00:00During his 22 years living in Dolphin Sands, Ian Hellman has seen many bushfires.
00:08But none like the one that devastated the area two weeks ago.
00:13It was pretty horrific. The winds were very strong. Very strong.
00:18The strongest winds in a fire that I've seen.
00:21His house survived. His sauna didn't.
00:24Mr Hellman was lucky.
00:26The fire destroyed 19 homes and damaged another 14.
00:32As the community comes to terms with the destruction,
00:35some residents, like Mr Hellman, want changes to prevent future blazes.
00:41If we made these areas with having a special fire ban, distinct from the rest of the state,
00:48like a total fire ban all year, or you need to register any fire.
00:54If the community would like that type of restriction in place for a period of time,
00:59we certainly would look at that as a suitable outcome.
01:03However, people also have the right to cook and keep warm.
01:07The Tasmania Fire Service says about half the fires in this area have been caused by burn offs.
01:12This latest fire was the result of a registered fuel reduction burn that wasn't extinguished properly.
01:18Many admit there are lessons to be learned.
01:21We need to engage with our community more often, get that message out,
01:25whether it's a bushfire plan, whether it's making sure your fire's fully extinguished.
01:31There are always learnings. We can always do everything we can to ensure our community is safe.
01:37While the danger has passed, the burnt landscape and destroyed homes are a stark reminder of what has been,
01:44as the community tries to rebuild.
01:48The state and federal governments have handed out $120,000 in emergency grants so far.
01:54It's obviously going to impact on people for a while yet,
01:57and it's really important that we do provide appropriate support and resources.
02:02As Mr Hellman assesses the damage, he hopes this fire will prove a turning point.
02:08What do you give him a word?
02:10I am asked to ask for the questions to ask for the questions,
02:11I'm asking for questions,
02:16if I have any questions,
02:18we will see for questions.
02:20If I would like to ask for questions,
02:25and repeat questions,
02:26then I would like to ask us to answer these questions,
02:27and we would like to ask the questions,
02:28or we'd like to ask for questions.
