Members of the European Parliament clashed during a heated debate over proposals to ban Russian energy imports, with critics condemning the move as a “triumph of hypocrisy” carried out at the expense of EU citizens.

Several lawmakers argued that replacing cheaper Russian gas with increased dependence on liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States would drive up energy costs and deepen Europe’s reliance on external suppliers. They described the strategy as economically damaging and politically contradictory, warning that ordinary consumers and industries would bear the burden.

Supporters of the proposed ban defended the policy as a necessary step to reduce Moscow’s revenues and strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy following Russia’s war in Ukraine. However, opponents countered that the shift risks undermining competitiveness while offering limited energy security benefits.

00:00Colleagues, we must speak honestly.
00:04Russia has never been a reliable partner.
00:08It manipulated gas flows to weaken governments and destabilize markets most dramatically before invading Ukraine.
00:17Energy and aggression in this case are intertwined.
00:22No one should claim business is business when energy is used as a weapon.
00:27The good news is, Europe has alternative.
00:31The EU is taking China's steps towards a new era free of Russian gas and oil.
00:36Never again dependency on Russia on fossil fuels.
00:40And Russia can never again use fossil fuels exports as a weapon against Europe.
00:45The part to this day has been long and it has been difficult, but we have to remember it's a historic outcome that we are here.
00:51So, this house makes many important decisions.
00:57But I still do think it's rare that you make one where we know for a fact that it'll be noticed in Moscow, it'll be noticed in Washington, it'll be noticed all over the world.
01:14Probably with smiles in most places, definitely not with smiles in Moscow.
01:21This is important.
01:23It's taking away real money from the war chest of Putin.
01:29This is important because we're showing that when we stand together in Europe, when we cannot be divided, we cannot be blackmailed.
01:44You cannot weaponize energy against us, or rather you can, but we will have an answer.
01:54So, the decision that we've made now to ban the import of Russian gas is a historic one.
02:03And I think probably what makes me most proud is the fact that this is not something that we do temporarily.
02:17We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past.
02:21Later, in the start of next year, the Commission will also put forward a proposal to end the last imports of oil.
02:38This is also important, and later again, we will also put forward a proposal to end nuclear fuel.
02:47Although, looking at the economic side, obviously, this decision today is so much more important.
02:52Still, we need to be completely rid of Russian energy in Europe.
02:58Today, by our vote, we affirm that no longer that.
03:03No longer we will depend on the Russian gas.
03:06No longer we will be financed by Putin's wars.
03:10But don't be naïf.
03:12The buying of American gas are American American buying a new risk.
03:16That's why our choice, the only choice, is the choice of the European sovereignty.
03:22We call the States to continue their investments in the energy energy and renewable energy,
03:28and finally to initiate a true political policy of energy sovereignty.
03:32Because, be clear, the energy sovereignty is not an option.
03:36It is the foundation of our freedom.
03:39With the release of the Russian gas, the European Union gives the image of its inveiglement.
03:45We completely脱 of the legal framework and legal sanctions against a third country,
03:50because a sanction is a political tool.
03:51It is always gradual, conditional and reversible.
03:54Or, what prevails this rule is devastating, because, in verrouillant juridically its decisions without any clause of revision,
04:03Europe has禁止 all adaptation, even if the geopolitical situation is evolving,
04:08and especially if a peace agreement is concluded with Russia.
04:11This historical history is dramatic.
04:14In fact, we have never broken our energy links with the Grand Est, even at the most difficult time of history.
04:20In fact, these links constitute a strategic levier for peace and for Europe.
04:25In fact, with the gel for a long duration of the Russian assets in the European Union,
04:32Bruxelles is responsible for the same hatred for history and stability of our continent.
04:38In the two cases, this rupture is imposed in contouring the classical schéma classic of sanctions
04:43and the spirit and the letter of the treaty,
04:47in the means of a legal legal basis, without unanimity,
04:52and at the price of legal risks major for the États and the businesses.
04:56In fact, Europe remplace a gas-bomb marché by an independent of the U.N.L. American,
05:01signalling the sacrifice of our industrial competitiveness,
05:04tout en renouncing definitively to the future of the diplomat.
05:08The signature of a peace agreement approche.
05:10These irreversible decisions will plonger Europe in a terrible impasse stratégique.
05:15You only have the right state at the mouth,
05:17but in reality, what you do is a legal legal cost
05:20for the people and the nations in contouring the treaties.
05:24We will not become free in Europe by simply replacing Russian gas imports
05:29by another dependency on, for example, imports from the U.S.
05:34Only massive investments into renewable energy and energy efficiency will make that happen.
05:41More wind, more sun, more peace, more freedom and more European sovereignty.
05:48That's what we need and that's what we should work for.
06:45Stiamo pianificando consapevolmente l'inflazione energetica.
07:47dyskusji politycznej i przeważa szalę zdrowego rozsądku i bezpieczeństwa
08:13Również dotyczy to ropy.
08:16I pamiętajmy, kiedyś podjętą decyzję o budowie Nord Stream 2.
08:21Dzisiaj mówimy, że to był historyczny błąd.
08:24I z tego też trzeba wyciągnąć wnioski.
08:26Dziękuję bardzo.
08:55és a benzinára is kilőne.
08:56A közben Brysselben solidaritáció popolnak,
09:00ijel išnappal.
09:02Máme rôzne závislosti, rôzne krajiny.
09:04A chápem, hogy niektoré krajiny to podporujú,
09:06pretože budú dostávať tranzitné poplatky od nás,
09:08ostatných, oveľa vyššom meradle pre svoj štátny rozpočet.
09:10Ale proste je to zlé a hlúpe.
09:12A jednoducho takýmto spôsobom
09:13nepomôžeme ani konkurenceschopnosti Európskej únie,
09:16ani našim vlastným firmám,
09:17pretože tie potrebujú lacnejší, lepší plin,
09:19ktorý prichádza práve z Ruska v tomto prípade.
09:22Takže neostrihávajme sa,
09:23nestrialáme sa do ďalšej nohy
09:25a nerobme hlúpe rozhodnutia,
09:27ktoré aj tak budeme musieť,
09:28ako v prípade speľovací motorov,
09:29znova opravovať do piatich rokov.
09:31Vám toto slúbujem, že toto sa stane.
