Bethenny Frankel Interview Power Of Women 2019
Transcript
00:00So we have a bowl filled with quotes from empowering, powerful, wonderful women.
00:05And so we're having everyone pick one out and read it and react to it.
00:12Oh, wow. Perfect. This is perfect for me.
00:15Words have power. TV has power. My pen has power.
00:19Shonda Rhimes. Truth.
00:21So words have power because people can be so cruel these days on social media.
00:26People are crowdsourcing hate.
00:28If I don't like you or something you did, people are crowdsourcing other people to then go against someone.
00:33And I'm not into that. And particularly on television, women are doing that now.
00:37They're using the Internet and social media for evil and not for good.
00:42I don't like that at all. TV has power.
00:45I've taken camera crews to Puerto Rico, to North Carolina, you know, raised millions of dollars and helped thousands of people.
00:51So that's using. And I've also experienced grief on television.
00:55And I think that's helping people. That's connecting. That's showing.
00:59And I've raised a lot of money because of television.
01:01That's a good use of power. It's like a superhero.
01:04Exactly.
01:04Okay. And my pen has power.
01:06You know, I've written 10 books. I've written a children's book.
01:10I've written a book called The Place of Yes to help people at a crossroads.
01:13And I'm, you know, in ways at a crossroads. I'm always at a crossroads.
01:15So the pen has a lot of power, too, in writing to communicate.
01:19And also because kids don't really read as much now.
01:22Also because they're always on their phones and they're looking everything up.
01:26So I think writing is important because people need to still be reading.
01:30So I like that quote.
01:31You raised so much money to help the people of Puerto Rico.
01:34You know, the truth is, I don't like to play the blame game because when the relief effort was happening,
01:42I was there very early on before the government.
01:45And I was looking around in a mess and I just said, I'm just picking up a broom.
01:49Everybody said not to go. It's too dangerous.
01:51I said not to go.
01:52I don't know where the priorities are.
01:55I really, really don't know.
01:56It's so easy for everyone to blame and to say, I would do this.
01:59I don't know.
02:00So many people have said to me, I should be a relief advisor.
02:04I should be a disaster advisor because somebody wasn't delegated.
02:07I know that there wasn't a lot of an organized plan in Puerto Rico.
02:11But the whole country has to be prioritized.
02:13And I don't know where Puerto Rico falls in the prioritization.
02:17Between the wall and between the Midwest and the factory workers.
02:23I don't know.
02:24I would have to look at the whole board.
02:26Running for president, I couldn't do because I can't be in pajamas all day.
02:29Maybe I could.
02:30Maybe I could.
02:31You happen to have ran the Playboy match and maybe I could be in pajamas and run the government.
02:35I don't know.
02:36I just know that, thank God for people like the people I work with,
02:39to be able to help places that are in need.
02:41Because we got so much done.
02:43And I didn't even know what I was doing the first day.
02:46But you just sort of come to a place of yes and get things done.
02:50And now, how do you balance it all?
02:51TV, books, you know, your business, so successful.
02:56I balance it all because I'm a homebody and I'm most of the time home with my daughter.
03:01And my daughter gives me balance because when I'm with her, I don't have a nanny.
03:05And I'm at pick up and drop off every day.
03:07Albeit in pajamas, but I am at pick up and drop off.
03:10When we're together, we're totally together.
03:12We spend quality time together.
03:13I don't, if I work, which is very rare, I would go to HSN and spend an hour selling
03:18and then three hours with her, three days with her wakeboarding and having fun.
03:22And so that's my place of yes, that balance.
03:24I don't have a big social life.
03:26I don't really go out.
03:27So my life is with her and then the rest is work.
03:31But I have a pretty good balance with work because I'm reducing, I don't have as many buckets.
03:36It's fewer buckets full.
03:38Mark Burnett would be a bucket.
03:39HSN would be a bucket.
03:41So doing, you know, this is a, I don't come out that much.
03:43This was a reason to get out of pajamas.
03:46A good reason.
03:46Do you enjoy it, what you do?
03:49Oh, do I enjoy, yes.
03:51Now I really do because I'm really picking and choosing.
03:53And it's very hard to say no because there's so many interesting things.
03:57But there is a power in saying no, just as powerful as saying yes.
04:01And I want to enjoy my life.
04:02I want to be happy.
04:03I don't want to be, I don't, my life is not defined by how full my calendar is.
04:06That sounds dreadful.
04:08Awesome.
04:08Thank you so much, Bethany.
04:12Philanthropy gives you balance because you meet so many interesting people.
04:15So it feels like you're being social because you're connecting.
04:17And it gives you a purpose.
04:19You're doing many things at the same time.
04:20You're getting enriched personally and you're helping other people.
04:23Amazing.
04:23Thank you, Bethany.
04:24Thank you, too.
