Community rallies to finish harvest of firefighter killed in line of duty

A community in the southeast of the state has made a heartwarming gesture to the family of a farmer killed while fighting a bushfire. A volunteer workforce has rallied to finish the harvest at the farm he owned.

In mourning, a community unites.

59-year-old Mark Mutie died last week battling a bushfire in farmland on WA's south coast.

Within days of his death, dozens of volunteers converged on the family farm at West River to help finish the last harvest.

Dad was a huge people person. He had connections everywhere.

Everyone in the whole community has really reached out to help support in their little ways.

It's blown me away.

The volunteers arrived with machinery, food and labour to lend a hand,

working together to complete the 6,000 hectare harvest within days.

It's so cool that so many people were reaching out to help because of the networks that Dad had.

It's been a logistical challenge with many of the volunteers working together for the first time.

It's happening and it's not the most efficient show you'll ever see,

but everyone's doing it with a smile on the face when they can and getting through the emotion when they can't.

With many farmers yet to finish harvesting their own crops,

the Mutie families say they've been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community.

I'll never be able to thank everyone for what the support is.

And at the end of the day, it's cool for me to sit back and just watch it all happen,
