01:30Mickey turned out to be the right mouse, in the right place, at the right time.
01:37From the feisty little guy in Steamboat Willie to the veteran character actor in Mickey's Christmas Carol, he's become more and more likable.
01:48Good morning, Mr. Scrooge.
01:50The 30s were Mickey's golden age.
01:54Of the 119 cartoons that Mickey starred in, 87 were produced in the 1930s.
02:00And what a decade it was.
02:02The 30s had barely begun, and there was Walt Disney receiving a special Academy Award for the creation of Mickey Mouse.
02:08Then, right in the middle of the decade, Mickey debuted in his first color cartoon, and audiences were captivated again.
02:17But color wasn't the primary attraction.
02:19Mickey was.
02:20He played everything from gunslinger to taxi driver.
02:24From violin virtuoso to swashbuckler.
02:30Mickey moved from playing the lead to straight man.
02:33In cartoons so rich, his supporting characters were given their own shots at stardom.
02:38At your service, sir.
02:41You break them, we fix them.
02:45Mickey's humor grew from the situations in which he found himself.
02:49Essentially, from good old-fashioned sight gags that added to the story and provided good-natured fun for a depression-weary nation.
02:57You ain't paid the rent.
03:00Whoa, whoa, whoa, we'll get it.
03:01Oh, we'll get it.
03:03In 1935, a mere seven years after his screen debut, the New York Times magazine said,
03:09Mickey is the best-known and most popular international figure of his day.
03:14No doubt about it, Mickey was a star.
03:17Popular Mickey merchandise of all kinds told kids what they should and shouldn't do.
03:22So Mickey himself had to serve as a good example.
03:25A difficult job for a mouse more used to good old-fashioned gags.
03:29Then Walt Disney's idea for animating The Sorcerer's Apprentice evolved into Fantasia,
03:36an animated feature based on classical music conducted by the renowned composer Leopold Stokowski.
03:42I was doing this, The Sorcerer's Apprentice with Mickey Mouse, and I happened to have dinner one night with Stokowski.
03:48Mr. Stokowski said, oh, I would love to conduct that for you, you know.
03:54Well, that led to not only doing this one little short subject, but it got us involved where I did all of Fantasia,
04:01and before I knew it, I ended up spending 400-some-odd thousand dollars getting music with Stokowski.
04:09Fantasia was an impressive role for Mickey,
04:11as well as an enduring tribute to the skill and imagination of Walt Disney, his artists, and animators.
04:22World War II.
04:24Disney's contributions included posters, insignia, and even an important secret code.
04:29The password of the Allied Forces on D-Day, June 6, 1944, was, you guessed it, Mickey Mouse.
04:36Throughout the 40s and 50s, Mickey continued to be a goodwill ambassador,
04:41while Donald, Pluto, and Goofy took more and more of the pratfalls,
04:47and the curtain calls, too.
04:55In 1955, the Mickey Mouse Club produced a response television had never seen before.
05:01Children and adults everywhere were singing its anthem.
05:04Hey there, hi there, ho there, you're as welcome as can be.
05:09M-I-C-K-E-W-O-N-M-I-U-S-E.
05:12Then came the 60s and 70s, and Mickey's role as official host to the millions of visitors at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
05:21And in 1978, a ceremony that gave him his own star on Hollywood's celebrated Walk of Fame.
05:27Then, in 1983, Mickey made his triumphant return to the screen in the Academy Award-nominated feature at Mickey's Christmas Carol.
05:37It was his first film role in 30 years, and a bravura performance.
05:41Over 55 years in show business, and still going strong.
05:46Yes, Mickey definitely was the right mouse, in the right place, at the right time.
05:51As Walt Disney once said, we didn't burden him with any social symbolism.
05:56Mickey was simply a little personality assigned to the purposes of laughter.
06:00Mickey was simply a little personality assigned to the world.
06:30Yeah-ho, we sail the stormy sea.
06:34We're ruck and ruck, I know our stuff, our witness to our wing.
06:38Yeah-ho, yeah-ho, we sail the seven seas.
06:41And our captain's the temple with the legs.
06:46The captain's got a girl, the captain's got a girl, the captain's got a girl.
06:53The captain's got a girl, whoops.
