00:00So we're actually on the set of Schooled right now.
00:03Yeah, welcome to Schooled. Stage 28 on the Sony lot, working set.
00:06Thank you so much for having Hollywood Life here today.
00:08Of course, thanks for coming.
00:10Tell me about this series and how exciting it is for you to be a Goldbergs spinoff star yourself now.
00:15It's been so fun. I mean, you know, I've been obviously working as Lainey for the past six years on the Goldbergs
00:21and now being able to kind of transition her into the 90s as a teacher at William Penn is crazy.
00:27It kind of centers around me as well as Mellor and Glascott and this new character, Chuck Brown.
00:32And we're kind of the hub of the show and centers around teachers and kind of honoring them,
00:37but also having fun with kind of going back to our old high school.
00:40And I'm loving doing this. I love this character. I love these writers.
00:44And I really feel at home here to be able to do, you know, work on a new show
00:48and have the comfortability of continuing a character you've already been working on is kind of a perfect world.
00:53And you're a 90s kid yourself, so you think of the 90s, you think of Britney, you think of NSYNC, Backstreet Boys.
00:58Are we going to see any of that here? And who would you love to get guest star?
01:01Because that's what the Goldbergs are really known for, too.
01:03Totally. I mean, I was a huge Britney Spears NSYNC fan.
01:07Obviously, that was like late 90s, early 2000s.
01:10But also Romy and Michelle, Clueless.
01:13We actually do an Ode to She's All That, one of our episodes.
01:15I mean, there's so much we throw back to.
01:17I would love to get, you know, like a Lisa Kudrow or an Alicia Silverstone on the show
01:22or even like a guest director like Amy Heckerling, who did Clueless.
01:26It would just be really cool to kind of get someone from the 90s world.
01:29But we're lucky enough to have like Leah Thompson and Jay Chandrasekhar
01:33and people who have done, you know, nostalgic films that the fans,
01:37if they're looking close enough, will go, oh, wow, this was directed by Leah.
01:40You know, it's kind of neat. But fun guests are coming.
01:42We're starting to really develop the show first as the hub of the cast.
01:46And then from there, we'll expand to fun 90s guests.
01:49And who else from the Goldbergs are we going to see familiar face-wise?
01:53You're going to see Principal Ball, who comes back as our kind of school custodian.
02:00You're going to see Sean Marquette.
02:03Johnny Atkins.
02:04You're going to see Erica actually comes back and makes an appearance in Lainey's life.
02:09We're going to see Anna Gosteyer, who plays Miss Cinnamon.
02:14It's a lot of really good characters that actually are going to weave between both shows.
02:18And I'm even doing both shows right now.
02:20So it's really cool.
02:21You actually constantly on this lot, it's like Goldbergs and Skooled taking over.
02:25So I'll literally like be at the coffee shop, like, you know, a row of stages over.
02:28And it's like, oh, hey, are you working on Goldbergs today or Skooled?
02:31We're like taking over.
02:32It's nuts.
02:34And what about Wendy?
02:35Will we see her here as well?
02:36You will see Wendy.
02:37I can't believe I missed that.
02:38Am I allowed to even say that?
02:39Well, we just did.
02:40Beverly Goldberg will make an appearance, and she actually is the one that gets me this job.
02:44So I owe everything to Beverly.
02:46And she's actually probably my favorite cameo.
02:49How hard is it to go from 80s to 90s?
02:51Is it harder than people would think?
02:53No, I don't.
02:54I mean, the cool thing is it's a smooth transition.
02:56We have the same department heads on both shows.
02:58So my costume is the same.
03:00I'm super used to her.
03:01Hair and makeup kills it.
03:03I mean, 80s and 90s is obviously a very different world.
03:06As an actor, I don't worry about the era.
03:08I just more focus on who is Lainey at this point in her life.
03:12And that's what gets a little confusing, crossing hairs between the two shows, is who Lainey
03:16was as a kid, out of college, and who she is now as an adult, more of an adult, now that
03:23she has kind of failed in music and come back to her past as a teacher.
03:27So that's more what I focus on than like 80s versus 90s.
03:30And will we be seeing some musical performances from you at all?
03:33Yes.
03:34Mainly my students, but you will see a performance actually from Erica and Lainey.
03:38What about your sister?
03:39How's she doing?
03:41My sister's great.
03:42I don't have a sister in the show, from what I'm aware of, but I've talked to Adam Goldberg
03:46about bringing Allie in.
03:48She's on iZombie, so she's busy working on her own thing.
03:50But when she's done, I kind of want to bring her in as like a bad cousin or something.
03:54I love that.
03:55Something.
03:55I don't know.
03:56Well, I know you have to get back to filming, so thank you so much for taking the time to talk to you.
03:59Thanks for coming.
04:00I appreciate it.
04:01Hey, what's up?
04:02AJ Meshaka here.
04:02Thank you for following Hollywood Life.
