At least two houses have been destroyed by a bushfire at Stieglitz near St Helens on Tasmania’s east coast. The fire flared to emergency level overnight and while milder conditions helped firefighters today it is still too dangerous for residents to return.
00:05It just seemed to get really big really quickly and just so much smoke.
00:11Fifteen minutes ago that was pretty clear and now it's just black smoke. You can see the flames over there.
00:18The bushfire started at Stiglitz in St Helens on Tuesday afternoon and quickly escalated to emergency warning level.
00:25Residents were told to evacuate the area as firefighters tried to get the blaze under control.
00:36As night fell crews battled on with the flames standing stark against the dark sky.
00:42The crews faced really challenging conditions last night. Wind was very strong and erratic.
00:48In the morning it was confirmed two houses had been lost.
00:52Crews on the ground have done a fantastic job to limit that damage to two houses. It could have been a lot worse.
00:59Many were left wondering what happened to the homes they'd abandoned.
01:04Lachlan helped his dad get out on Tuesday night. He was wetting everything down when they were told to leave.
01:10It's pretty hectic when that happens but you've got to do what you've got to do. You've got to do the right thing.
01:14You've just got to get out and just make sure that you're safe and everything else doesn't really matter.
01:19This morning his father Paul found out his property had survived.
01:24I'm feeling great because everyone I know is safe and the house is in good order.
01:30The father and son spent the night in the car while others headed to the evacuation centre in the nearby town of St Helens.
01:38We had literally hundreds of people here at the emergency evacuation and we also had the absolute best of the goodwill of our people of the community on show.
01:49Michelle Appleby has been serving hot drinks at the centre. The council is covering the cost.
01:54It's a bit rough for a lot of them so anything we could do. This is only something small but a coffee can sometimes make your day just that little bit better.
02:05People around the area have got together and they're helping each other. It's just a good community.
02:12While some residents spent the night at the council evacuation centre others stayed in commercial accommodation or with family and friends.
02:20It's not yet clear when they'll be able to return home.
02:23St Helens Point Road remains closed. Firefighters are focusing on containing the fire and then assessing other dangers like downed power poles and hazardous trees.
02:34While I appreciate that people want to get in and check on their properties or want to get home, it's just too dangerous for people to go in there at the current time.
02:41The cause of the bushfire isn't yet known.
