00:00We got a phone call.
00:01Yellow, who that?
00:03Hey, man, I was just calling to say you got the coolest name in radio out there.
00:07This is Ty Herndon.
00:08How you doing, man?
00:10Ty Herndon.
00:11Hey, yeah, man, because Scott Stout ain't that interesting, you know, so.
00:15You had me going, Yahoo!
00:17Hi-ee.
00:18Hi-ee.
00:19That's great.
00:20That's a little bit country, a little bit other.
00:23Yeah.
00:23A little bit country, a little bit gumbo.
00:25Ty Herndon, man, I tell you.
00:27I'm, uh, I don't know, man.
00:30I'm just more than over-excited about having you here, man.
00:34That's a blessing.
00:35Thank you, brother.
00:37Hey, let me know how I'm, there we go.
00:41There we go.
00:42I got it fixed.
00:43I corrected it.
00:43I don't need you, handsome Jack.
00:45Never mind.
00:45Speaking of handsome, we got handsome on the phone himself.
00:49Ty Herndon.
00:49Oh, thank you, man.
00:50As my mom, my mama says, compliments to get you some chicken and dumplings.
00:55That's it, man.
00:56Feed me.
00:56Feed me some more.
00:58I don't know where to start with you, and I say this a lot of times when I chat with
01:01Ars because there's just so much.
01:03I mean, um, I mean, we can go back all the way back.
01:07I came over on the Ark, so there's just a lot to cover.
01:10Yeah.
01:11You came over on the Grizzly River.
01:13I did.
01:14Now, how's that for a reference?
01:16That's great, man.
01:18Grizzly River Rampage.
01:19And then, uh, when y'all went from the Grizzly River Boys to the Tennessee River Boys, and
01:25then, uh...
01:26Right on to Diamond Rio.
01:28That's right.
01:28So, all right, so those of y'all who, um, been under a rock, if you don't know, Ty Herndon was with a little group in Opryland USA called Tennessee River Boys.
01:44And, um, they turned that, Ty decided that he wanted to do bigger and better things, so he let them pick up Mr. Rowe.
01:55Mr. Marty Rowe.
01:56Mr. Marty Rowe.
01:57He said, y'all go be Diamond Rio.
01:58I'm gonna go do my own thing.
02:00And that's the story I heard.
02:02Am I right or no?
02:03That's right, man.
02:04Well, I actually went to do a television show called Star Search, which was the original American Idol, and, um, we were all working at Opryland USA, which is here in Nashville.
02:14It was, anyway, a long time ago, but, um, the boys were so supportive, and they just said, yeah, man, go do this TV thing, and Marty actually came and sat in with the boys when I was off in California doing that, and it just, it was a better fit, and I knew it, and, um, and so I, I, uh, I graciously bowed out and, and, you know, went about my solo career, and those boys made the right decision.
02:39I'm glad you did, man.
02:40I'm glad you did.
02:41I'm glad, because I'm glad we got, I'm glad we have Ty Herndon.
02:44If I had Ty Herndon and Diamond Rio, I wouldn't want just, like, Ty Herndon in Diamond Rio.
02:52So, we got the best of both worlds.
02:54And just, again, I don't know, like, I'm just stammering.
02:57I got, hey, hey, hey, Dad, I'm talking to Ty Herndon right now.
03:02Ha, ha.
03:03Hey, Dad.
03:05Hey, roll tide.
03:06So, listen, man, Meridian, Mississippi.
03:07Roll tide, yes, sir.
03:08Meridian, Mississippi?
03:10Is that right?
03:11Yeah, I was born in Meridian, Mississippi.
03:13That was actually the closest, closest hospital to Butler, Alabama.
03:16So, it was about 14 miles away.
03:18So, I was born in Mississippi, hustled right back to Alabama, and I still play with both.
03:21That's right, because I was born in Pascagoula.
03:24There you go.
03:25My parents lived in Bala Battery at times, so my dad worked in Ingalls Shipyard, and it
03:30was closer for him to, for me to be born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, than it was Mobile,
03:34Alabama.
03:35Figure that out.
03:36Don't you love all these southern names, man, for these little towns?
03:39Yeah, Chutica-Buffa River.
03:41You got the Chutica-Buffa River, right?
03:43Yeah, but my band still laughs at Pulaski, Alabama.
03:47I feel like that's a name.
03:49That's it, man.
03:50And I said, hey, I was just, I just was down there for a Pensacola Singer-Songwriter
03:56Festival, and I'm driving along, and they got a bridge called the Dolly Parton Bridge
04:03down there, and I don't know if you're familiar with it, and it's, it's, it's not even, they
04:08just called that because the, the archways look like, so, anyway.
04:14I was going to reference that, but I was afraid to.
04:16Yeah, so, so you can just Google Dolly Parton Bridge.
04:19So, anyway, so I'm driving along, and I call my, I call my Yankee bride, and I said, hey,
04:24darling, she goes, where you at?
04:25And I said, I said, I don't know, you know, because I'm tooling down from New York, going
04:30back home to see my dad, and I said, let me look for a sign, and I said, well, I'm passing
04:34River Creek Lake Road right now.
04:39River Creek Lake Road.
04:41Yeah.
04:42She's like, where are you?
04:43I was like, somebody, either somebody didn't, like, well, it's going to be, it's got to be
04:48something, it's water here, but, well, they couldn't come up with a name of it, so, yeah,
04:54there's nothing about the South, man.
04:56I love that, man.
04:57Yeah, I got to look up that.
04:57I love being from the South, man.
04:59I tell you, I, you know, my book is coming out in March, it's next year, and all those
05:04Southern references, you know, it, it turned this book into, you know, fried green tomatoes
05:09and still magnolias meets the Kardashians, you know, my, my, my, my story's crazy, but
05:14it's, it's, it's a lot of fun, it's also, you know, it's, it's, it's, it's just, it's
05:19fun and full of heartbreak and full of redemption.
05:21I know, and that's the whole thing, man.
05:23Like, you, you don't wear your heart, I mean, I guess you do, you put your heart in your
05:27sleep.
05:27I was going to talk about that, because, I mean, what, what mattered most is, I mean, that's,
05:34that's the book, that's the story of your life, everything.
05:37And then, and you put it out there, I mean, you talk about trials and tribulations in,
05:41in your personal life, in the music life, and so, um, is there anything that, that's
05:46not in the book that you, that you want to share?
05:49There's probably some things that shouldn't be in the book, but, you know, if you're going
05:52to tell your story, you tell it all, and actually, this, this book starts out with, with, with
05:57a note from me, just, just telling the readers, look, you know, as much as I want you to love
06:02me and like me by the middle of this book, you're not going to.
06:04And I said, but keep reading, because hopefully by the end of it, you know, we'll, we'll, we'll
06:11have a great relationship again.
06:12So it's, you know, it's, it's, it's a hard story to tell.
06:15It's, it's, it's, it, you know, and you're doing a timeline of your life and, um, you know,
06:20it's, and, and, you know, I also have a note in there just going out to, you know, it's
06:24for all of you who are still in my life, all of you who had to go away, you know, this
06:28book is for you.
06:28And, and, you know, this is, this is, uh, you know, it's, it's, somebody asked me earlier
06:33in the interview, it's like, you know, you're not airing in the dirty laundry.
06:36I said, isn't my life enough of that?
06:38I said, I'm just telling my story, not anybody else's.
06:40There you go.
06:41I mean, that's it.
06:42You know, my grandma said, she said, it's okay to blow your own horn because nobody knows
06:46your tune better than you.
06:48You know?
06:48Amen.
06:49So I love my grandma's sayings, man.
06:50I'm glad you said that.
06:51Yes.
06:52Yes.
06:52So, so, um, yeah, like you talked about relationships and on this, on, uh, I think it's called 30
06:59volume one, right?
07:01My grandma said, a lie is a lie.
07:02That ain't going in my batter and my biscuits.
07:07I love that.
07:08I'm sorry.
07:09What was the question?
07:10No.
07:10So here we go.
07:10Yeah.
07:11You know, my grandma said a bunch of stuff one time.
07:13She's Hey, Hey Ty, you know, difference between being ignorant and being an idiot.
07:18Nope.
07:19Ignorance is a latchet, lack of education.
07:23Idiocy is a lack of application.
07:25I love that.
07:26And it works like this.
07:27If you reach out and you pick up a tea kettle and you burn your hand because you was ignorant
07:33to the fact that it was hot.
07:34One of the, you know, that's ignorance.
07:37Now, if both hands are burnt, you're an idiot.
07:41You're an idiot.
07:44Oh my God.
07:45I should, you know, there's a couple of chapters.
07:47I should have been titled idiot, Lord have mercy.
07:49But, you know, it's, it's, it's, it's, I'm going to New York after Thanksgiving to, I'm
07:54going to do the audio book myself, which is, it's very encouraged.
07:58You know, I'm going to be in the city.
08:01How long are you going to be up there, man?
08:03About, you know, about a week.
08:04Cause I'm going to stay a few extra days.
08:06Cause my friend Kristen.
08:07I mean, you come over, I'll feed you, man.
08:08You want some.
08:09Okay.
08:09Oh, did you just drop, did you just drop Kristen Chinworth?
08:14Well, she's, yeah.
08:15Come on, man.
08:17We met each other at Opry land.
08:18You know, we were friends a long time.
08:20She's also married, married to the greatest guitar player.
08:23Who's actually my guitar player.
08:26So we just, uh, uh, Josh Bryant.
08:29He's, he's, he's amazing.
08:31So she's, she's Kristen Chinworth Bryant now, but she, uh, they're cute together, but she's
08:36got her, she's back on Broadway first time since wicked.
08:38So we're going to stay a few days and see, see her new musical.
08:41All right, man.
08:42Listen, if you don't come over, let me make you some gumbo.
08:45All right.
08:45We just want to quit playing.
08:47See, I can't even do that.
08:48I can't even threaten not to play your music.
08:50Cause it's so damn good.
08:51I'll come up with some.
08:53You may have to bring me a bowl at the hotel.
08:56We'll have a coffee.
08:57There you go, man.
08:59Make some homemade beignets or something.
09:02Oh my goodness.
09:03You can give me that.
09:03I got a cookbook coming.
09:04I mean, you can give me that recipe.
09:06All right, man.
09:07We'll do, we'll do.
09:09Well, gumbo ya-ya.
09:09This is a gumbo ya-ya radio show.
09:11And we started the show, uh, 13 years ago.
09:14It was about food and music and fellowship.
09:18So, uh, we have a manager.
09:20My manager is a fan, man.
09:22He's, he's, he's a fan.
09:23He's, he's, he's the one that set this up because you got to talk to these guys.
09:26I'd love to.
09:27Zeke Stokes.
09:28Zeke.
09:28Yeah.
09:28Zeke.
09:29I'm stoked for Stokes, man.
09:30He's, I tell you, you, you're lucky.
09:33That guy works.
09:34That guy works.
09:34I mean, he's, he's, he's on it.
09:38He is on it.
09:39Time, everything.
09:41But, uh.
09:41He says, he, he says he manages two households.
09:44Let's do this, man.
09:45Let's stop, let's, let's stop talking and let's chat about something here.
09:48All right.
09:49Let's do it.
09:49Um, Ty Herndon.
09:5230 is the name of the album.
09:53Volume one.
09:54Is that right?
09:55And you're going to put out more.
09:55That's right.
09:56And you talked about relationships.
09:58You have Christian Chinworth.
09:59You have Chrissy Metz.
10:00You have Leanne Rimes, Ashley McBride, all these wonderful people that are joining you on this.
10:06Um, how did, how were you, like, how do you do that?
10:10How do you get such great talent to say, yeah, we want to revisit these tunes?
10:15Well, I, I know these people, I don't know their hearts and they all have a story.
10:19Every one of them, you know, uh, with, with Leanne, we were, I've known her since she was
10:2312.
10:23So she, you know, we were on tour together.
10:25She'd come out and sing what mattered most with me.
10:27And so that was a no brainer.
10:28I called her up and I said, man, with all these artists, I said, take full liberty.
10:34Do not do them like I did them.
10:36I'm going to sing, I'm going to stick close to, you know, to the originals because, you know,
10:40you don't really want to mess with a classic song and not have some familiar air to you with it.
10:43But Leanne, you know, she, she sat in her, uh, in her studio floor with a, holding a microphone.
10:50She called me.
10:51I didn't even know what she was going to do.
10:52You know, I said, just do what you want.
10:54And she, uh, she said, Herndon, she goes, that was a workout.
11:00I said, you killed it.
11:02Ashley, she and her mom loved man holding on.
11:05So that was a no brainer.
11:07And then Michael Ray, uh, hands down his dad's favorite song was hands of a working man in the nineties.
11:12So he came in and killed it.
11:13And then, you know, Heart Up Empty with Kristen, um, you know, she's such a world-class vocalist.
11:18You know, I definitely wanted to do something that, that really maybe showed the country fans something they hadn't seen from her.
11:25And she just came in and, you know, the original with Stephanie Bentley, she, she, she, she honored some of those melodies.
11:33And then she took liberty with her own and just, just made it amazing.
11:37And then Chrissy is a new friend, but man, I love her heart.
11:41She is such a champion for, uh, for people to win and, you know, and to feel good.
11:46And, you know, she's had her own mental health challenges.
11:49And she said, uh, and she, she said this song, she goes, you know, I was such a fan of the nineties.
11:53She goes, I would just, she goes, I would just play this song.
11:56She said, and I, I was, she said, I was that girl who was dreaming of a romance, just going, oh, I want to meet, I want to meet that guy.
12:02Hey, Ty, you know, um, so this is supposed to be about you.
12:07You know that this is, we're interviewing Ty Herndon.
12:09Here you are talking about all these other people.
12:11God bless you, man.
12:13Don't you know how to do an interview, man?
12:15You're supposed to talk about yourself some.
12:17Come on.
12:18You know, it took me, it took, it, it, it, I've talked to myself for so long it's boring.
12:23No, it's great.
12:24So let me do this.
12:24I want to play, um, cause you talked about Chrissy and she wants to be wanted in that track y'all do.
12:29Let me give that a play for, um, for our listeners real quick.
12:32You hold on.
12:33I'm going to come back.
12:33I want to talk to you about that.
12:35Oh, by the way, it's, uh, it's in Crayola, Alabama.
12:38It's the general WK Wilson Jr. Bridge.
12:40No better known in Crayola as the Dolly Parton Bridge.
12:44So for y'all want to look that up there, it's, uh, it's buxom.
12:48Let's put it that way.
12:50But, uh, we'll come back.
12:51I want to talk about that.
12:52I want to talk about, you talked about, um, you know, personal demons and struggles and things like that.
12:57Um, music, where are you going to go?
12:59How to get the autograph CD senior in New York, all that other good stuff.
13:03So, um, let me do this.
13:05Ladies and gentlemen, we're going to put Ty Herndon on hold.
13:08She wants to be wanted.
13:10Ty Herndon, his new friend, Chrissy Metz here on the Gumbo Ya Ya Radio Show.
13:15Hold on, Ty.
13:16She gets the kids up and off to school.
13:42Her work's never done, till the day is through.
13:48Oh, same old routine, over and over again.
13:54There's a lot of this world that she's never seen.
14:04She married young to the boy of her dreams.
14:09And to this day, that's something she wouldn't change.
14:18But she longs for the way he used to whisper her name.
14:27She wants to be wanted.
14:32She knows that she's needed.
14:37She wants moonlight and romance.
14:43Soft music and a slow dance.
14:48She wants him to hold her like he's never touched her.
14:59And that's how I'll begin.
15:03She wants to be wanted again.
15:08It's Friday night, and he's on his way home.
15:23She's making plans for them to be alone.
15:28Took the kids to her mama's.
15:31They're gonna spend the night.
15:34They're gonna spend the night.
15:38And she's hoping he'll notice.
15:41How a new dress fits her just right.
15:46She wants to be wanted.
15:52She knows that she's needed.
15:57She wants moonlight and romance.
16:03Soft music and a slow dance.
16:08She wants him to hold her like he's never touched her.
16:18Oh, and that's how love begins.
16:22She wants to be wanted again.
16:27And that's how love begins.
16:29And that's how love begins.
16:32She wants to be wanted again.
16:34She wants to be wanted again.
16:38It's Friday night, and he's on his way home.
16:45To the kids to my house.
16:47She's making plans for them to be alone.
16:50And the sound will begin.
16:53She wants to be wanted again.
16:57Oh, and that's how love begins.
16:58Oh, and that's how love begins.
16:59Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:00Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:01Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:02Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:03Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:04Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:05Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:06Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:07Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:08Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:09Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:10Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:11Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:12Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:13Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:14Oh, and that's how love begins.
17:15Oh, and that's how love begins.

18:04this book's out you're gonna go get it because you know in the past interviews and things he's
18:08talked about he's data with you know battles some chemical demons some mental demons and
18:13you know struggles with um his identity you know when he first got into the business and one of the
18:18first um major male artists to come out and say hey listen you know as a gay artist and kind of you
18:26know rock the world so hey man i said i was a vegetarian i didn't say that veterinarian
18:31so so like you you've you've you've kind of redefined yourself or not redefined but like
18:39you know magnified or amplified who you are yeah you know throughout the stages in your career is uh
18:45was it difficult was it hard or was it like kind of like a release of relief you know when you come
18:52out about addiction and things like that i tell you what man during uh during i thought i had it all
18:59figured out and then during 2020 when covid hit i uh you know the world took a tumble and i i realized
19:06that i that i really had uh had some problems you know and i think you've you're in this business
19:14sometimes you fake being well because you need to be and you know you just you keep burying things
19:20and i uh you know i just i hit a wall so hard with because i had i had so much going on there to work
19:27so hard for uh and and that meant battling you know getting over some of those demons of course
19:32but what i had not taken a look at when i was sitting there with the you know uh a 90 city
19:39tour date uh tour that would work so hard for went down the toilet a made for tv movie went down the
19:45toilet you know and those are excuses but what happened is you know it was a was a major relapse
19:51for me after you know 20 something years and and you know you have found my place separate a place
19:57i didn't want to live anymore and i've never been that far in and i mean i did well god did it i i
20:05guess i had a little bit to do with it but i was led to make a phone call and i did a four month stay
20:12in houston texas uh at j flowers institute to deal with my trauma to deal with my mental health and it was
20:19the best thing that could have ever happened because it set me free it set me free to know who i really
20:25was and what i wanted and who i wanted to be and and those things all came together you're about to
20:32read about it you know here in march and um man it is it is it was like god gave me a pair of extra
20:39wings that i could finally get off the ground why do we gotta wait till march i mean the holidays
20:45are coming up it's christmas time you know this is perfect what's the matter with you man
20:49i'm gonna wait for march for all that stuff i know all this well you know i've been here earlier

22:13know if you remember those man i you know i i i can i can uh i can still do a pretty mean two-step i
22:20said but you know um the uh the clogging days are over so let's say november 12th you got uh the
22:30kenny store you're going to be in kenny texas and then uh december you're going to be in morton
22:36soda then madison tennessee which so you're all over the place huntsville back to huntsville
22:43alabama look at you all-star 90s country so that's great that's a great lineup that's going
22:48to be a reunion every time i know all those guys tell them we said hi man you know hey listen you
22:55can tell them you've been on the gumbo yaya radio show huh i'm gonna tell them that man i'm gonna
22:59i'm gonna tell nancy jones that you're george george's wife oh man i chatted with miss nancy
23:05she was a blessing to have here she got her you know she had her book out yep yeah miss nancy is
23:12she's she is a diamond man she's she's she's an amazing lady just love her to pieces well amazing
23:18people ty herndon um you got the book you got this album with some amazing duets what about
23:27the movie what about the like you know i think ryan gosling who's gonna play you
23:34that's a good choice right there that's a good choice i don't know ryan gosling
23:38it may be he may have to play my husband he'd be a happy ending so there you go oh god you know
23:44if we get shared or play my mom it'll be perfect so that's something man so what was it like i mean
23:51you know when you you talked about you know you brought up your husband i know you were
23:56uh you i guess married twice right what was that like amongst your peers like you know i'm it's um
24:02um well this is about this is my first real marriage you know what we have in the business
24:08is called the hollywood wife you know which you'll read in the book that's that's no that's not nothing
24:12new but you know both of those ladies are still great friends of mine you know they're just they did
24:16be you know when you're trying to uh when you're trying to paint a monet it ain't nothing but a
24:21watercolor you do what you got to you know just stay in a business that you love and um that was a
24:27funny thing i just said because i was in treatment and one of the counselors said man you your paint
24:33by numbers look pretty good but they are not they're they're not gonna sell
24:38that's funny man yeah so yeah man just so it's it's a carnival ride so it's
24:44look i admire you landing landing landing in a in a in a house with you know that's made of love
24:53and you know i was sitting here the other day i was like god i got a house payment two car payments
24:58uh you know two dogs and talking about a family next year and i'm not supposed to be here but i am
25:04by the grace of god and um you know my the choices i make today are are healthy and um and and on the on
25:13the path of of where i'm supposed to be so what i say to your listeners out there is you know if you're
25:19you're struggling you're going through a hard time you know you there is hope there is you know you
25:25just have to go within and figure out right and you know you can't i think um the biggest fear people
25:32have is is not really of like the judgment the stigma i think the biggest fear people have is
25:36just like open up and asking you know um yes and i think you know what i talked to a lot of people
25:43um who have dealt with you know whether it be um you know depression anxiety you know coming out
25:52staying in you know all those things and um one of the things i find is that um music is kind of
25:59you've really been a catalyst and a cure for people whether it be performing it or or or listening to it
26:05you know yeah man i've been telling my story a long time in my music my by david ritz who wrote
26:11my ghostwriter for this book he goes i don't know if you realize this he goes but
26:15you've been screaming your story for 30 years he said uh he goes i he wrote sexual healing for marvin
26:21gaye so he's a real big you know music guy as well and he said he started referencing all these songs
26:27he goes lies i told myself i'm glad i didn't believe he goes you were screaming man i said wow david
26:34you know it's funny how we're so blind to just you're telling the truth um because it feels good
26:40good but also your your your soul is speaking so for all of you guys out there you know for all
26:47those things you got pressed down you got in locked rooms inside your heart go unlock them
26:51you know the only thing you have yep you can't fear the truth you know it's is let let my mama said
26:59let her look if you got something to say son let everybody else worry about what you got to say
27:03if it's your truth and so well you know time i listen to you and you're so like you you realize you
27:08made it you know that right i mean you know you made it man i mean you're ty herndon you like you
27:15you know it'd be impossible yes that's something what is there was there ever a moment where you're
27:21like all right this is it i'm done or like you know like i i i might say the truth would be probably
27:28no because because the music is the only thing that kept me alive it was the only truth it was the only
27:34place i could run that wasn't damaged it was it was it was the perfect room and so you know i i had
27:41that and it was putting me since you know in the womb that there was no getting away from it but it
27:48was it became my safe harbor so on the toughest of times you know when i would maybe take a year off
27:55you know i was i was still i was still writing songs you know and just it was my own little way of
28:01having having the truth so yeah so i well you could have you know yeah i could have you know
28:08what mattered most i went through i went through a time where i thought nobody wanted to hear what i
28:12had to say um but i was supposed to go through that because i needed to be stronger i needed to be
28:17louder and um and i was able to do that so wow man you know took me down a journey getting me all emotional
28:26so listen you know what i'm gonna have to go to the gym now look well we're gonna let you go in
28:33just a minute okay um but uh let me do this um i want to go ahead and play uh what mattered most
28:40that where you feature leanne rhymes on this oh yeah man she sounds like a million bucks and then uh
28:46we'll come back in a couple other things you know we're gonna go over where they can get your music
28:51where they can see you tour all that other kind of stuff and then and we'll let you go um but one
28:55more song if you don't mind oh i don't are you kidding you're doing me that's my honor man spin it
29:01all right ladies and gentlemen this is what mattered most ty herndon leanne rhymes
29:21i thought i knew the girl so well
29:27if she was sad i couldn't tell if she was sad i couldn't tell i missed the point i missed the signs
29:43so if she's gone the fault is mine i know i know
29:51a whole lot of a whole lot of little things
29:59and even though i could list them one by one she would still be gone
30:12her eyes are blue her hair was long
30:15in 64 she was born in baton rouge her favorite song was in my life
30:23i memorized her every move i knew her books for car clothes
30:30but i paid no attention to what mattered most
30:40i never asked i never asked i never asked she never said she never said
30:48and when she cried i turned my head
30:56and when she cried i turned my head
30:58she dreamed of dreams
31:00she dreamed of dreams
31:02behind closed doors
31:04behind closed doors
31:06that made them easy to ignore
31:10oh i know
31:12i missed the forest for the trees
31:18all i had to show
31:22oh
31:24when she walked out the door
31:26the colfax and nothing more
31:30her eyes are blue her hair was long
31:35her hair was long in 64
31:37she was born in baton rouge
31:41her favorite song was in my life
31:43i memorized her every move
31:47i knew her books were car clothes
31:51but i paid no attention to what mattered most
32:03her eyes are blue her hair was long in 64
32:08she was born in baton rouge
32:11her father's tall her mother's gone
32:14she moved out west when she was two
32:18the way she laughed
32:20the way she loved
32:22oh my god
32:24what did i do
32:30what did i do
32:32oh
32:34what did i do
32:36let it go
32:38she mattered the most
32:40she mattered
32:42oh
32:44what did i do
32:46all right ladies and gentlemen we're back we got ty herndan here on the phone with us
33:03thank you so much ty for hanging out and and chatting with us
33:06y'all missed the best part of it y'all missed the best part of it because yeah we just kept on chatting
33:12look you know um
33:14this this music is all great music the album is
33:18how about leon rhymes isn't that wasn't that amazing y'all that's she's something else
33:22oh yeah all right so you know have
33:24ladies and gentlemen this is the ty herndan show
33:26where ty is going to be chatting with you at all his favorite people in the world
33:29nothing about himself
33:30no it's uh
33:32and then you know that i think that's one of the things i think that's why because a lot of people talk
33:36about you know ty herndan and you see the interviews and you go back and follow and i am a fan
33:41um
33:43it's genuine
33:45oh genuine he's real like you know
33:47um and i think that that's pretty cool you know
33:49like is it
33:51what wouldn't you have done what what like what what
33:53what would you have done different do you think
33:55anything
33:57oh
33:59well you know if i did anything different it wouldn't be my story but i i
34:01you know it's as hard as some things were
34:03but um you know i think
34:05if if anything
34:07i would have i would have discovered recovery earlier you know just
34:11really sought the answers to to mental health but
34:14you know my dad went to heaven not dealing with his mental health and i was able to
34:17you know through through um
34:21working with a counselor and someone sitting in for his place i was also able to heal generations of the same demons you know and
34:27and just
34:29and set and set him free
34:31you know just because someone has passed on doesn't mean that
34:33you can't free their memory
34:35and so that's some great work
34:37and you you you uh
34:39like you know i'm going to be a probably
34:41an
34:43older dad
34:45we're talking about that but i won't carry that
34:47generational thing
34:49into my children
34:51it's gone
34:53you know and so just the beautiful work that you can do
34:55around that
34:57and that's all just centered around truth
34:59and
35:01you can't change anybody's journey
35:03but what you can change is where you are in the present
35:05with the things that you know about your past
35:07so
35:09you know i don't know when i became oprah but i did
35:11there's a message in in in his book get the book go see it
35:15i mean go get the book it comes out march 31st get the music
35:19it you know i mean he's got like four he's released 14 albums
35:23and you know it's a 30 year career
35:25and this latest
35:27is got the best of the best i mean he basically is taking something wonderful
35:33and adding another layer to it it's
35:35it's like the whipped cream
35:37well said man
35:39i love that well said
35:41especially with the lineup the artists
35:43um you can get his tour date
35:45there you can see uh
35:47music all that good stuff
35:49um and ty
35:51i'm serious man if you make it to new
35:53york when you're up here you got my number
35:55now holla at me i'd love to
35:57hang out with you and you know
35:59just uh you know reintroduce
36:01ourselves um
36:03and i just there's a lot of special
36:05special people in your life there's a lot of people
36:07and you shared this with me in the past that
36:09behind the scenes who make a difference
36:11for you and we're gonna let you go
36:13but is there any shout out you know the band
36:15who's you know who you want to recognize
36:17let's mind our manners
36:19and you know proper like and
36:21you know um
36:23i think uh number number one
36:25i'm gonna say i'm just gonna sound like the cma's but
36:27you know god and the fans we wouldn't be
36:29we wouldn't be here without that
36:31you know it just that's the one thing the
36:33country music recognizes
36:35is the people that put you there
36:37you know so i
36:39that was my motivation to this book
36:41to really honor
36:43you know
36:45so many people
36:47that have sacrificed
36:49for me to have this life
36:51and you know and i i uh
36:53i am constantly paying it forward
36:55and that's you ask me why i talk about other artists
36:57because it's just it's what i do
36:59you know you just you got to pay your life forward
37:01with what you know
37:03and so and that starts you from football
37:05entertainment tonight to right here on the gumbo
37:07you know all right man so let me ask you this
37:09opryland stage
37:11or the rhyming which was scarier for you
37:13the rhyming
37:17i just did the opry last sunday
37:19my knees still shake
37:21you said you're standing where patsy
37:23cline stood
37:25i know but you know listen if you
37:27hey was dean dylan part of somebody
37:29said that dean dylan was a part of that
37:31lineup or the tennessee river boys
37:33or is that true
37:35no he was he was
37:37he was uh he was just
37:39becoming into you know george
37:41just discovering dean dylan at that time and
37:43you know did he was he playing at opry land
37:45because i somebody did yeah
37:47all right okay all right so
37:49first dean dylan shelley wright you know
37:51there's so so christian chenna was so
37:53many uh you know all the boys in diamond rio
37:55so many careers were
37:57launched at that that place
37:59that's something and uh
38:01do you remember do you remember the first
38:03time you played opry
38:05what you sang what was it
38:07i do i just referenced it last sunday
38:09because it was my it was my 40th year
38:11and when roy acuff brought me on stage
38:13at 19 years old
38:15uh to just 40 plus 19
38:17yeah
38:19105 that's how old i am
38:21yes
38:23he's 11-3
38:2511-3 and i um first time on the opry i
38:27did uh how great the art and i did
38:29uh jack green's there goes my
38:31everything which was my dad's
38:33favorite song and the whole opry stood up
38:35saying happy birthday it was my
38:37grandmother's 60th birthday
38:39and i have it on uh
38:41on the cassette tape that's going
38:43on the audio book you hear the whole
38:45thing so it's it's just
38:47it's just stupid crazy
38:49you know what stupid crazy is i'm
38:51talking to ty herndon
38:53this guy i mean like 17
38:55top 10 singles
38:57three number one billboard

39:09how much time did you sell
39:11six million six million records
39:13out there it's hard to do that today
39:15oh that's something man
39:17and uh i mean going back to 95
39:19what matters
39:21yeah man and i still live in a trailer park
39:23so it's pretty cool
39:25that is great man
39:27i'm kidding my grandfather said when you build a house son
39:29which i did he said you go buy
39:31you a pair of hot wheels and you bury it under the corner
39:33of that house and it will tell you you
39:35came from the trailer park and don't you ever forget
39:37it
39:39that's funny yeah you know that's what they
39:41say about uh tornadoes
39:43in alabama
39:45hey man ours are ours
39:47that's like what is it a
39:49divorce or in tornado in alabama

41:58His heart is telling him to hang on for dear life
42:07Cause deep down he knows she's letting go for good this time
42:14There's a daddy walking his daughter down the aisle
42:22Fighting back tears and forcing a smile
42:28Over 22 years he's watched her grow
42:34A man holding on to a woman letting go
42:41In the Hill Valley home there's a feeble old man
43:04And he's holding on to a feeble old head
43:11And the angels are coming to carry her home
43:17A man holding on to a woman letting go
43:24His heart is telling him to hang on for dear life
43:34Cause deep down he knows she's letting go for good this time

45:05Ty Herndon
45:07Michael Ray
45:08At the local diner
45:23Just outside of town
45:28He comes in an hour early
45:34Just to beat the morning crowd
45:39He stares out the window
45:45And stirs his coffee cup
45:50Another day, another dollar
45:55Short of catching up
46:04Same old job, same old old routine
46:08But in his heart he knows what it brings
46:13A two bedroom house
46:15For his family of three
46:18He's given his all
46:21Making ends meet
46:24A second hand car
46:26A washing machine
46:29They may not have much
46:32But he gets what they need
46:34With the hands of a working man
46:38Down at the factory
46:44Standing in line
46:49He waits to punch the time clock
46:55A million worries on his mind
47:00Oh, Jimmy's been braces
47:05And Betty's in time
47:10And the problems that he's facing
47:16They're all building up inside
47:19They're all building up inside
47:23Same old job, same old old routine
47:28But in his heart he knows what it brings
47:33A two bedroom house
47:35For his family of three
47:37He's given his all
47:39Making ends meet
