00:00On September 3rd, 2023, Alliance Police in Ohio responded to a frantic 911 call.
00:0559-year-old George Appleby had cut his girlfriend's throat and was dragging her back inside with a knife still at her neck.
00:11Officers arrived to the developing hostage situation, where they'd be forced to make a split-second decision.

05:41She's got a laceration to her neck.
05:43We have shots fired inside and one down.

05:54Okay.
05:54I don't want you to go in there.
05:55Oh, honey.
05:56You're going to the hospital.

05:59You're going.
05:59Come on, man.
06:00We got to get you down the steps.
06:01I'm sorry.
06:01I'm not trying to rush you, but I'm trying to rush you.
06:10That's going to be a nurse, yeah.
06:11Oh, I just ate that hot ass, so I'm running.
06:15Here.
06:16You're good.
06:17You're good.
06:17You're good.
06:26Wrong stuff to eat when you got to run.

06:40I just want to get rid of those hotheads out of my gut.
06:42Yep.
06:45Have him secure his weapon, and he stays with you now.
06:55The two of you stay together.
06:56Hey, shut everything off, and he stays with you.
06:58The two of you stay together, secure your weapon.
07:01Gotcha.
07:01Yeah.
07:09Yeah.
07:11Need help?
07:12Uh-uh.
07:12Yeah, it was just, I'm telling you, it was just, because I was like, what the hell?
07:15Oh, and just, it's still hanging on my desk.
07:18One of them things, I didn't, I don't have my, you know, I don't wear my thing, and I'm like,
07:21what?
07:22All right, Rob saved her life, man.
07:24Oh, yeah.
07:24I mean, the knife's literally right there, man.
07:26He had it in her throat.
07:27Yeah.
07:27When I come around, I'm like, oh, my God.
07:29Yeah, we got a shell here in the tub.
07:30Just secure the scene.
07:32Yeah, absolutely nobody.
07:33There's one right here.
07:34All right, that's good.
07:35Then that's a two.
07:35I can't see where the, no, that's a screw.
07:38And then down there's like a plug.
07:40Yeah, well, I was going to do CPR, and I'm like, wow.
07:43Hey, we just shot and killed a civilian.
07:44Towson just whacked me with an M4.
07:47Guy had a knife to a girl's throat, had him barricaded.
07:49They were barricaded in the back bedroom.
07:51People were screaming.
07:52She already had her knife, her throat cut by the knife by this guy.
07:54George is his name.
07:56When we get here, they're going, he says he's dragging her back inside.
07:58Go back into a back bedroom.
07:59I ran the door open.
08:01Well, pry barred open.
08:02He's standing with a knife to her throat.
08:03Rob turns the corner.
08:04Next thing you know, pow, pow, he's gone.
08:06I got two in the room.
08:08I put Rob in a car with Lee Rose and told him to shut everything off and just sit there.
08:12Everything's shut off.
08:13Your gun's secured in that car.
08:15You guys just have a seat in the front seat of your car.
08:17And the two of you stay there together.
08:19We're not talking about nothing.
08:21You handle it?
08:21You all right?
08:22Yeah, I'm good.
08:23I know.
08:24I know.
08:25Just briefly give me what you saw.
08:27Struggle over the knife.
08:28He had a knife to her neck.
08:29Had her as a hostage.
08:31If I didn't take action, he's going to cut his throat again.
08:33You already cut her once?
08:34Yeah.
08:34Okay.
08:35I'm good with that.
08:36You want me to do it, yeah?
08:37Well, no, no.
08:37I think you did fantastic.
08:40Obviously, we all did the right thing here because we all get to go home.
08:43I just talked to Hillis on the phone, him and the chief are aware, so is X.
08:46If you have an issue, call me on the radio.
08:48All right.
08:49You guys good?
08:50Yeah, we're good.
08:50Sure.
08:51Yep.
08:51Anything?
08:51Water?
08:52No, yeah, water if you got one.
08:54That's why I'm just throwing up the tub.
08:55You want one, too?
08:56Yeah, I'll take one.
08:56All right.
08:56Yeah, two waters if you don't mind.
08:58It might be piss warm, but it's water.
08:59Hey, just something.
09:00Just watch yourself because we got around here.
09:03How old is he?
09:03Yeah, he can't touch anything.
09:05Don't even go in the room, dude.
09:06Yeah.
09:07Yeah, that's a homicide, so.
09:08I mean, unless you absolutely need some medical attention.
09:11I have to call it in, though.
09:11Okay.
09:12Can you tell me where those bullet holes are in his head?
09:14They aimed right at his head.
09:15He had the knife around the throat, so I can't tell you.
09:17If you've got to go in there for medical reasons, you've got to water, share water.
09:21They're going to grab some.
09:22You guys all good?
09:23Except me and everybody.
09:24Yeah, no, I just, that's the thing.
09:25I'm eating the hotheads, and I'm like, oh, my God.
09:28And so by running up here, I'm throwing up hotheads.
09:30I'll be here.
09:30Anybody know of age?
09:31What do you guys think?
09:32Do not.
09:33What do you think?
09:3360s?
09:35Maybe, yeah.
09:36Yeah.
09:36It's got gray hair that's left.
09:39All right.
09:39Yeah, that just keeps, and of all days, I had them put extra hot peppers on it.
09:45We just need to know everybody that goes in and out.
09:48You go ahead and go.
09:49I'll take you.
09:49You sure?
09:50Yeah, I'm sure.
09:51Okay, we're going to transport her up to a line.
09:52They look pretty superficial, so.
09:54Yeah.
09:55And they brought some waters up to the guys that are upstairs.
09:57They all said they were good.
09:58Yeah, appreciate you.
10:06What's his last name, George?
10:07Appleby.
10:08Appleby.
10:09He's been going by a joke.
10:11Did you see him cut her throat or anything?
10:13Yeah, I did.
10:13I was standing right there at the door when he did it.
10:16So they were in the house when it happened?
10:18Yeah.
10:18And what happened?
10:19What was going on?
10:20Were they arguing all day or what?
10:22Not that I know of.
10:23I mean, we were right here.
10:24I'm working on my bike.
10:25He opened the screen door, and he told her to get the f*** out.
10:30And then he grabbed her in the headlock and slid her throat right in front of me at the door.
10:36Who called you?
10:37No.
10:37She called.
10:39Who called?
10:40I called.
10:40You called?
10:41All right.
10:42So then you saw that.
10:43He said, you tell him, go back downstairs, and I'm going to kill you.
10:47He hit her with the bingo back before.
10:50He been.
10:50So what happened just today?
10:52I was upstairs looking out the window, and we kept hearing a lot of bumping him.
10:55We're like, oh, that's him with her, you know?
10:57So all of a sudden, the door busted open, and he came.
11:00He had a round in the chokehold and had a big-ass knife.
11:02What's your name?
11:03I know you, but what's your name?
11:04Carla.
11:05Carla.
11:05My brain's going 100 miles an hour here.
11:07I'm trying to make sure.
11:07He's not even allowed here.
11:09George?
11:09Or his sister won't let her in here.
11:12Let her or him?
11:13Him.
11:14Him.
11:14This is her house.
11:15He wasn't allowed here because a couple weeks ago, he hit her with a baseball bat and
11:19black from the whole side of the house.
11:20What's your name?
11:21Teddy.
11:21So all you guys live here?
11:22Yeah.
11:23You staying here too, Whitey?
11:24No.
11:25No?
11:25Where are you staying?
11:26I'm staying in the tent.
11:27Are you up behind Salvation Army?
11:29Yeah.
11:29Okay, okay.
11:30It looks like there's only one entrance, so I'm going to put you at the bottom of the steps.
11:34Nobody comes or goes now.
11:35Yep.
11:36If you and Tolman want to switch, that's fine.
11:39Towson and Rose are in Rose's car.
11:41He said he's okay.
11:42He's all right.
11:43He said he's all right.
11:44Do you need anything?
11:45No.
11:46Do you need us to check him out or anything?
11:47Do you want us to at least talk to him?
11:49Just ask him if he's okay.
11:51In Rose's car.
11:52Yeah, he's in Rose's.
11:53I know he's squared away, so just ask him.
11:54Just to make, you know, thank you.
11:58Tolman.
11:59Yeah.
12:00Dude, I'm blowing chucks.
12:02I feel like I'm going to pass out.
12:02You're okay.
12:03The toilets, I mean, the tub's just full of f***.
12:06Just give me some air for a second.
12:07I'll be right back.
12:07All right, buddy.
12:08Everybody's okay.
12:09Step in here and take your vest off and sit down.
12:12I threw up all over where I can't.
12:13Take your vest off.
12:16Did they break down the window, though?
12:17I don't know.
12:18I didn't know where anybody was.
12:19I showed up at the Halligan, and they said up here.
12:21Well, I was handling that accident.
12:22How did this all come in?
12:23Did it come in through 911?
12:24I was eating.
12:25I heard something about 911.
12:27You know, and I'm like, what the hell?
12:28So I'm eating, and I hear that there's a knife.
12:30You know, a knife in somebody's throat or something.
12:31So I'm like, f***.
12:32Oh, you see my s*** sitting on the desk.
12:34I just, obviously, you know what you need to do.
12:36And so they said, we need a Halligan, where I saw I'm pulling up.
12:38I knew there was one in there, so I pulled up where you need me.
12:40He said, I'm coming out.
12:41They said, okay, come out.
12:42He wasn't coming out, so they told me to start hitting the door, and I was just beating the s*** out of the door, waiting for a shot to come through the door, because I didn't know.
12:49So Nick said, do you want me to try?
12:50So he's doing the same thing.
12:51I'm like, bam, and trying to bust that lock.
12:52I bust a lockout, but it must have been locked somewhere else or stuck or something.
12:55Yeah, there was just a slide lock.
12:57Okay, that's what it is.
13:00So, uh...
13:05The suspect, 59-year-old George Appleby, was pronounced dead at the scene.
13:10Investigators noted Appleby was known to police for decades of violent incidents.
13:13His girlfriend, 68-year-old Anita, survived the attack and was treated for cuts and stitches to her neck.
13:19Despite the trauma, she would ultimately go on to recover.
13:21At some point in my career, I stopped counting arrests and started counting close calls, the ones where I walked out thinking, I shouldn't still be here.
13:27I've answered calls that looked calm on the surface, then found out later, they turned into full-blown hostage situations after I left.
13:33And that realization does scare you, because it reminds you how fast a house, a hallway, or a locked door can turn into a place where you might have to take a life or lose yours.
13:39That's the headspace officer stepped into on this call.
13:42There was no warning, no buildup, just a victim in danger with no room for hesitation.
13:45And walking towards a door when you know violence is already in motion is courageous, but it's also discipline.
13:49And in those scary moments, your brain strips everything down to threat and protection, because you're measuring danger you can't fully see and committing to a path you can't turn back from.
13:56And these officers had to move, not because they were fearless, but because the victim inside was running out of time.
14:00And when you're the only barrier between a victim and a knife that's already drew blood, the weight of every choice hits even harder.
14:05Once you know the suspect has already crossed the line into deadly force, you stop thinking about negotiation, and you start thinking about survival.
14:10And that's for the victim, not the officers, because most officers have made peace with those decisions.
14:13Some people will replay this shooting with the comfort of hindsight, maybe asking why he shot when the suspect only had a knife.
14:18That's because you don't negotiate with a threat that's already shown violence, you have to eliminate it.
14:22Now what stayed with me in this clip wasn't the shot, but the moment after, because I realized how close the victim came to losing her life.
14:27And victory doesn't always feel good as a cop, because I've seen officers walk away from this job for good after the day they had to pull the trigger.
14:32And not because they were wrong, I just believe that living with their memory was heavier than anyone on the outside will ever understand.
