leaving the comfort of our nice rental home and it's
24:30exciting but it's uh you know a bit of fear too suddenly everything changes you've got to start
24:38again a new life and uh it should be good it should be good i'm sure we'll be happy once we get in there
24:45and uh you know yeah once we get rid of the drama of moving
24:51it's my firm belief that every house in australia should have a solar and a battery solution you
25:00might remember last week that we helped sort out the fox's solar system what we're going to do
25:05for you guys is supply and install 10 to 15 kilowatt of solar per house
25:12now i know that some of you may need a little more convincing or information on the benefits of a
25:17solar and battery solution but what if i told you it's possible to never pay an energy bill again
25:24and on top of that you can even make money well i'm about to meet a family who i'm told has done
25:31exactly that you got rid of your old energy retailer and swapped and moved over to amber these guys are the
25:40new energy market disruptors in essence their software runs your electricity supply you don't really
25:47have to think about it every day there's two peaks of power in australia electricity becomes expensive
25:52when everyone gets home from work yes and first thing in the morning yes your solar system's got
25:57a battery you store that energy in your battery and then when the peak price happens they launch any
26:02extra power you've got in your battery that you're not using in your house they sell it back to the
26:07grid at the peak price and if you make any money between those two levels they pass those profits back
26:13to you correct that's our current bill uh for amber you're in credit yeah for 2300 instead of getting
26:22charged we actually make money every year you are a future house yeah we're living in the future
26:31installing solar and batteries isn't just good for the environment it's also good for your hip
26:36pocket but it does take a little upfront investment well there's a brand new tool that
26:41can help you improve your home's energy efficiency and even help you finance it combank has developed
26:47the home energy assessment tool provided by home energy australia by simply entering your address
26:54into the online tool it calculates the energy efficiency of your house and provides options
27:00on how you can improve it including adding a solar system and batteries hey let's see how this thing
27:06works yeah sure good so it's pulling in all sorts of public information including aerial photos
27:14and there we have it it's low that doesn't look good that is very low so it's a 3.9 out of 10
27:21rather average so as you scroll down you can see it provides you some suggestions around
27:26what you can do to upgrade an obvious one is solar and you can see here it actually helps you understand
27:31how much you might save after that upgrade it even tells you how much it'll cost to install your solar
27:36panels and if you scroll down here it actually tells you what you might be eligible for in rebates
27:42so let's say you want to go ahead with it yeah it'll connect you to local installers and if you need
27:47finance combank has a range of financing options off the back of it so combank will actually finance
27:52your solar system if you need to absolutely i love these upgrades we will offer finance on and if you
27:58are a combank home loan customer yes it is an incredibly competitive rate so why isn't everyone
28:04in australia doing this well we're hoping with tools like this that take the hassle out of it more people
28:08do now i wouldn't recommend anything without testing it myself so this is the spot which is why i'm putting
28:19in the mother of all solar farms on my farm what we're going to be doing is a ground mount system it's
28:26going to sit on a frame take up roughly 70 square meters we're going to be facing about this way
28:31here towards that tree right there basically is your perfect north we have three separate arrays
28:39each 10 kilowatt and that'll total our 30 kilowatt system so this is the sun path moving relative to
28:47the array wow we're gonna have 30 kilowatt of solar panels that'll supply the home and supply the big
28:52battery bank that we've got being installed 96 kilowatt well that's about three times the size of an
28:58average home solar panel system and six times the amount of battery storage i hope i'm not getting
29:05too carried away here so you'll be running completely off the grid no bill no reliance on the electricity
29:10retailers and in fact because you'd pair up with amber electric as your retailer yes trade wholesale prices
29:17yes you'll be in credit year-round by a significant amount so i'll have a holiday fund as well you'll
29:22have a holiday fund that's incredible man exactly
29:32well now that our da's been approved it's time to take a few more things up to the farm
29:37hey kids are we going to pack some toys for the farm
29:40well today is move day and i feel like i'm getting deja vu all over again okay that's one down
29:51makes the grace truck is here
29:57yes this is it we're going to the farm
30:03all of this insulation yep um that's going to go to the farm
30:08we've got our hybrid vehicles the first removal company in australia to have fully electric trucks
30:13so we're pretty proud of that for longer distance removals grace also offers a train
30:18service which is exactly what we're using 90 of the items we're sending in to stay
30:23to through the rail network so it's actually less carbon intensive to send it by train
30:28about 40 less carbon emissions by doing it through the rail network wow
30:32beds obviously got to go kids toys yeah the crew will pull this apart when we deliver we put it
30:39all back together for you and put it in place as well so you don't have to worry about that that's
30:43dreamy this was yes i don't uh envy the person putting this back together it's not my forte
30:48no that's why we hire grace that's why we get grace exactly so good
31:01coming up
31:03problem solved mick gets the final piece of the puzzle in the race to lock up very exciting
31:09and we put my windows to the ultimate test
31:27in canberra at the quichini's new pre-cast concrete house it's a big day just gotta look for oh
31:33bloody hell only just learning to walk and build a mix pump because the final piece of the puzzle
31:43he's been waiting for is due to arrive put the windows in today and finally get a lock-up payment
31:48which is good so becomes cash flow positive today so very excited about that now when it comes to lock
31:55up mick made some big promises you're not telling any jokes no we're gonna lock the fall betty up for
32:00sean and sarah and the kids in 10 days due to factors out of mix control it's ended up taking
32:0617 days to get to lock up but somehow mick still managed to keep the build on schedule overall
32:14time frame we're not bad we're still pretty much on track we're just not at lock up but we're past
32:21lock up in other places oh interim like all the internal frames have gone up
32:26to keep the build on track mick needs to get the windows installed today that's a big day today
32:41the other issue too is the insulation's been booked in today because chip rock is
32:45on monday so you know we're going to be climbing over each other which isn't ideal either so it's
32:52going to be a very bit of people management today fortunately as a former rodeo clown
32:59makes an old hand at negotiating tricky situations
33:07uh not sure what the problem is out something about a big door's got to go outside but the
33:12scaffold's there so we'll go down and check it out i think yes 100 let's do it
33:18problem solved
33:26all happening
33:33these are thermal broken windows double glazed so really good between the precast of being spot
33:40on to the millimeter there's no gap there which is unreal you know that's what we're after
33:44another couple of hours we should have them all in and uh sean and sarah will have a locked up home
33:52it's very exciting hello sarah how are you good how are you good how are you very exciting day
34:01now when it comes to energy efficient design these windows are simply the best in class
34:07we all know about double glazing but now there's thermally broken windows it's new technology that makes
34:13windows even more energy efficient so what firmly broken does is actually stops that heat transfer
34:19or cold transfer and then keeps your house inside perfect you've got the best glass and the best
34:25aluminium products you can on the market um for this kind of climate and this builds with the windows in
34:30the quichini's house is at locker and all that's needed now is the final stamp of approval do you like
34:38the windows do you want to put your hand print on them yeah feel the windows that's it rub rub it
34:45on come on that's it good girl oh look at that eh all your handprints good girl i love you
34:53good job very happy yeah thank you they're so good
35:00dal windows in partnership with ventus are doing some incredible things remember grandma's old house
35:09with the classic 1950s louvers well they've come a long way dal and ventus have reinvented the louver
35:17which means they've developed one of australia's first twin blade louvers that not only increases your
35:24home's energy efficiency but also its acoustic performance and i'm lucky enough to be using them
35:31in my design but first they have to be put to the test this is a world first i don't think we've ever
35:38had a double glazed louver in the history of australian building have we not a dual blade louver no
35:44definitely not so the difference being a dual blade versus a double glaze the aesthetics and the clear
35:48view you're going to get through it instead of a prison bar look are you really going to blow this
35:52window up we're going to blow it up we're going to turn it up to three four hundred kilometers an
35:56hour it's going to explode with positive pressure which is pushing on the window wow so we want
36:00cyclone conditions we want heavy rains we want rain coming in sideways to see if it'll get through
36:06the louvers we want heat we want cold we want everything right smoke the whole lot the objective
36:11of this test is to push the windows literally to their breaking point beyond what they'd ever
36:17experience in real life are you ready matt i'm ready let's go okay all right let's crank this
36:23baby up go to two go to three keep going where are we going now keep in mind these louvers have never
36:30been tested to these sorts of wings we got to push up to 450 k's can hear it screaming i can see it flex it
36:39keep going ash how many kilometers 500 kilometers matt and i moved back to a safer area to observe the
36:48ultimate destruction test in the end we reached 700 kilometers per hour before they reached breaking
36:55point it's going to go it will go this time oh my god
37:02mate what just happened then 10 000 old pascals it's the highest ash has ever had his rig go to so
37:11that's the first product to get that high in it so that you're pushing close to 700 kilometers an hour
37:17plus uh and you saw the result the highest wind level ever recorded on the planet is 484 kilometers per
37:24hour and that was inside a tornado so it's safe to say these louvers are almost indestructible
37:33that was proper that was uh well done i told you to hang around and watch it yeah mate that's an
37:38extraordinary piece of technology coming up the razi cast building experiment that could change
37:45everything can you deliver cost effectively and can you do it at scale and finally helen and michael's
37:51new homes come home so exciting
38:03now if we're really going to solve the building crisis then we need volume home builders to get
38:08on board builders like domain homes who build 500 homes a year so a few weeks ago i invited a team
38:15from domain to see mixed resi cast concrete system in action in the hope that they would take a risk
38:23and give it a go very impressive very impressive today has proven that it's got some potential
38:28so yeah we're gonna have a go okay we can get excited
38:37domain are trialing the resi cast building method at rouse hill in sydney's western suburbs matt
38:42campbell is the ceo of campbell property group who own domain and clarendon homes he's also the man
38:50who's putting his money where his mouth is here you are breaking ground yeah on your very first resi
38:55cast site at the moment it would appear that the resi cast solution is a little bit more expensive
39:02than traditional bricks and mortar right but time is money yes so time is money for both us and our
39:08customers so i suspect that there's time savings in there yes that we'll we'll find out along the way
39:15that'll give you the advantage it'll give us that yeah it'll mitigate those costs yeah the real test
39:20for these modern methods of construction is can you deliver cost effectively and can you do it at scale
39:26let's hope for the future of aussie housing domain homes trial of mixed resi cast system is a success
39:36in canberra mick from resi cast has built sarah and sean quichini's home
39:41in record time it's now time for them to join the solar and battery party okay mate hey how are you
39:47make how are you good what do you got here well i have rc solar panels they are so if you look very
39:53closely you cannot see any soldering between one cell and another oh yeah so that's a very unique
39:59technology that rsc developed and that reduces the risk of micro cracks which could potentially impact
40:05the performance of the panel all right you want to chuck them up yes let's do it
40:12sean and sarah have designed their future house so that all the solar and power generated up top
40:18is sent to their battery system
40:23so this is a 40 kilowatt stack so it comprises of five eight kilowatt modules so you get a inverter on top
40:29it also comes with a full backup system we've got the gateway over there so in the case of a blackout
40:35this house will be powered up in less than a millisecond the thing we love about it is how
40:39flexible it is it doesn't take up much space we can retrofit it to any system in the market
40:43or it's perfect for new installations it's just a fantastic product and to manage the household
40:49energy generation and use they're also setting up a smart amber system to manage their power if you're
40:57doing the automation with amber your bill is actually going to go below zero and we reckon you're
41:02going to be around about two and a half thousand dollars a year in credit nice we can we can just
41:08retire and let the let the electricity pay the bills it makes me really happy to see this system go up
41:15because not only are we going to be able to be off grid anytime we need to be but we're also producing
41:21more than we need and we can sell that back to the grid and actually make a bit of money off our own
41:27home just through passive income so passive house design passive income it's a win-win
41:39after 10 weeks of construction being built at the high-tech factory the fox's two modular homes are
41:45complete let me run through with our final checks yep all good time to prepare the finished houses
41:53for transportation and delivery any sudden movement could spell disaster not even the ground in the
42:01tiles can move it's not done systematically if it's not done carefully there's a good chance of it rocking
42:06dropping damaging the unit or even coming all the way to the ground
42:11this is a two-module house so whilst this is ready for lifting the other house is being ready
42:21again same process put on the wheels and then the forklift will bring it out and then the next truck
42:26will come and you know start lifting
42:31each module weighs eight to nine tons and is over three meters wide
42:36and 10 meters long it's also up to four meters in height we don't cut corners everything is done very
42:47very precisely we do a house a week so it's it's a pretty it's an exciting it's a really an exciting job
42:56that we have here
42:56loaded with their precious cargo the trucks head off at night by escort
43:08as they begin the slow and steady journey towards their final destination up the hill to the blue
43:14mountains of new south wales
43:19coming up i check on my little patch of dirt mate who designed this thing um some galoot
43:24but the reality is there's a long way to go
43:36in the blue mountains of new south wales it's a momentous occasion for michael and helen fox
43:44so exciting
43:44their two brand new modular homes are about to be delivered
43:57after winding their way through the mountains overnight the trucks carefully squeeze their way
44:03through the last hundred meters check your clearance
44:06to be delivered to the fox's property
44:10to be delivered to the south wales it's pretty amazing isn't it yeah yeah this is helen's house
44:25the first one going on the back of the block
44:29a bit scary when you hoist it up you only just miss misses that pole over there and
44:34too stressful for me tell you what when you look at those chains that are you know coming down from
44:41the hook to the spreader thing there yeah just visualize them snapping
44:50but i suppose they've done it before it must be all right
44:53the modular home snapped together like enormous lego bricks
45:10and all of a sudden helen has a house next it's time for michael's modular house to be craned in
45:19it's good isn't it very nice
45:23it's good
45:30helen michael this is a very small oh no token of appreciation thank you so much that's all right
45:39thank you oh you're lovely thank you so much thank you michael the largest investment that somebody
45:45would make is on a house buying a block of land and in a building or getting a house yes i do it
45:51every day and you will see the clients overwhelmed that's the pleasure that we as a company derive
45:58okay helping clients to sort of make it faster and deliver it and you know put it together and get
46:04them into their domain as quick as possible fantastic yeah beautiful beautiful yeah look at that and you're
46:15looking onto the trees hello trees oh now they're in place the houses look amazing they're offset just at
46:22the right angle you know we've got privacy between us they just look amazing they just look fantastic on
46:30the block and i can just see caitlin being relaxed and not walking around boxes and you know her bedroom
46:36being set up the way she knows it to look like and finally making a life for ourselves and making it like a home
46:42in canberra mick's doing his best to help the quichinis get into their house as soon as possible
46:54what a great use of recycled concrete ah beautiful
47:01including by lending a hand to the air conditioning installers
47:04oh it's not even heavy it's pretty lightweight nice and sleek i call it sleek my dear air
47:15conditioners are well known for being good value energy efficient and easy to install i always want
47:21to give it a clean at the end make sure it looks brand new
47:23all right i think we're done looking good now i've been away from the farm for just over a week
47:37and i'm super excited to see the progress on site of our new home whoa are you sure it's big enough uh
47:46wow you guys have been busy well done mate nice to see you well done this looks enormous guys it's
47:55amazing right you can really see it now this is kind of breakfast bar kitchen laundry over there
48:03lounge room over there look at the sunken lounge room in there mate i love it how many square meters
48:10we're talking the first pour 640 square right but that's not all interior right no two-thirds of
48:18that is interior a third is outside that's right you've got your uh little meditation area there the
48:23outside area yeah and the barbecue area yeah mate it's feeling really elevated isn't it and and the pool
48:29finishes out beyond that yellow post really yeah mate who designed this thing um some galoot
48:37but listen we've we've broken the back of this yeah absolutely like this is this is a good start
48:49yes it's a good start but the truth is i'm miles behind the other families and i may not even get
48:54the house finished on time mick and the cochinis are already at lockup and have started installing
49:01appliances rex has delivered and installed the fox's two modular homes and they're actually about
49:08to move in so when i put this project up against the other two
49:15i'm nowhere in three weeks i'll have the federal housing minister looking at my house and it better
49:23not be a patch of dirt next week on future house it's all hands on deck as i attempt the impossible
49:31you guys are amazing we reveal the finished three houses and we take the teams to parliament house
49:41for the ultimate pitch would you come out and help us judge these homes what a request
49:46absolutely jamie which house will they vote for as the very best future house
