14 December - National weather forecast presented by Jonathan Vautrey.
Transcript
00:00Hello there.
00:01Good afternoon.
00:02We are continuing to see quite an unsettled weekend of weather for some regions of the
00:07UK.
00:08Currently, there's this conveyor of cloud drifting in all the way from parts of the Atlantic.
00:12It's a very slow-moving feature, so it's providing the same parts of northern and western UK with
00:18these repeated pulses of very heavy rainfall.
00:21In the last 24 hours, we've already seen a month's worth of rain fall across parts of
00:25Cumbria, and with these heavy pulses of rain still continuing, there is an amber weather
00:30warning in force here throughout the rest of the day and into Monday.
00:33By the end of the event, we could see over 200 millimetres of rain falling, and that is
00:38certainly going to continue to provide flooding and disruption.
00:41There are other yellow rain warnings in force this afternoon for western Scotland, Northern
00:45Ireland and other regions of north-western England.
00:48Whilst it's not a persistent band of rain, just the continued nature of these pulses
00:52and outbreaks of heavy rain will really provide that flooding in places.
00:57It's accompanied by some quite strong winds as well, gales around coasts and our hills,
01:02and particularly for parts of the A55 for northern Wales, but also the A1 around East Lothian
01:07as well.
01:08We could see some quite strong crosswinds developing here at times, so do take care when you're
01:12travelling here.
01:13Generally, the south-east managing to stay drier this afternoon.
01:17A few bright spells are possible, but generally it is cloudier compared to Saturday.
01:21It's quite breezy as well, but those winds are coming in from a southerly direction,
01:25and so that's filtering in mild air, and many of us will see double-digit figure temperatures.
01:31As we head into this evening and overnight, the rain will slowly push its way south-eastwards,
01:36again those heavy pulses still possible, eventually spreading more towards other areas of northern
01:40England, south-western England, and also a lot of Wales as well.
01:45Again the south-east managing to stay mostly dry throughout tonight, but relatively cloudy
01:49still and quite mild underneath all that clouds, with temperatures ranging between 9 and 11
01:54degrees Celsius.
01:55Once the rain clears through though for Scotland and Northern Ireland, and skies begin to clear
01:59up a little bit more, temperatures will drop down here towards the back end of the night,
02:03and so rural spots may be into low single figures towards dawn on Monday morning.
02:10So when you're stepping out first thing then, do be aware that rain is going to be in play
02:13across northern England, south-western England, and also into the lot of Wales as well.
02:20As a result, we have another amber warning coming into force on Monday for southern areas
02:25of Wales, where again we could see a lot of rainfall, potentially 100 millimetres of rain
02:30developing here. Particularly since the ground is so saturated at the moment here, due to recent
02:35storm events and other flooding at times, this extra rainfall is going to result in a lot of
02:41disruption once again. So do take care when you're travelling here. There are other yellow
02:46rain warnings coming into force later this evening and into tomorrow for the north-western Wales and
02:52parts of south-western England as well, and eventually into Monday another rain warning for
02:55north-eastern England as well. Either side of that rain band, whilst it will be drier, it's a bit of a
03:01slip-blit picture. Again, it will be quite cloudy across the south-east. Again, relatively mild and
03:07breezy here, but a decent amount of sunshine developing for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. A few
03:12showers to watch in the far north-west. Temperatures here, though, dropping back down towards
03:17generally around average for the time of year, seven to eight degrees Celsius.
03:21Our rain band's continuing to progress its way very slowly south-eastwards. It's so slow moving because
03:28it's what we call a waving frontal system, where it's sort of shifting between a warm front and a
03:33cold front, and so it's not quite able to progress in a very distinct pattern. But there are signs that
03:39by Tuesday it will eventually move its way towards more south-eastern areas of the UK, and this ridge of
03:45high pressure will help settle things down again for many other regions, away from a few showers that will
03:50drift in in that occluded front across Northern Scotland. However, there is further wet and windy
03:55weather quite likely as we head towards the second half of next week, so do stay in tune to the forecast,
04:01and we'll keep you up to date with that. Otherwise, enjoy the rest of your day. Bye-bye.
