00:00Amid shifts in energy supply, which EU countries consume and produce the most gas?
00:08In 2025, inland demand in the EU for natural gas increased by 2.5% compared with 2024,
00:16according to the latest Eurostat figures.
00:19The largest increases in consumption were recorded in Croatia, Portugal and Slovenia.
00:24In contrast, the largest drops were seen in Finland, Sweden and Estonia.
00:29Romania, the EU's largest natural gas producer, recorded a 0.8% decrease in production.
00:36Yet this figure might change with the new gas pipeline in the Romanian Black Sea
00:41due to make its first gas delivery in 2027.
00:44It was followed by the Netherlands, which registered a drop of 3.5%
00:49and Germany with a decrease of 2.3%.
00:52However, the EU is highly dependent on gas imports with 89% of its supply in 2025,
00:58coming from outside the bloc.
01:01The EU imports pipeline gas primarily from Norway, Algeria, Russia, the UK, Azerbaijan and Libya,
01:08accounting for 59% of total gas imports.
01:12By the end of 2027, all Russian gas imports will be prohibited in a bid to end the bloc's
01:18decades-long dependency on Russian energy following the war in Ukraine.
01:23Given their landlocked position, Hungary and Slovakia were granted temporary exceptions to the ban.
