00:00And if you've listened to our show before, you know that the three of us experienced loss in our families, all like unusually close to each other.
00:09For sure, just a couple months apart.
00:10We even noted that all on major holidays, my uncle passed away on Labor Day, Donnie, your mom on New Year's Day, and your sister on St. Patrick's Day.
00:20That's right.
00:20And everybody deals with grief differently.
00:23And I had a really tough day yesterday, and I had zero plans on talking about this today as a cup of joy.
00:32Why would you ever talk about, oh, I had a really grief-strucken day.
00:36Why would you make that a cup of joy?
00:38And it's because of a conversation I had with my wife Emily.
00:42So at the end of the show yesterday, I'm super, super anal about things.
00:46I like things to be very clean and organized, as you guys know.
00:48Right.
00:49So I got in this weird wind of energy at the end of the show yesterday.
00:53To clean out my voicemail box.
00:55I was like, I've never done this.
00:56And there's thousands of messages.
00:58Holy cow, you don't delete messages.
01:00No.
01:00Okay.
01:01I never even knew that was a thing.
01:03When they changed to the visual voicemail on your phone, I didn't even know it was a thing.
01:08So I realized I haven't said that.
01:09So I'm sitting there on our little couch.
01:11Delete, delete, delete, delete, delete, delete.
01:13And that's when I see a voicemail from my uncle, who passed away from ALS back in 2023.
01:18And for those who aren't familiar with the disease of ALS, commonly, most people, one of their first symptoms is losing your voice.
01:26Right.
01:26Because of the muscles in your throat and muscles in your whole body stop working, really.
01:31The motor neurons stop firing, the whole thing.
01:33But their voice is one of the first things to leave.
01:37So I haven't heard my uncle's voice, not just since he passed, but since years before that.
01:42And there was a voicemail.
01:45And I wasn't even, I was like, oh, well, my uncle and I used to talk on the phone all the time.
01:49This can't be like, hey, you know, it's going to be, call me back.
01:53Right.
01:54All right.
01:54Talk to you soon.
01:55I will see you this weekend.
01:57And I clicked play.
01:58Patrick, this is the biggest day ever.
02:03You and Emily are now engaged to be married.
02:07That is the coolest thing ever.
02:10Your mom and dad must be over the hills because I know how excited I am.
02:15And now we're going to have a wedding in Las Vegas.
02:18It is wonderful, wonderful news.
02:21Put your arms around her for me.
02:23That's a beautiful ring you got her.
02:25And we will talk very, very soon.
02:27Okay, my boy, you take care.
02:29Bye-bye.
02:30Oh, my gosh, Jeff.
02:32And it's like, it's not what I was expecting.
02:34I was thinking it was just going to be like a little reminder of his voice.
02:38And I was so upset all day yesterday.
02:41It was so hard.
02:42I was bursting into tears, which is uncharacteristic for me.
02:47Sure.
02:48I like to stay as positive and happy as possible.
02:50And my wife came downstairs when I was working and I was really struggling.
02:55And she said, Jeff, now you have this forever.
02:58Like, you have this moment.
03:00And it was like the coolest thing.
03:01And it became this such a positive thing now.
03:03And isn't it interesting that it kind of pops into your life almost when you need it, those things, right?
03:09Those little signs, you know?
03:10And everybody has seen them.
03:12Donnie, I know that, you know, you've mentioned times when you're having a tough day or whatever.
03:17And then all of a sudden you'll kind of get a sign.
03:20Always.
03:20I mean, this is actually your uncle's voice, right?
03:24Like, what a beautiful, beautiful thing.
03:27Thank goodness that you're not deleting all those voice emails as they come through.
03:31And I won't play the other one because I was like, this one's got to be a goofball one.
03:34And it was right after my sister asked me to be my nephew's godfather.
03:40And he was talking about how important that job is and how great that job is.
03:45And, you know, he was the only person on earth to call me Patrick, which is my middle name.
03:48Patrick.
03:49And that's how he started.
03:50I didn't understand what he said.
03:52Every call.
03:52Yeah, I didn't get that either.
03:53Every call.
03:54So right when I heard it, I was like, wow, I haven't been called that in so long.
03:57That is so sweet.
03:58And sometimes we just need that.
04:00Sometimes we, like, you know, it was interesting.
04:02My friend Jane sent me a text last night.
04:04She came across something from her mom.
04:06Oh.
04:07And her mom has passed away years ago.
04:09You know, but she said, I just, I've been really weepy because I came across this.
04:13And I said, it's really interesting that you went through the exact same thing yesterday.
04:17Because I said, Jane, like, sometimes it feels so good to feel that hurt of loss.
04:26Because it shows that you had someone in your life that you loved and treasured so deeply.
04:33It felt so good after I really cried.
04:36Because all day, well, not all day at work.
04:38But towards the end of work, I was, like, holding it back.
04:40I didn't cry in the car, right?
04:41And I got home and I just, like, exploded.
04:44And it felt so good, for lack of a better term.
04:46And it felt like, man, this is so beautiful.
04:49Exactly as you said, Andy.
04:50To have something to miss.
04:51To have something that loved me so much.
04:53Not everybody gets that.
04:54No.
04:54You know?
04:55So.
04:55God bless, Jeff.
04:56I'm going to keep that forever.
04:58I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
04:59I don't know.
05:00I don't know.
05:00I don't know.
05:00I don't know.
05:00I don't know.
05:01I don't know.
05:01I don't know.
