00:00Trump mocked for failed revenge tour.
00:03The Wall Street Journal issued a sharply critical editorial after two high-profile cases brought
00:08by President Donald Trump's Department of Justice, targeting former FBI Director James
00:13Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, were thrown out in court.
00:19In an editorial titled The Gang That Couldn't Indite Straight, the Journal argued that the
00:23dismissals represented a significant setback for Trump's efforts to prosecute political
00:27adversaries.
00:29According to the paper, President Trump's lawfare revenge tour has gone bust, following
00:34a judge's ruling that federal prosecutor Lindsey Halligan wasn't properly appointed as a federal
00:39prosecutor and had no authority to indict.
00:42In its rush for retribution, the Trump administration cut corners, the editorial said, emphasizing
00:48that the legal defeat stemmed from fundamental errors in Halligan's appointment under federal
00:52vacancy rules.
00:54The paper noted the judge's finding that the law was designed for a temporary fill-in, not
00:59Senate circumvention, adding that Halligan has been unlawfully serving, and her efforts
01:04to indict Comey and James amounted to unlawful exercises of executive power.
01:09The editorial concluded with a warning about the consequences of such missteps.
01:14This is what happens when officials don't follow legal procedure.
01:19Trump was so eager to indict his enemies and Attorney General Pam Bondi was so quick to go along that it all
01:25unraveled at the pull of one legal thread, the paper said.
01:28It also suggested the administration could attempt to refile the charges, though the statute of
01:34limitations may have expired in Mr. Comey's case, before cautioning that if Trump tried again,
01:39he might end up with cases that are two-time legal losers.
01:43I still think the bottom-line problem with the case is that the charge itself is incoherent,
01:48and I think they may lose on the face of the indictment, McCarthy told Fox viewers.
