The UN has sharply criticised Israel’s army chief after he declared the “yellow line” from the Trump peace plan as the new Gaza border. The spokesperson said the move goes against the spirit and the letter of the Trump plan and warned against any unilateral change to Gaza’s borders. The UN added it remains deeply worried by regional escalation and urged all sides to return to ceasefire commitments.
00:00Yesterday I asked you about the situation in the border area between Thailand and Cambodia.
00:05Obviously the tension escalates today.
00:10Both sides accuse each other, fighting, attack the civilian villages.
00:17Has the Secretary General ever contacted anybody over this issue?
00:22And obviously I think he's following the situation.
00:26And what is the latest response?
00:27Yeah, I mean, we continue to be worried about the escalation, the rhetoric and what is going on on the ground.
00:34There was a framework that was signed in Kuala Lumpur.
00:40This is part of the efforts by the United States and by Malaysia to try to have a return to peace between the two neighbors.
00:50It is essential that both Cambodia and Thailand return to the letter and to the framework of that, to the letter and the intent of that framework.
01:01Have they ever reached out for the secretariat?
01:04No, as you know, we always stand ready for good offices should both parties request it.
01:10All right. Another location, Gaza.
01:13It seems that there would be soon a discussion on the phase two of the ceasefire.
01:20Has the UN have any role or had any discussion with any parties on the ground?
01:25I mean, we continue to be very much engaged with the relevant parties.
01:35I mean, as you recall, the Secretary General was in Doha not too long ago, had conversations with the emir and the prime minister, foreign minister.
01:45We know the U.S. ambassador, Mike Waltz, was in Jerusalem.
01:52He met with Ramiz Al-Abkaroff, our deputy special coordinator.
01:59Mr. Fletcher has had contacts with the U.S.
02:02So we continue to be in contact.
02:05But we are not directly involved in the negotiations and discussions on the implementation of phase two.
02:14And in the term of Gaza, a couple of days ago, it's been reported that IDF chief of the general staff said that the yellow line, the Trump ceasefire plan, the yellow line, is now the new border of Gaza.
02:28It's actually a large chunk of land outside the yellow line.
02:33What's the...
02:34First of all, that seems to me to go against the spirit and the letter of the Trump peace plan.
02:42And we firmly stand against any change of the borders of Gaza and Israel.
02:48So when we're talking about Gaza in this room, it's the Gaza, the original one.
