00:00:00All right, and back here, joining me now, the host position, of course, the man who's held five world titles and I'm proud to say also is a friend, Ray Leonard. Good seeing you again, buddy.
00:00:11How you doing, JB?
00:00:12Not bad at all. Still no marks on that face at all, huh?
00:00:15Well, my wife takes care of that.
00:00:18That means you're teaching her how to box.
00:00:19Let's set the stage for the upcoming bout, James Toney and Roy Jones.
00:00:23Now, many people talk about Roy Jones being a mirror image in many ways of yourself.
00:00:28Size up Roy Jones first.
00:00:30I think that's a very flattering comment to make that Roy Jones resembles me.
00:00:35But I think Roy Jones has his own style.
00:00:37Roy Jones is a young man with extraordinary talent, incredible hand speed, foot speed.
00:00:42I think his power is very deceptive and not really appreciated.
00:00:45He's very explosive, especially inside the left hook that he was able to knock out tape with was just incredible.
00:00:52I think he's a guy who's getting stronger and better.
00:00:54So many people, the boxing aficionados, if you will, split down the middle almost in terms of who will win this fight because Roy Jones is such an unknown commodity.
00:01:03The fact that his resume is not as stellar as that of James Toney, do you think that will hurt him at all tonight, Ray?
00:01:09I don't particularly think so.
00:01:10I think with Roy Jones and James Toney, both men are capable of defeating the other.
00:01:14I mean, what you have in James Toney is a guy with big-time attitude, a guy who's a throwback to the old-time fighters.
00:01:20He uses his shoulders.
00:01:22He's very powerful and he's very quick.
00:01:24He's very sly, very crafty.
00:01:25The way that Roy Jones can win this fight if he boxes and not decide to slug with James Toney, stay on the outside and utilize his hands and foot speed.
00:01:34With James Toney, James has to make Roy get exchanged punch for punch.
00:01:38And that way would be in James Toney's favor.
00:01:41And very quickly, the experience that James Toney brings into the ring, he's able to adjust to no matter what the opponent's style is.
00:01:48That is true, JB, but I also feel that what's going to make a difference is the fact that James Toney has major problems making the weight.
00:01:56So it depends on what is taken out of him, which gives Roy Jones the edge.
00:02:00Before I let you go, I've got to ask you, your prediction on tonight?
00:02:03I say in the early rounds, it probably will be James Toney, but later down the stretch, it will be Roy Jones because, again, that weight deficit is a problem.
00:02:12All right, I've got to find out your beauty seekers, buddy.
00:02:13My wife.
00:02:15All right, I'll take that one to heart, too.
00:02:16Good seeing you again, Ray.
00:02:18All right, so the main event is coming up and we heard Ray's thoughts on that one.
00:02:21Well, folks, this is the one that the people have been talking about as we get set for James Toney and Roy Jones Jr.
00:02:33It is one of the most exciting weight divisions in boxing.
00:02:39A mix of power and quickness, the middleweights have provided by fans with a century's worth of magical moments and memories.
00:02:48There was a broiling July heat in Colma, California, when Stanley Ketchel defeated Billy Papte in a 20-round unanimous decision.
00:02:55And the day in 1912, when an American named George Klaus traveled to France and captured a vacant title from Frenchman George Carpentier.
00:03:06While the 20s may be remembered as the golden age of sport, for the middleweights, this decade would represent the battle between Henry Graib and Mickey Walker in one of boxing's most vicious fights ever.
00:03:16As Americans were coping with their stock losses, Marcel Thiel was winning by disqualification over Lou Brulard and Freddie Steele by unanimous decision over Babe Briscoe.
00:03:29In the next decade, Henry Armstrong, the only fighter to hold three world titles simultaneously, featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight, would fall short of winning his fourth title against Semperino Garcia in a 10-round draw.
00:03:42Later in the 40s, fight fans were treated to the Zale Graziano Classics.
00:03:48Zale was victorious in the first of their three meetings, but here in the rematch, very rare home movies show Graziano evening the score with a six-round knockout.
00:03:58A year later, in typical Zale Graziano fashion, Rocky would once again lose his precious title to the Man of Steel.
00:04:04One man symbolized boxing in the 50s, Sugar Ray Robinson.
00:04:13There were his six battles with the raging bull, Jake LaMotta.
00:04:16His dramatic victory over Randy Turpin.
00:04:20And his come-from-behind victory over Rocky Graziano.
00:04:24Even in defeat against welterweight champ Carmen Basilio, pound for pound, Sugar Ray Robinson was the best in boxing.
00:04:37The turbulent 60s were befitting for the brutal middleweight war between Dick Tiger and Gene Fulmer.
00:04:43And the three grueling bouts between Nino Benvenuti and Emil Griffith.
00:04:51As the 70s began, so did Carlos Monzon's nine-year reign of the middleweight division, beginning with his 12th-round victory over Nino Benvenuti.
00:05:01The marvelous one, Marvin Hagler, ruled the 80s.
00:05:04He's against the ropes, he's on rubber legs.
00:05:07Until he faced Sugar Ray Leonard in one of the greatest upsets in boxing history.
00:05:11Leonard fighting off the ropes.
00:05:15Now in the 90s, we have two exceptional and undefeated middleweight champions.
00:05:20James Toney, the IBF super middleweight champ.
00:05:23He is out!
00:05:25And former middleweight champion.
00:05:30Even in defeat against welterweight champ Carmen Basilio, pound for pound, Sugar Ray Robinson was the best in boxing.
00:05:37The turbulent 60s were befitting for the brutal middleweight war between Dick Tiger and Gene Fulmer.
00:05:47And the three grueling bouts between Nino Benvenuti and Emil Griffith.
00:05:53As the 70s began, so did Carlos Monzon's nine-year reign of the middleweight division, beginning with his 12th-round victory over Nino Benvenuti.
00:06:01The marvelous one, Marvin Hagler, ruled the 80s.
00:06:07He's against the ropes, he's on rubber legs.
00:06:09Until he faced Sugar Ray Leonard in one of the greatest upsets in boxing history.
00:06:13Leonard fighting off the ropes.
00:06:17Now in the 90s, we have two exceptional and undefeated middleweight champions.
00:06:22James Toney, the IBF super middleweight champ.
00:06:25He is out!
00:06:26And former middleweight title holder, Roy Jones Jr.
00:06:31It's billed as the fight of the year.
00:06:34It has the potential to be the fight of the decade.
00:06:36Rarely in the sport of boxing do two undefeated champions, two superb athletes, two warriors in the prime of their careers come together to face one another for the championship of the world.
00:06:58Tonight, TVKO presents this very matchup as James Toney defends his perfect record and IBF super middleweight title against former middleweight champion Roy Jones Jr.
00:07:18And it's all brought to you by Beachwood-aged Budweiser.
00:07:21It's always been true.
00:07:23This Bud's for you.
00:07:24Well, excitement and enthusiasm are building here in the MGM Grand Garden as the main event is just moments away.
00:07:34Boxing fans are anxiously anticipating a fight that many feel has the potential to be one of the best in recent memory.
00:07:42And the auditorium is nearly full as the folks have heard an awful lot about this one and the boxing purists are looking forward to it.
00:07:51And welcome once again to TVKO's presentation of the main event between James Lights Out Tony, the current IBF super middleweight champion, and Roy Jones Jr., the former IBF middleweight champion.
00:08:02He relinquished that title to move up in weight and the challenge for the belt that Tony currently holds.
00:08:07You know, folks, this is indeed a rarity in boxing.
00:08:10Two undefeated world champions willing to risk everything in pursuit of the best available competition.
00:08:16And, of course, the moniker as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing today.
00:08:21I know the time for talking is over.
00:08:22It is now time for action.
00:08:24So let's take you back downstairs to Gil Clancy, Larry Merchant, and Jim Lampley.
00:08:28All right.
00:08:29Thanks very much, JB.
00:08:30Just a few more words.
00:08:31Moments ago, you heard James Brown interview Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:08:33At the end of the interview, he asked him what would happen in the fight.
00:08:37And Ray suggested the early rounds might belong to James Tony, the late rounds to Roy Jones.
00:08:42But as far as picking a winner is concerned, he hedged.
00:08:45No slap at Ray.
00:08:46That's pretty typical of experts throughout the sport of boxing.
00:08:49Because, Larry Merchant, one of the marks of what a great fight this is, is that so many people in the sport don't seem to have a real handle, Gil's one of them,
00:08:58on exactly what is going to happen once that first bell sounds.
00:09:01Why are people so indecisive as to what is going to happen here?
00:09:05What's the reason?
00:09:07Three words.
00:09:08Roy Jones Jr.
00:09:10We don't know up to this second whether he's a superstar or a fraud.
00:09:16We do know about James Tony.
00:09:18He's a bull outside of the ring.
00:09:21Outside of the ring, he's a raging, angry bull.
00:09:24Inside of the ring, he's a very precise, deadly, well-schooled bullfighter.
00:09:31And as a champion, he's been everything a champion should be, taking on all comers, the toughest guy, and seeming to get better and better with each and every fight.
00:09:40Roy Jones, meanwhile, has avoided all of the toughest opponents.
00:09:44But, to back up his conviction, he did give up that 160-pound championship for this opportunity.
00:09:51It does mean something to him.
00:09:54And the way I see it, he's like a gambler who has collected a pile of chips, slowly but surely.
00:10:00And now he's pushing all those chips into the table on one roll of the dice.
00:10:06His problem is that James Tony has been playing for high stakes before so often, he almost represents the house.
00:10:13Indeed, a vast edge in experience here on Tony's side.
00:10:17But there are other edges which experts see being in Roy Jones' corner.
00:10:22For more on that, let's break the fight down, Gil, into five categories, and you give us your analysis as to where the advantage lies in each category.
00:10:30As far as punching power is concerned, I think it's dead even.
00:10:33Jones can get you out with one punch a lot better than James Tony, but Tony can put his power punches together better than Roy Jones.
00:10:41Quickness, there's a big edge for Roy Jones.
00:10:43Hand and foot speed, he's like quicksilver in the ring.
00:10:46You don't know what's going to happen.
00:10:47As far as defense goes, I have to give it to Roy Jones.
00:10:51I've never seen him hit with a solid punch, so therefore I have to give him the edge on defense.
00:10:56Experience, a big edge for James Tony.
00:10:58He's been in a lot of tough fights, and he's come through in the clutch.
00:11:02And also the intangibles to James Tony.
00:11:04He has a tremendous will to win, finds a way to win under adverse conditions.
00:11:09Experience and intangibles, those are hugely important categories, but you put three check marks in Roy Jones Jr.'s column.
00:11:15Does that mean that Jones should win the fight?
00:11:18I don't know.
00:11:20Well, all right, let's find out.
00:11:25Tale of the tape.
00:11:27And you can see that James Tony weighed in at 167, Roy Jones at 168.
00:11:31They're similar in age, similar in height, similar in reach, but the big story.
00:11:35James Tony supposedly went to bed last night, eight hours after weighing in at 167, and weighed 183.
00:11:42Tonight, before leaving his dressing room to come into the ring, he stood on a scale.
00:11:47And you can see that if this scale is accurate, James told us the truth.
00:11:52He weighed 184 pounds, 17 pounds over yesterday's weigh-in level as he got ready to come into the ring tonight.
00:12:01That's an astonishing rise in weight, Gil.
00:12:03I don't know if any young fighter has ever had to do anything like that.
00:12:10Take a look at the punch stat numbers here.
00:12:12I don't know what these mean, except you can see that Tony is a busier, constantly busier and more efficient fighter.
00:12:21Jabs, Jones uses the jab mainly to set up his hooks.
00:12:28He's not really interested in doing any serious business with the jab, but it's his hooks that will determine the outcome of this fight.
00:12:38Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:12:42James Tony and Roy Jones Jr. will box tonight using the rules of the International Boxing Federation.
00:12:4712 rounds, there is no standing A count, no three-knockdown rule.
00:12:52You cannot be saved by the bell in any round, including the last round.
00:12:56Only the referee can stop the fight, and in case a cut is caused by an accidental headbutt,
00:13:00and that cut causes the fight to be stopped, we go to the scorecards if the six rounds have been completed.
00:13:06Before that, it's a technical draw.
00:13:08Jim.
00:13:11Packed towels at ringside here at the MGM Grand.
00:13:14And Roy Jones Jr. chooses to enter in a mock tuxedo.
00:13:20You see the designation there, former IVF middleweight champion.
00:13:25He gave up that championship, Larry, for the right to come up eight pounds
00:13:29and challenge for James Tony's super middleweight title.
00:13:33Well, for him, this is his entire career.
00:13:36It's a fight he's been aiming for since he got robbed of that decision at the Seoul Olympics.
00:13:42I call his style, Gil, as a kind of a brilliant amateur.
00:13:52He can get away with doing things because of his quickness that very, very few fighters can,
00:13:58sort of like Muhammad Ali or Hector Camacho, a few others I can name.
00:14:03One thing we knew about Ali was he had the right stuff inside when all was said and done.
00:14:09That's what we have to find out about this man tonight.
00:14:11Well, that's what we're going to find out, Larry.
00:14:14Roy Jones himself doesn't know what he's going to do in that ring.
00:14:17He's very, very unorthodox, but he has great balance.
00:14:20He's a great athlete, and things just happen for him.
00:14:23Well, you know, they say that the punch that hurts you is the punch that you don't see,
00:14:50and he throws his punches from such odd angles that he can nail you,
00:14:54and you just don't see the punch.
00:15:01And now Jones may be forced to play a little bit of a waiting game in the ring,
00:15:05but here comes James Toney.
00:15:08We've got to talk about that weight.
00:15:10I've never heard of anything like this, particularly for a young athlete.
00:15:14When I was playing football, I knew of guys who had lost eight pounds in a workout in the severe heat.
00:15:21They get it all back by the afternoon.
00:15:24But to put on 16 or 17 pounds in such a short period of time, can it do him any good?
00:15:29I think it can do him a lot more harm than good.
00:15:32I think you're supposed to be your most efficient weight,
00:15:35especially when you're fighting a guy that has a lot of speed.
00:15:38You don't want to give up any kind of speed,
00:15:39and putting that much weight back on can certainly slow him up.
00:15:42He may look like he's fighting with cement shoes on.
00:15:45You know, Ray Leonard said an interesting thing before.
00:15:47The conventional wisdom has been that Jones had to get Tony Hurt in trouble early in the fight
00:15:53because Tony would come on.
00:15:56But now because of this weight situation, we don't know which way it's going to go.
00:16:00Well, I know that Jones is always dangerous very, very early.
00:16:05I've seen a few of his fights, and he lands that left hook from way outside,
00:16:09which is an unorthodox thing to do because he does leave himself a little bit open.
00:16:13But the first time he hits the opponent with that left hook,
00:16:18you can see the surprise on their face like, what the heck is this?
00:16:22You saw Tony waiting briefly as he refused to enter the ring
00:16:27until the public address system would play his entry music.
00:16:30Now, here he comes.
00:16:34IBM super middleweight champion James Tony,
00:16:37since he won the middleweight title for Michael Dunn in 1991,
00:16:41this has been the most active major champion in the sport of boxing, Larry.
00:16:47Yeah, and that's why he's gotten better and better.
00:16:49The only champion I know of who's been really active during his reign,
00:16:53and the other champion is Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:16:58In his prime, when he was great, he kept active fighting fights in Mexico
00:17:04none of us have even ever heard of,
00:17:06and it's paid off for him, and it's paid off for Tony so far.
00:17:10One more footnote on the long battle to trim down to the 168-pound weight limit
00:17:16and then the massive weight gain in the 30 hours since.
00:17:20According to Nevada State Athletic Commission Dr. Flip Homansky,
00:17:23rapid fluid loss followed by rapid fluid intake
00:17:27would make someone more vulnerable to bruising and cutting.
00:17:31So we'll have to watch and see if that holds true for Tony tonight.
00:17:35James Toney's record in the ring, 44 wins, two draws, 29 KOs.
00:17:40We've seen him win from every conceivable circumstance
00:17:44by come-from-behind knockout, by come-from-behind decision,
00:17:48by early knockout, by late knockout, you name it, he's done it.
00:17:54And now let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffett
00:17:57for the pre-fight introductions.

00:18:49and the three judges assigned are Glenn Hamada,
00:18:53John Stewart, and Jerry Roth.
00:18:55And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action,
00:18:59working for the 104th time in a world title bout,
00:19:04referee Richard Steele.
00:19:06And now, ladies and gentlemen, from the MGM Grand Garden,
00:19:15here at the MGM Grand Hotel, Casino, and Theme Park of Las Vegas, Nevada,
00:19:20somebody's O must go.
00:19:22Ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready to rumble!
00:19:2712 rounds of boxing for the super middleweight championship of the world.
00:19:39Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner,
00:19:42wearing the white trunks with gold trim,
00:19:44and weighing in at 168 pounds.
00:19:47This 1988 Olympic silver medalist has a professional record of 26-0,
00:19:5323 by knockout victory.
00:19:56Tonight, he steps up from the middleweight division,
00:19:59where he has already captured a world title,
00:20:02and puts his perfect record on the line.
00:20:04Ladies and gentlemen, from Pensacola, Florida,
00:20:07introducing the challenger and former middleweight champion of the world,
00:20:14Roy Jones Jr.
00:20:22Yeah!
00:20:30And his opponent crossed the ring, fighting out of the red corner,
00:20:33wearing black, and weighing in at 167 pounds.
00:20:37He brings his outstanding record into the ring tonight,
00:20:41of 44 victories without a loss.
00:20:44He has scored 29 KOs and has two draws.
00:20:47And while compiling that record, he has captured two world titles.
00:20:50Ladies and gentlemen, from Ann Arbor, Michigan,
00:20:54presenting the two-time world champion
00:20:56and reigning super middleweight champion of the world,
00:21:02James,
00:21:03the White South,
00:21:06Tony!
00:21:22All right, I spoke to both fighters in the dressing room.
00:21:24I'm cautioning you again.
00:21:27Obey my commands at all times.
00:21:28Shake hands, good luck.
00:21:30Jim, when we get unbeaten champions meet like this,
00:21:34we often get a kind of creative friction
00:21:36that bursts out into the pure flame.
00:21:40That's what we're looking for tonight.
00:21:43One quick note, Gil and Larry.
00:21:45I was told late this afternoon
00:21:46by a source I trust from Roy Jones Jr.'s camp
00:21:49that he hurt his right hand in sparring a month ago,
00:21:52has not hit the heavy bag with the right hand
00:21:54for more than a month,
00:21:55has not thrown a power shot
00:21:57at a sparring partner with the right hand
00:21:59for more than a month.
00:22:00So he comes into the ring tonight
00:22:02with the right hand,
00:22:03a mystery to him and those around him.
00:22:07Putting more and more emphasis on the left hook
00:22:09that does the most damage for him.
00:22:12He's been throwing triple left hooks in sparring
00:22:14to make up for the absence of the right hand.
00:22:16And he throws a right hand there,
00:22:19seemingly with conviction.
00:22:23And Jim, you notice when the James Toney stalks an opponent
00:22:29or when he jams,
00:22:31he has the tendency to drop that right hand,
00:22:33which can be very, very dangerous
00:22:34against a good left hooker like Roy Jones Jr.
00:22:37There's that quick left hook again
00:22:42from an unorthodox angle.
00:22:49Tony has blocked all of those punches.
00:22:52Jones short with the right hand there.
00:22:54Tony looking confident,
00:22:56if a bit defensive so far.
00:22:58Willing to wait and see what Jones has got
00:23:01here at the outset.
00:23:02He's keeping his hands up
00:23:03and he's putting pressure on Roy Jones.
00:23:12And again, you can see the quickness of Jones,
00:23:15that side-to-side movement.
00:23:17Jabbing and hooking with the left hand.
00:23:20Only a couple of right-hand shots so far by Jones.
00:23:23Nothing has landed.
00:23:25Tony has been cautious
00:23:26and measured in his approach.
00:23:29Right hand misses for James.
00:23:31Buncher, get out.
00:23:32Buncher, get out.
00:23:33Double left hook by Jones.
00:23:40Right hand was a glancing blow.
00:24:01James Tony told us
00:24:02he would be able to counter
00:24:03because he didn't think
00:24:05that Jones would be able to resist
00:24:06taking the lead in the fight.
00:24:09Up to this point,
00:24:10Jones has been doing
00:24:11all of the leading.
00:24:15There's a quick right hand by Jones
00:24:17and it looked okay there.
00:24:18There's a good left hand by Owlman and his Manor-Hales,
00:24:19Joseph and Sterling.
00:24:20げet.
00:24:21Come on.
00:24:22ε
00:24:35To get out.
00:24:36Jones' press
00:24:37Jones' quickness, a factor here in round one.
00:24:41time to get out jones's quickness a factor here in round one he's been able
00:24:48to double and triple up with the left hook
00:24:52when you catch the hook i'll come back with your hook catch the hook come back with your hook
00:25:13and keep cutting the ring off off
00:25:19make you miss them shots especially them right hand you can twist on the right hand count on the right hand
00:25:27but keep that hand getting in already let's go sit that hook up you'll catch him clean sooner
00:25:31later way to work deep breath okay we're ready so you stop pulling baby way to work way to work
00:25:42you heard bill miller talking to james tony watch the left hook just watch the left hook and when
00:25:53you catch it or duck it throw your own left hook good advice skill absolutely if he could nail jones
00:25:59if jones misses that left hook do an awful lot of damage and there's this tony trying to get off that
00:26:04big left hook it was blocked by jones tony looking like he wants to open up a little bit more in this
00:26:10round after an exceedingly cautious first
00:26:14don't hold him don't break step back step back
00:26:24couple of body shots by jones one sounded like it landed on the cuff for jim
00:26:32and again tony carries that right hand across his chest he's not protecting his chin he got it up there though
00:26:40and jones managed to thunder one left hook behind tony's guard but
00:26:44most of these punches being blocked on the gloves by james tony
00:26:49but again if he throws seven and two get through he's still scoring some points
00:26:53tony has to punch back
00:26:57tony hasn't found many openings and there was the quickness of jones again he made tony miss
00:27:01and nailed him with two of those unorthodox punches they come from all angles
00:27:06right hand to the body by jones finally james tony gets through with a left hook to the chest of jones
00:27:11that drove him back into the corner
00:27:15good right hand lead by jones
00:27:21again jones makes a lot of very tactical errors but he has such fast reflexes
00:27:26that he can get away with making mistakes
00:27:30that quickness fast hands
00:27:37leaping with the left hook
00:27:41open the glove as he threw the right hand of the body jones hurt the right hand against bernard hopkins a few fights back
00:27:48push to get out
00:27:55don't hold him
00:28:03jones hurt the right hand
00:28:04jones hurt the right hand against bernard hopkins a few fights back
00:28:06push to get out don't hold him
00:28:10jones hurt the right hand
00:28:17jones hurt the right hand
00:28:27jones hurt the right hand
00:28:29jones hurt the right hand
00:28:31jones hurt the right hand
00:28:32jones hurt the right hand
00:28:36jones hurt the right hand
00:28:37jones hurt the right hand
00:28:38jones hurt the right hand
00:28:39jones hurt the right hand
00:28:40jones hurt the right hand
00:28:41jones hurt the right hand
00:28:42jones hurt the right hand
00:28:43jones hurt the right hand
00:28:45And the left hook got behind the guard, Gil.
00:28:48Jones wobbled Tony just slightly with that left hook.
00:28:55Boom!
00:29:03We're going to tighten up a little bit.
00:29:06You know, I know that.
00:29:08We've got the short-knots shots up a little bit.
00:29:11You can catch him when he comes in.
00:29:14Especially when you're twisting with the right hand back with the left hook.
00:29:24Here's the flurry at the end of the round by Roy Jones.
00:29:27None of those was a clean punch, but they are scoring punches.
00:29:31They will count in his favor.
00:29:32His quickness is decisive through the first two rounds.
00:29:37On his head, let's go.
00:29:39Keep the control just back there.
00:29:41Keep the control.
00:29:43Stop pulling.
00:29:44Stop pulling.
00:29:45Let's go, baby.
00:29:47Big disparity in punch output in rounds one and two.
00:29:50Would you tell James Tony to step up the activity level, Gil?
00:29:53He's going to have to do something.
00:29:55He can't walk in and walk in without throwing punches.
00:29:58Low blows by Jones.
00:29:59Low blows by Jones.
00:30:00Steele didn't say anything.
00:30:05And still the edge in quickness is decisive, as Larry put it.
00:30:09Quickness and reflex, Jim.
00:30:11I mean, he makes Tony miss, and he's so quick countering.
00:30:14Get out the road.
00:30:15Get out the road.
00:30:16Get out.
00:30:17Showboating by Jones.
00:30:21The attempt to fade, I think.
00:30:23Left hook, and down goes Tony.
00:30:27You know, his seat never hit the canvas.
00:30:30They're going to call it a knockdown anyway.
00:30:32I agree, Larry.
00:30:33I don't think it was a knockdown.
00:30:36He wobbled back, but he did not go down.
00:30:39Randy Johnson knocked him down in 1991.
00:30:42This, if it is officially scored as a knockdown,
00:30:44is the second time in Tony's career that he's been down.
00:30:48Proud on its feet.
00:30:50Jones with plenty of time left in the third.
00:30:53Up to this point, it looks like that added weight
00:30:56that they put on James Tony is an albatross around his neck
00:31:01because he's very, very slow.
00:31:03Well, maybe it's Jones.
00:31:04He's just that fast.
00:31:06But he's being completely outspent in this fight so far.
00:31:11Jones looks fast against everybody,
00:31:14but he certainly looked faster against Tony
00:31:17than some might have suspected.
00:31:20Good counter by Tony.
00:31:31Jones says, come on.
00:31:33That was Tony's best punch of the fight.
00:31:35Before Jones coming and nothing happened.
00:31:46Right hand lead by Jones.
00:31:48He wants to get out.
00:31:51Unorthodoxy playing in his favor now.
00:31:54He's fighting with so much confidence, Jim.
00:31:57Right, step back, step back.
00:32:04Well, if he didn't use the right hand in sparring,
00:32:06he's using it here and so far fairly effectively,
00:32:09although most of the heavy metal has come from the left.
00:32:12Yes, but he has, again, he has thrown that right hand
00:32:14to set up the left hook.
00:32:16Sweeping left hook by Tony.
00:32:17Come on, Percy, get out of here.
00:32:19And more quickness inside from Roy Jones.
00:32:23Good defense there by Tony, who was able to duck and slip.
00:32:39Yeah, but it's okay to say no, no, no.
00:32:41But they're still scoring points for Jones.
00:32:43All right, he's having that right hand.
00:32:46He's just a little off the mark.
00:32:48If we can get it on the mark,
00:32:49he'll take the right hand away from you.
00:32:50He's trying, brother.
00:32:51All right.
00:32:52Just a little off the mark.
00:32:53If we can get it on the mark,
00:32:54he'll take the right hand away from you.
00:32:55He's trying, brother.
00:32:56All right.
00:32:57Just a little off the mark.
00:32:58If we can get it on the mark,
00:32:59if we can get it on the mark,
00:33:00he'll take the right hand away from you.
00:33:01He's trying, brother.
00:33:02All right.
00:33:03Just a little off the mark.
00:33:04But when you're going in, jab him,
00:33:05double up on the jab.
00:33:06All right.
00:33:07I wouldn't fuck.
00:33:08Here's part of the debate going on with hand gestures
00:33:12and fists.
00:33:28We don't see from that angle whether Jones indeed went down.
00:33:31Perhaps we'll have another angle that we can see it.
00:33:34Here it'll tell us right now.
00:33:36You see his behind never hit the canvas, Gil.
00:33:41Absolutely.
00:33:42I did not think it was a knockdown.
00:33:44He did stagger back, but he didn't go down.
00:33:46Harold Letterman.
00:33:47Let's open Harold quickly.
00:33:48Why might that have been scored a knockdown, Harold?
00:33:50Jim, if the ropes are holding you up,
00:33:53if the ropes wouldn't have been there
00:33:54and you would have hit the canvas,
00:33:55that's a knockdown under the rules.
00:33:56So in your view, is that a knockdown?
00:33:57Absolutely.
00:33:58A knockdown for sure.
00:33:59All right.
00:34:00Round four begins.
00:34:01And given the knockdown,
00:34:02you've now got at least the possibility
00:34:04that Tony is four points behind on all three scorecards.
00:34:08Not necessarily, but it's possible.
00:34:10Well, he's digging himself a big hole right now.
00:34:13We've seen him come back in the past
00:34:15from bad cuts, et cetera, et cetera,
00:34:17but he can't get too far behind
00:34:20with this Will of the Whiskies in there with.
00:34:22You heard Bill Miller tell him to keep throwing the right hand,
00:34:25and he was trying it there, but he missed wide.
00:34:28In my opinion, he should be concentrating on the body.
00:34:31Another left hook by Jones.
00:34:36That one didn't stun Tony,
00:34:37but it prevented him from throwing anything in return.
00:34:41Tony just not able to counter effectively, Gil,
00:34:44except for one time so far.
00:34:46One, two, three, go!
00:34:48One, two, three, go!
00:34:49One, two, three, go!
00:34:50One, two, go!
00:34:53One, three, go!
00:34:54One, two, go!
00:34:55One, two, go!
00:34:56Solid left hook there.
00:34:57Tony talking to Jones.
00:34:58Again what's talking doesn't do you a bit of good,
00:34:59and the other guy's piling up points.
00:35:01Is he ever?
00:35:12Tony just looks like he can't get off,
00:35:14whether it's Jones' movement that's bothering him
00:35:16or with the extra weight that's bothering him,
00:35:18something's bothering him because he traps Jones
00:35:22and gets beats to the punch time after time.
00:35:24Well, there was a good counter right,
00:35:26and he came with another right cross behind it.
00:35:31Jones throwing right hand, then left hook combinations,
00:35:47and a right hand over the top from Tony.
00:35:49And Tony just beginning to get off a little bit here
00:35:52in round four.
00:35:56Tony is getting closer to finding the range right now.
00:36:09You can just see him getting closer and closer to the mark.
00:36:12Getting more active.
00:36:17Good left by Jones as he wound the right hand up.
00:36:22He lands three or four more punches.
00:36:23The hand speed display continues spectacularly for Roy Jones.
00:36:40as he wound the right hand up he lands three or four more punches the hand speed display
00:36:46continues spectacularly for roy jones just unorthodox punches tony doesn't know where he
00:36:52is half the time where jones is
00:37:02we're getting a little closer to him now we're getting a little closer to him now
00:37:06when you hit him with the right hand come back to the left hook
00:37:18getting a little closer to him now we're reaching him with love
00:37:23when you hit him with the right hand come back to the left hook but jab your way in
00:37:29you know what you do let it work let it work he's slowing down
00:37:33carol letterman your scorecard after four rounds four rounds to nothing 40 to 35 roy jones jr he's
00:37:40really giving james tony a beating so far he certainly gets an extra point for the clean
00:37:44knockdown in round three roy jones all the way i've got roy winning the first four rounds just as well
00:37:51and i have as well
00:37:56tony said to bill miller boy i'm having fun
00:37:59only a prize fighter after taking some of these punches could say that
00:38:04kill him up honey they trade shots to open round five but again jones landed the last two punches of
00:38:12that exchange
00:38:15and the first two punches there james has nothing to throw
00:38:27two more left hands
00:38:34this unorthodox movement and the unorthodox sponges are completely book defuddling james tony up to this
00:38:41point right hand left hand combination by jones landed tony landed a left in return
00:38:47tony starting to snap to it a little bit but still outgunned in almost every exchange
00:38:58tony has got a punch to the body can't that's where those punches belong
00:39:03stay downstairs for a while then that hit will come to you
00:39:14if he finds himself wanting to get out so far down that he's got to go for a late round
00:39:18knockout against jones that's going to be tough because of jones's quickness and defense
00:39:23and if jones finds himself comfortably ahead he can certainly kill the clock big left hook big
00:39:29left hook by jones two left hooks tony pretending not to be hurt but he's wobbled now james lands a
00:39:36right hand in return tony trying to take advantage of the chance opened up by jones's aggression
00:39:42jones will not let tony into this fight tony lands a hard punch he comes back with two
00:39:51right right right roy tried to end it with a right hand right there just missed
00:40:07right hand counter by tony but jones is moving away with the punch
00:40:10here's where jones tony has to get off when he has him on the rope he's got to bank to the
00:40:15body immediately he's got to be busier that left hand landed but it was a glancing blow
00:40:22talk about unorthodox he spun around and left landed the left hook jones is supposed to be the unorthodox
00:40:28guy solid left hook by jones and you saw james tony's head snap to the side again
00:40:40james tony's got the lug fail out he's starting to go to work but jones continues to box circles
00:40:48around him and land the heavier shots as well
00:40:56jones certainly answered some questions
00:40:59about whether he has the right stuff inside him in that round
00:41:03well he got nailed with a couple of punches larry but again he would not allow tony to take the edge
00:41:10right back but we'll get an impact
00:41:16there you go you're doing good
00:41:19this six round baby coming in the six coming okay here here come in
00:41:25once again let's watch those fast hands if we can see him because james tony doesn't
00:41:36apparently able to see him there's a perfect example of an unorthodox punch
00:41:41coming when you leave when you don't expect it gill and you don't see it those are the ones that really
00:41:45can get to you james tony has been talking about going up to heavyweight he said the hardest part of
00:41:58every fight is making weight it's only supposition but you suspect at this moment that making weight this
00:42:05time took a lot out of james tony i'm not ready to take any credit away from jones because what jones
00:42:13is doing here is is just dictating everything on his own and i'm not sure it has anything to do with
00:42:18the weight yet 61 landing percentage in round five for jones 37 out of 61 mostly power shots it's terrific stuff
00:42:36another left hook on the button by roy jones jr and you notice that jones doesn't set things up
00:42:41to the left chair that's the unorthodox part of his style he doesn't set things up he'll move with
00:42:47his feet and all of a sudden leap in with that left hook and it's very very effective but again by doing
00:42:53that he leaves himself open for a split second but so far nobody has been able to take advantage of it
00:42:58nobody that he's 40 so quick punch it get out punch it get out keep him up don't hold him don't hold him
00:43:06let him go let him go let him go let him go again crackling right hand jones lands the last punch
00:43:18last tag boy jones right step back step back
00:43:24tony's remembering now to go to the body when he gets jones against the ropes
00:43:28and you notice that tony just didn't even try to throw it yet he just pours out but again it's the
00:43:36it's the footwork on that left hook that fast left hook
00:43:50proud doing and dying with yet another left hook same thing every time there's no no jabs involved
00:43:56he doesn't have to faint the jab he just leaps in quickly gets an angle and bang like
00:44:01right in there with that left hook and if you told james tony two days ago that roy could do that he
00:44:04just said no way get out punch it get out right step back but you're right he's done it all the way
00:44:10through tonight let's keep playing don't tie him up come on keep on put your arm back break step back
00:44:20step back come on you guys there was a question again where tony was just too slow getting off
00:44:33and instead of jones waiting to block a punch beat him to the punch
00:44:38he's back in the back on the corner again and again who gets off first jones
00:44:43the battle for james tony's ibf super middleweight championship so far a spectacular virtuoso performance
00:44:52by the challenger roy jones jr
00:44:55he's getting a little closer to this stuff now that it took here i want you just just some of the
00:45:09jabs some of the hooks you're doing now from inside instead of outside with a stick for time
00:45:14right but it comes through the middle right it's time to put a little more pressure put a little
00:45:20question we got him on our territory now coming to the championship round being through the middle
00:45:27through the middle
00:45:37try to make you flicking for everything you do every time you flick at him man you're going for it
00:45:43all right okay although we're only halfway through
00:45:48the scheduled 12 rounds we're already at that stage where james tony looks like he's going to
00:45:55have to do something dramatic to get back into the fight it would have to be very very dramatic larry
00:46:01like a knockout we're counting that knockdown he's already uh seven points behind and he's got six
00:46:08rounds to catch up he's done it in the past but maybe not against fighters the quality of roy jones jr
00:46:14he was down on points when he knocked out none in the 11th to win the world middleweight championship
00:46:22in 91. he needed to knock out tim littles in a specific round because of a bad head cut
00:46:28to win that fight and did it against a fighter who'd never been down or out
00:46:33so it's not out of the question but this is still all roy jones as round seven begins but again
00:46:38again solid left tony in a little bit of trouble again jones is really never directly in front of
00:46:47of uh james tony he takes those angle shots and tony really doesn't know where the punches are coming
00:46:53from there was a foul by roy jones we have to open use that for leverage
00:46:57right step back step back the whole rope the whole rope and steel tells him not to do it
00:47:07james tony just completely befuddled by jones's speed unorthodoxy
00:47:14quickness
00:47:17again tony he's playing hide and seek with tony in the ring it's a square ring they're both inside
00:47:22but half the time tony doesn't know where he is
00:47:29yeah waiting against the ropes what in the world can tony do gill to nullify the effectiveness of
00:47:35jones's left hook the only thing he can do is start banging to the body when you when you have a guy
00:47:40against the ropes don't even think go straight right here to the body and try to come back with
00:47:44a left hook you're going to hit something even if you hit his arm but if you hesitate hesitate
00:47:51wait for an opening jones gets off first and beats him to the punch
00:47:56hey you can see you can see tony hesitate
00:48:00good count on there by james tony but it's it's hard to find around here that you might have given
00:48:06to the champion
00:48:21what other middleweights could throw combinations with that hand speed gill i i would have to go
00:48:28back a long way maybe to the day the super ray robinson he can throw punches that fast and that
00:48:34effective work work out work your way out punch your hands are free
00:48:38put your arms back roy put your arms back and remember this is 168 pounds eight pounds up from the old
00:48:47middleweight limit of 160. again again the jones comes back in the exchanges good left hook by james tony
00:48:56best punch of the fight for tony the left hook that ended round seven
00:49:03you
00:49:10especially when we're inside we got to take this well we're on our territory now we got to make our move
00:49:17harold seven rounds your score harold seven rounds your score
00:49:32larry 70 to 62 7 to nothing roy jones i never saw a super middleweight throw six seven eight punch
00:49:51combinations like he throws he's absolutely beautiful the guy in his short pants is kicking the crap out of
00:49:55the other guy i mean not get him from pillar to post he is the only killer in pensacola florida who's not a right to lifer
00:50:05all right let's watch what happens here on the ropes jones seems to have an edge whether
00:50:10tony is on the ropes or he's on the ropes his hands his fast hands get him out of trouble
00:50:15five rounds left so far both fighters have caught some stiff punches but they haven't they haven't really
00:50:29hurt each other that badly yet i was surprised even tony landed a few good straight punches they just
00:50:37wiped right off of jones i thought that tony was hurt a couple of times during the fight larry not
00:50:42seriously but hurt how about now how about right now he's just being completely overwhelmed
00:50:50and i think a left hook to the body hurt james tony badly to set this up
00:50:57the old's landed a wallop to tony's ribcage
00:51:00and james tony hasn't thrown a punch since that body shot and look how cool lloyd jones is
00:51:16jones has knocked men out with body shots glenn wolf in the first round for instance
00:51:21and now tony begins to throw again but tried to counter but again that those reflexes of jones
00:51:31just nothing's there when you punch at it
00:51:36two more left hooks right on the button and the thing that amazes me you know you say jones is a
00:51:40boxer he does this without using a left jab if both men have dispensed with the jab completely and this is
00:51:47just going to be a slugfest the rest of the way james tony has always has had a good left jab
00:51:52outside he's moved it in the prince charles williams fight but again uh he's not using it he's just
00:51:57walking in gill there he paused with it a little bit but the snapping left jab is gone from tony's arsenal
00:52:05just walking in
00:52:09we thought jones would move more away from tony but he's really been contemptuous of tony in the last couple
00:52:16of rounds again he can go on the ropes no matter where he goes tony just can't hit him
00:52:30sledgehammer right over the top by tony
00:52:33glancing blow didn't get all of the target again in that exchange last tag by lloyd jones
00:52:40tony showing some assertiveness now but he took a lot of this round off after he took that
00:52:49crushing left to the body early on there's a left hook by james tony
00:52:59and jones comes back with a fury
00:53:01and steel stops tony right in the middle of his best action what is steel doing what is
00:53:11richard steel doing he thought he heard the bell and now he does hear the bell and that really hurt
00:53:17came from tony
00:53:34yeah
00:53:36so
00:53:38so
00:53:45Steele comes over to talk to the timekeeper, trying to get the signal straight.
00:54:03There's Tony in a ring with only two other people, and he's looking for the fighter in it.
00:54:15Round nine begins. You saw the champion breathing hard in his corner.
00:54:20Right now, this 168-pound championship belongs to Roy Jones.
00:54:25It's up to James Tony to win it back.
00:54:28And Bill Miller still hasn't spoken to James Tony with any real sense of urgency, saying,
00:54:44James, you're going to have to do something big. You know, he's talking very matter-of-factly.
00:54:51Slipped by Jones, and Tony did not take advantage.
00:54:58Tony a little more cautious than he's been in other fights.
00:55:01Jones's left hand has shown us the reason why, over and over.
00:55:10He said before the fight, Larry Merchant, that Roy Jones Jr. was a mystery.
00:55:14How much of the unknown is left now?
00:55:17Well, beyond any question, he's answered a lot of those questions.
00:55:24It's in his grasp.
00:55:25Roy, step back, step back.
00:55:32Pull him back, Roy, pull him back.
00:55:37Pull him back, pull him back.
00:55:38Why don't you get out?
00:55:39Roy, step back, step back, step back.
00:55:42You can't do it.
00:55:43You can't do it.
00:55:44What in the world?
00:55:48All who are they?
00:55:51It looks as if Roy Jones is taking a round off.
00:55:54He may take the next, the rest of the fight off, Gil.
00:55:58Fight for the fight!
00:56:02Fight for the fight!
00:56:03Fight for the fight!
00:56:04Fight for the fight!
00:56:05Fight for the fight!
00:56:06cigarette for the fight!
00:56:08Fight for the fight!
00:56:09Fight for the fight!
00:56:11Fight for the fight!
00:56:12Combination by Jones, left took over the top by Jones.
00:56:19Tony trying to stop, but not punching his way in effectively.
00:56:37Short left took by Jones, the more effective of the two
00:56:41punches there, Tony's sweeping left, missed badly.
00:56:46Look at that footwork of Roy Jones, side to side.
00:56:58Again, last tag by Roy Jones.
00:57:02He lulls you to sleep and then he tries to put you to sleep.
00:57:06Three rounds to go.
00:57:11There you go.
00:57:12There you go.
00:57:13Do you feel that hand?
00:57:14Okay, just like you feel.
00:57:15Run it off, man.
00:57:16Right up there.
00:57:17Other water bottle running?
00:57:18I'm hit hard, man.
00:57:19Come on, give it to him.
00:57:20Give it to him.
00:57:21Give it to him.
00:57:22Give it to him.
00:57:23Give it to him.
00:57:24Give it to him.
00:57:25Good?
00:57:26Uh-huh.
00:57:27We're down to our rounds.
00:57:28We've got to make our move.
00:57:29We've got to close the gap.
00:57:31You hear me?
00:57:32Uh-huh.
00:57:33All right.
00:57:34Let's close the gap now.
00:57:35I'm going to the tenth round.
00:57:36We've got to have it.
00:57:37I don't need but nine minutes fighting.
00:57:39I've got to have it.
00:57:40I've got to have it.
00:57:41It's a little bit.
00:57:42I've got to have it.
00:57:43Come on, give it to him.
00:57:44Give it to him.
00:57:45Give it to him.
00:57:46All right.
00:57:47Give it to him.
00:57:48Give it to him.
00:57:49Give it to him.
00:57:50Good?
00:57:51Yeah.
00:57:52Let's close the gap now.
00:57:5510th round.
00:57:57We got to have it.
00:57:58I don't need but nine minutes fighting.
00:58:01I got to have it.
00:58:13So far, the Mongoose is too quick for the Cobra.
00:58:18Now this time, maybe James Toney's taken off about seven to eight pounds.
00:58:23Larry's and maybe he'll be a little quicker for the rest of the fight.
00:58:27Hard to see so far what he could find that would do the necessary damage to Jones at this point.
00:58:33Well, one big left hooker right hand on the chin could help at this weight.
00:58:39And the other guy can do a lot of funny things.
00:58:45You can see the quickness of Roy Jones.
00:58:54Constantly moving, constantly faking.
00:58:56Don't hold it.
00:58:57Constantly get out of there.
00:58:58Pull it back, pull it back.
00:59:00Step actually, step back.
00:59:04Tony so cool, so nonexistent as he gave the first two rounds away.
00:59:09And he got knocked down in the third.
00:59:14And since that time, Roy Jones, to our eyes at least,
00:59:17has seemed to simply pile up the points.
00:59:27Again, Jones is just such an unorthodox fighter.
00:59:30A couple of times in the fight when he's against the ropes,
00:59:33he actually pulls his head back, which is a fundamental no-no,
00:59:36but he gets away with it.
00:59:39Jones again stepping in with that left hook and then gone,
00:59:45as Tony looked around to find it.
00:59:48Right now, they're cooling each other off with those missed roundhouse punches.
00:59:53And he's going to get out of there.
00:59:54Punching it out!
00:59:55Break, step back.
00:59:56Punch!
00:59:57Punch!
00:59:58Punch!
00:59:59Punch!
01:00:00Go, punch!
01:00:01Punch!
01:00:02Punch!
01:00:03Punch!
01:00:04Punch!
01:00:05Punch!
01:00:06Punch!
01:00:07Punch!
01:00:08Punch!
01:00:09Punch!
01:00:10Punch!
01:00:11Punch!
01:00:12Punch!
01:00:13Again, Tony moves him into the corners and against the ropes,
01:00:15but then he allows Jones to get off first.
01:00:18He's chasing, chasing, chasing, but nothing happens.
01:00:22Let's see who gets off first here.
01:00:30Come on, work, work.
01:00:31That was a dangerous left hook by James Toney.
01:00:40Pointing it out, pointing it out.
01:00:41Thunderous right inside by Jones.
01:00:43Step back, step back, step back.
01:00:46Jones is looking at the clock.
01:00:48That could be an indication that he's starting to get a little tired.
01:00:51Come on, let's work this out, work this out.
01:00:56Pull it back, pull it back.
01:01:03Chopping right hand for Toney.
01:01:05Jones was moving away with the punch.
01:01:08Wasn't a very effective punch.
01:01:21We've got to have this six minutes and we want this fight.
01:01:26We've got to have this six minutes, James.
01:01:28Okay.
01:01:29All right.
01:01:30Show it to me.
01:01:31Okay.
01:01:32Let's go. We've got to have it.
01:01:36Keep him turning, champ.
01:01:37Don't give him nothing he want to have.
01:01:39Make him find it.
01:01:40Be that noodle in the haystack.
01:01:41I hear you.
01:01:42Be that noodle.
01:01:43You've got two rounds left, champ.
01:01:44Two rounds left and you're mining.
01:01:47Two rounds left and you're mining.
01:01:48Ten rounds, your score.
01:01:50Larry, I thought James Toney stole the tenth round.
01:01:52Roy didn't do a heck of a lot.
01:01:54Nine rounds to one.
01:01:55Ninety-nine to ninety.
01:01:57Roy Jones.
01:01:58He is so quick.
01:01:59He's moving so nicely.
01:02:00Landed so many great combination punches.
01:02:02You just can't take it away from him.
01:02:03James Toney is going to need a dynamite finish to win this fight.
01:02:06Dynamite is the operative word.
01:02:09He's going to have to throw a stick of dynamite in there to blow this man up.
01:02:14But I'm not sure that would do it.
01:02:16Well, the only thing in my opinion now that can do it is a knockout.
01:02:19Roy Jones only threw 32 punches in round ten.
01:02:22That drops way down from his previous punch output.
01:02:27It was in the eleventh round when Tony scored the dramatic comeback knockout of Michael Dunn back in 1991
01:02:33that won in the middleweight championship.
01:02:35But Nunn was not the kind of power puncher that Roy Jones is.
01:02:40You heard the advice to Jones in the corner.
01:02:43Be a needle in a haystack.
01:02:45That's the way of the trainer telling him,
01:02:47get out of there.
01:02:48You've got the fight and won.
01:02:52Gil, is it even possible that Tony deludes himself into believing
01:02:56that he's still got a shot at winning a decision here?
01:02:58I would have to say the fighter, yes.
01:03:01But the trainer should know better.
01:03:03The trainer should be telling him,
01:03:05you need a knockout to win this fight.
01:03:07Bill Miller hasn't said that at any point, has he?
01:03:09No, he hasn't.
01:03:10He said, we need this six minutes.
01:03:11The six minutes won't do him any good, in my opinion,
01:03:14and on my scorecard.
01:03:20I think we're going to have an exciting 12th round.
01:03:23Again, Jones is killing the clock, not doing too much this round.
01:03:27Butting an inside left against Tony's head there.
01:03:31Tony putting in the body work on the ropes,
01:03:33but it's probably too little too late.
01:03:39Crowd begins to try to lift the champion.
01:03:41Well, this goes to show you that James has built a following
01:03:53in his three years as a world champion.
01:03:55Boy, there are a lot of people who've been on him.
01:03:59Jones nailed Tony with a solid left hook.
01:04:03And Tony wobbles just slightly against the ropes again.
01:04:07Look how calm Jones is in there.
01:04:11Sending range fives, then hard punches.
01:04:13He's doing it all.
01:04:15You're tempted to say, Larry, that for a decision to be taken away
01:04:43be taken away from roy jones here it would almost have to be the olympics
01:04:49now if this was taken away from from roy jones it'd be worse than the olympics
01:05:00he may have been a little tired before jones but he's got a second wind he's left back in there now
01:05:05and still james tony showing none of the desperation style commitment that
01:05:13we all think would be necessary for him to salvage the fight
01:05:23i'm about to have these glasses i have a thing
01:05:29we need it we need this here
01:05:35i got to have this here we need it there's no more tomorrow
01:05:44this is it on your head okay i want you to touch him put them three and four point
01:05:49combinations on him and go here i'm on your head he won't let him talk them final round okay
01:05:55don't give him a chance don't give him a chance to take nothing okay
01:05:58go get him
01:06:11in the corner of the undefeated champion with the best record of any undefeated world
01:06:15titlist in the sport there was silence for the last 20 seconds of that one minute break between
01:06:21rounds nobody said to james you must have a knockout to win the fight so now here comes tony with his
01:06:27his last three minutes to try to get something done against aspiring super middleweight champion
01:06:34roy jones tony just takes so long to get off he allowed jones to escape he's fainting fainting
01:06:41what is he waiting for
01:06:48keep him up keep him up keep him up want to get out of there
01:06:54good solid body punches by jones smart stuff
01:07:04keep him in front keep him in front
01:07:06at what point guild is jones simply trying to stay away well the way they told him in the corner
01:07:13that you don't take any chances but throw some good solid punches i mean i know if i was in this
01:07:19corner i'd be saying they just killed the clock you got to fight one i didn't do that too often but
01:07:24when the guys this far ahead why take any kind of chance
01:07:27points of the break somebody somebody i used to always tell my friends you have to win the last
01:07:35round especially if you're the other guy's hometown
01:07:39yeah but you wouldn't have told jones tonight that he had to win this last round would you
01:07:43no i would not have as they say he's in my opinion there's no way they could take it away from
01:07:48it's been a spectacular display by roy jones he continues to step in and fire the left hook from
01:07:57time to time and tony simply not busy enough to be building toward the climax he needs he just can't
01:08:05get off can't get off the movement has been puzzling him all night long big right hand by jones right on
01:08:13the button one minute to go big left hook by jones yet another one right right and these are solid
01:08:24punches which means that tony has to have a chin of granite
01:08:29punching it out of there break break
01:08:37the sand is running out of the clock for james tony
01:08:40more than six years ago roy jones jr was victimized by what most observers called
01:08:48the worst decision in the history of amateur boxing it robbed him of an expected gold medal at the
01:08:54olympic games in seoul in 1988 he's waited all this time to regain center stage
01:09:03and now tonight in the biggest fight of his career against a man regarded by many as the most
01:09:08skilled champion in the sport roy jones has been every bit as dominant as he was that day in korea so long ago
01:09:16given the kind of fighter that james tony has been over the last year and a half
01:09:23and so on james tony has been over the last year and a half that's just a terrific performance
01:09:40by Roy Jones yes it is and you know they we had mentioned about putting on
01:09:46all that weight and I was told that he had done that in quite a few fights but
01:09:50that eventually has to catch up with you Larry I don't think that the James
01:09:53Tony was on top of his game tonight I know Jones was great but Tony was not
01:09:58Tony tonight yeah but I'm I'm in Larry's corner on this one let's not harp on
01:10:03that too much because any harping on it takes away from a spectacular performance
01:10:07by Roy Jones which in my view and maybe in yours Gil answered just about every
01:10:12remaining question I thought he was absolutely great tonight again he he's
01:10:16a very unorthodox fighter he does things his own way I don't think he even knows
01:10:20what he's going to do but boy it's effective the fight plan for Jones was
01:10:25for a lot of power shots and very few jabs he followed it to a tee let's go to the
01:10:31ring announcer Michael Buffer for the official decision ladies and gentlemen
01:10:35here at the MGM Grand of Las Vegas we go to the scorecards Jon Stewart scores the
01:10:41belt 119 to 108 Glenn Hamada scores it 117 to 110 and Jerry Roth has it 118 to 109 for the
01:10:51winner by unanimous decision and new
01:10:55super middleweight champion of the world
01:11:00Roy Jones jr.
01:11:06Roy Jones jr.
01:11:18Roy Jones jr.
01:11:28go here first loss of james tony's career roy jones moves to 27 and oh and based on tonight's
01:11:37performance the sky's the limit final punch stat numbers and you will see statistical domination
01:11:46here as roy jones threw 163 more punches landed 128 more punches and landed at a nearly 50 rate
01:11:57against the champion regarded as a pretty good defender and a guy who could wear down a lot of
01:12:03opponents tonight it was all jones from the opening bell to the finish and larry merchant
01:12:09stands by in the ring with the new champion larry thank you jim roy congratulations a terrific
01:12:17performance did you know from the first minute and a half that you were just too quick for him
01:12:27could you tell from the get-go that you were just too quick for him roy yeah i was much um
01:12:37i was much too fast for him and i know that uh his the way he lost is gonna be a difficult thing for
01:12:42him to handle well first of all i thank god for giving me the opportunity to come out and do the
01:12:46things i do uh oh all my praise to god thank my father and coach murk both for the terrific training
01:12:51that they've been doing throughout my entire career and uh thank god for everything i'm a happy man
01:12:57you meant god is all able baby it's all possible you mentioned the weight what did you know
01:13:02personally about the difficulty he was having with weight well i come from 178 sometimes 180 to make
01:13:09160 that's a very tough thing to do and fight 12 rounds i'm a lot bigger than guys most time a lot
01:13:15faster but it's tough when it's fat and i wouldn't i wouldn't fat i'd just be thick at 178 most of the
01:13:20time but yeah man thanks baby hey good work yeah hey good work baby hey hey you all right hey yeah
01:13:27he is hey yeah what's up baby back i'll be back i'll be back i'll be back dance so we'll be back
01:13:32watch out live every week but yeah and um you know it's just it's a tough thing to do and uh i
01:13:38commend him on how he made the weight but i knew that he would be watched i mean you know the way
01:13:42would work how did that play into your plans knowing that he would be weakened well my hands are so fast my
01:13:48people so quick until all i had to do with box move around the ring box not taking on stupid
01:13:53chances but i do like to fight so i sat down with him a couple times because he's a warrior and to
01:13:56beat the champion you got to beat the champ so i sat with him some just to show him that all right you
01:13:59want you wanted to prove not just that you were quick and strong but that you had something inside
01:14:05you a few times in the fight is that what you're saying right exactly that championship quality that
01:14:09stuff that it takes to be a champion i had to prove that i have that unlike other champions who are
01:14:14of the challenges who come here challenge the champ run from the whole night i never run from nobody a
01:14:18whole night did he hurt you stays you at all during the fight no but he's a solid puncher but uh you
01:14:26know my chin is real tough i caught some good shots but they didn't bother me at all did you feel you
01:14:30had hurt him seriously yeah i heard him a couple of times heard about three or four times in the fight
01:14:35you know he has a strong chin i expect though so i got to give him that does this make up for soul
01:14:46finally you've waited six years to get here james does this make up for soul finally roy i'm sorry
01:14:51yeah uh this makes up somewhere well like i said thank god i was healthy able to get this forward
01:14:55out in defeat thank god my hands stay healthy throughout the entire thing and uh you know james
01:15:00tony was a wonderful champion i stepped up you know took the challenge had to do what i had to do
01:15:04he'll be back he's a great fighter thank you very much jim all right all right thanks very much gil
01:15:09clancy quickly gerald mcclellan michael nunn can you think of a likely opponent for this guy based on
01:15:14what he showed tonight well mcclellan's punching power he'd probably be the the outstanding opponent but
01:15:19you know this guy's a super middleweight willie pep he makes moves that i haven't seen in a long long
01:15:25time can make anybody look bad i'll bet you james tony's going to tell us in a minute that he's going up to
01:15:29the heavyweight division let's go up and listen to him with larry all right james was he just too

01:17:25itself in an almost uncontrollable rage as a matter of fact when james tony came into the building this
01:17:31evening when the security guard asked him for his credentials he pushed him to the side in essence

01:17:42i'm impressed by what jones showed in terms of championship attributes controlled emotions
