While a record number of summer tentpoles crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, the season is headed for a troublesome finish as the Labor Day weekend approaches.

00:14contributing to a 6% downturn at the domestic box office so far for 2019.

00:26Even though a number of tent poles like Aladdin crossed the $1 billion mark

00:29at the global box office this summer, the season is headed for a troublesome finish.

00:33This puts additional pressure on films coming out from September to December

00:36to close the 6% year-to-date gap over 2018.

00:40Only one original summer event feature, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,

00:43crossed the $100 million threshold at the domestic box office.

00:54But movies that got lost include the Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen comedy Longshot,

01:09Contributing to the bummer summer were a number of franchise installments

01:18The gap between the haves and the have-nots at the box office has never been greater,

01:30and neither has the domination by one major Hollywood studio, Disney.

01:34Disney commands three of the top five performing summer films in North America,

01:37The Lion King, Toy Story 4, and Aladdin.

01:41Globally, all three have earned north of $1 billion alongside Sony's Spider-Man Far From Home.
