00:00Hello, who that?
00:02Yes, sir, this is Chris Malpass with the Malpass Brothers.
00:05No, it ain't.
00:06I'm afraid it is, man.
00:07Man, let me tell you something.
00:09This ain't no Chris Malpass.
00:11This ain't that phone number ending in 7380 that I got in October 2023
00:16about joining me on the Gumbo Ya Ya radio show.
00:20So I know this ain't no way this is Chris Malpass.
00:23I'm afraid it is, man.
00:25Man, thank you.
00:26You know I ain't never had a bad day.
00:28Come on.
00:28Hopefully you remember me.
00:30I'm trying to think of where we met at.
00:34We met at that awards show in October.
00:39The Josie's?
00:40At Josie's Awards.
00:42Yes, I do remember that, man.
00:43Yeah, we were hanging out, and I think y'all were taping a show with the Troubadour.
00:48Is it the Troubadour?
00:49That's exactly.
00:49Yeah, we sure were.
00:50We did the Troubadour.
00:51That was your inaugural thing, yeah.
00:53So we were hanging out there, and you gave me a CD.
00:57Wow.
00:58With your phone number and said, come on, call me.
01:01Wow, man.
01:03You got yourself all busy and popular.
01:05You got yourself all famous now.
01:07Shoot, I ain't famous.
01:08I'm busy, but I ain't famous.
01:11Come on, man.
01:11That's what I tell you.
01:12I'm famous, just nobody knows it yet.
01:14That's all.
01:15That's right, buddy.
01:16So, man, thank you so much for joining me, man.
01:19Hey, man, I'm glad to do it, buddy.
01:21So, ladies and gentlemen, this is the Gumbo Ya Ya Radio Show.
01:24We're talking with Chris Malpass of the Malpass Brothers, Chris and Taylor.
01:28And, you know, it's the beauty and the brains, these two.
01:33So you got to clear something up for me, because when I met y'all, I couldn't tell between the two, the beauty and the brain.
01:39So hopefully this conversation will answer that question.
01:42Oh, my gosh, yeah.
01:44That's a hard one there.
01:46Which one's which?
01:48So.
01:48I don't know.
01:49Yeah, Taylor thinks he's both.
01:52So I don't know what I am.
01:53I'm just a side guy.
01:54I don't know.
01:55I don't know where to start with you, because there's so much.
01:57First of all, you have done to country music what's needed to be done for decades.
02:02Thank you for that.
02:04Well, you're very kind.
02:05Your show's entertaining and fun.
02:09You got your radio show.
02:11Now, ladies and gentlemen, y'all got to check out the Malpass Brothers show on RFD-TV.
02:19Well, thank you.
02:19When you ain't listening to the Gumbo Ya-Ya radio show.
02:22Exactly.
02:23You're right.
02:23You got to give time to everybody.
02:25So where do we start, Brother Chris?
02:27How about this?
02:27How about we start about you and Taylor, how y'all got started doing this whole thing?
02:32Well, my dad's dad ran a little country store, a little bar, really.
02:38And he played music just around there.
02:41And my mom's dad was a preacher and played.
02:43So we kind of had music influence from both sides.
02:47And we grew up staying with our grandparents a lot.
02:50And, you know, I fell in love with the traditional country.
02:55And Taylor did, you know, Kitty Wells, Stonewall Jackson, Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride.
03:01You know, that was very important to us as kids because we fell in love with that music immediately as soon as we heard it.
03:11So we traveled around from churches to churches and fairs and theaters and wherever we could play.
03:19You know, as kids, my mom did the booking for us.
03:22She'd answer the phone.
03:23If somebody called, we'd come.
03:24And it kind of grew to that, to working with Don Helms for a couple of years, who played with Hank Senior.
03:30And then that transitioned into working with Merle Haggard for seven years.
03:36And then after that, RFD TV picked us up.
03:40And it's just been we tour very heavily, which we love.
03:44But there's not a lot of outlets for traditional country music, you know.
03:48So TV has been a great one for traditional country because of Larry's Diner and things like that.
03:57You know, a lot of artists you haven't seen in years you see on there.
03:59Oh, yeah.
04:00You know, and you talk about touring.
04:01I was just looking at your tour date.
04:05And so, I mean, like November, you're in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Wake Forest, back up to Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
04:12I think taking some time off maybe for the holidays, I only see one thing booked for December in Kentucky.
04:20Yeah.
04:20And then the whole month of January, you're basically in Florida on a cruise ship, man.
04:25Yeah, we're doing a cruise and taping again in January in Texas.
04:30And we try to take December off just to kind of unwind, you know.
04:35But it's been our touring schedule is very busy, which we're proud of, you know.
04:40Yeah, so I don't see New York, but it only goes to February.
04:44So I'm just guessing you're coming to New York sometime after February.
04:47I hope we get it.
04:48I'll send you a list of venues, man.
04:50You come on up here.
04:51I'll feed you, but I can't pay you.
04:54Hey, man, that's the way it goes for a country music artist, ain't it?
04:58I reckon, you know.
04:59You come up here, break a room, you'll be back.
05:01But I hope you like Cajun cooking.
05:03That's all I do.
05:04Man, I do.
05:05I love Cajun cooking.
05:07We've played Lafayette, Louisiana, and Eunice, and a lot of towns in Louisiana.
05:13So I love Cajun cooking.
05:15Well, we're fans of yours.
05:17I got to pick a song.
05:18I just need to figure out, like, what's the one that best represents, you think,
05:23the Mount Pass brothers?
05:24You know, I believe off of that record, Out of Side, Out of Mind is one that we wrote.
05:32It's really country.
05:34Man, that's a hard one.
05:35Longley Street's a good one, too, though.
05:37That's one the Lubin brothers did.
05:40It'd be hard for me to pick, man.
05:42All right.
05:42Maybe once in a lifetime, you may find that perfect love, the kind that lives forever.
06:02Love is a lonely street for those who go astray.
06:30It's made with broken hearts, that someone threw away.
06:39They'll walk with memories, the bitter and the sweet.
06:47Sorrows their destiny, love is a lonely street.
06:53There are times you shouldn't dare to grant your heart its wish.
07:18For heartaches come so easy when you're hungry for a kid.
07:27And you can't see the dangers of sweet arms that hold you tight.
07:34Love is a lonely street for those who go astray.
07:50It's made with broken hearts, it's made with broken hearts, that someone threw away.
07:59They'll walk with memories, the bitter and the sweet.
08:07Sorrows their destiny, love is a lonely street.
08:14You put me out of sight and out of mind.
08:44Sorrows their destiny, love is a lonely street.
08:46We used to walk together hand in hand.
08:51We used to walk together hand in hand.
08:55We always talked about our future plans.
09:01But someone turned your head and pulled your eyes.
09:09Now you've got me out of sight and out of mind.
09:17Out of sight, I can't see your face at all.
09:26Out of mind, I'm climbing up the wall.
09:33All alone, all alone, all alone.
09:37I cry my brown eyes wide.
09:42Since you put me out of sight and out of mind.
09:49From where you stand, you can't see why I'm blue.
10:08From where you stand, you can't see why I'm blue.
10:15With you not here, I still can't face the truth.
10:23You've moved on and left me far behind.
10:30You put me out of sight and out of mind.
10:38Out of sight, I can't see your face at all.
10:48Out of mind, I'm climbing up the wall.
10:55All alone, I cry my brown eyes wide.
11:05Since you put me out of sight and out of mind.
11:12Since you put me out of sight and out of mind.
11:25I got to tell you, we started doing our show in 2013.
11:34And the past few years, we've been very fortunate to have run into y'all and a few other people.
11:40And I'm looking at your lineup.
11:42And I'm guessing you've been following my show a little bit here.
11:46Because you've got Lacey J. Dalton, who I love, who's been on the show.
11:49You've got T. Graham Bowne who's been on our show.
11:51David Frizzell who's been on our show.
11:53We've been begging Taylor Lynn and Dale Watson to get up on here.
11:58Well, I'll put in a good word for you.
12:00T.G. Shepard.
12:02Yeah, man.
12:03Mo Bandy.
12:04All my favorites, man.
12:05All my favorites.
12:07You know, and they're all, every one of them is great people too.
12:11Oh, yeah.
12:12I hadn't worked with a single artist.
12:14You know, you hear all these horror stories when you work with rock and roll and all that.
12:18But country artists, man, are generally really good just country people.
12:23And every one of them has been great to work with.
12:26Mo Bandy's the nicest guy in the world.
12:28Man, I love him.
12:29I'm a Mo Bandy fan from way back.
12:32Bandy the Rodeo Clown and Hey Mo, Hey Joe.
12:35You know, all of it.
12:37He's the nicest guy you'll ever work with, man.
12:40He's such a good guy.
12:41So this is what I, um, see again, man, there's so much to get into.
12:46Um, let's talk about, you know, you got some, is it your birthday?
12:52Am I all about it?
12:53Tomorrow's my birthday.
12:54Yes, sir, buddy.
12:55Man.
12:56Happy birthday to you.
12:58Thank you, man.
12:59I appreciate that.
13:00Happy birthday.
13:01See, I am a Malpass Brothers fan.
13:04You know what I mean?
13:05I am a fan.
13:06Come on, man.
13:07Well, thank you, buddy.
13:09So let's start with this.
13:10Let's start with your music.
13:12Okay?
13:13And then we'll get into the radio show because, um, I love your music.
13:18Again, you know, if you're a fan of music from the sixties, the forties, the fifties,
13:22the eighties, y'all do it all.
13:24And you do it with that, um, tongue in cheek kind of Statler Brothers humor, you know?
13:30Um, with a little bit of like that, just, uh, you got some Tom T. Hall story telling
13:37vibes behind you.
13:38You got Merle Haggard, you know, heartbreak prisons.
13:41Like you do it all, man.
13:43Well, man, you're very kind.
13:45I'm, I'm, I guess, you know, I'm such a fan when I walk on stage.
13:49Uh, uh, my, my goal is to, to bring back these songs and, and I'm like excited to introduce
13:56them to the audience.
13:57You know, I'm like, Hey, remember this one?
13:59You remember this?
14:00Cause these songs are so good.
14:01And these artists are so good.
14:02You know, their, their, their music doesn't need to be forgotten.
14:05And somebody has got to do that.
14:07And, you know, we write songs too.
14:09And I love doing my own music, but I sure love doing those songs by those people that
14:13I, I, I idolize so much.
14:16Well, I think that's the best way to describe your, your show is it's a, it's a show.
14:20It's an experience.
14:21It's a performance.
14:22It's not, it's not a concert y'all.
14:24It's not a gig.
14:25If you go and you see them live and you go and see them an hour later or a day later,
14:31it's totally different.
14:32Everyone is every, every performance is an experience.
14:37And the interaction you have with the audience and with your guests is just absolutely wonderful.
14:42Well, thank you for saying that.
14:44That, that means a lot.
14:45That's the most important is we want to make sure that everybody's had a good time.
14:49You know, you can't please everybody, but we work twice as hard to try to please the
14:53ones.
14:54You can't.
14:55You can't make everybody happy.
14:56Right.
14:57Right.
14:58Right.
14:59Just, just, just your, just your own little room.
15:01Just, you know, as long as you're making your room happy, you ain't got to make the
15:05world happy.
15:06Just clean up your little corner.
15:08So I think is, is a Lonely Street, the latest, your latest project?
15:12It is.
15:13It's our latest project.
15:14We've got a, a brand new album we just did with Gaither music.
15:18It's a gospel project.
15:19Really?
15:20And a lot of, a lot of them are, are artists, you know, that like a, there's a family Bible
15:26that Willie Nelson wrote on there.
15:28And, uh, there's a lot of, of songs that we learned from country artists growing up back
15:34when country artists did country and gospel records, you know, so it's a very traditional
15:39gospel record.
15:40Really?
15:41It's coming out.
15:42Yes, sir.
15:43The Gaithers are legendary.
15:44Legendary.
15:45Oh yeah, man.
15:46Steven's out there with ain't Southern.
15:48Let me explain you something.
15:49All right.
15:50I'm going to learn y'all some music.
15:51You learn to sing in the church, in the pew, behind the pulpit, in the choir.
15:57And then you go from there.
15:59That's, you know, your first.
16:00That's the deal.
16:01That's it.
16:02You got the Stadler Brothers gospel album, Oak Ridge Boys, maybe the, you know, hymns.
16:06And then, then, then you get into a little bit of Johnny Cash.
16:10So you go from, uh, from a pulpit to the pew to the bar stool.
16:17And that's the, that's the graduating order right there.
16:19That's, that's exactly right.
16:21And you know, every artist back then, you know, even Elvis all had that church influence,
16:26you know.
16:27What's on the album?
16:28What's on the album?
16:29You got Why Me Little?
16:30You got any Chris Christopherson in there?
16:32We've got, um, like I said, I know we got Family Bible by Willie Nelson.
16:36Of course, we got some of the stuff like, um, Because He Lives, you know, the standard gospel.
16:41We got a lot of Leuven Brothers gospel on there.
16:44If you remember the Leuven Brothers, we're big fans of Leuvens.
16:48We got Merle Haggard gospel on there, Jesus Take a Hold.
16:51Um, man, there's so many.
16:54I'm over here, so, see now, damn it, I'm mad at you now.
16:58Cause I'm looking here at the merch.
17:00And I ain't seeing it.
17:01Yeah, it's not, it won't be available till early next year.
17:05Oh, okay, that's great.
17:06But I promise you, if you'll keep in contact with me, I'll get you a copy.
17:09Oh, man.
17:11Uh, that'd be awesome.
17:13That'd be a great Christmas present.
17:14Happy birthday to you again, by the way.
17:16I'm gonna have to...
17:17Well, thank you, buddy.
17:18I got a copy of, um, I got a copy of, uh, of Memory That Bad I can send you if you want.
17:26For your birthday.
17:27Oh, wow, man.
17:28That, that, yeah, that's just what I've always wanted about this present.
17:33Oh, man, this is, this is great.
17:35So, the latest is Lonely Street.
17:38Um, there's nothing on there you can't listen to more than once.
17:42Well, thank you, buddy.
17:43And look, hey, ladies and gentlemen.
17:45If you don't like the Mountain Pass Brothers, you don't like music.
17:49That's just, that's...
17:50Oh, you're kind.
17:51That's just a fact.
17:52That's just a fact.
17:53You know?
17:54You're very kind.
17:55No, man, I'm a fan.
17:56Um, let me do this.
17:57I was gonna play some music, but we just, let's just chat, man.
18:00Let's talk.
18:01Let's talk a little bit.
18:02And I'll, then you'll let me know a couple songs to drop in.
18:05But the big thing I really want to talk about is this TV show that you're doing.
18:08It is, I mean, it's, it's kind of like hee-haw meets the Grand Ole Opry.
18:14It's fun.
18:15Yeah.
18:16It's entertaining.
18:17You got some great guests.
18:18When are you taping?
18:19When's it start airing?
18:20Give us everything, Malpest.
18:22So, we're gonna be taping November 11th, 12th and 13th.
18:26We do two shows a day, and then we'll be taping again, uh, middle of January, uh, three, two shows a day.
18:35And I'm guessing it'll come out maybe April, maybe, May, somewhere in there.
18:41You know, it depends on how they work their timing with everything.
18:45But we've got a lot of great guests.
18:47You know, Lacey Jay's gonna be on.
18:49Dale Watson.
18:50Taylor Lynn.
18:52Um, Jason James, who's a young guy that does traditional country.
18:56Uh, David Frizzell.
18:58So, it's gonna be another, you know, be packed full of traditional country.
19:02Yeah, he's doing his, like, what, like 40th or 50th anniversary of, uh.
19:06I believe so, yes.
19:07Of, uh, of, um, you're the reason guy I made.
19:10Oklahoma.
19:11That's crazy that it's been that long.
19:13I know, man.
19:14That's one of the greatest, to me, that's one of the greatest songs.
19:16Now, my Yankee bride don't get it.
19:18And I don't know.
19:19Oh, man.
19:20I don't know, like, how could you not like that song?
19:23I mean, how many songs talk about a calico cat?
19:25Come on.
19:26I know, for real.
19:27Yeah, Anna.
19:28Yeah.
19:29That's the truth.
19:30Hey, you got, uh, Jenny, uh, Flina on your show?
19:32Yes.
19:33In fact, she's the whole band.
19:35She's, it's, it's our band and Janae's playing fiddle.
19:39And we're actually showcasing her for an episode as well.
19:42Man, I, I'm, jeez, I'm already, look at you, man.
19:45You're already aggravating me some more now.
19:48How do you, how do you get these?
19:50See, I know, um, the ladies come on the show cause Handsome Jack lines up our interviews,
19:55but, uh, man, I tell you, these are an incredible lineup of artists you have here.
20:00This is like the who's who of country music.
20:02You got country music legends.
20:03You got like current relevant people and yourselves on here.
20:06This is, this is just ridiculous programming that you're putting out.
20:10Well, thank you, buddy.
20:11We're trying to, we're trying to, you know, a lot of these artists, some of them you don't
20:15get to hear on the radio, you know, modern radio and some of them don't get a lot of,
20:20and we're trying to say, Hey, these people are still out working and sounding great.
20:24And so we're, we're wanting to bring them, uh, you know, so people can see that they're
20:29still out there working, you know, and, and sounding great.
20:32And that's one of the things we wanted to do with the TV show.
20:35Well, let's learn people, how they can see you, where, where they can see you.
20:38How do they be a part of this experience?
20:40So you can, if you go to our website, all our tour dates are on there as well.
20:45If you get our Facebook or our website, you can find out how to buy tickets.
20:49You can actually buy tickets to the tape and, uh, you can buy one ticket for one day or
20:54you can buy a ticket.
20:55It covers all three days and you, you're right there in the tape and the whole time
21:00there's a live audience.
21:01And, uh, now this is Texas you're recording now, right?
21:04Right.
21:05Yes, sir.
21:06Right in Fort Worth at the stockyards there.
21:08Oh, right across.
21:09I mean, it's a cool place.
21:11You record that is, that place is amazing.
21:13I think they just had, um, who is it?
21:15Uh, I got a couple of young ladies that have been on our program.
21:19A couple of artists have been on, they are, they're doing, they're on the road now.
21:22And I think, uh, Keith Urban and they just, they just did an episode of the road there
21:26at the stockyard.
21:27I'm telling you, man, that is a, it's a cool, cool place.
21:30John Wayne museum's beside it.
21:32They still walk the long horn cattle down the street at four o'clock.
21:36I mean, it's a, you, you come for the TV show, but you can walk to everything that
21:41night and restaurants.
21:42It's, it's the spot to be, man.
21:44That's the mouth, the mouth pass brothers show.
21:47And it's going to be on RFD TV season number three taping right now.
21:54You can go to, uh, mouth pass brothers.com.
21:57Let's see.
21:58Make sure I got it right.
21:59You can go to RFD TV.com.
22:01Get info there.
