Bulgarian government resigns after mass anti-corruption protests

Tens of thousands gathered across Bulgaria on Wednesday to demand Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov's resignation, with protesters accusing the government of widespread corruption. The demonstrations come weeks before Bulgaria joins the eurozone on 1 January.

00:00Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Rosenzeliaskov, resigned on Thursday after tens of thousands

00:12allegations of widespread corruption. Media estimates based on drone footage put the number
00:17of demonstrators at over 100,000, with some reports claiming up to 150,000 people had
00:24gathered in the Bulgarian capital. Students from Sofia's universities joined the rallies,
00:29which organizers said exceeded last week's protests that drew more than 50,000 people.
00:35Further protests took place in more than 25 major cities across Bulgaria,
00:40including Plovdiv, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo and Rasgrad. Bulgarians abroad also gathered on
00:46Wednesday with demonstrations held in Brussels, London, Berlin, Vienna, Zurich and New York.
00:52The demands included the resignation of the government and better living and working conditions.
