And the students jumped in to save her
Transcript
00:00A group of Mississippi middle schoolers saved their entire bus.
00:05This is incredible.
00:06I don't know about you guys, middle school bus.
00:09I weirdly, like, went to a middle school that was way too far away for one year.
00:13Yeah.
00:14Because they redistricted after that year to, like, be like, okay, these kids do not need to be driving, like,
00:1945 minutes.
00:19But that happens, right?
00:20Where your kid is on the bus for, like, an hour or something every day.
00:25We drove by a middle school to get to my middle school that I ended up going to later.
00:28The point was, you're doing anything but paying attention to what's going on outside of the school bus.
00:34For sure.
00:34Especially now, right?
00:35They've got their AirPods in, their headphones, right?
00:38They're on their phones.
00:39Well, get this.
00:40A group of middle school students acted quickly to prevent a school bus crash when their driver experienced a medical
00:47emergency.
00:48Yikes.
00:49Yeah.
00:49Leah Taylor is the driver.
00:50She was behind the wheel when she blacked out from an asthma attack.
00:54Oh, my gosh.
00:55While transporting about 40 students to Hancock Middle School in Mississippi.
00:59Wow.
00:59That's when 12-year-old Jackson took control of the steering wheel as the bus began to swerve.
01:07So, obviously, these kids are like, whoa, whoa, whoa, what's going on?
01:09Students worked together, including Darius Clark, Kaylee Clark.
01:13They were actually able to bring the bus to a stop on a highway medium.
01:17Oh, my gosh.
01:18Another student called 911.
01:20Other classmates, including Destiny Cornelius and Mackenzie Finch, assisted the driver by administering her medication that she had on her
01:30person and contacting the school officials.
01:33So, this is just like a real team effort.
01:36For sure.
01:36Every kid is taking care of some angle, whether it's calling the school, calling the authorities, helping the driver, pulling
01:43the bus over.
01:44Emergency responders arrived moments later and took over care.
01:49Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, and the bus driver made a full recovery.
01:53Oh, amazing.
01:54School officials praised the students' heroic actions, right?
01:57You said highway median.
01:58So, imagine how fast that bus is going.
02:00Right.
02:00You know?
02:00Right.
02:01And they're on, like, a highway.
02:03That's big enough to have a median, yeah.
02:05So, they're doing 60 miles an hour, yeah.
02:08They're doing 60, 65, plus other cars on the road.
02:09Right, right.
02:10It's not a local back road.
02:11Right.
02:11Wow.
02:13That's so.
02:13That's awesome.
02:14You know, it's those moments.
02:17Like, you know there are people in your lives now.
02:18As adults, like, you look around, there are people that are doers that are like, okay, if I'm in a
02:23bind, that's the person I'm going to ask, even if we're not best friends.
02:27Right.
02:27Because that person is going to show up because they always seem to know the right thing to do.
02:30But it starts that young, right?
02:32Like, it starts that young with the kids that are just, like, just jumping into action.
02:38So admirable.
02:39Amazing.
02:40So, they were recognized at their school pep rally.
02:42Oh, yay.
02:42And they're scheduled to attend a celebratory lunch in their honor.
02:46Oh, that's awesome.
02:48Incredible.
