Transcript
00:00good all right so first and foremost we're really excited to have you here
00:05tonight and in this room of incredible and successful women so what does it
00:11mean to you to be honored at the Gen Next Awards I think that it's really
00:15incredible that they're focusing on young women who are trying to enter into
00:20this industry at a time where women are really stepping to the forefront and
00:24banding together and saying this is what we deserve this is what we're worth and
00:29this group of women is no different really excellent people women in the
00:35industry and the entertainment industry are really taking a big role in not just
00:40in front of the camera rolls but behind the camera rolls what do you think has
00:43to why do you think there's been kind of this reckoning of women just wanting to
00:48be in leadership position not wanting to but actually getting these leadership
00:51positions I mean I remember when I was younger all of these guys around me all
00:58of my male friends were like grabbing their dad's camcorder and starting to
01:03put stuff on film and I remember not feeling invited like there's there was
01:08definitely an attitude of this is what we're doing and you can act in and if we
01:14say that you can but otherwise we're making a movie and I think that that's not
01:20just an attitude that I felt when I was a teenager and I was watching my male
01:24friends make movies but that I see around us and it for a long time was like
01:30there's one chair at the table whichever woman occupies that chair they have to
01:35move in order for another woman to come through and now women are just dragging
01:40up more chairs and going I'm gonna be a producer because I'm gonna have a say so
01:45in what happens to this role I'm going to say what happens to my character I'm
01:50really excited by that possibility I want to do anything I can to get my voice heard
01:57and so if that's producing or directing or writing great we need more chairs at
02:02the table absolutely love that I love the kind of analogy of pulling chairs up to
02:08the table and so you know right now you are in godless and you have a new show
02:13coming up on Netflix private life yes so tell me a little bit about your
02:17character in private life because she seems to kind of in personality just
02:21meeting you for these first few minutes to be a lot like you she I'd like to
02:26think that I'm a little less aimless than her but I do think I do think that there
02:31is something in that of having people tell you what you should be doing and
02:36having that make it difficult for you to figure out what you want to be doing I'm
02:43was very lucky to figure out what I wanted to do at a very early age that
02:47doesn't seem to be this character's experience and she's trying to figure
02:52out how to make herself a a woman in the world and say what she wants to say and
02:59I think she has a lot less of a filter than I do but the thing that I loved is I
03:04apologize way too much for everything and there is nothing that comes out of her
03:10mouth that she apologizes for and so playing a woman who's really
03:15unapologetic was was a blast teach you a lesson in your own life like did you do
03:22you take these like lessons kind of from your characters and keep them with you
03:26and learn from that I check myself constantly I'll apologize and then I
03:30I'll say to someone I'm actually not sorry for that I'll just check myself and go
03:36you have no reason to apologize for existing and moving through the world
03:41well and so if you could look back at your younger self and give her some
03:47advice on working through the world and being a woman in this world what would
03:51you say
03:51hmm that you're gonna make mistakes and you're gonna do things wrong and and
03:58things are aren't gonna work out and that's a really good thing because when
04:04things do work out you'll be ready is there a is there anything right now that
04:11you feel strongly about you're passionate about that you're working towards
04:16maybe not just in your industry but in the world yeah yesterday my brother came
04:22out as trans about a year ago and so I've been trying to figure out how I can be
04:28involved as a as a better ally and a better sister and figure out how to how
04:34to hear what he's going through and I saw that yesterday they were talking about
04:39the first ever suicide hotline for trans people which is incredibly important and
04:45made me feel like those those things are moving in the right direction how do you
04:51think that we can get more people on board that may not have you know it's fine
04:56that people have different beliefs that's always gonna happen it's chocolate and
04:59vanilla but how do we get more people on board it to be open-minded to just
05:05accept others and love others for who they are just empathy and I think that
05:12oftentimes and growing up in the south I saw this a lot there was a desire to
05:17just take care of yourself and your family and the people immediately around you and I
05:24think people need to extend what their neighbor is further than they can see
05:29they have to really think about taking care of other people like they would take
05:37care of their family and then finally what is next for you work wise life wise I
05:44mean private life and godless but private life comes out October 5th and I'm
05:49really excited for that and I'll be doing a film with Allison Janney and Hugh
05:55Jackman next month called bad education so I'm looking forward to that amazing
05:59well congratulations thank you for being here tonight
