Jennifer Nettles Interview Power Of Women 2019
Transcript
00:00Hi Allie, I'm Jennifer.
00:01We've talked on the phone multiple times from Hollywood.
00:03Oh great, okay, good.
00:04And such a big...
00:05Hi face.
00:06Hi face and a voice.
00:07I know.
00:08And a sweetheart.
00:09I'm such a big fan of yours.
00:11I'm so excited to have you here.
00:12So we have a little game where we have quotes from really empowering, wonderful women in
00:17here.
00:18So I want you to pick one and react to the quote.
00:19Ooh, okay.
00:20And do I get to read it too?
00:21Yes, please.
00:22Or just react in silence and then everybody gets to guess what it is.
00:25That'd be great.
00:26Oh, always remember, you will live, you will love, you will dance again.
00:29J-Lo.
00:30Mm-hmm.
00:31Well, I love Miss J-Lo.
00:32She and I actually have a song on my last solo record, Playing With Fire, called My House.
00:39And actually some of those sentiments are very much the same.
00:42But I watch her, okay?
00:44And first of all, what you've said, J-Lo, is true.
00:48You will live, you will love, and you will dance again.
00:50And no matter what happens, we have to remember that.
00:52You know, tomorrow is a new day.
00:54And speaking of which, I watch her as she continues in her career to reinvent herself.
00:58J-Lo.
00:59Absolutely, yes.
01:00J-Lo.
01:01And I just love it.
01:02She remains relevant.
01:03She gets out there.
01:04She has a good time.
01:05And yeah, she just, she's herself and I love it.
01:07Yeah.
01:08Well, speaking of that, thank you.
01:10And here, Nick, I'm going to give this to you.
01:12Speaking of that, you have completely, you know, dominated the airwaves with I Can Do Hard Things.
01:19Tell me a little bit about, I mean, that's the song of the day here as well.
01:22Yes.
01:23Tell me a little bit about how that empowers you and your song empowers you.
01:27So, I Can Do Hard Things was really inspired by what it sounds.
01:30I was going through a hard time at the time and I thought I was just writing my own little confessional self.
01:35And then what happened is when that song came out, sort of a groundswell of community started to happen of women sharing their own stories saying,
01:43this is my story, this is my song.
01:46I've done these hard things today.
01:48I've, you know, I'm at the tail end of my chemo treatment.
01:51I have a parent that I take care of who is elderly.
01:54I'm a single mom.
01:55All of these stories these women are sharing, right?
01:58And it has become really a community.
02:01And that's what I think today is about also.
02:03It's coming together, celebrating each other.
02:05So this song just, it felt appropriate.
02:07Absolutely.
02:08And it is inspiring.
02:09It is empowering.
02:10So many of your other lyrics from your older songs are just the same.
02:14I mean, one that comes to mind is, won't you stand up and use your voice?
02:18What do, thinking back to your old lyrics and your old songs, do they continue to empower you?
02:25They do? You mean my old songs too?
02:27Is that what you mean?
02:28Yeah, those lyrics and those songs definitely do.
02:30You know, when I write, what I try to do is really be authentic and come from my heart.
02:36And so those kinds of anthems, that is how I see the world.
02:39I think it's important for music to help elevate us, you know?
02:44And those kinds of songs that are reminders that say, you can do this, you know?
02:49Those sorts of messages, I think, are important.
02:51Yeah.
02:52Well, and you are also starring in Harriet coming up as well.
02:55Yes!
02:56I'm so excited.
02:57I'm so excited for you.
02:58Yes, thank you.
02:59When it comes to choosing roles, how do you ensure that they continue to inspire you?
03:04Mmm.
03:05You know what?
03:06Yes.
03:07Well, first of all, this role, getting to be a part of this story, Harriet, it's the story
03:09of Harriet Tubman, who is such a hero in our country.
03:13I think this story is super important in terms of the past as prologue.
03:16And if we do not remember our mistakes, okay, we are more apt to repeat them.
03:22Even if those things are hard to hold, okay?
03:24Even if it's hard to carry that truth, we need to remember that part of our history.
03:28So for that, I think it's a super important story.
03:30I love that I get to be a part of telling it, even a small part.
03:33The cast is phenomenal.
03:35But for me, you know, I think really what the heart of the story is is what I resonate
03:40with regardless when I choose a role.
03:42And is it something that feels like it either pushes me as an artist to do something different
03:47or is it a story that I think is super important that needs to be told?
03:51And then finally, you are nominated for an ACM Award this weekend with Taylor Swift for Babe.
03:56Yes, for video for Babe, yes.
03:57Just what was it like working with such a powerhouse?
04:00Can we expect another collab?
04:01Maybe you and she?
04:02Girl, listen up.
04:03I'm here.
04:04Let's do it.
04:05No, I think she is fantastic as a songwriter.
04:08I mean, like, we went actually to her tour and did a show with her.
04:14If you want to hear 100,000 girls screaming, that was the reputation tour.
04:20I mean, it was just a cacophony.
04:21So her fans are so loyal and she's really tapped into what young women want to hear.
04:25So I'm super proud for her.
04:27Amazing.
04:28Yes.
04:29Thank you so much.
04:30What a pleasure to meet you.
04:32So great to meet you.
04:33Thank you again for watching.
