The United Nations has condemned Israel after Israeli forces entered the UNRWA compound in East Jerusalem without authorization, removed the UN flag, and seized equipment and documents. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the compound remains inviolable under international law, citing the International Court of Justice ruling reaffirming UN protections.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini called the raid a direct violation of UN obligations, warning it sets a dangerous global precedent. Israeli officials claim the entry was related to unpaid property taxes—an argument the UN rejects, noting the site remains protected under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.
The compound has been closed since early 2024 after Israeli authorities ordered UNRWA to halt operations inside Israel. The incident comes amid ongoing tensions, restrictions on UNRWA, and repeated strikes on its facilities in Gaza.
