00:00So my first question for you is just how did this commercial come about and like what was the phone call like when you were asked to do this?
00:07Oh, it was amazing, you know, to have Popcorners contact you that they want to recreate the whole Breaking Bad environment and bring these iconic characters together once again, you know, in order to break into something good, you know, this time into a wholesome snack that's, you know, not, it's not, it's not fried, it's air popped with these delicious flavors.
00:29So I was like, wow, really, we're going to recreate Breaking Bad, you know, it's going to give the fans a chance to re-experience Breaking Bad, which I never thought would ever happen again, you know, to be able to step back into the role, you know, of Tuco Salamanca and then to meet up with Aaron and Brian and create Walt and Jesse, and then to be back in the same environment with the same RV that they used in the show.
00:55And then to be wearing the same wardrobe, it all felt very surreal.
01:00It's almost like it never happened.
01:02It's like a dream.
01:03I was going to ask, so that is the same RV.
01:05That was actually going to be one of my questions.
01:07Yes.
01:07Same, same, same wardrobe.
01:10I was worried they pulled it out of the Sony archives.
01:13And then, you know, how amazing is that?
01:16It's crazy.
01:17I didn't think I would ever see, see that again.
01:19I know, watching it, it feels like you're just watching another scene from the show all these years later, which makes this so powerful in a way.
01:26Right.
01:26It felt as if we stepped back into the Breaking Bad universe.
01:30It felt as if we had never left.
01:33And even though all this time has passed, you know, you've got a whole new generation of fans that are going to experience this for the first time and that are going to read.
01:42And all the fans that love Breaking Bad, that love these characters, are going to get a chance to re-experience Breaking Bad on a whole different platform.
01:50And, you know, in the Super Bowl ad for Pepsi, and then, you know, they're going to get a huge laugh out of it because, you know, everybody knows what happens in Breaking Bad.
02:00Everybody knows the scenes.
02:01They know the lines.
02:03They know what you're going to say.
02:04And then to have, you know, Popcorners put their twist on it and have us break into something good, you know, it's a wholesome snack.
02:10And then we get to play around with it as if we were just, you know, dealing with all the situations in Breaking Bad.
02:16To me, it's amazing.
02:18Yeah, it's a great snack and an even more incredible show.
02:21It's truly one of my favorites still to this day.
02:23Okay, how could you go wrong when you got a great show and a great snack?
02:28You can't go wrong.
02:29That's late eight.
02:29Right.
02:30And then we bring a whole twist of humor to it.
02:32It's going to make everyone just laugh and they're going to love it.
02:36You can't ask for anything else.
02:37How did you, I mean, I know it's obviously just a brief, you know, snippet for the commercial, but how did you prepare to be Tuco again after all these years?
02:45I mean, did you, how did you get back into that character?
02:48Yeah, that's the difficult part.
02:50You know, luckily, I write everything down.
02:53So I do, whenever I build a character, I do all my analysis, I write everything down.
02:57So I had my notes.
03:00So I know, and I keep it, I keep them all in notebooks.
03:03So I just have to go back.
03:04You have to do all the work again.
03:05Cause you know, I'm, I'm not, I'm not like Tuco.
03:08So I had to go back and find exactly where I was at, how I built it, you know, mentally, physically, emotionally, where the character lives.
03:16And then you have to, you know, recreate that.
03:19And then to have this platform, you know, to do it, it was amazing.
03:23I just want to like, say, you know, thank you to Pepsi and Frito-Lay, Popcorners put us in their ad, you know, to give us the chance to do that.
03:30Because it really felt like we were just back on the set in Albuquerque.
03:34Yeah.
03:35Did, what was it like being with Aaron and Brian again?
03:39I mean, have, have you kept up in touch with them throughout these past years since the show ended?
03:43You know, no, you know, you, you, you show up, you work, you go, you move on, you go do other projects, you know, you know, I'm always constantly working and they are too.
03:54So you really, you know, unless you, you know, you, you, you, you close to each other, you really don't have that.
04:00But it felt like we really felt like we never left, like we were back on the set and then we were back in time.
04:06It was, it was surreal.
04:09Yeah.
04:09It was like truly like being in a time machine.
04:11Was there any talk about other former cast members being with you guys?
04:14And if so, is that something that you would have wanted for this commercial?
04:17I would have loved it if they brought in the whole cast from Breaking Bad.
04:21You know, if they just had people walking in and out eating chips, how amazing would that be?
04:25That would have been true.
04:27Salamanca's where if we had all the Salamanca's show up and just start eating chips, how, how, how incredible would that be?
04:34That would have blown people's brains for sure.
04:36Right?
04:36I mean, this is going to blow, this is going to blow their minds when they see this.
04:40Yeah.
04:40Yeah.
04:40To have that would be insane.
04:43We'll take any type of Breaking Bad reunion that we can get.
04:46Do you have a favorite moment filming this with Brian and Aaron that you could share maybe?
04:51Just favorite moment.
04:52You know, I think I think the favorite moment for me was just when Walt blows up my lab just in that episode when when we first really got into it because, you know, it ignited everything.
05:06It just like set it off.
05:08So we set the tone.
05:10So to have that, you know, where it's just it's it's it's it's it's that energy.
05:16Yeah.
05:16What do you miss most about playing Tuco?
05:18I mean, obviously, such an iconic show, such an iconic character, had such an amazing run through all its seasons.
05:24What do you miss most about that role?
05:26You know, I don't miss anything about playing Tuco.
05:29At least you're honest.
05:30I don't know if that's the answer you expected, but it's so difficult.
05:34It's not exactly a hero.
05:36Right.
05:37It's so difficult to do.
05:38You know, I what I did love about it was just watching it play out on screen, just like the fans are going to get a chance to re-experience Breaking Bad and re-experience these iconic characters.
05:51So when you see it, you know, that that's what's fun for me.
05:55So that that's what I like the results.
05:58Yeah.
05:58When you were with Brian and Aaron, did you guys kind of talk about maybe trying to do some type of reunion, whether it be like a special in the coming years, trying to get the whole gang back together?
06:06No, you know, you're so busy, focused on what you're doing at the moment.
06:12You know, I mean, you're shooting all day.
06:15You know, you're trying to get and you really want to everybody's so focused on the work and you're really excited to be there.
06:21You know, and it was really lovely to see, you know, Aaron and Brian and to have Vince Gilligan, who directed the piece and then, you know, brought us all back together and recreated this whole environment.
06:31And, you know, gave us a chance, you know, again, through Pop Corners with their little twist on the commercial, you know, breaking into something good as opposed to something bad, just this wholesome snack.
06:43So it was just it was just exciting, you know, to be there and to do it because I never thought that I would ever, you know, revisit this character or to be in this plane again, you know, within the Breaking Bad universe.
06:56So exciting. And I think the fans are going to really love it for sure.
07:00Do you have fun plans on the Super Bowl to watch the game and also your big commercial?
07:04You know what? I'm so excited to be in the Super Bowl commercial and because, you know, every actor, I mean, that that's one of the things that you would love to do because it's such a huge audience.
07:16And then to be able and, you know, all the Super Bowl commercials are the best commercials.
07:20And I really think that Pop Corners hit it out of the park with this one.
07:23So be a part of that. Dream come true.
07:27Now, absolutely. I know you were only in a few episodes of Better Call Saul, but that show also had amazing success.
07:33What's your thoughts on just how well that show did and everyone that was involved with it?
07:38Well, I love that they jump back in time and that they give you an opportunity to get to know personally my character in a different light, in a different way, you know.
07:50So you really got a greater sense of Tuco and his family bonds and how he really thinks and feels.
07:58So, you know, to have that opportunity to do that, for me, like as an actor, to investigate it was amazing.
08:06And then, you know, and then to work, you know, with the cast and the crew and then, you know, to create, you know, this great show and then to be able to do the work was just fantastic because it's a whole nother spin on the character.
08:19Yeah. And it's pretty incredible that, you know, Vince Gilligan and I went two for two in terms of making such great television.
08:26Do you still have any props or anything from the set of Breaking Bad that you kept that you still have to this day?
08:32Well, I have the original grill that we use that they encased in Lucite.
08:38So I was given that kind of like as a lovely parting gift, which would be like, is that the grill?
08:44I'm like, that's the grill.
08:46That's a good gift. What do you what do you think the buzz is going to be once the commercial comes out on Super Bowl from all the fans?
08:51I mean, I'm sure there's going to be stuff blowing up online about it.
08:54What do you think the fans are going to say? What's the reaction?
08:56I think the fan I think the first of all, I think the fans are going to love it.
08:59I think the fans are crazy over it.
09:01I think they're going to love the fact that, you know, it's a commercial that you got this amazing show and these amazing characters in this platform, you know, pitching this product, this wholesome product, you know, that that's what we're talking about.
09:14You know, there's this product that's made with, you know, basic ingredients and, you know, it's air pop, not fried.
09:21And by the way, I love the product.
09:23I mean, just so you know, because my favorite one, I love most of the flavors, but my favorite ones are the kettle corn and the cinnamon.
09:31I love I love popcorners are so good.
09:33And honestly, watching the commercial, I was like, damn, I got to go to the store and buy a couple because it made me want it, which I guess it means the commercial did something right.
09:41The commercial is working.
09:43Yeah. So then just my last question for you, how interested would you be in reprising the role of Tuco again?
09:48And I know we kind of touched on this before, but just playing the character again and any type of special or any type of project that could come up in the future.
09:55You know, it would be interesting to revisit the character.
09:59It's a difficult task.
10:01You know, I say it with interpretation because it wasn't easy to do it the first time.
10:05It wasn't easy to reprise it on Better Call Saul.
10:09And it definitely was not easy to do it in the Popcorners ad.
10:13But, you know, you go there, it's just so taxing on you, you know, because it's so high energy.
10:22Yeah.
10:23Even when Tuco is not saying anything, it's bubbling underneath.
10:28So for sure.
10:29But if there was ever if there was ever a time to revisit Tuco, it's for Popcorners.
10:33That's for sure.
10:34Yeah. And then just say thank you to Pepsi.
10:36Thanks for, you know, reimagining Breaking Bad and bringing these characters back together.
10:41Yeah. Well, it's so exciting to see.
10:43I'm excited for the whole country to see it during the Super Bowl.
10:46Thank you so much, Raymond, for taking the time.
10:48All right. Thank you for your time.
