00:00It's December 1st, 2018.
00:04CCTV records 22-year-old Grace and her Tinder date, Jesse, getting ready to leave a bar.
00:11They had just met a few hours ago, but already they're about to head back to his place.
00:16From the outside, everything seemed to be going perfectly well.
00:20So well, in fact, that soon after they could be seen heading to a nearby hotel and up to Jesse's hotel room shortly after.
00:26Nobody could have expected that this was the last time Grace would ever be seen alive.
00:37The next day happened to be her birthday, and nobody was able to reach her all day.
00:42And the same was true even days after.
00:44It was like she disappeared off the face of the earth.
00:47Her friends and family quickly reported her missing, but to no avail.
00:50Meanwhile, Jesse was recorded on CCTV out and about, going up and down the elevator, carrying cleaning supplies, and what appeared to be a suitcase.
00:59A suitcase with contents that would shock everyone to the core.
01:05And what's even worse, the killer had another date lined up.
01:09And if the cops don't intervene and arrest him quickly, this girl, as well as countless others, could fall victim to this very same man.
01:16Tell me what happened last Saturday.
01:26Um, from the beginning?
01:28Yeah.
01:28At 5.37pm on December 1st, 2018, Grace, who just finished a backpacking journey from England to New Zealand, leaves her hostel to meet Jesse.
01:39Meanwhile, Jesse is having pre-date drinks at a local bar, downing several beers before the date begins.
01:45In fact, as he leaves the bar, you can still see at least four empty bottles sitting on the table.
01:50They meet in a popular spot where there's plenty of people, making Grace feel safe while she meets her date for the first time.
01:57But this will be a false sense of security, as Jesse has no plans to try anything untoward in public.
02:04He's going to wait until they're alone.
02:07Suspecting nothing, Grace accompanies Jesse to a bar where they drink together for over an hour before they head for a Mexican bar at 7.15 for more drinks.
02:15And yet another bar named Bluestone Room around 8.30pm.
02:19This will be where Jesse tries his luck, and sees if he can get a little closer to Grace.
02:24At 8.54, they share their first kiss.
02:30This is when Jesse takes a trip to the bathroom, and where Grace sends her very last message to anyone.
02:36Telling her friends that it's going amazingly well, and that she just clicks with him so well.
02:41She's probably excited to spend the night with a man that she genuinely likes.
02:46She could have had no idea that instead, he was about to end her life in one of the most horrific ways possible.
02:56The next morning, Grace's phone starts to receive a ton of messages.
03:00It's her birthday, and there are plenty of friends who want to send her their best wishes.
03:04Each and every one of these messages goes unanswered.
03:07The first sign that something is wrong is at 8am, when Jesse enters the very same elevator,
03:13this time on his own, throwing the camera a suspicious glance.
03:17If you think he's just getting the birthday girl a morning coffee, then think again.
03:21During that night, Jesse killed Grace by strangulation,
03:25and now he's going to try and do everything he can to cover up his crime,
03:28and he needs to do it quickly.
03:30Because he's already got another potential victim lined up.
03:33By 8.07am, Jesse is in town and about to start the most eerie shopping trip possible.
03:40He starts at the warehouse on Elliott Street,
03:42where he buys a suitcase that he plans to hide Grace's body in.
03:45He checks out the width and depth of the suitcase to make sure it'll fit her,
03:49so he can dispose of her body before anyone can catch him.
03:52Then, 25 minutes later, he makes his way to another store,
03:55where he buys a number of cleaning products that will be used to clean up the murder scene.
04:00Then, he returns to his apartment for a number of hours,
04:03reappearing at 10.42am before he jumps in a taxi and apex car rental where he rents a car.
04:10But it's what he does next that's truly shocking,
04:13and puts pressure on the cops to discover and solve his murder as quickly as possible.
04:18As Grace's body lies in the apartment,
04:21Jesse goes on a date with another girl he'd met on Tinder.
04:24Given that he has all the equipment ready to hide one body,
04:27it's speculated that he planned this to be his second victim of the day.
04:31As he arrives at the bar,
04:33Jesse is wearing exactly the same clothing that he wore the night before.
04:36Possibly the same clothes that he wore when he killed Grace.
04:40We're not sure whether Kempson was as pushy in his initial messages to this girl,
04:44but what we do know is that the conversation he struck up with her during the date
04:48not only brought up some major red flags,
04:51it downright terrified her.
04:53Allegedly, he wanted to talk to her about where to hide a dead body from the police.
04:58Right away, the date is over,
05:00and this girl's instincts may have just saved her life.
05:03It's hard to imagine the horror that she would have felt
05:06when she learned the truth about the man she just walked away from,
05:09certain that he likely had the same fate lined up for her as he did with Grace.
05:14At 8.56pm, we can see Jesse carrying a piece of equipment back to his apartment.
05:20More precisely, it's a carpet cleaner,
05:23and he's going to try and use that carpet cleaner
05:25to try and remove any trace of Grace's presence at his apartment.
05:28He's even got two bottles of cleaner in his hand,
05:31making sure he's got enough to get the job done.
05:33Thirty minutes later,
05:34and we're greeted with the product of all his hard work.
05:37He's about to try and hide the body.
05:39He reappears in the elevator with a trolley carrying several luggage bags,
05:42one of which is the suitcase that he'd bought earlier that morning.
05:46It's way too heavy to carry, as inside is Grace's dead body.
05:51Of course, he can't walk through the streets with this amount of baggage,
05:54which is exactly why he hired the rental car.
05:57Minutes later, he's loading the rental car with all of the baggage,
06:01ready to make the next move in his attempt to cover up this murder,
06:05hiding the body in a place he thinks no one will find it.
06:08The next morning at 7am,
06:10Jesse buys a shovel and heads back to his apartment.
06:12where he collects some clothing to take to the dry cleaners,
06:15destroying more potential evidence of his crime.
06:18But he's not done there,
06:19as he stops off at a random trash can,
06:21tossing a large trash bag inside.
06:23Then Jesse takes his rental car for a deep clean,
06:26paying particular attention to the rear of the vehicle,
06:29where he had stashed the suitcase containing Grace's body.
06:32And with that, his work was done.
06:35For the next two days,
06:36Grace's family and friends go through turmoil.
06:39Nobody has heard from her.
06:40She hasn't posted on any social media,
06:43and she isn't answering either of her two phones.
06:46Her family report her missing to Auckland police on December 5th.
06:49Grace's father, David, even flies to Auckland,
06:52and makes a heartfelt appeal for his daughter's safe return.
06:55Grace has been missing for several days.
06:58And as a family, we've been extremely concerned for her welfare.
07:01If there's anybody who's seen, spoken to,
07:04or come into contact with Grace,
07:05come forward and contact the investigation team.
07:08With so much media coverage at the time,
07:11Jesse likely saw her father's appeal,
07:13and yet the family's pleas went unanswered.
07:15But Auckland police are about to use various methods
07:18to track Grace's last movements
07:19and find their main suspect in her disappearance.
07:23They're able to find out she was on a date with a mystery man,
07:26and after poring over hours of surveillance footage,
07:29they find the last person she was with,
07:32and track him back to his apartment.
07:35At 3pm on December 5th,
07:38the cops turn up at the City Life Hotel,
07:40but they almost miss their man,
07:42as he eyes them in the lobby when he approaches the front door.
07:45Jesse thinks if he casually strolls away,
07:48he won't be noticed,
07:49but these eagle-eyed cops don't miss a trick
07:51and quickly apprehend him before he can make an escape.
07:54At this point,
07:55the smartest thing for Jesse to do
07:57is to own up to his crime,
07:59maybe try to play it off as an accident,
08:01and face the consequences.
08:02But he's not going to do any such thing.
08:05In the interrogation room,
08:06he plans to lie his way out of this,
08:09but he's completely unaware
08:10that the cops have already seen every move
08:12from the night of the murder,
08:14and have about as much evidence
08:15as they could possibly ask for.
08:19At the start of the interview,
08:20he has no reason to lie,
08:22as he's just recalling the events before the murder.
08:25Tell us about Grace.
08:27So I was talking to Grace on Tinder.
08:32We'd matched on Friday.
08:34I saw that we'd matched the next day on Saturday.
08:39And then we met at Sky City,
08:44and then we decided that we were going up
08:46to Andy's Burger Bar,
08:46which is on the first floor.
08:52Not long into this interview,
08:53Jesse becomes entangled in his first lie,
08:56as he claims Grace was the one pushing for a date,
08:59when we already know he was the one
09:01trying hard to meet Grace
09:02in their initial messages.
09:04Whose idea was it to go to that particular burger place?
09:06Me.
09:07Because I didn't initially know that she was real.
09:11What do you mean?
09:13Well, there's a lot of...
09:14So have you heard of catfish?
09:16No.
09:17So catfishing is where someone uses your profile,
09:21uses your photos,
09:22and pretends to be you,
09:23and then meets,
09:24and you're a completely different person.
09:26Right.
09:27And it's...
09:28On Tinder,
09:29it's all about the way you look.
09:31And so if they use more endearing photos,
09:34you're more likely to swipe for them.
09:36Okay.
09:37Yeah.
09:38How does a...
09:39How does meeting in a public place
09:41sort of protect you from meeting someone
09:43who's not as good-looking as...
09:45Well, there's security there.
09:46So if she wasn't who she said she was,
09:49at least in my mind, I'd feel safe.
09:54When Jesse is confronted with evidence
09:56from surveillance cameras,
09:57he continues to lie,
09:59digging a hole for himself
10:00that he's going to struggle to escape from.
10:03No.
10:04I go down Victoria Street,
10:07straight down to the bottom,
10:10and then hang a left,
10:13and I head towards the viaduct.
10:15You go to the viaduct a bit?
10:17Uh, yeah.
10:18Yeah.
10:19Yeah.
10:19You've kind of walked in a bit of a funny direction
10:22if you were planning to go to the viaduct.
10:24Well, it's the direction I normally go.
10:26Yeah.
10:28It's, um...
10:29I mean, I'm just sort of saying,
10:30like, if you were planning to go to the viaduct...
10:33I normally go down Queen Street
10:35and then cross at the bottom of Queen Street,
10:37go through the, um...
10:39the containers
10:42and then walk along the wharf.
10:45Yeah.
10:46Is there a particular reason you were going to do that?
10:49Uh, I feel safer down that way.
10:51The cop obviously suspects something strange here.
10:55Jesse's behavior and responses
10:56don't seem to line up or make sense at all,
10:59and if Jesse is lying,
11:00it'll only take a good few questions
11:02to throw him off completely.
11:03So the cop starts to apply the pressure,
11:06sending Jesse into panic.
11:07If you don't know if she's been murdered or not yet,
11:09she may be alive in a while.
11:11Okay.
11:11But she might also be dead.
11:12Okay.
11:13Okay?
11:14And it could be that you've done it.
11:16Okay.
11:25Hey, I just want to ask a question.
11:27Have I been arrested for something I didn't do?
11:29You've never been arrested, mate.
11:30Oh.
11:31No.
11:31Oh, s***.
11:32Oh.
11:34Oh, s***.
11:35Holy s***.
11:36He's not being arrested just yet,
11:39but Auckland police are convinced
11:40Jesse is either behind Grace's disappearance
11:43or is at least involved.
11:44And the more they investigate this case,
11:46the more evidence they find to suggest
11:48Jesse is the one responsible.
11:50It's not just the surveillance footage
11:51that helps solve this case.
11:53Remember the new suitcase and cleaning products
11:55Jesse bought the morning after?
11:57Well, believe it or not,
11:58they were all bought on Grace's credit card,
12:00as well as an extra night's stay
12:02at the City Life Hotel.
12:03In fact,
12:04it's very possible he paid for his second date
12:07on Grace's credit card.
12:09An extra day at the hotel
12:11should give Jesse time to clean up the mess,
12:14but it's going to take more than a carpet cleaner
12:15to get rid of the evidence.
12:17When police search his apartment,
12:19they find traces of Grace's blood.
12:21The credit card payments,
12:23the witness testimony,
12:24cell phone locations placing Grace and Jesse together,
12:27and the staggering detail found in the surveillance footage
12:30backed their suspect into a corner,
12:31and in his second interview on December 7th,
12:34they left Jesse no choice but to confess,
12:37a confession that would soon lead
12:39into one of the most interesting,
12:41but troubling defences ever used in court.
12:44They started talking to me about Fifty Shades of Grey,
12:49which is a sex fantasy movie that's out.
12:54We started having sex.
12:57At first it was just normal.
13:01It was very placid.
13:03And then she asked me if we could get into bondage.
13:08And then all I remember is falling asleep in the shower.
13:13I need to stop.
13:16I need to go.
13:17Would you like some fresh air?
13:18Yeah, please.
13:19I was in shock.
13:21And I didn't know what to do.
13:26I went downstairs,
13:29and I was just,
13:31I don't know,
13:31I was all over the place.
13:33I didn't believe what had happened.
13:38I was just terrified and scared.
13:41I thought that she had gone.
13:43I thought she had left.
13:45Pathologist, specialist doctor,
13:47will perform a post-mortem.
13:48Yeah.
13:49Be very skilled at establishing people's courses.
13:52Do you understand that?
13:53Yeah.
13:53I went to the warehouse at the atrium
13:59and bought a suitcase.
14:06I went back,
14:08and I was just in shock
14:11because it just didn't seem right.
14:14I left to go and get cleaning products.
14:18So I messaged a friend
14:19and said,
14:21I'll meet you at Revelry.
14:22And after finishing drinks with her,
14:27I got back to city life.
14:30And the whole time,
14:31I just kept saying,
14:32I'm sorry.
14:36And then I went downstairs
14:39and I grabbed the porter thing
14:43and I put the suitcase
14:47on top of the porter thing.
14:50and I drove the hire car into Wilson's car park
14:54and parked it.
14:54I woke up the next day
14:58at about 5 a.m.
15:00and drove the car
15:02out to Kumu at first.
15:04I picked up a shovel
15:06from ITM at Kumu.
15:10I ended up driving towards the Waitakere's.
15:13I went into the bush.
15:15I dug a hole.
15:16I went and got the suitcase
15:18and I covered the hole.
15:20And then I drove.
15:24Where is her possessions?
15:27I threw them in the rubbish.
15:29Whereabouts?
15:31Albert Park.
15:32Rubbish.
15:34Rubbish.
15:34So what items of her property
15:35have been disposed of in Albert Park?
15:39Everything.
15:40All of her clothing?
15:41Everything that was in the room.
15:42Whereabouts did you clean the car?
15:46The outside of the car?
15:48I think it was in Henderson.
15:50I don't know West very well.
15:52Okay.
15:52And what did you use to clean the car?
15:55Water blaster thing
15:57from a car cleaning place.
16:00Did she have any injuries?
16:02Not that I can remember.
16:04I was just panicking.
16:08Did you inflict any injuries
16:09on her that caused her to die?
16:11Uh, no.
16:12Did you kill Grace Mullane?
16:14No.
16:16Okay.
16:18And you're under arrest
16:19for the murder of Grace Mullane
16:21on or about the 2nd of December.
16:23Okay.
16:24You understand?
16:24Yeah.
16:25Did you intend to cause her death?
16:27No.
16:28Are you ready to take us
16:29to where she is?
16:30Yeah.
16:30The media called it
16:31the Fifty Shades of Grey defense.
16:34The idea is that
16:35someone may consent to
16:37being harmed during intimacy
16:38knowing the dangers involved.
16:41If they made no indication to stop,
16:43then it would be seen as an accident
16:44and the person responsible
16:46shouldn't face a murder charge.
16:48But this defense has always been
16:50seen as more of a scapegoat
16:52used by lawyers
16:53to try and get their defendant off
16:54with a lighter sentence,
16:56which in this case
16:57would be manslaughter.
16:58This doesn't change
16:59what happened after Grace's death
17:01and the disturbing series of events
17:02uncovered during the investigation.
17:04From December 1st,
17:06the day before the date,
17:07all the way to December 7th,
17:08cops found Google searches
17:10made by Jessie
17:11looking for a place
17:12to hide the body.
17:13He'd also taken photos
17:14of Grace's body
17:15before and after
17:16he packed her into the suitcase.
17:18They found Grace's body
17:19on December 9th, 2018
17:21in the Waitakere Ranges
17:23just outside of Auckland.
17:24It was determined
17:25that she was strangled
17:26and had bruises
17:27on her arms and chest
17:28consistent with being pinned down.
17:30In New Zealand,
17:31there's no such thing
17:32as first-degree
17:33or second-degree murder.
17:35All charges are treated the same,
17:37carrying a life sentence.
17:38That meant there was
17:39no investigation
17:40into the premeditation.
17:42All that mattered
17:43was if Jessie killed her or not.
17:45It was that simple.
17:46Jessie maintained his innocence
17:47but was eventually found guilty.
17:49And on February 21st, 2020,
17:52he was sentenced to life in prison
17:54with a minimum non-parole period
17:56of 17 years.
17:58After his trial,
17:59two more women came forward
18:00and claimed Jessie
18:01had sexually assaulted them
18:03after they met him on Tinder.
18:05He was found guilty
18:06on those charges as well,
18:07adding another 11 years to life
18:10added to his sentence.
