00:00The share of people in the EU who are unable to keep their homes warm has increased since Russia's invasion full-blown of Ukraine sparked an energy crisis.
00:10According to Eurostat, more than 41 million people are unable to afford to keep their properties adequately warm, amounting to 9.2% of the population.
00:20In the EU, the share of people unable to heat their home ranges from 19% in Bulgaria and Greece to 2.7% in Finland.
00:28Fueled poverty is mainly driven by three underlying root causes, a high proportion of household expenditures spent on energy, low income and the low energy performance of buildings.
00:39The share of people who are unable to heat their homes has been gradually declining since 2011 and it reached its lowest level in 2019 and 2021 before rising again.
00:51Last year saw another decline.
00:52According to the Commission, this positive trend is the result of a reduction in gas and electricity retail prices and the implementation of energy efficiency measures.
