00:01
Kevin, a penalty shootout for you against Reading City in the League Cup,
00:04
but you created plenty of chances there to win that match, really, didn't you?
00:08
Yeah, I think we've got to be going in more than one up, for sure.
00:12
There's a huge chance on 45 minutes that probably changes the game a little bit.
00:19
But then there's been, I think we've hit the ball twice, two chances or one-on-one.
00:24
You know, they weren't just half chances, they were big chances,
00:27
but we looked comfortable, we played some really good football first half,
00:30
we were actually really good.
00:32
It was probably one of our better performances.
00:34
We've not been bad, but we've not sort of finished when we needed to.
00:38
The difference was we had two or three half chances we didn't take,
00:42
kept going and there was a really good passage of play
00:45
and Josh Milo and Anne Gale Zapata in the first half were really effective
00:50
and they were both involved in the goal.
00:53
So I was going in 1-0 and then we came out
00:56
and there was another two or three chances for us to probably go ahead
01:00
and two goal lead, didn't get it.
01:03
And then Merrifield probably scores the more difficult header
01:06
and 2-0 we were probably cruising.
01:09
And for a side that's lacking confidence and wins,
01:13
cruising's a difficult position to be in
01:15
because you don't really know how to cruise, how to control the game.
01:18
And then I think the problem was the two goals for us came from us having possession
01:25
in our defensive third and giving it up too easily.
01:30
We've said that we needed to get to second balls and track back better in the transition,
01:37
which we have, but you don't have a chance to do that if you lose it in your defensive third.
01:41
So, you know, and that's from loss of possession and then a pass just going straight to their players
01:48
and then making it too easy for them.
01:50
The two goals were soft from our point of giving the ball away
01:53
and also soft from our point defensively once we'd given the ball away as well.
01:57
Yeah, I guess, as you say, you summed it all up really accurately there.
02:01
I mean, you know, there's obviously going to be frustration with that,
02:04
but you say you played some really nice football and created plenty,
02:06
but it is those margins, isn't it, of being clinical, getting the third,
02:10
and then, as you say, just coughing up possession a couple of times in your own third
02:13
and getting punished really, isn't it?
02:15
Yeah, look, and when it goes to penalties, it is what it is.
02:18
But we've also got to say that we've missed three from six as well,
02:22
which is, listen, you're not critical when it gets to that stage
02:25
because it is one of those things, but if you're missing half of them,
02:29
you're going to struggle to go through at that point
02:31
and it shouldn't really have got to that point, that's the thing.
02:34
So, again, we've got some questions to ask.
02:36
We now don't play Saturday, which is probably not a good thing
02:40
because, you know, we go to Guildford next Wednesday
02:43
who have just started picking up results
02:45
and that'll be a tough away trip, especially for a team
02:48
that's struggling to get a result like us.
02:51
But, you know, I think there needs to be a bit of accountability this week.
02:56
It's not often that I ask people to step forward and say stuff,
02:59
but I expect to hear from a couple this week and say I've played a part in that
03:03
because there was just a couple of things that are just not acceptable,
03:06
especially in the way that things are going for us.
03:09
It's like, you know, I don't mind people trying things and taking risks, etc.
03:13
But there's a time and a place on the pitch where you do it
03:16
and some of the things weren't even risks.
03:19
It was more just really bad decisions.
03:22
And at this level, you can't do it.
03:24
You just can't do it.
03:25
And then I think the two goals, we've not got tight enough
03:28
and we've not made enough effort to stop it.
03:32
As you say now, it's over a week to that Guildford game next Wednesday, isn't it?
03:36
So how's the programme sort of looking, sort of building up towards that then?
03:41
Well, we don't play Saturday, so we'll train on Thursday.
03:45
And then obviously we normally train Tuesday and Thursday.
03:47
So we're unlikely to train Tuesday next week with the game on the Wednesday.
03:52
So really, we need to get in here Thursday, get around each other,
03:56
do things properly, set up, do the things that we want to look to try and do on Wednesday,
04:01
which won't be much different from what we've done today.
04:03
It'll be a more difficult pitch, obviously.
04:06
But it's work ethic for us, really, rather than quality on the ball.
04:10
You know, I'll forgive people not having top quality all the time.
04:14
I just can't forgive work rate.
04:16
And tonight, the work rate was pretty good.
04:19
It just come down to some poor decisions and maybe some match fitness.
04:24
And, you know, listen, it's maybe I should have made a couple of changes earlier.
04:27
I don't know. It's one of them.
04:29
You make a change and then something happens and you wish you hadn't.
04:32
And then you don't make a change.
04:34
You think you probably should have done something.
04:35
So, again, I'm accountable as well.
04:38
But I'm looking at a couple of individuals that probably got to sort of just go,
04:42
yeah, I've made a pause up there.
