When a beloved pediatric dentist is shot dead in a parking garage, what appears to be a random homicide turns into an international manhunt when detectives uncover a sinister stalking plan executed by a hired hitman.
Transcript
00:00Someone just got shot in the parking lot of the Gables Park 17 in the P1.
00:19All I heard was screaming and then a loud pop and then I saw her laying on the floor
00:23and it was like red blood coming out of her neck and her bones on the floor.
00:27Okay, where's the lady that was shot?
00:29She's in the garage where you have to like have a garage opener to open the door.
00:33Can you still see her or no?
00:35No, it's a deal.
00:37Is anyone with a female that was injured?
00:40No, no.
00:42I don't know what happened.
00:51Get the tape out of the trunk.
00:52Do they got cameras that come in and out of this place?
01:00Yeah, they're checking on it right now.
01:01Okay.
01:02I got a hold of the homicide detector.
01:04He's waiting on the official call.
01:06He was on our dead body.
01:07He knows about it.
01:08Okay.
01:08I need you and your partner, if you will, for me to run up here.
01:17And we want to cover that side to see people from flowing through.
01:19Okay, just back over here.
01:20Yeah, do you want me to take her or do you need to take her?
01:23Let me go.
01:24I've got this thing filming, so let me go film the scene real quick.
01:27I received a phone call that there was a female that had been shot and killed in a parking
01:31garage in the part of Dallas called Uptown.
01:33It's a very affluent area.
01:35During my tenure in homicide, this is the only case that I've ever had in Uptown.
01:39She was found with the door to her vehicle was open, and it was pretty clear she'd been
02:02shot in the head.
02:03Next to her body was her cell phone and also a magazine from a handgun.
02:15The magazine laying next to the body is not something that we typically see, and so I
02:19believe that there was either a struggle or there was something that caused the shooter
02:24to leave a little faster than what he wanted to leave, which caused him to drop the magazine.
02:28The first thing that stood out to me was that there was no purse inside the vehicle.
02:36At the outset of looking into it, it did appear to be a robbery, but again, that was what made
02:43it so unusual because those types of things just have not taken place in that part of town.
02:49We ran the victim's license plate, and the vehicle came back registered to Kendra Hatcher,
02:54a pediatric dentist in the Dallas area.
02:56There was one camera that captured all the cars as they came into the parking garage and
03:13as they left.
03:16Reviewing the footage, I saw the victim pull into the parking garage.
03:19I don't think her car had even made it into the parking space yet before I see a dark figure
03:28walking over to her vehicle immediately.
03:30Like, it was dead on that that was exactly what he was looking for.
03:34There was a short time frame between when the victim parked her car until the time that she
03:46was murdered.
03:48So I knew that she was an intended target of the shooting.
03:53Examining the suspect vehicle was an older model Jeep.
03:56There was paint flaking off of it, and it's not the typical car that you see in uptown.
04:01We weren't able to see a license plate, but we took a still photo, kind of examined it,
04:07zoomed in, and we were able to determine that it was a female driver and she had brown hair.
04:11And I knew that the shooter got out of the passenger side of the vehicle, so there was
04:16at least two people in the vehicle.
04:17We knew we needed to find the owner of that Jeep, and we felt that the public could help
04:23us with that.
04:24So we pushed out a still photo on the evening news.
04:27Someone recognizes this Jeep.
04:29We wanted to give them the opportunity to give us a call.
04:32We're in a race against time, so I wanted to track down any evidence possible that we
04:37could use to put this murder together and figure out what the murder was about.
04:41I got a message from one of Kendra's friends.
04:48All of a sudden, in one telephone call, boom, your world's upside down.
04:55Yep.
04:55I would describe Kendra as ambitious.
05:03Anything that she was passionate about, she did at 100%.
05:07She went to dental school, but she always had that passion for Spanish, too.
05:11For the church, she would volunteer her dentistry time for all the kids down in Ecuador.
05:17After everything went down, I was very confused, because Kendra was loved by everybody.
05:26Nobody wanted to hurt her.
05:29So it was just very odd.
05:38The staff at the apartment complex notified me that Kendra Hatcher, she'd been living at
05:44that apartment building for several months.
05:46She never had any issues at the building, and she pretty much lived a very quiet life
05:52up until this incident.
05:54We learned Kendra had a significant other, so I made my way inside the apartment complex
05:59office, and I spoke with an individual named Ricardo Paniagua.
06:03We found out Dr. Paniagua and Kendra had been dating and pretty much were head over heels
06:08for each other.
06:09They were making plans to get married and eventually moved to San Francisco.
06:13He had no answers as to why someone would want to do this to Kendra.
06:17I couldn't see that there was anything that he was trying to mislead me on.
06:22He was just more distraught, trying to wrap his brain around the fact that the person he
06:26cared about was now dead.
06:27So at that point, what I focused on was just trying to figure out who it was that could
06:33have wanted the victim dead.
06:34Dallas Police Department posted the vehicle over the local news stations, and the actual
06:46owner of the vehicle contacted the police.
06:48I received a phone call from Jose Ortiz.
06:52He believed that that was his Jeep on the news.
06:56Jose, he's a mechanic, and that's what he does by trade.
06:59He said on September 2nd, the day of the murder, his childhood friend, Brenda Delgado, and one
07:05of her friends named Crystal came to his shop and needed a replacement vehicle while he did
07:10some work for them on Brenda's car.
07:12So he loaned his Jeep out to Brenda.
07:16Jose provided a cell phone number for Brenda, and I was able to call her on the spot and
07:20made arrangements with some of my co-workers to pick her up and bring her to the station.
07:29There wasn't anything really remarkable about her background.
07:32She went to high school here.
07:34She enrolled in dental hygienist school.
07:37She had never been arrested before, but as I was doing sort of background work, trying
07:41to pre-game my conversation, Ricardo Paniagua, Kendra's boyfriend, he caught me in a panic.
07:48He said that he saw the still photo on the news, and the female driving the vehicle had
07:54a strong resemblance to his ex-girlfriend, Brenda Delgado.
07:59What he told me was that he was in a long, drawn-out relationship with Brenda.
08:04They broke it off and several times rekindled the relationship, and things just kind of fizzled
08:09out.
08:09He told us he just considered her a friend.
08:12In fact, the day and night that this happened, one of the first people he called to describe
08:19this horrific event, or what happened, was Brenda Delgado.
08:23And obviously, her name came up twice at this point.
08:26So talking to Brenda was the most important thing in the case.
08:29Well, I'm working, of course, I'm working a murder investigation.
08:54Your name came up in the investigation, so I wanted to sit down and talk with you to kind
08:59of figure out what's going on and get your version of the events.
09:03I decided to be very direct and upfront with Brenda because I wanted her to know that the situation was serious, and I need to get straight to the facts on this case.
09:18Kendra Hatcher was killed on Wednesday, September 2nd.
09:24She was dating, I think, a guy that you used to date.
09:27The way that your name came up in the investigation was linked to the vehicle.
09:34Okay, the jeep, the black jeep.
09:40Do you recognize this vehicle?
09:45That vehicle?
09:48I think that's my friend Jose's vehicle.
09:51Okay.
09:52I talked to him earlier today.
09:54One of the things that he told me was that you dropped your car off at his shop and that you borrowed a vehicle of his.
10:02No, it wasn't me.
10:03Well, I definitely talked to Jose, and some things that he said are very different from what you're saying.
10:08And my problem is that I believe that that vehicle was used to commit this murder.
10:21I didn't know what to do with myself.
10:24I didn't know if I was supposed to be angry or sad or disbelief.
10:29It's just that feeling of that your life just completely changed is probably the hardest thing to process.
10:38I wanted to talk to you a little bit specifically about Wednesday, what you were doing Wednesday.
10:54Wednesday?
10:55Wednesday, I was in Carrollton.
10:57I was in school.
10:58I finished in school.
10:59Okay.
11:00I got a ride to Carrollton.
11:01Okay.
11:02And I studied from maybe 12 all the way to like about six.
11:07Who gave you a ride?
11:09Who gave me a ride?
11:10Her, my friend, Crystal.
11:14Crystal?
11:14Mm-hmm.
11:15Okay.
11:15And from Carrollton I went to the Chili's off of George Bush.
11:20I have a receipt in my bag.
11:22I can tell you exactly how my clothes down.
11:24Okay.
11:24And you said you got the receipt in your bag?
11:26Yeah, yeah.
11:26I can show you.
11:27Okay.
11:28Let's get back.
11:29The murder took place at the same time.
11:31Brenda was at the restaurant.
11:33She immediately pulls out the receipt and it's at the top of her wallet.
11:37It's neatly folded.
11:38Can we close that at 8.57?
11:42Okay.
11:45Do you mind if I hang on to this?
11:47Yeah, keep it.
11:48It was just all too convenient.
11:49And for an experienced detective like Barnes, that's what immediately caught his eye that
11:54something's not right here.
11:56You recognize this guy?
11:59Yes.
12:00Who is that?
12:01That's my friend, Jose.
12:03So Jose said that you dropped your car off at his shop on Wednesday, specifically Wednesday.
12:07It was Crystal, my friend Crystal.
12:10Okay.
12:10So did Crystal borrow a vehicle?
12:12Yes.
12:13It was Crystal borrowed a vehicle to take me to the library.
12:16Okay.
12:17So where did Crystal borrow one of his cars?
12:19Yes.
12:20It was that car.
12:21Crystal borrowed his Jeep?
12:22Uh-huh.
12:22Okay.
12:23She got it maybe like around 10, 10.30.
12:27You guys go to his shop on the way to Garrelton and you guys borrowed the Jeep?
12:34She kept the Jeep?
12:36Yeah.
12:36And then she had to go do some errands with her son and do some of the things and that's
12:40all I know.
12:41Okay.
12:42What's Crystal's last name?
12:43Cortez.
12:45Okay.
12:45Because I got a very different story from Jose.
12:50He told me that he was working on a vehicle for you.
12:54No.
12:55He didn't give me the car.
12:56He gave Crystal the car.
12:58I asked her.
12:58She said that she went to do errands and she went to find parking space and that's it.
13:03That's like she had her kid with her.
13:04That's all.
13:05In a parking garage or?
13:06Yeah.
13:07Are you and Crystal related?
13:09No.
13:09Okay.
13:09Because I haven't seen Crystal but I can tell you that that picture of the young lady
13:14driving that Jeep looks a lot like you.
13:16No.
13:16She was driving.
13:18Crystal was driving that car.
13:20Well there's more to the situation than that.
13:22There really is.
13:24Okay.
13:24What I'd like to do is give Crystal a call and see if she can come down here.
13:31Does she have a car?
13:32No.
13:32It's still not working.
13:33Okay.
13:34We'll give her a call real quick and I'll see if we can get her down here.
13:36Brenda said that her friend Crystal was inside the Jeep in the parking garage.
13:41So I felt that getting Crystal in at the same time I had Brenda there would give me an advantage
13:46of kind of using them both against each other to get the tough answers that people don't
13:51normally like giving.
13:53We reached out to Crystal and then I had co-workers pick her up and give her a ride to the office.
13:58And I knew that I needed to keep the conversation with Brenda going while I was waiting for Crystal.
14:03I didn't want her to ask to leave or for her to shut the interview down.
14:07You keep thinking all this is you, okay?
14:09And I'm going to tell you why.
14:09The Jeep, the way Crystal gets the Jeep is through you, okay?
14:15The young lady that ends up dead, her boyfriend, the relation is you.
14:22You to him turn.
14:24Crystal ends up in this parking garage.
14:28Your friend, your friend's Jeep, your ex-boyfriend's girlfriend.
14:33All three of those things point back to you.
14:35That is you.
14:36You're the common theme in all of these things.
14:38So what I'm asking you is, how does this happen?
14:41There's more to this situation than somebody looking for a parking spot.
14:44Somebody looking for a parking spot never got anybody killed.
14:48Yeah, I understand.
14:49She was very unbothered, even by being at a police station talking about a murder.
14:54And I just couldn't find that motion.
14:56That instantly is a red flag.
14:57If you can find that point to bring a motion into it, you can normally kind of break a person
15:02down and get the truth from them at that moment.
15:05When did you find out that his girlfriend was the one that was killed?
15:08Oh, yesterday.
15:09That's been on the news.
15:09Yesterday morning.
15:11And so did you say, well, maybe my friend who is in the news on this picture with this
15:17car, maybe she knows what happened.
15:20Maybe she saw something.
15:21Maybe she should talk to police.
15:23Maybe she can help you find out who killed your girlfriend.
15:25Did you mention any of those things?
15:27I didn't.
15:28I mean, I just didn't really think about it.
15:31You know, you didn't think about it.
15:32You didn't call her to try to confirm, you know, did you see anything?
15:36Did you hear anything?
15:37She said no.
15:38I mean, so you did ask her.
15:39Yeah, I asked Crystal, but she said no.
15:41Well, here's the thing.
15:45I'm going to find out what happened to this young lady.
15:49I owe that to her family.
15:51I owe that to her mom.
15:52Just like I would do the same thing if something happened to you.
15:55Okay.
15:57I'll step out for a minute.
16:00I will be right back.
16:01Okay.
16:02All right.
16:03She was backpedaling and point blame every other place except for herself.
16:07It was only going to go as far as Brenda wanted it to go.
16:10And so at this point, I knew Crystal was who I needed to talk to.
16:15Hello, how are you?
16:17Good, Crystal.
16:18Okay, nice to meet you.
16:19Nice to meet you, too.
16:20What do you want to do in favor of Swiss cheese?
16:21Oh, okay.
16:22Okay, your name came up in this investigation.
16:25Understandable.
16:26It was my understanding that on Wednesday, this past Wednesday, that's when the murder
16:31happened, that you were with Brenda and that you guys were hanging out.
16:37Yep.
16:37This is where we're at with this investigation.
16:40I know what happened.
16:42Okay.
16:42I'm fully aware of what happened and I know that you, I know where you were parked at when
16:48this incident happened.
16:49I guess I was in the parking lot at the time frame.
16:53I heard the gunshot and I'm fearful for my life.
16:56Yes, I was in the parking lot at that time frame.
17:09I wasn't parked, though.
17:11Okay.
17:11That is on video.
17:16It is on video.
17:17Okay.
17:17I wasn't parked, though.
17:19No.
17:20That's not going to work.
17:22This vehicle was parked on the first floor going down near the ramp from P1 to P2.
17:29Because I went to P2, but I just came in and out.
17:32And honestly, I have my son in there.
17:34I did.
17:34I don't have anything to hide, honestly.
17:37No.
17:38That's not going to work either.
17:40I know that what you're telling me is not true.
17:42What I'm telling you is, is that it is captured on video.
17:47Right.
17:47I moved the table out of the way because I wanted to get more of a personal connection
17:56with her.
17:57I could see, you know, your leg twitching.
17:59Or I can see when I ask certain questions, this is what her physical response is.
18:04And I didn't want her to feel like she could kind of hide behind the table any longer.
18:09Okay.
18:09Well, tell me why.
18:10Okay.
18:11I'm pulling in the parking lot.
18:14Before I pull in, there's a guy with a mask.
18:17Right in front of me.
18:18The guy gets in my seat.
18:20And he puts the gun right here.
18:21My son's in the back.
18:22My son is asleep the whole time.
18:23The whole time.
18:24He's like, don't look at me.
18:26Don't say anything to me.
18:27Nothing will happen to you or your kid.
18:29So he tells me to go in, go park.
18:31So then he gets off and he mugs the girl.
18:36I don't know her name.
18:36I don't know anything about her.
18:38And he comes out and he gets in the back seat.
18:41And he sits down and he's like, drive.
18:43Just drive.
18:44He says, I know exactly what your tattoos look like.
18:46I know if you say anything, I'm going to come and get you.
18:48I booked it and I dropped them off.
18:51That was it.
18:52I called it a day.
18:53I don't want anything to do with this.
18:54What did he look like?
18:56He has like medium dreads.
19:00Kind of tall belt, skinny, slim.
19:01I'm honestly, I'm willing to take a postcard.
19:05I'm willing to take a postcard.
19:06Well, there's no need for that because you're not telling me the truth.
19:10You're not telling me the truth.
19:11You want me to believe that some guy pops in your truck and you don't know what's going on.
19:15Do you know who that young lady is that got killed?
19:17No, I don't.
19:18That's Brenda's ex-boyfriend's girlfriend.
19:21Okay, and I've been talking to her today before you got down here.
19:27You need to tell the truth.
19:29I'm telling you.
19:30No, you're not.
19:31You were inside a vehicle that was used in a murder.
19:33Why didn't you call 911 once you found out this happened?
19:39Because I didn't know it was on the news until yesterday that I found out.
19:44I mean, you knew somebody got shot.
19:46I'm scared for my life.
19:47I'm telling you right now, I don't believe this bullshit.
19:50You're telling me that he pulled it, you pulled in this garage into a cage and to sit here with a guy pointing a gun at you and your baby and you think I'm going to believe that?
20:00Nobody will believe that.
20:01Me or anybody else that hears this.
20:04Nobody is going to believe that.
20:06I understand.
20:07Young lady, you don't understand.
20:10Whoever you're protecting is not more important than your son.
20:13That is not a decision I can make for you.
20:16Then you need to tell me the truth.
20:21Brenda just wanted me to take her purse.
20:23That's it.
20:24She wanted you to take her purse?
20:25She wanted me to do it.
20:27Brenda just to take her purse.
20:29Since I don't have a job, I'm not employed right now, I don't have money.
20:33And how does this conversation start?
20:35Has she told you about this girl before?
20:37No.
20:37About her boyfriend?
20:38It was like, um, ex.
20:40That's how she refers to him.
20:42Ex has girlfriend.
20:43And I was like, okay.
20:45She's like, I just want to know more about girlfriend.
20:48That's it.
20:49She's like, I'll pay $500 to take her purse and that's it.
20:53I said, okay.
20:54And then I was like, well, I don't want to do that because I have a kid.
20:58She's like, cool.
20:59We're paying a guy to come in and take her purse and they'll go for me.
21:02Where do you find this guy at?
21:04Just right there at the B&B pawn shop.
21:06There's a pawn shop right there.
21:07He's walking.
21:08I pull up.
21:08Hey.
21:09You pull up in the parking lot?
21:11No.
21:11I'm just driving by.
21:13Do you want to make some quick money?
21:14I say, yeah.
21:15Murders just don't happen like that.
21:18People don't pick up strangers and two strangers hop in a car to go and steal someone's purse
21:25and someone ends up shot in the head.
21:27I just didn't buy that.
21:28There was more truth in that story than what she had previously told me, but I still wasn't
21:34where I needed to be with her.
21:36So you're sitting inside this Jeep, inside this parking garage.
21:40Why did you park where you parked at?
21:42I wanted somebody to see me.
21:43I purposely parked there.
21:46Okay, so.
21:47Because I didn't even know he had a gun.
21:49I really didn't know.
21:51Show me, right?
21:53Draw me a nice picture of what this looks like inside of this place and where you parked at.
21:58Okay.
21:59Here's the main gate, right?
22:01There's two cars.
22:02I parked in between two cars.
22:03So he made me park there first because he said there was no camera.
22:07And then I told him it was this and it's a white Toyota.
22:12You show up there a little after seven and you park.
22:16You sit there for a while and this car drives in.
22:21What do you hear?
22:22No, no, no, no.
22:25Who's saying no?
22:25I think it's the girl, Kendra.
22:27And I hear her, no, no, no, no, no.
22:30Pow.
22:32Done with it.
22:32I didn't see how, where, what.
22:36I don't, I didn't know.
22:37I really didn't know he had a gun.
22:39He was just supposed to go in.
22:40Get her purse.
22:41We were supposed to leave.
22:42Okay.
22:42When you asked the guy, why did he shoot her, what did he say?
22:46She was being stubborn and didn't want to get in the purse.
22:50I said, no, go to the jail and have a son.
22:52And he said, well, you better not say anything because I'm going to kill you and your son.
22:57What did you do after you left the garage with this guy?
22:59I drove down, dropped him off where he told me to drop him off.
23:03I go get Brenda and I go home.
23:05Did you tell anybody about this?
23:07Nobody knows nothing.
23:08At that point, she just owned up to everything that had happened and her part in it.
23:19They have her in the vehicle.
23:21You can clearly see her.
23:23And that's enough probable cause for an arrest.
23:26The information Crystal was able to provide for me basically gave me the foundation for
23:31the investigation and that Brenda was the mastermind.
23:34Now I want to take this information and try to use it with Brenda to see if she gives
23:39me who the shooter was and what the motive was.
23:42I just got done talking to Crystal.
23:45We had a very interesting conversation.
23:46And I know that you haven't been truthful with me.
23:50But I understand what it's like to want something that you can't have.
23:57I also know what it feels like to want something so bad that you're willing to do anything for
24:04it.
24:05Sometimes people do that for money.
24:08Sometimes people do that for attention.
24:10And sometimes people do that for love.
24:13Okay.
24:14And so what I'm asking you for is for the truth.
24:16Do you really expect for me or for anybody else to believe that this girl is dating this
24:36guy that you're still in love with is probably going to marry this guy that you're still in
24:42love with, do you expect the world to believe that you had nothing to do with this, that
24:48you didn't have anything at all, even though you made an arrangement for this young lady
24:52to get in this vehicle?
24:54You set that up.
24:57Crystal, she's got a very good description of how she ended up in that car and how she
25:01ended up in that garage that that belongs to this this young lady that's dating your ex
25:07boyfriend that you still talk to all the time, that you still converse with and share moments
25:13with.
25:13Yes.
25:15And it's not going to take people a whole lot.
25:17This isn't rocket science.
25:19People will put this together very fast.
25:23That's why I'm asking you why.
25:26I honestly, I'm telling you, there was no plan.
25:29There's nothing.
25:30There's no motive.
25:31I have no reason.
25:32Oh, there's plenty of motive.
25:34There's plenty of motive.
25:35You cannot have him as long as she's alive.
25:40Everybody has feelings and everybody has a point where they break.
25:44Everybody has a wall.
25:46And that's what I think happened.
25:47I mean, like I'm saying, it was just very casual.
25:52Casual doesn't end up with somebody dead.
25:57No, absolutely not.
25:58So why do you want his girlfriend dead?
26:01I don't.
26:03I didn't even know who he was seeing.
26:04I don't even know who he was dating.
26:06Okay.
26:08You don't know.
26:09You don't know.
26:14Give me a second.
26:18Can I just get my attorney at this time?
26:20Because I don't think we, I mean, there's not, there's, I just need my attorney because
26:25you're not understanding me.
26:27You can have your attorney.
26:29You can have your attorney.
26:30That's fine.
26:31So you're terminating this interview.
26:33Yeah, I need my attorney because I'm, I'm done.
26:36I'm tired.
26:36And I just need my attorney too.
26:39Okay.
26:40All right.
26:41We were unable to charge her with murder at the time.
26:47We didn't have enough solid evidence, but Brenda had a couple of unpaid traffic tickets
26:51that had turned into warrants.
26:53And we decided to arrest her for her unpaid traffic tickets.
26:57We decided that she needed to go to jail.
27:00And that was all we could do at the time.
27:02She immediately left the United States and headed to Mexico.
27:18It lets you know that you're on the right track, that this person is involved.
27:23And in fact, in court, flight can be introduced as evidence of guilt.
27:26It was one of those things that we're like, it just kind of sucks the air out of you for
27:32a second.
27:32Once you step foot outside of the state of Texas, my badge is no good anymore.
27:38So at this moment, the focus of the case was now identifying a shooter.
27:44Crystal is our best witness.
27:46If we are going to get Brenda, if we are going to get a shooter, we're going to have to use
27:50Crystal.
27:56Crystal had also described the shooter having a scar on his hand.
28:16You want all the individuals that are involved in the offense, but almost certainly the person
28:22that had no qualms about getting out of a car and just shooting someone in the head,
28:27you're going to want to get that person and get that person off the street.
28:38We basically took Crystal's phone records, Brenda's phone records, and we were able to
28:43come up with a number that was similar to both records that they'd spoken with numerous
28:48times, and we found that number was contacted on the day of the murder.
28:53They identify who the phone number belongs to, find out his name is Christopher Love.
28:58They're able to locate an actual photograph of Christopher Love, and he resembles the sketch
29:03that Crystal had provided.
29:05One thing that I was able to learn about him is that he'd been arrested numerous times in
29:11his life, going all the way back to his juvenile years.
29:14He's got a criminal history for some violent offenses, and he had also done some time for
29:19his involvement in those offenses.
29:21I feel pretty good about the possibility that this is my shooter.
29:25So we did a ping order on the phone, which allowed for us every 15 minutes to track a physical
29:30location of this phone.
29:42The FBI noticed that the coordinates of the phone started moving at the same time a blue
29:48Chrysler Sebring was driving out of the parking lot.
29:51The FBI followed the blue Chrysler Sebring, and once an individual got out of the car, they
29:56made contact with him, and the individual was named Christopher Love.
30:00Outside of his physical appearance and similarity to the sketch, he also was in possession of
30:07this cell phone that had been in contact with Brendo and Crystal also on the day of the murder.
30:24The interview with Christopher was very challenging.
30:27He was pretty much unknown to the case until a few minutes before I'm sitting down with
30:32him in a room.
30:34The surveillance video of the murder, I couldn't 100% say that it's him because it's a grainy
30:38video.
30:39But I'm going to work him as long as I need to, to get him to tell me the truth.
30:44My name's Detective Boyd.
30:46I'm working the murder investigation.
30:48Your name came up during the investigation, okay?
30:50There was a dentist that was killed.
30:53Have you heard anything about that?
30:57And so I need to speak with you in regards to this murder.
31:04All right.
31:05This is my partner, Chaney.
31:06What's up, man?
31:08Let me see your hands real quick, man.
31:09I was looking at your hands.
31:12You got a scar right here on this hand.
31:14What happened to your hand right here?
31:16Somebody shot me.
31:17You got shot?
31:18Mm-hmm.
31:20They tried to rob me in Memphis.
31:22They tried to conject me in a way.
31:24They bullied my hand right there.
31:26They noticed the scar on his hand that Crystal had described the shooter having.
31:32It's a match.
31:33That by itself is enough of what we call probable cause.
31:37But it wouldn't have been enough for the conviction.
31:39Okay.
31:40Well, here's the thing, man.
31:41Me and my partner got called in on September 2nd to work a murder over in Uptown.
31:49You know where Uptown is in Dallas?
31:51No.
31:52Have you heard anything about that?
31:54There was a dentist that was killed.
31:57A dentist?
31:58A dentist.
31:59Kendra Hatcher.
32:00Was killed in a parking garage.
32:02That was the kind of thing to me.
32:05Okay.
32:06You know a female by the name of Crystal?
32:11You don't know Crystal Cortez?
32:15What about a Brenda Delgado?
32:18No.
32:20Have you ever seen this girl?
32:21I don't think so.
32:24Okay.
32:25What about it?
32:29I don't know these people.
32:31Let me ask you this.
32:32Have you ever rode in a black Jeep Cherokee?
32:35I ain't rode in no Jeep Cherokee.
32:37Okay.
32:37Your name came up in this investigation as being friends with these two girls.
32:47That you know these two girls.
32:50From where?
32:51Is it here?
32:52I don't know how you met them.
32:53That's why I'm talking to you today to figure out if you do know them.
32:58And if you do know them, you know, maybe there's a reason why you know them.
33:01No.
33:01What I'm interested in is how your phone number will end up in these girls' phones.
33:10That's probably weird.
33:13You ever go to North Dallas?
33:17No reason your phone records would put you there either, is it?
33:21I don't know.
33:25Dallas people is crazy.
33:27Why you say that?
33:29Because of this.
33:30This is crazy right here.
33:32What's crazy?
33:33What's crazy about it?
33:34That I'm sitting in a homicide officer named D.
33:36Well, we got to clean this up, man.
33:40This young lady right here was able to very distinctly provide me details about how you
33:45look and where she has been with you.
33:48Now, for her not to know you, she pulling a lot of damn details out of nowhere.
33:53That's what I understand.
33:56And whatever you say is cool.
33:58But I didn't do this, bro.
33:59Now, I'm going to ask you about the next girl lady.
34:03And wait, she's right here.
34:05To me, she's a lethal.
34:07Like a lethal weapon.
34:10She's the one that, you know how when they put the, when they looking at a crime family,
34:16they always had a top picture at the top.
34:19And then they had a spider web coming down.
34:21Her picture's up there.
34:22She's number one.
34:23You get what I'm saying?
34:24I'm going to ask you, once we get her, when she says she know you, she point the finger
34:31at you.
34:33That's what I'm talking about.
34:34I don't know if she's going to point the finger at me because I can't control her.
34:37I said, that's a low question, sir.
34:39I just said she don't know me.
34:40No, she don't know me.
34:41Can I get something to drink?
34:49Yeah, what you want to drink, man?
34:51I want some coffee, but I don't take anything.
34:54Man, why do, why do people talking like you are involved in a situation, man?
35:00I said, that's what I'm thinking about right now.
35:03Huh?
35:03I said, that's what I'm thinking about right now.
35:05It's it.
35:07And they providing facts of how to prove that you involved in a...
35:12Man, I don't give a what they provide.
35:15He's nonchalant.
35:16He doesn't know anything.
35:17He didn't do it.
35:18You know, this goes on for hours.
35:19I don't have a good...
35:21A lot of times, people call me for weed on my phone.
35:28I don't know them.
35:29I know I ain't never rode with them, for sure.
35:32Ain't no weapon.
35:33I got a time right now for a weapon.
35:36These places I got no cameras, dude.
35:38What do you think you got killed?
35:40Come on, you know I got cameras.
35:42So they know what the shit will look like.
35:44It's a lot of stuff that is being done to this case.
35:48So we're rolling into the next morning.
35:50At that point, we had been up all night,
35:52and we're taking a break from the interrogation
35:54to kind of refocus and reshift.
35:56One of my coworkers went out to the auto pound
35:59where Christopher Love's car was at,
36:01and the K-9 began doing a sniff search on the blue Chrysler.
36:06The K-9 alerted to gunpowder immediately,
36:09and they found a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun
36:12tucked behind the center console
36:13and on the passenger side of the vehicle.
36:15The magazine laying next to the body
36:17belonged to a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun.
36:21We did ballistic testing,
36:23and we knew it was the firearm for the murder.
36:26It kind of gave me a second wind.
36:28Everything kind of opened up for me again,
36:30so I wanted to confront him
36:31with a picture of this firearm
36:33and give him an opportunity to explain it.
36:34We need to have a conversation, all right?
36:39We need to search for one of your car.
36:45I'm gonna find a guy in your car.
36:49I'm gonna find a guy in your car.
36:51All right.
36:54Yes.
36:54Detective Barnes confronted him
37:12with a murder weapon,
37:13and then that's when you start seeing him
37:15being more willing to share information.
37:18How did you get linked up with Brenda?
37:21Custom.
37:22So give me a rundown of this day, man.
37:25I got up, went over there,
37:27served a little weed and s***.
37:30Crystal.
37:30She came over there about five,
37:32and we were all over there.
37:34Where'd y'all go?
37:36Downtown.
37:38How did you know what time to be there?
37:40I didn't.
37:42They knew all the information.
37:43S***.
37:45All my information was to snatch your ID.
37:48I need the ID, the ID, the ID.
37:51That's all there was, the ID.
37:52Who else was in the car with y'all?
37:54There wasn't nobody but us.
37:56Her son wasn't in there?
37:57No.
37:58Yeah, man.
38:00No, it was just you and Crystal in there?
38:02Yeah.
38:04What kind of conversation did you have
38:05with Brenda about this?
38:07Or what did she tell you?
38:09She came in with the cartel.
38:10It was just like, go take this for the cartel and I'm going to pay you.
38:17And she told you she was from the cartel?
38:19Yeah.
38:19And Christopher is told that Brenda Delgado is with the cartel.
38:24And if he agrees to do this, she'll make sure that he has enough cocaine to sell for as long as he wants to sell cocaine.
38:34So in his mind, this is his way to go from a small-time drug dealer to a big-time drug dealer.
38:40So he agrees to do it.
38:42When y'all going to get Brenda?
38:44We're going to work on getting Brenda, man.
38:46Because she the f***ing puzzler y'all.
38:49The top of the puzzler y'all need.
38:51What I mean?
38:51We're going to go get her.
38:53You can promise that.
38:54You can be promising.
38:54Yeah, because they've been doing this s*** or planning it or whatever they've been doing.
39:00Whatever happened, happened a couple months ago.
39:03Three, four months ago.
39:06They've been watching this lady for three, four months.
39:10Yeah, they ran some game money.
39:14The girl that got killed was Brenda's.
39:17His boyfriend's new girlfriend.
39:20Brenda's?
39:20Yeah.
39:22She didn't have nothing to do with any cartel.
39:24She was just a dentist.
39:25They go to work every day.
39:27Just a regular person.
39:30Fake-ass, mother f***ing cartel.
39:32Leave us a f***.
39:33Fake-ass s***.
39:35They need to go to jail with me.
39:37F***ing I'm going to jail.
39:39They might as well go to them.
39:43Okay.
39:43Well, I'm going to go knock this paperwork out.
39:45All right.
39:45It was a very quick and short-lived round of high fives going around the office.
39:59But I think the immediate thing was, what can we do now to get Brenda in custody?
40:13Brenda Delgado did not pull the trigger, but police say she planned and paid for others to carry out the heinous crime.
40:19Now, she's become the ninth woman in history to make the FBI's ten most wanted lists since it began in 1950.
40:27After placing her on this list, we started receiving phone calls relaying intelligence of where her whereabouts were at.
40:35When I found out she was captured, there was a lady that was sitting next to me, a complete random stranger, explained everything.
40:53And I was like, can I have a hug?
40:54She's like, yeah, I gave a big hug.
40:56And so, yeah, overwhelming feelings of joy.
41:05You introduced me to new feelings of absolute hatred and disgust, things I've never thought I could feel before.
41:28Your ability to destroy lives, both emotionally and physically, with despicable and incomprehensible.
41:33You are a shame to humanity, and you are a destroyer of lives.
41:39May God have mercy on you.
41:46We tried Brenda's case eight months later.
41:49Jury was only out 20 minutes before they came back with a guilty verdict.
41:53For capital murder, she received a life without parole.
41:55Brenda Delgado, justice has been served for the people whose lives were touched in one way or another
42:08by this incredible, amazing woman who I was honored to be Kendra Hatcher's mother.
42:19There is no reason in the world that that young lady should be dead.
42:29None.
42:30She's a completely innocent victim.
42:32That makes it even more ridiculous for this to have taken place.
42:36After Brenda was found guilty, me and my family were at the hotel,
42:39and there's this big rainbow that's, like, filling up the Dallas sky.
42:45I can feel that she's kind of my guardian angel.
42:49I want people to know that when they do come across somebody like Kendra,
42:56to really cherish it.
42:58If it is true that the good die young, then make every moment count.
