Danny Romero defends his NABF Super Flyweight Title against Domingo Sosa in the second fight of TVKO HBO PPV
Transcript
00:0013 KOs for Roberto Garcia, and here is how Roy Jones Jr.,
00:05friend and manager to Derek Gaynor, took the decision.
00:15First setback of the evening for Jones.
00:19Will there be another? We'll see later on down the road.
00:23Let's go back upstairs to our host, James Brown. J.B.?
00:26All right, Jim, thank you very much.
00:27And I'm smiling at the comments of Harold Letterman,
00:30remarking about how Derek Gaynor was built much like Manute Boe.
00:33And as such, I thought, although Derek Gaynor may have been cosmetically unattractive in the ring,
00:38tactically, he fought the right kind of fight, staying away from Garcia as long as he could
00:43before delivering those punches.
00:44But nonetheless, Garcia comes away victorious.
00:47Interestingly, Garcia says he has no problems being the stablemate of, of course,
00:51the flashy one, Oscar de la Hoya, and trying to pick and choose from the best assets
00:56that Oscar de la Hoya has.
00:58Also, Garcia mentioned that although he went over to Japan to turn pro at the age of 17,
01:03he wants not to go back anytime soon, only for vacation purposes.
01:07After being pressed by Gary Gaynor, he may well want to do just that.
01:12All right, coming up next, we've got an NABF super flyweight battle
01:15between Domingo Sosa and Danny, Kid Dynamite Romero.
01:19This ought to be a good one, and this will be coming up in just a few moments as we get set
01:23to take you back downstairs to our announcers who sometimes agree, sometimes disagree.
01:28Gil Clancy, Larry Merchant, and Jim Lampley.
01:31And entering the ring is Domingo Sosa.
01:3726 wins, 3 losses, no draws, 18 KOs.
01:43The records of these fighters tonight being brought to you by The Ring, the Bible of Boxing.
01:49And there are the numbers on the fighter from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
01:54He weighed in at 115 pounds, another self-managed fighter
01:58on the order of George Foreman, who is, of course, self-managed.
02:03And there is Danny Kid Lightning Romero,
02:07super flyweight champion for the National Association of Boxing Federations.
02:13He is 20-0, 18 knockouts out of Albuquerque, New Mexico,
02:18trained by his father, Danny Romero Sr.
02:21He's been boxing since he was five years old
02:24and is regarded as an outstanding prospect
02:27with potential world title aspirations down the road.
02:32Tale of the tape between Danny Kid Lightning Romero and Domingo Sosa.
02:37And you can see that there's an 11-year age difference,
02:41so there's an enormous difference in incentive and ambition.
02:44Sosa on the far side of the curve.
02:47Romero is the rising star here.
02:49Two-inch reach advantage for Romero.
02:51Who will eventually be going up in weight and sees himself at this point
02:54as a big, rangy, 115-pound cat.
02:58Larry?
02:59Question is, since he's moving up from the flyweight division,
03:02will he take his considerable punch with him
03:05as he moves up to fighting bigger fights and bigger fighters?
03:09And our punch stat numbers, you can see both fighters roughly as active,
03:16but Romero much more accurate.
03:20And the jabs.
03:22Romero has an edge even there.
03:26NABF rules with Harold Letterman.
03:28Harold?
03:28Danny Romero and Domingo Sosa will box tonight
03:31using the rules of the North American Boxing Federation.
03:3412 rounds.
03:35There is no standing eight count.
03:37The three-knockdown rule is in effect.
03:39He can be saved by the bell in the last round.
03:41Only the referee can stop the fight.
03:44And in case a cut is caused by an accidental headbutt,
03:46and that cut causes the fight to be stopped,
03:48we go to the scorecards.
03:49If the three rounds have been completed,
03:51before that, it's a technical draw.
03:53Jim?
03:53Michael Buffer.
03:55And now, ladies and gentlemen,
03:57from the MGM Grand Garden here in Las Vegas,
04:00Top Rank Incorporated,
04:01along with your king of beers, Budweiser,
04:03present championship boxing
04:05sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission
04:07and the North American Boxing Federation.
04:10The three judges assigned to this bout
04:12will be Art Lurie,
04:14Al Siciliano,
04:15and Kevin McCarl.
04:17NABF supervisor is Gary Langley.
04:19And when the bell rings,
04:20the man in charge of the action,
04:22referee Jay Nady.
04:25And now, ladies and gentlemen,
04:2712 rounds of boxing
04:28for the NABF Super Flyweight Championship.
04:33Introducing Hurst.
04:34Fighting out of the blue corner.
04:36Wearing the white trunks with black trim.
04:38Wearing in at 115 pounds.
04:41He comes to us from the Dominican Republic
04:43with a professional record of 26 victories.
04:4618 by KO against only three defeats.
04:49Ladies and gentlemen,
04:50let's welcome the challenger,
04:52Domingo Sosa.
04:59And his opponent across the ring,
05:01fighting out of the red corner.
05:02Wearing the gold trunks with red letters.
05:05Weighing in also at 115 pounds.
05:08His professional record is 20 and 0.
05:1018 by KO.
05:12Ladies and gentlemen,
05:13from Albuquerque, New Mexico,
05:15presenting the NABF Super Flyweight Champion,
05:21Hidinamita Danny Romero.
05:25They wanted to keep it during the announcement.
05:37You guys have any questions?
05:44I gave you instructions earlier in your dressing room.
05:46We have 12 rounds of boxing.
05:48Now let's go to work.
05:50Sosa, the manager,
05:51forgot to tell Sosa,
05:53the fighter,
05:53to make weight.
05:55He had to take off four pounds
05:56after the weigh-in yesterday,
05:58which is a lot of pounds for a little man.
06:00Any time?
06:01Absolutely.
06:01No question about it.
06:03I really don't know how he did it,
06:04Larry, to tell you the truth.
06:07Fight is scheduled for 12 rounds
06:09because of Danny Romero's
06:11NABF Flyweight
06:12or Super Flyweight Championship.
06:16Take that bucket down, please, Eric.
06:17This is a good test for Danny Romero.
06:19Take that bucket down.
06:19Sosa has only lost three fights in his career
06:21and all the former world champions.
06:24Romero just won that NABF title a month ago,
06:27whereas Domingo Sosa comes in off
06:30a 248-day layoff,
06:33which probably contributed
06:34to the difficulty he had making weight.
06:40One thing I like about the Danny Romero,
06:42he gets leverage on every punch he throws.
06:47He landed a long right hand early,
06:49which caused Sosa to blink just a little bit.
06:53Now Romero goes to the body
06:55and tries to come over the top
06:56with the right hand just missed.
07:01No knockdown.
07:05Sosa was able to stay up
07:07with the help of the ropes.
07:09You got a box!
07:09You got a box!
07:10You got a box!
07:10Kid Dynamite
07:11showing power with both hands.
07:14Over there!
07:15Stay there!
07:18Five!
07:19Six!
07:20Siete!
07:21Ocho!
07:23Nueve!
07:24You okay?
07:25You okay?
07:26You okay?
07:26No.
07:30Jane Nating chooses to stop the fight!
07:34Pretty impressive, Gail.
07:36Very, very impressive.
07:37When you consider
07:38that it took Michael Carver Hall
07:40a lot longer
07:41to get rid of him
07:42than the other two world champions
07:44he went the distance with.
07:45But this Danny Romero,
07:46I mentioned he gets leverage
07:48on every punch.
07:49Every punch.
07:51And the ambition
07:52you mentioned earlier
07:53you could see it
07:55in a half a minute
07:56that this kid is
07:57using his body
07:59as a projectile
08:01to get someplace.
08:02And really,
08:03after the first long right hand
08:04in the opening seconds
08:05it looked to me
08:05as though Sosa
08:06wasn't terribly interested
08:07in feeling that anymore.
08:09And the right hand
08:10that drove him
08:10into the ropes
08:11and almost down
08:12was a sensational
08:13right cross shot.
08:16Unofficially,
08:17it's a minute and six
08:18of the first round.
08:18Let's quickly look
08:19at the replay.
08:20Larry?
08:21Well, you can see
08:22he was down
08:23and probably would have been
08:24better off
08:25taking account
08:26at that point.
08:26But Romero
08:28wastes very few punches here.
08:30Goes to the body,
08:31goes to the head,
08:32to the jaw,
08:33pinpointing,
08:34sharpshooting his shots
08:36patiently.
08:39He's not going to
08:40let him get away.
08:40He says his favorite fighter
08:42is Roberto Duran
08:43and he looked like Duran
08:44with that finishing instinct there.
08:46And when he throws
08:47his punches
08:47he intends them to go
08:49in the front of the head
08:50and out the back.
08:51There's no pulling back
08:52when he punches.
08:53His punches go right
08:54through you.
08:55He makes a commitment
08:56and if you want
08:57to be a champion
08:58you've got to make
08:59a commitment
08:59to your punches.
09:00A proper nickname,
09:02Danny Kid Dynamite Romero.
09:04Let's go to Michael Buffer
09:05for the official particulars.
09:06Ladies and gentlemen,
09:07referee Jay Nady
09:08reaches the count of ten
09:11and stops the bout.
09:12The official time,
09:13one minute,
09:14six seconds
09:15of the very first round.
09:17The winner by
09:18knockout victory.
09:19Still,
09:20the undefeated
09:21NABF
09:22Super Flyweight
09:23champion
09:24Kid Dynamite
09:26and Danny Romero.
09:35115-pound fighter Gil
09:36could move up eventually
09:38to featherweight,
09:39perhaps even to lightweight,
09:40but what punching power
09:42he demonstrated
09:43in that free span.
09:44Jim,
09:45he really excites me,
09:46this kid does.
09:47Not only as a fighter
09:48personality-wise
09:49and everything,
09:50he just has so much
09:51confidence in himself
09:52and his ability
09:53to what he's going to do
09:53when he goes in that ring
09:54and he does it.
09:55And he was terrific
09:56yesterday in our discussion
09:57with him
09:58for a little bit more
09:59of a taste of the personality
10:00of Danny Kidd,
10:01Dynamite Romero.
10:02Let's go up to the ring
10:03and Larry Merchant.
10:04Danny,
10:05congratulations.
10:06It didn't take you long.
10:07You didn't want to give
10:08these fans much of a show
10:09here, did you?
10:09No,
10:10while we came out
10:10to destroy
10:11and that's what happened.
10:13Did the first punch
10:14you hit him hurt him?
10:16Because it looked like
10:17from that right hand on
10:18he wasn't very interested.
10:19Right,
10:20you know,
10:20the first shot
10:20that he had,
10:21the big first right hand
10:22took away everything he had.
10:24You see,
10:24he could take shots
10:25so he was laying on the ropes
10:26taking big shots
10:27that I was bombing.
10:29What is your ambition now?
10:31Where do you go from here?
10:32Our ambition
10:32and our all-time goal
10:34is to win a world championship.
10:35I don't care who it's against,
10:36where it's at,
10:37hopefully it can happen here
10:38on my great state
10:39of Albuquerque,
10:39New Mexico.
10:40That is the biggest ambition
10:42and with Big Bob Aaron
10:43we're going to do it.
10:44Thank you very much.
10:46He's a hot rod fan
10:48and it ain't going to
10:49take him very long
10:50to get where he wants to go.
10:51James?
10:53All right, Larry,
10:54thank you very much.
10:55I remember from
10:55the conversation yesterday
10:56with Kid Dynamite
10:58that he said
10:58he leads a pretty
10:59boring lifestyle
11:00because he is so committed
11:02to becoming the best
11:03possible boxer
11:04that he can
11:04so therefore
11:05he stays away
11:06from the bad influences.
11:07He's focused only on boxing.
11:09The only outlet that he has,
11:10as Larry Merchant mentioned,
11:12is in fact
11:12adding to his collection
11:14of hot rods.
11:15He wants a few
11:16vintage model Mercedes
11:17and he looks like
11:18he's well on his way
11:19to making that happen.
11:20He is in fact committed
11:21to also giving
11:22the right message
11:23to school kids
11:24working throughout
11:25the state of New Mexico
11:26speaking to school kids
11:27about staying away
11:28from drugs
11:28and in fact
11:29doing the right thing.
11:31All the fundamentals
11:32that help you
11:32to pursue
11:33and attain your objective.
11:35Well, we've got
11:35a lot more coming.
11:36Of course,

12:23and the belt holder
12:24that is.
12:25And that one,
12:25of course,
12:25is Oscar de la Hoya.
12:27He'll be taking on
12:27a very tough competitor
12:28in the person
12:29of Carl Griffith.
12:30Now, the question
12:31about de la Hoya,
12:33is he the real thing?
12:34Everyone knows
12:35that he's got
12:35all the charisma,
12:36an attractive-looking boxer,
12:38very flashy,
12:39good boxer-puncher,
12:40but he hasn't had
12:41the stiffest of competition.
12:42Many people thought
12:43that might have been
12:44against Paez,
12:45his last one.
12:46Most folks say,
12:46hey, this is a tough one
12:47he's got coming up
12:48right now.
12:49For those who will
12:50set the stage
12:50a little bit more,
12:51more insight,

12:59Oscar de la Hoya,
13:00you're coming up.
13:01Let's go.
13:02Let's go.
13:02We'll be back home.
13:03Let's go.
13:03Let's go.
