00:00The 2018 summer box office is headed for near record levels, even as Hollywood braces for a
00:10move that will reshape the film business, with Disney continuing its domination while its bid
00:14to take over 20th Century Fox moves ahead. The season's revenue was pacing 15 to 16 percent
00:19ahead of last summer, when ticket sales fell to their lowest level in more than a decade,
00:23according to Comscore. Through June 26, domestic summer revenue clocked in at $2 billion,
00:28and at its current pace, summer 2018 could come close to matching the May-August stretch in 2013,
00:33when revenue hit a record $4.8 billion at the domestic box office. Disney's movies account
00:38for more than $1.2 billion of the current $2 billion total, amounting to a huge 60 percent market share.
00:44Topping the list of summer's top money makers is Disney and Marvel's Avengers Infinity War,
00:48which has taken in more than $670 million in North America and $2.032 billion globally.
00:54Disney and Pixar's Incredibles 2 boasts an early domestic total of $384 million since its June
00:5915th opening, followed by Fox's Deadpool 2 with a domestic total of $306.2 million.
01:05Solo, A Star Wars Story, fell far short of expectations for Lucasfilm and Disney, but it has
01:09still added $202.6 million to the bottom line in North America. Universal's Jurassic World
01:14Fallen Kingdom, which just opened domestically on June 22, will soon overtake Solo, having grossed
01:19$193.4 million through June 28. Meanwhile, the female skewing Ocean's 8 from Warner Brothers
01:25and Book Club from Paramount have racked up $105.6 million and $65.3 million, respectively.
01:31Aside from Solo, the big loser this summer has been comedy. The genre has been under siege for
01:35more than two years, and 2018 hasn't brought much relief. No comedy has managed to break the
01:40$55 million mark this summer. Melissa McCarthy's Life of the Party tops that list so far, with $52.3 million.
01:47Despite a lack of comedic success, the summer season has cemented a year-over-year gain.
01:52Earlier this week, 2018 domestic revenue hit $6 billion faster than any year in history.
01:57However, the wealth hasn't been spread around evenly. So far this year, Disney is coming out
02:02way in front of the other five major Hollywood studios with its 36 percent market share.
02:06Fox, the studio Disney is hoping to buy, sits at 12 percent, Warner Brothers at 11.5 percent,
02:11Universal at 9.5 percent, Sony at 7 percent and Paramount at 5.8 percent.
02:16While Jurassic Park Fallen Kingdom was widely considered the final A-list tentpole of summer
02:212018, the July and August calendar is filled with potential breakouts, including Skyscraper,
02:26Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Mission Impossible Fallout, Hotel Transylvania 3,
02:32Crazy Rich Asians and Black Klansman, among others. To read more on this story, head to THR.com
