00:01The U.S. House of Representatives has approved the repeal of the Caesar Act sanctions on Syria,
00:08a law imposed to hold the Assad regime accountable, but one that also affected the lives of Syrian citizens.
00:17The law imposed sanctions, including travel bans and financial isolation,
00:22on anyone who finances or obstructs a political solution in Syria or who provides the Assad regime at the time.
00:30With resources or military technology.
00:33The law was named after a Syrian military photographer who leaked more than 50,000 images,
00:39documenting the torture and killing of more than 11,000 detainees inside regime prisons.
00:46President Trump signed the law during his first term in 2019, and it went into effect in 2020.
00:53A World Bank report revealed that the Caesar Act exacerbated the economic crisis, increased inflation and poverty rates,
01:03and contributed to the collapse of the national currency and the deterioration of living conditions for millions of Syrians.
01:10Its repeal is considered a pivotal step that grants Syria an opportunity for economic recovery after years of paralysis and isolation.
