Ukrainian Soldier Captured in Donetsk Says Unit Abandoned Without Food

A Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier captured in the surrounded city of Dimitrov in the Donetsk region has described what he says was a critical situation inside encircled Ukrainian positions.

Sergei Ionov, taken prisoner by Russian forces from the 5th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade of the 51st Combined Arms Army, claimed that Ukrainian units were left without food supplies or rotation, with commanders allegedly abandoning soldiers in garages for several days.

In video released by Russia’s Defence Ministry, Ionov says provisions were not delivered and troops were left without support. He recounts being discovered by Russian servicemen after several days, stating that he chose to surrender to survive.

Reuters was not able to independently verify the claims. The video was distributed by the Russian Ministry of Defence.
