00:00PBS Kids opens worlds of possibilities for all children, thanks to PBS stations and viewers like you.
00:30Friends to know, and ways to grow, a written rainbow, I can be anything, take a look, it's in a book, a written rainbow, written rainbow.
01:00There is nothing more wonderful, more exciting, more marvelous, than the birth of a baby.
01:18Parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters all gather to say, welcome, we love you, we're so glad you're here.
01:30The day you are born is a time to celebrate with presents and picture-taking hugs and kisses.
01:42That day is really your first birthday, and it's a very important day for you and your family.
01:48It's also an important day for the rest of the world.
01:52Here's a story about how the whole world celebrates every time a new baby is born.
01:58It's called, On the Day You Were Born.
02:05On the Day You Were Born
02:08By Deborah Frazier
02:11Read by Patrick Stewart
02:16On the Eve of your birth, word of your coming passed from animal to animal.
02:28The reindeer, who told the Arctic terns, who told the humpback whales, who told the Pacific salmon, who told the monarch butterflies, who told the green turtles, who told the European eel, who told the busy garden warblers.
02:52And the marvelous news migrated worldwide.
02:58While you waited in darkness, tiny knees curled to chin, the Earth and her creatures with the sun and the moon all moved in their places, each ready to greet you the very first moment of the very first day you arrived.
03:19On the day you were born, the round planet Earth turned toward your morning sky, whirling past darkness, spinning the night into light.
03:33On the day you were born, gravity's strong pull held you to the Earth with a promise that you would never float away.
03:46While deep in space, the burning sun sent up towering flames, lighting your sky from dawn until dusk.
03:58On the day you were born, the moon pulled on the ocean below, and wave by wave, a rising tide washed the beaches clean for your footprints.
04:13While far out at sea, clouds swelled with water drops, sailed to shore on a wind, and rained you a welcome across the Earth's green lands.
04:28On the day you were born, the Earth turned, the moon pulled, the sun flared, and then with a push, you slipped out of the dark quiet.
04:50Where suddenly you could hear a circle of people singing, welcome to the spinning world, the people sang as they washed your new tiny hands.
05:04Welcome to the green earth, the people sang as they wrapped your wet, slippery body.
05:13And as they held you close, they whispered into your open, curving ear, we are so glad you've come.
05:23Hey, welcome to the world.
05:32Isn't he something?
05:36Just yesterday he was tucked safely inside of his mother's body and now he's right here in my arms.
05:43Already he can yawn, sleep, drink, and cry.
05:48From the moment he was born, his tiny body was ready for the world.
05:54This is a miracle that begins when the baby starts to grow and change inside its mother's womb.
06:02If you could look inside the womb, you would see a tiny heart beating strong.
06:16And then, as time passed, you'd see eyes beginning to form, veins carrying blood, and hands, and feet developing.
06:28You'd see the twisty umbilical cord, which carries food from the mother to her child.
06:37So the baby will develop and grow and be ready in nine months to join the world.
06:43And while all these changes are quietly taking place inside, a whole lot is happening outside as well.
06:54A family is expecting a baby they can hardly wait to meet.
06:58I'm Kay Estes. My husband Tom and I have three girls already.
07:02We have Kendall, who is eleven.
07:05We have Casey, who's three and a half.
07:07Who is this?
07:08Look, who's that grin and fool?
07:10Who is that?
07:11We have Erica, who's five.
07:13And I'm getting ready to have my fourth little girl.
07:18And this little baby will be Jessica.
07:21Daddy!
07:23I thought it would be nice to have another kid to be around to look up.
07:28Because I was sort of looking forward to helping Mom because I like to hold the little babies.
07:33And I like to dress them because I like to see the little cute clothes that they wear.
07:38Come on, you guys. It's time to go to the doctor.
07:41Come on.
07:43When a mommy goes to the doctor to be checked to make sure her baby is healthy,
07:49you're not sick, you don't feel bad, you usually feel pretty good.
07:54He's just making sure that the baby that's growing inside of you,
07:58who starts out this little and gets this big,
08:01is growing at the right rate and gaining enough weight.
08:04Since Kay is in her eighth month,
08:07Dr. Luciani will examine her one last time before Jessica is born.
08:12A couple of things always happen.
08:14You lay down on a table, the doctor comes in and listens to the baby's heartbeat.
08:18Make sure that it's strong and even.
08:21He will measure your belly each time to make sure that you're growing properly.
08:25I guess she's attached at a different place.
08:28Thank you, Deb.
08:31And usually for every week of pregnancy, it's about a centimeter in growth.
08:36And right now we have the top of the uterus,
08:39which is the home of the baby, at 38 and a half centimeters.
08:44So that is perfect growth.
08:46Even though Jessica is still inside,
08:49the family can actually hear her heart beating.
08:52Let's get everybody together here.
08:53And we're going to listen to the baby's heartbeat this morning.
08:56We're going to put a little bit of jelly on mom's belly.
08:58And this doesn't hurt mom and it doesn't hurt the baby.
09:01It just makes listening to the heartbeat a lot easier.
09:04So we'll do that.
09:06And let me get the machine that we listen to the heartbeat with.
09:11Okay, so the baby's heartbeat is around 141, 143.
09:25And that's a nice normal average heartbeat.
09:28Okay, so now we're going to do the ultrasound that we talked about.
09:31And once again, we'll put some jelly on mom's belly.
09:34All right?
09:35And this helps us to see the baby.
09:38During the ultrasound, a special machine forms a picture of the baby growing inside.
09:44Now we're going to see the body of the baby.
09:48This is the baby's body.
09:50We know that the baby now is in a head first position.
09:53Cool.
09:54And if you look real carefully, we can see the baby's heart beating right here.
09:59Right there?
10:00There it is.
10:01Ah!
10:02Isn't that nice?
10:03That heartbeat is probably in the 140 or...
10:06It's really incredible to know that you can even pick up that kind of life inside you.
10:10It's a different experience unless you've been there and seen it before.
10:14Until you go through it yourself, it's very difficult to describe.
10:17Now we're going to see the body.
10:19I can't wait to see what she looks like because I know she'll be different.
10:22I can't wait to see how she'll act because I know she'll be an individual.
10:26And she will bring a little piece of joy and a little piece of a wholeness to our family
10:33with the knowledge that her experiences will enrich us and ours will enrich her.
10:39And I really look forward to it.
10:41Okay.
10:42And it should work out very nicely.
10:43We'll have a nice, healthy and happy baby.
10:45Alrighty?
10:46Mm-hmm.
10:47So that'll be good.
10:54It's exciting to have a new brother or sister on the way.
10:57But it can also be scary if you don't know what to expect or how to help.
11:02That's why, before Jessica is born, her sisters are going to a special class for kids
11:07who are expecting a new baby in their family.
11:09What they call anatomically correct, okay?
11:12They'll learn many ways to help take care of the baby, like holding her, talking to her,
11:19and giving her a bottle.
11:20You want to always have the baby up in your elbow a little bit high, okay?
11:25You want her almost in the sitting position.
11:28Then with the bottle, okay, you're going to take it and make sure that the milk in the bottle
11:34fills the whole nipple.
11:35So you want to angle the bottle so the top is towards the bottom, okay?
11:41And put it right into the baby's mouth like this.
11:44So if your baby has to burp, okay?
11:47You've just fed your baby.
11:48What you want to do is basically just change positions.
11:51So by feeding the baby in this position, just by bringing the baby up,
11:56you're moving or changing the position of the baby.
11:58After babies eat and burp, they almost always need a diaper change.
12:03Because sometimes new babies have to be changed 10 to 14 times a day.
12:08Okay, what we're going to do now is we're going to change a baby.
12:12You have to put the tapes in the back.
12:14You have to pull this up through the middle.
12:17All right?
12:19Kendall, maybe you can help.
12:21I think because you're her older sister, you've already gone through this.
12:25We're going to do is see what you're doing.
12:28Once Kendall, Casey, and Erica master diaper changing,
12:31they head down the hall to see the hospital room where their mom will stay
12:35when she comes to give birth to Jessica.
12:38Because I want to show you the room your mom is going to be in.
12:43The hospital room looks a lot like a regular bedroom.
12:46Okay?
12:47I want to show you a few special things about this room.
12:50Your mom's going to have a telephone right in her room.
12:53She'll be able to call you or you'll be able to call her.
12:57Another thing is that these beds move.
13:00Who would like to try it first?
13:02Me.
13:03Push that button.
13:04That'll bring the bed up.
13:05The bed moves up and down so their mom will always be comfortable.
13:09And there's a remote control TV so Kay can watch her favorite shows in the hospital.
13:18Okay, let's go down and see the new babies.
13:23Look at this baby.
13:24Most kids get to see their new brother or sister for the first time here,
13:27at the big nursery window.
13:29Do you know why we put little caps on the babies?
13:31So they don't get cold.
13:32That's right, because new babies, their body temperature is very unstable.
13:37Now, Casey, Erica, and Kendall are all set for Jessica to arrive.
13:41But the big question is, when?
13:44Do you want contractions?
13:45No.
13:46No fluid.
13:47Doctors can guess at the date that a baby will be born, but nobody really knows for sure.
13:53As the due date gets closer and closer, families have a lot of getting ready to do.
13:59This?
14:00Uh-huh.
14:01See?
14:02This was Kendall's when she was a baby.
14:05They decide which old clothes to pass down to Jessica.
14:09Mom, I was so happy from wearing this.
14:13You were?
14:14You remember that outfit?
14:15Yeah.
14:16They shop for new things the baby will need.
14:18And I wanted to show you this.
14:19I wanted something that you could lay the baby back in so that she can sleep,
14:23and then something that, you know, she can sit up in and it's lighter.
14:26And they talk about what to expect in the next couple of weeks.
14:30Three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine more days.
14:35Will we be able to visit you and Jessica after you have the baby?
14:40Oh, sure.
14:41And you can hold Jessica.
14:42Do you remember how to hold her, Casey?
14:43Do you remember?
14:44Casey, show Mommy how you do it.
14:45Show us how.
14:46With the head.
14:47You've got to be very careful with the baby.
14:49And remember, Erica, what are you going to do with the baby when she comes home?
14:53I'm going to feed her a diaper.
14:55You are?
14:56I'm going to change the baby's diaper.
14:59And finally, preparing Jessica's room.
15:24Kay has had very quick deliveries with the other three girls,
15:28so there really isn't much time to lose once she says it is it.
15:32Tom?
15:33You okay?
15:34I think we better get going.
15:36Did you call the doctor?
15:37Yeah, I just talked to them.
15:38They're about five minutes apart now.
15:40I think you better go.
15:41Okay.
15:42Well, let's go.
15:43When I've been just about to go into labor, I felt a pluck like a guitar string inside of me.
15:49And I knew then that, you know, I had to change quickly and get to the hospital.
15:56Oh, my God, I guess this is it, eh?
16:01Good morning.
16:02Good morning.
16:03How are you guys doing today?
16:04Good.
16:05Everything good?
16:06Good.
16:07Some are so good, yep.
16:08How do you feel?
16:09Good.
16:10I just had a good one.
16:11Okay.
16:12How often are they coming then?
16:13About every five minutes, I think.
16:14All right, excellent.
16:15The moment of truth is almost here?
16:16Yeah, I think so.
16:17Excellent.
16:18All right, the baby's heartbeat on the monitor is beautiful, all right?
16:21The rate is about 151, and if you look closely, you can see that the baby's heartbeat
16:25is accelerating a little bit during the course of...
16:28Okay.
16:29That's excellent.
16:30Oh, okay.
16:31It means the baby looks to be very healthy.
16:32Oh, in other words, she's reacting to her stimuli.
16:34Okay, so that's good.
16:35Right, so that's looking good, and there's no decelerations with contractions, so everything
16:38looks great.
16:39Oh, okay.
16:40Okay.
16:41So we'll keep an eye on things.
16:42We'll watch the baby on the fetal monitor.
16:43We'll watch your contractions, so we'll see what's cooking for the next hour or two,
16:47and I'm sure within a few hours we should have a baby.
16:49Okay.
16:50All right?
16:51Okay.
16:52All right, I'll see you in a little bit.
16:53If you're closer and closer to delivering the baby, the nurse will be there on one side
16:56of you, and typically your husband's on the other side.
16:59You want to know about this one, Tara?
17:00Sure.
17:01So you come from the beginning of this contraction to the beginning of the next contraction, and
17:05that tells you how far apart they are.
17:07So if you go one minute, two, three, about four and a half minutes apart, and eventually
17:12it's going to get closer.
17:13They're going to be every two minutes.
17:15Okay?
17:16A contraction is a tightening and hardening of your stomach muscle.
17:19It feels like your whole area of your tummy is tightening into a tight ball.
17:24And as they come quicker and faster, there's pressure that's pushed down lower and lower
17:31onto your cervix, which is the little muscle that holds the baby inside of you until it's
17:36ready to open and let her out.
17:38As the cervix muscle stretches and the baby pushes down further, it really starts to hurt.
17:48Kay concentrates on controlling the pain.
17:53She knows this is a natural part of having a baby, but it's still very hard work.
18:02As Kay breathes harder, a plastic tube brings her extra oxygen.
18:08Why don't you just tell Jessica to cooperate?
18:14In the last stages of birth, after you pretty much have ridden the worst of the waves of
18:20pain and you start to feel this pushing sensation where you want to bear down on your tummy muscles
18:26and get that baby out of you.
18:29Kay, we're going to put you into sort of a delivery position.
18:33It's almost time now.
18:35The doctor asks Kay to prepare for the final phase of delivery when she'll push the baby out.
18:41Yeah, just hold her legs up, okay?
18:44So that we can get this thing off of your hair of AIDS.
18:48When you do push down on that muscle to get the baby out of you, it feels like you might tear yourself open.
18:56And so you hold back and you don't push as hard as you should or you're not as effective as you should
19:02and the doctor's voice comes in and gets through to you that if you just relax and let that feeling not scare you
19:09and push the baby out, the baby's going to be safer because your muscles will be more relaxed
19:13and you're not going to hurt yourself.
19:16The doctor puts on his gloves, ties his scrubs, and gets ready to deliver the baby.
19:26Now the rest is up to Jessica and Kay.
19:30Nice and hard.
19:31Come on.
19:32We're about one minute to baby.
19:35Hard, hard, hard.
19:36Let's go.
19:37Keep going.
19:38Nice and easy.
19:39Nice and easy.
19:40This is when the mother and the baby work the hardest.
19:43The baby pushes, the mother pushes, and the muscle opens all the way to let Jessica out.
19:49Some suction right here.
19:50Suck out the baby.
19:51Is she out, Tommy?
19:52The head's out.
19:53Oh.
19:54Good suction.
19:55Good.
19:56Nice effort.
19:57We're going to do that.
19:58Now we're going to bring down the shoulder.
19:59So you give me a little push.
20:00It's a hair.
20:01Nice job.
20:02Beautiful.
20:03Okay.
20:04Here comes Jessica, with a little bit of blood on her head from the journey, which will
20:18wash right off.
20:19Oh.
20:20Here we go.
20:21Congratulations.
20:22Good.
20:23Good.
20:24Good.
20:25Beautiful.
20:26Beautiful.
20:27Jessica Coulson.
20:28Jessica's a pretty baby.
20:29Oh.
20:30Oh.
20:31Oh.
20:32Oh.
20:33Oh.
20:34Oh.
20:35Okay.
20:36Beautiful.
20:37Happy birthday.
20:38Now that's a pretty baby.
20:39She comes out and you hear her cry, and as you hear her cry, this white-covered, somewhat
20:47slippery-looking little thing is staring at you with these eyes that do this.
20:51They hand her to you, and it's just the most incredible thing that I have ever felt
20:58in my entire life.
20:59Tom, you didn't get a picture of Dr. L holding her or anything?
21:01Mm-hmm.
21:02Yeah, I'll finish up here, and we'll take a little family portrait.
21:06Those hands.
21:07Let me see your hands.
21:09Oh, my goodness.
21:10Oh, it's tough stuff.
21:11You didn't feel like coming out yet, did you, Sugar?
21:12No.
21:13Are we going to have fun?
21:14You just want to hold the baby and give the baby as much love as you can immediately.
21:24Oh, darling.
21:25Yeah.
21:26Yes.
21:27Okay.
21:28Get it cleaned up, and then you can get her on if you don't.
21:33Okay.
21:34Yep.
21:35It's sticky.
21:36I don't remember it being so sticky.
21:38I know, but I don't remember it being so sticky.
21:41Did it come out for you?
21:43Now it's time for Jessica to go to the nursery.
21:47Very tenderly, the nurses wash her and weigh her.
21:51Jessica cries just like a baby.
22:00Everything is so new.
22:03Tom stays with Jessica to let her know he loves her and everything will be all right.
22:12And here come the girls to greet their brand new baby sister.
22:17At last.
22:18Look, it's Jessica.
22:19Daddy!
22:20Daddy!
22:21Baby Jessica takes her place in the Estes family.
22:23That's your baby Jessica.
22:24Are you going to bite your feet?
22:25Casey.
22:26Here she comes.
22:31It's a whole bunch of different emotions, and I've told people, it's just one of those
22:39things, it's truly a beautiful thing.
22:42Oh, you guys.
22:44I see a little bit of everybody in their face.
22:47After nine months of waiting, they are all so glad she's here.
22:54You know, you struggle and you get a little panicky and the pain hurts and then, you know,
22:59the little head pops out and it's like, oh my God.
23:02Everything goes away.
23:03She's sleeping.
23:04She's sleeping.
23:05She's taking a nap.
23:09When a baby is born in your family, lots of things change.
23:13There's this amazing new person in your life and suddenly you're a big brother or a big sister.
23:18Well, here are some books that will help you figure out what to expect if your family is expecting.
23:23But, you don't have to take my word for it.
23:27Hi, my name's Juliana.
23:30Do you ever wonder how you were born?
23:33Well, this book tells you.
23:35It's called How You Were Born.
23:37This book takes you step by step from the time you were a tiny speck until you were born.
23:46This is what you looked like when you were growing inside your mother.
23:50You could already suck your thumb.
23:53Isn't that amazing?
23:55You got bigger and bigger.
23:58Your mom's stomach got bigger, too.
24:01Before you were born, your mom felt you kicking.
24:05Pretty soon, the big moment is here.
24:09If you're curious about how you were born, pick up this book.
24:13It has great facts.
24:16Hi, my name is Marvin.
24:18And I would like to tell you a story about one round moon and a star for me.
24:23This is how it goes.
24:25One warm, sunny day, mama called the big brother and said,
24:30There's a brand new baby in our hut today.
24:35Later on, three women came carrying buckets of water for the baby.
24:41The big brother felt like he didn't exist.
24:44And everyone loved the baby more than him.
24:48Then his father said,
24:50We love you as much as we love him.
24:53And tonight, when the sun goes down,
24:56I will show you the big round moon and a star just for you.
25:01If you liked this story as much as I did, you won't want to miss it.
25:06One round moon and a star for me.
25:11Babies are very cute, but sometimes they can be troublemakers,
25:15just like the baby in this book, a teeny tiny baby.
25:20Babies need lots of attention.
25:23And this baby knows how to get what it wants.
25:27The baby cries and everyone comes running.
25:31Babies like to be fed constantly, 24 hours a day.
25:36And when the baby's not eating, it sleeps.
25:40Baby likes to visit around the neighborhood.
25:43I remember being a baby.
25:45I wonder if I was this much trouble.
25:49I'm Stephanie, and I think taking care of babies is very hard work.
25:53But sometimes babies can be fun, just like this book, a teeny tiny baby.
25:59Every new life is a reason to rejoice.
26:07So the day that you are born is a day for celebration.
26:11There's a brand new person in the world.
26:13A child who will make us smile and say, welcome.
26:16We are so glad that you're here.
26:20I'll see you next time.
26:22I can go anywhere.
