00:00Meanwhile, a teenage sensation named Mike Tyson exploded into the heavyweight picture,
00:05and at 20, became the youngest man to capture at least a piece of the coveted title.
00:10His mission would be complete, with all three belts wrapped around his waist.
00:15But the showdown with IBF champion Spinks wasn't to be.
00:19The so-called lineal descendant of the title took a different route,
00:22stopping Jerry Cooney in five efficiently brutal rounds.
00:26Spinks still had his claim on the throne.
00:28And as for Mike Tyson, he was making his way through ex-champions and contenders like a human wrecking ball.
00:35He took on each opponent with a ferocity foreign even to boxing standards.
00:40And in January of 1988, he too disposed of Larry Holmes with thunderous ease.
00:46Now the stage was set to clear up the confusion,
00:49to settle this controversy over who reigns as undisputed heavyweight champion once and for all.
00:58You are looking at a live shot of a city which has never before hosted a sports event
01:11of the magnitude of the one which takes place here tonight.
01:14Times have changed.
01:16Tonight, live from the convention center in Atlantic City, New Jersey,
01:20Trump Plaza is the host for a night of boxing billed as once and for all.
01:26We begin with a 10-round heavyweight fight between James Buster Douglas and Mike Williams.
01:34Then an important 12-round IVF heavyweight elimination fight
01:42between former heavyweight champion Trevor Burbick and Carl the Truth Williams.
01:48And then in the main event, undefeated world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson
01:52defends his ground against another undefeated heavyweight with a claim on the title,
01:56Michael Spinks.
01:57It's scheduled for 12 rounds.
02:02All of this brought to you by Diet Pepsi, the undisputed champion.
02:0922,000 people will eventually enter the Atlantic City Convention Center this evening.
02:14Show business stars, political comments, captains of business, regular guys and their ladies
02:20making a once-only big-ticket plunge for the most significant heavyweight championship fight
02:27of the decade of the 1980s.
02:33Hello, I'm Jim Lampley.
02:35There was a time, particularly during the reigns of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in the 1970s,
02:40when we couldn't resist calling a fight with this big a buildup the fight of the century.
02:45Now, in the different media environment of the 1980s, more jaded or more perceptive, take your pick,
02:52we recognize that the public hungers for a heavyweight fight like this one about once every 10 years.
02:58So now, in the tradition of Dempsey Tunney and Louis Schmeling and Marciano Walcott
03:04and Ali Frazier-1 and Holmes Cooney, we bring you Mike Tyson against Michael Spinks.
03:10I'll be your host for the next three special hours from here in Atlantic City,
03:14working with me now and standing by at ringside are my colleagues Larry Merchant
03:18and a man not unfamiliar to the heat of this kind of spotlight, Sugar Ray Leonard.
03:23Larry?
03:24Thank you, Jim.
03:25I would describe the atmosphere down here on the floor of Convention Hall as an electric murmur of anticipation.
03:34It will build as the night moves along.
03:37And Ray, you had four gigantic fights, Durant twice, Hearns and Hagler.
03:43Does that electric jolt, when it reaches full voltage, go through the fighters?
03:49Larry, it has a tendency to make a fighter choke.
03:51What these guys must do is shake that off and stick to their game plan.
03:55Block it out.
03:56Block it out completely.
03:57We have another first at this fight, and that's the first time we have an announcer hyphen promoter.
04:03Ray Leonard is the co-promoter of six closed-circuit venues in Maryland.
04:10Ray, did you have any nervous moments about this fight as a promoter, and how does it look now?
04:16Well, Larry, it's been a great experience.
04:17In fact, my partner, Frank DeFrancis, is so excited.
04:21He wished that Spinks and Tyson fight every week.
04:23Well, that sounds good.
04:26There was a time when an event of this size would almost undoubtedly be held at the one-time mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden.
04:36Tonight, Madison Square Garden is one of many closed-circuit venues all over the country.
04:42Let's go to our man there, Bruce Beck.
04:45Thank you, Larry.
04:47Madison Square Garden is alive.
04:49This may not be the live site for Tyson Spinks, but you can't tell it from the reaction of the fans.
04:56This place is electric right now.
04:58This is one of 1,600 closed-circuit venues across the country.
05:02The average ticket price, $35, and here at the Garden, the price is commensurate with that.
05:07The lowest price, $20.
05:09The highest price is $60.
05:11But the fans get a lot more than just Tyson Spinks this evening.
05:15They had a chance to see a live undercard.
05:17Headlining the card was Michael Dynamite-Dokes, the former WBA heavyweight champion,
05:22and Mike McCallum, the former WBA junior middleweight champion.
05:26Both were victorious.
05:27But Glenwood Brown was not as lucky.
05:30He was defeated by the veteran Saul Mambi in a split decision in a welterweight bout.
05:35Now, just about 20 minutes ago, these four giant screens behind me, 15 by 20, were lowered into position.
05:41The Garden tonight, well, a crowd expected of 17,000.
05:45That's a walk-up of about 5,000.
05:48That's one of the largest walk-ups in the history of this Madison Square Garden.
05:52The crowd is as diverse as New York City.
05:55We have fans from every ethnic group, from every social class, and they are here because it's an event.
06:01During the course of the evening, we'll be bringing you reports from the Garden to give you an idea of what goes on at a closed-circuit venue.
06:07Now, back to Lowry in Atlantic City.
06:10Thank you, Bruce.
06:12And we're getting ready for our first fight of the night, James Buster Douglas and Mike Williams.
06:21The focus of attention will be on Mike Williams, who is regarded as a potential future opponent for Mike Tyson or Michael Spinks.
06:33Mike! Mike! Mike! Mike!
06:37And there is Mike Williams, a man who looks like he's been sculpted for this job.
06:45One defeat in 17 fights, and that was in his 13th fight against a formidable opponent for that stage of his career, Tim Witherspoon, by a split decision.
06:57Mike Williams out of Houston, Texas.
07:00And there is James Buster Douglas, who had his shot at the IBF title, lost it last summer to Tony Tucker, a good, solid journeyman.
07:13And here is our tale of the tape.
07:29Douglas looks a little beefy at 232, Ray, but a lot of times these guys figure that the additional weight around the midsection creates an armor.
07:38I doubt they're very serious at this time around.
07:40That indicates perhaps that he's lost a little of his enthusiasm after losing that fight to Tucker last summer.
07:48Here are some statistics for a statistical profile of the fighters from our punch stat.
07:55You can see they throw almost the same amount of punches and land about as often.
08:02But the jabs also, a lot of jabs, almost the same numbers for each one.
08:08And here are the New Jersey rules that will be in effect tonight.
08:15The 10-point scoring system, three judges, not the referee, scoring the fight.
08:19There can be a standing eight count, and the fighter cannot be saved by the bell even in the last round, which is unusual.
08:28The three-knockdown rule is in effect, and the doctor can advise the referee to stop the fight.
08:33Now let's go to our ring announcer, Michael Buffer, for the pre-fight introductions.
08:40Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, and welcome to Atlantic City's Convention Hall, courtesy of Mr. Donald Trump and the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino.
08:50This is the first of our featured bouts of the evening, and it's brought to you from Don King Productions.
08:57This bout is sanctioned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, Boxing Commissioner Larry Hazzard.
09:02The judges assigned at ringside are Frank Brunette, Richard F. Murray, and Frank J. Cairo.
09:08The referee for this contest is Rudy Battle.
09:13This contest is scheduled for 10 rounds in the heavyweight division.
09:17Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner.
09:20Wearing the solid black trunks with gold letters, he weighs an even, 217 pounds.
09:26His professional record, 16-1, 11 by knockout.
09:30He's from Houston, Texas, ladies and gentlemen, Mike Williams.
09:38And his opponent fighting out of the red corner, wearing the solid white trunks and weighing an even, 232 pounds.
09:46As a professional, 26 victories, 4 defeats in 1 draw, 18 big KOs from Columbus, Ohio.
09:55Now, James Buster Douglas.
10:04Okay, gentlemen, you've both received your pre-fight instructions.
10:07I expect a clean break at all times.
10:09I want a clean contest, and good luck to both of you.
10:12Let's shake hands.
10:13Shake hands.
10:14Shake hands.
10:14Douglas figures to be more of the aggressor.
10:23Williams is a boxer puncher.
10:27Take back on your phone.
10:28Williams from Houston, Texas.
10:30Douglas from Columbus, Ohio.
10:32You will see the experience in Buster Douglas, Larry, because I've noticed with Mike Williams, he has a physique of Mike Weaver.
10:55Very strong upper body torso, and he relies a great deal on his power.
11:00Here is going to be a matter of picking his shots like he's doing now, using that jab, trying to set the larger man up, Buster Douglas.
11:08So far in the early moments, Douglas has thrown all of the hard punches, none of which has landed.
11:34Good right hand to the body.
11:36Those are the kind of shots, Larry, that's going to do the job for Mike Williams.
11:40He has to drill those shots to the body, try to bring the hands down of Buster Douglas.
11:46The mistake that Williams has made in the past is a tendency to be straight up.
11:51In doing so, he's been hit by some big bombs.
11:58Tim Witherspoon did hit him with some good, solid punches.
12:03Didn't put a serious dent in him.
12:06Ray, when you see the soft underbelly of someone like Douglas opposite you, is there a tendency to want to go for it?
12:20Well, normally, Larry, once you've got, gets back to...
12:22That was a jab.
12:25It seems to me that Williams was a little off balance there.
12:29He wasn't hurt.
12:30He was off balance.
12:31As you said, Ray, he stands straight up.
12:34And you can get in trouble.
12:35You can be pushed off balance easily that way.
12:38And also, Williams, to answer our question, he started, he delivered a left hook to the midsection of Buster Douglas.
12:48That was the first right hand that Williams has thrown to the head.
12:52Williams, in the past, has done a lot more of this, of moving and sticking and running.
13:12He has stood his ground on several occasions here and tried to deliver some punches with some good leverage behind him.
13:20Two hard jabs.
13:21This is a good test for Williams at this stage of his career.
13:36No assurance that he will pass the test.
13:40But a nice first round, Ray.
13:42Very good first round.
13:43And there you see the convention hall from the boardwalk outside.
13:56And there you see the two men who are the focus of the sporting world tonight.
14:05Come back with your left hook.
14:07It's real nice.
14:08Okay?
14:09But you've got to do combinations on this guy.
14:12You just can't throw one punch at him.
14:13Don't wait.
14:14Don't wait.
14:15Bring that breathing back.
14:16Slow it down.
14:17That's right.
14:17Nicely.
14:18Slow that breathing down.
14:18Talk to me real good.
14:19You're doing no good.
14:20All right.
14:20Great work.
14:21Okay?
14:21Let's keep the stick.
14:22When I say two, two.
14:24Get off.
14:24With the right hand.
14:25I say, come back with the left hook.
14:26Come back with it.
14:27All right?
14:27Then go.
14:28All right.
14:28Let's go.
14:28Get the stuff out.
14:29Let's go.
14:31Find the rhythm.
14:31That was the voice of Richie J. Ketty.
14:34Stay back in your corner.
14:35Stay back.
14:35The former trainer of Larry Holmes.
14:37Have two.
14:38Nice to play.
14:38Looking at Mike Williams, Ray, I can't help but think that it's in this same room that Miss
14:49America is crowned.
14:51He looks like a Mr. America of athletes.
14:54There's no question about that, Larry.
14:55And a lot of times when guys have this type of upper body, a lot of times they're so tight.
15:01But what I've noticed in Mike Williams, he's starting to use his jab.
15:05He's starting to box a little bit more.
15:06He's not as effective dancing around because, you see, he doesn't have as much sprain in
15:10his legs.
15:11But standing in front of his opponent, giving angles, he's a little more effective, more
15:18consistent in that jab.
15:19Williams has been a professional a little bit more than three years.
15:22As an amateur, he lost to Tyrell Biggs in the final of the Olympic Trials.
15:30He thinks he won it.
15:31Good right hand by Duggas.
15:53Duggas now is just trying to wear his man down.
15:58Here I am.
15:58Let him go.
15:59He has yet to cut the ring off.
16:01He doesn't seem concerned about Williams' hitting power.
16:06Williams has to hit him with something to get his attention because he is coming in.
16:11There he tried.
16:12A right hand just grazed his chin.
16:14Those punches are not penetrating Williams' defense.
16:23He has to hit him with something to get his attention.
16:53You know, I think, great.
16:55Here I have to stop punching both of them.
16:56Let him go.
16:57This is the same mistake that Duggas made against Tucker when he was trying to win the title,
17:03portion of the heavyweight title.
17:04He was, he made a stationary target and Tucker just went away at him with all kinds of shots.
17:12He has to be a little more, he has to be busier, Larry.
17:14All right, break.
17:14Stop wrestling.
17:15Tell him to hit him.
17:15Once he hit him.
17:15Williams has the kind of style that when it matures, if indeed it does, would seem to
17:25be the kind of style you'd want a fighter going against a Tyson.
17:32All right, break.
17:33Here I am.
17:33Turn in.
17:33Let him go.
17:34Step back.
17:34Step back, both of them.
17:37Bonus.
17:38These are very close rounds, difficult to score.
17:48All right.
17:50We lost the first round by a little bit.
17:52That round was pretty close to even.
17:53But you need to get going to the body more and you got to start roughing this guy up a
17:56little bit.
17:57And you know what he's got right now, don't you?
17:59Huh?
18:00All he's looking for is the right hand.
18:02All he's looking for is the right hand.
18:04Let's get out there behind that jab and start bumping this guy around and using that strength
18:07a little bit on him, okay?
18:09Let's win this round.
18:10Now, we want to win this round.
18:11We're going out there to win this round.
18:13All right, you're trying to shoot.
18:14Throw your right hand together.
18:15Left hand, left hand, and shoot it straight.
18:17Turn it over this way.
18:19Then you come back with a left hook.
18:20When you go in, when he's giving away to you, then go down in the body to come back up.
18:24You know, throw beautiful body shots.
18:26I'm not sitting on that.
18:26But you've got to keep backing this guy back.
18:28All right.
18:29Keep him backing up, and you got it.
18:32Keep him backing up.
18:33Those white gloves, medical surgical gloves you see on the hands of the trainers
18:38are a precaution used in New Jersey and some other states
18:43against the possibility of contracting AIDS from a cut.
18:48Now, Williams' corner has strongly advised him to be more positive and go after it in this round.
19:11They don't want him falling behind too far.
19:15What they want from him, Larry, is to be a little more aggressive and start putting his punches together.
19:20Too many times, fighters have a tendency to look for one shot.
19:23They try to load up with one punch.
19:25That's the mistake that Buster Douglas did.
19:27A jab.
19:27A beautiful, powerful left jab.
19:29Two, three, four, five.
19:31That put Williams to his knees.
19:33You don't often see that, but he caught him on the way in, and he caught him in a very erect posture.
19:39He is off balance, isn't he, Ray?
19:42Well, his stance is so widespread.
19:45Good by hand by Douglas.
19:47Now, Douglas is just going to take advantage and stay inside and work the body.
19:51This is a moment of crisis for Williams.
19:54Let's see how he deals with it.
19:55You can talk about styles all day and all night, but in the end, it's what you do when you're hit that usually determines how far you go in this game.
20:05Larry, also, you will see the inexperience of Mike Wimps' show because normally one of the guys hurt, he has a t-shirt grab his opponent to clear his head.
20:16All right, break.
20:17Turn and move.
20:18Let him go.
20:18Step back.
20:18That punch did land on the jaw of Douglas, but it was spent by the time it got there.
20:31Good right and a left hand by Douglas.
20:35All right, let him go.
20:36Here I am.
20:36Cut him loose.
20:37Nicely clean.
20:38Step back.
20:40There is blood in the mouth of Williams.
20:47All right, here I am.
20:48Break.
20:48Let him go.
20:49Stop punching.
20:49Stop punching in there.
20:50Don't hit him on the break.
20:52Let's keep it clean now.
20:53You don't want to get penalized.
21:04Douglas is being busier, rougher, flailing away, and Williams is going to have to sting him with something on the way in to discourage him.
21:14Otherwise, Douglas will just keep coming at him.
21:17And he's also loading up, Larry.
21:19That's why he's missing those shots.
21:20He should use that jab, get closer, and then drop the right hand.
21:28Just as you said, he was loading up, Ray.
21:31Watch the elbow.
21:32Keep it clean in there.
21:33One, two, three, four, five, six, six, six, six, six, six, seven, six.
21:51let's take a look and see just why williams is vulnerable to the jab and apparently it's
22:04it's simply his stance and where he's at he's saying he's close to douglas
22:11and he's just catching a good punch that one landed it seemed high on the shoulder blade
22:17or on the point of the corner of the the chin and it just pushed him over
22:23he obviously isn't hurt or dazed he's he looks more confused he's saying what's going on here
22:31why am i down i've just caught a jab that second knockdown he looks dazed here i mean
22:36yeah he looks so confused about not being knocked down by a left jab
22:39and didn't you once knock benitez down with the jab yeah but it wasn't as hard as i
22:49wanted to be good right hand another right hand and douglas senses that williams is not only
22:56confused but hurt and on the defensive and he's going after him
23:03it's really the jab that's doing the most damage by douglas
23:06good stiff left jab he's putting his entire body behind it
23:14that was a stiff right hand but it hasn't dented douglas that was that might have been the best
23:20punch that williams just landed good right to the body he's hurting his left hand and he's hurt again
23:25by the jab i've never seen that happen guys being knocked down by a left jab
23:32and continually rocked by it
23:42what should he be doing to avoid that jab he just has to keep his hands up he's just too
23:47straight up from me line and that's the problem because his knees aren't bent enough no they're not
23:52his stance is wide he doesn't have great legs he doesn't have great movement so he's so susceptible
23:58to the left jab of buster douglas plus douglas is also a lot stronger let him go let him go let him go
24:06step back step back
24:11and several years ago before mike tyson became a national figure he fought in houston texas and
24:22while he was there he sparred with mike williams and jimmy jacobs the late co-manager of tyson was so
24:31impressed with williams at that point that he singled him out as a potential future opponent to
24:36tyson but right now with his face smeared in blood still a bit dazed look in his eye and not being able to
24:47seize the initiative i break turn this thing around in his favor mike williams is uh gradually retreating as
24:56a potential opponent for tyson a lot of times guys are better fighters in the gym live because
25:04they have less distractions less cameras and and i tell you a lot of times guys have a tendency to choke
25:10i'm not saying that about about mike williams but it doesn't really help his concentration here
25:16good left that got through that peekaboo style defense and douglas is just wading in with abandon
25:23one thing we should keep in mind ray that douglas got very tired late in the fight with tucker
25:37one thing that works on that round started getting off first a little bit and i'm telling you dude is
25:53dog tired you understand put your head back this guy is dog tired
26:01you say hey hey you just got to get up there get your hands to move in now come on get out there and
26:05get to work now get your chin down use your jab step up there and get your hands moving this guy
26:09ain't that much all right okay james you see how nice when you're jabbing and when it does why you
26:16want to get off your rhythm for and get it stay on it two jab keep it in his face boom boom boom then
26:21come back then go downstairs boom but keep on your jab you got it you keep this guy going so here is the big
26:28arena starting to fill up fill up in anticipation of a major heavyweight prize fight
26:39round five keep it clean keep it clean
26:40right now all of the psychological momentum is on douglas side he is the dominant figure in here
26:57the elbow remember what we said earlier the mark of what a fighter is is what he does when he's hurt
27:07i break your restaurant and we'll see what williams is made of in these succeeding rounds
27:14you know larry also the mark of a champion or a possible champion is when he's tired fatigue sets in
27:21good left hand good left hook by uh mike williams didn't really do too much but
27:27can't cross the side of the hill good left hand williams is dazed
27:35fights back his legs appear unsteady
27:42both guys are breathing heavily good right hand to the body by williams
27:48all right right here i am turn him loose you're wrestling step back both of you let him go step back
27:58all right here i am stop watching both of you let him go step back
28:01step back
28:11you notice that when mike williams is dancing around the ring he's not really doing anything
28:15he's not too effective he's not really cut out to be a boxer he's more it's much more of a puncher
28:23much more of a banger inside dancing around he really can't do those two things at one time
28:31let him go let him go let him go get off his head get off his head
28:46if i was busted douglas all would throw is just a left jab
28:51it's working why not continue to use it working is understatement
28:57hold up you're wrestling it's not going to support it down
29:00talk about beating a man with one hand the left
29:04you're tied up here i am nice and clean on the break we're hitting on the break step back
29:23douglas has let us mount him a couple of times stop punching both stop wrestling stop wrestling
29:27that's a bad mistake clean douglas is a bit tired now he's thrown a lot of punches
29:35and he's starting to collect some
29:39good exchange at the bell
29:41let's take a look at the flurry early in the round that probably decided that round because
29:56neither man dominated the other after this there's a right to the point of the chin followed by a left
30:02and another right williams holds on here it is from another angle
30:08same result
30:13always don't be one punching
30:15get that combination off get them hands up bump bump bump bump get your hands up move on out
30:20but don't be letting this guy be first don't let him be first
30:24all right right come on now you got everybody back
30:27there is mike tyson
30:34somebody's military or police cap arriving at the arena
30:39all right nice and clean keep it clean ready to enforce his law or arrest someone
30:57but
31:05mike williams seem to weather the storm but again he's making the mistake and are reaching in
31:11he comes in with his chin straight up in the air
31:15trying to get some respect here from buster douglas by uh taking the fight to him
31:19good right hand another good right hand maybe the way for him to fight douglas is to back him up
31:29douglas has been too much for him when he when he williams has been backing up and allowed
31:34douglas to just roll forward throwing punches
31:37because douglas is looking for that one big left jab it's more advantageous for mike williams to
31:44throw combinations because that way at least he can steal the round
31:50that's the best minute of the fight that williams has get off that head left hand
31:55snuck through here i have stop punching stay off the back of the head you see what's happening larry
31:58mike williams is throwing one two three four punches and at least two points in the land
32:03all right let him up on the other hand douglas one jab one right hand
32:08very simply you see a combination
32:12all right here i am stop punching let him go nice and clean he was hacking away at a side of beef
32:25all right here i am stop punching stop punching in there got a warning i got a warning i'm hitting
32:38on the break now you heard that the referee warned douglas for hitting on the break all right break here
32:45i have no hitting on the break if it happens often enough he'll take away a point
32:55williams is fighting like a young man who knows what's going on that he has to turn this around
33:03right now well in doing so the way he's fighting now this is the way he should be fighting douglas
33:08because douglas has become a little lackadaisical not throwing as many punches and starting to stand
33:13straight up himself being caught by combinations thrown by mike williams and those last two punches
33:19from douglas and these are being pushed out instead of snapped out
33:23no hitting on the break nice and clean so perhaps really perhaps we're detecting the first
33:32sign of a change here a sea change and who is going to control the second half of the fight
33:38good right hand at the bell by douglas
33:41how are you doing all right you won the round you won the round you got hit with the right hand
33:54toward the end but you won the round now listen i think you won a couple of rounds in a row but you
33:58know you got to knock the guy out to win the fight you got two knockdowns on you now is that right
34:03right what round was that was that the sixth round seventh coming up all right listen to me hey you
34:09got to hustle now this guy is dark
34:12every day you're doing good keep this guy don't let this guy come back on you you're too good for
34:17that you hear me you're too good come on you're telling me you don't know what it is you got to
34:21get mad boy get mad hustle you listen to me keep your hands moving and hustle get them hands back high
34:27hey don't let this guy don't let this guy beat you now you come on let's put it out baby come on
34:32mouthpiece mouthpiece
34:38both corners sense that possible sea change in the tide of this fight
34:44let's see how the fighters can follow their instructions let's see if douglas is indeed getting
34:50a little bit tired you see douglas trying to pick the pace up trying to pick up the tempo of the fight
34:57but i doubt very seriously that this pace continues more than one minute
35:03on douglas's part on douglas part yes he slowed down a right uppercut
35:09he had called caught a couple of clean body shots earlier
35:12you don't see that powerful jab anymore do you larry it's not coming out as strong and as sharp and
35:27accurate as was in the earlier rounds
35:29you would think as effective as that jab was he'd use his right hand to set up his jab rather than the
35:43other way around i like this from mike with flurry from williams combination two shots to the body and two
35:51shots to the head
35:58here i am holding you holding you holding we'll see if that extra weight is going to slow douglas down
36:03another left hand two three four five six seven eight how you doing mike in his eagerness to get at
36:19douglas he left himself wide open and douglas caught him on the way in
36:23another left hand that douglas gets through his legs not mike williams legs not too steady
36:32yeah he's now he's looking for a place to lean good right catches him
36:36watch for that looping right hand douglas trying to land it but he's getting a little anxious with that
37:06it's the jab that's being doing the job from around one of buster douglas the left hooks are not
37:20effective the right hand's not been landed left hook and a right cross and that looks like the end
37:28stay down stay down i'm sorry just stay here just stay here it is the end just stay here i got it
37:36i feel my doctor jumps into the ring and you can hear the rest all right good good straighten this
37:45leg out for me just straighten them out you feel all right
37:53good sir knock out
37:56hey frank let me see you stand up first wait stand feel all right stand okay can you walk over the corner
38:08here's buster douglas an upset winner and let's take a look and see how he completed the job
38:17as williams got more and more aggressive left he left himself open a clean left hook followed by a right
38:28cross we'll take another look at it
38:30and this finish may or even probably will finish mike williams hopes to get in the ring someday with
38:44mike tyson whether it improves buster douglas hopes or not remains to be seen
38:50douglas is no longer a young hopeful fighter he's a journeyman who has had a shot but he performed
39:01like a real professional tonight ray well he has the power he has the experience i think what he must do
39:08is get better shape so he can be in line for another title shot i mean here he's using his upper body
39:14strength to just annihilate mike williams one thing you know about douglas he comes from a fighting
39:20pedigree his father was a very good middleweight and light heavyweight back in the 50s let's now go
39:28to the ring announcer michael buffer for the official decision ladies and gentlemen the end comes in two
39:35minutes 45 seconds of the seventh round the winner by knockout victory james buster douglas
39:44the knockout victory in our first fight again real soon this evening got the crowd in the mood
39:57for some heavy duty action later on let's now go up to jim lampley
40:06all right thanks very much larry so we have seen one big upset already this evening and now we begin
40:11to countdown once again toward the main event joining me right now is one of boxing's leading
40:16literary lights the former chairman of the new york state athletic commission and now contracted to be
