02:00In these, the action would fit the music, a reversal of the concept established in the Mickey Mouse series.

02:11At the next gag meeting, someone proposed silly symphonies, and a new series was born.

02:16The first silly symphony was the skeleton dance.

02:20It was an instant success, although one Los Angeles theater owner declared,

02:29The silly symphonies continued for a ten-year period.

02:32Humor and rhythm played important roles.

02:34There were such titles as Frolicking Fish, Arctic Antics,

02:39and Egyptian melodies.

02:49Even the settings were caught up in the rhythm.

02:51This perpetual motion distinguished the silly symphonies from their competitors,

02:55and Walt Disney trained a whole new generation of animators.

02:58Now, we were dealing in motion, movement, and the flow of movement, the flow of things, you know,

03:04action, reaction, all of that.

03:06So we had to set up our own school.

03:09And out of that school have come the artists that now make up my staff here,

03:13and more than that, the artists that make up all of the, most all of the cartoon outfits in Hollywood.

03:18Color came to the Silly Symphony Series in 1932, with the release of Flowers and Trees.

03:27It was the first cartoon to win the Academy Award,

03:31and Walt went on to win six more Oscars for the Silly Symphony Series.

03:37After the advent of color, Walt Disney began experimenting with characterization,

03:41plot, and photographic effects.

03:44The Three Little Pigs was one of Walt's most successful symphonies,

03:47instilling real character into cartoon animals.

03:50I'll punch him in the nose.

03:52I'll kick him in the chin.

03:53We'll put him on the stock.

03:56Later, Disney turned to popular fairy tales for material,

04:00including a jazzy Old King Cole.

04:05And the Pied Piper.

04:06Still other symphonies, like Woodland Cafe and Musicland,

04:17were delightful satires of movie musicals.

04:23The 1937 invention of the multi-plane camera led to remarkable depth in animated films.

04:29The Old Mill and Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod were examples of silly symphonies that achieved startling realism,

04:36and led to the later development of Disney's full-length animated films.

04:40The styles and techniques developed for the Silly Symphony Series were applied to such classics as

04:46Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,

04:48Pinocchio,

04:51and Fantasia.

05:04As Disney moved into a regular schedule of feature-length releases,

05:09the Silly Symphony Series was phased out of production.

05:11Truly memorable, the Silly Symphonies were universally popular during their 10-year lifespan,

05:20and an important cornerstone in the Disney legacy.

05:25They were a proving ground for the animated features to come,

05:29and perhaps the richest products of the Disney Dream Factory during the 1930s.
