00:00Reggae superstar Shaggy is in New York City
00:03getting ready for a huge concert next week.
00:06An all-star lineup that he's put together
00:08for a benefit concert for Jamaica.
00:11The event's called Jamaica Strong.
00:12We got him out in New York City
00:15and what he's talking about is the fact
00:17that it's been a month now since Hurricane Melissa
00:20hit Jamaica and absolutely devastated
00:23about two-thirds of the island.
00:25Places that, again, it's been over a month
00:28that still do not have electricity
00:30and they don't really know when that's gonna change.
00:33Everything on the island, every tree, every power line,
00:36that part of the island was destroyed.
00:39So they are starting from zero
00:42trying to rebuild the infrastructure.
00:44So we talked to him about why this concert is so important.
00:47This is what Shaggy had to say about this concert
00:50and what Jamaica needs.
00:51How are things currently in Jamaica?
00:54Not good.
00:55Okay.
00:56Not good. As far as, let's be real,
01:00there are aid that is coming in.
01:01A lot of people are helping.
01:03But people are still in a bad situation.
01:05Right.
01:06You're looking at probably around 60 to 70% of the island
01:10still without electricity and still not running water.
01:13The main thing we're trying to do is raise the awareness.
01:15Part of the healing process is music.
01:18Right.
01:18When I was down there giving out some of the stuff,
01:21even though people lost everything they had, they were dancing, singing, you know, to music.
01:26Yeah. What he just spoke about there is really about the spirit of the Jamaican people.
01:30But there is a lot that still needs to be done.
01:33This concert, if you are going to be in the Tri-State area next Friday, it is going to be a great show.
01:38Obviously, for a good cause. Sean Paul is going to be there as well.
01:42Kimani Marley, Inner Circle, Tessanne Chin, who you may remember from The Voice, won The Voice years ago.
01:48But great concert. And by the way, Shaggy has done so much.
01:52He's a great guy.
01:53I've seen, you know, video of him being on the ground in Jamaica, delivering supplies.
01:59And he's just a great guy. So I personally will do anything to support him.
02:04He, uh, I ran into him a couple of years ago when I was in Jamaica.
02:08Just happened to run into him in Kingston and was so kind and, like, took time to hang out with my family and take photos.
02:15So this is a guy with an incredibly large heart who's trying to do some really great work here.
02:20So that's great.
02:22My name is Nina from Dallas, Texas.
02:24And my family in Jamaica, thankfully, they're doing OK.
02:28But Shaggy's right. There's still so much that needs to be done.
02:32And I'm happy that he is putting a focus on it because things are far from normal.
02:40And I appreciate you guys even putting this on there.
02:42Yeah, it's just not normal.
02:44I was saying this to someone the other day.
02:47I've been in Jamaica where, like, the power goes out for an hour, two hours.
02:51And as a kid, you'd be like, oh, my God, we don't have electricity.
02:53Now it's money.
02:54They've been without electricity for a month and may not have it until next year.
02:58Terrible.
02:59Really terrible.
03:00Get insurance for a little bit.
03:07It's going to be too late.
03:10There's also some money.
03:12It's going to blow up.
