DIVER CAPTURES RARE UNDERWATER FOOD CHAIN DRAMA IN MALDIVES
WITH VID
By Mike Jones
Watch as a dive instructor witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime underwater encounter while guiding a group in the Maldives, a split-second chain of predation involving two moray eels, a grouper, and a grey reef shark.
The video, filmed by 44-year-old Cruise Director and Diving Instructor Katrin Schweigler from Germany, was captured at the dive site Kuda Rah Thila in the South Ari Atoll, Maldives.
Katrin initially began filming after spotting a giant black moray eel moving inside a hole, assuming it was hunting a small fish.
As the eel emerged, Katrin realized a fimbriated moray was wrapped tightly around the giant moray’s head, clearly attempting to choke it.
Within seconds, a grouper appeared, attempting to steal the prey, before a grey reef shark suddenly entered the frame and claimed it entirely.
The entire sequence happened so fast that Katrin said she barely had time to react, instinctively continuing to film as the scene unfolded with overwhelming speed and force.
After the shark disappeared, Katrin and her dive group screamed underwater in disbelief, later realizing they had just witnessed something extraordinarily rare.
With more than 4,000 dives logged, Katrin shared that she had never experienced anything remotely similar.
