Former EU top diplomat Mogherini held in fraud probe

00:00If confirmed, the allegations against Federica Mogherini could constitute procurement fraud,

00:06corruption, conflict of interest and violation of professional secrecy.

00:11That's according to the European Public Prosecutor's Office, which has taken the EU's former foreign

00:16policy chief and two others into custody.

00:18Indeed, we can confirm that the police was today at the AS buildings and this is part

00:24of the ongoing investigation of the activities that took place in the previous mandate.

00:35Mogherini was Italy's foreign minister and then the EU's foreign policy chief from 2014

00:41to 2019, before taking over five years ago as head of the College of Europe, a prestigious

00:46institution that trains European civil servants.

00:49The Prosecutor's Office suspects Mogherini of favouritism in the awarding of a training

00:54programme for future diplomats, the EU Diplomatic Academy, to the College of Europe in 2021.

01:00In 2022, Mogherini also took the helm of the Academy.

01:05The Belgian Federal Police searched both offices Tuesday and made two additional arrests, a

01:10senior European Commission official, Stefano Sennino, as well as the College of Europe's

01:15deputy head.

01:17The European Public Prosecutor's Office was established in 2021 and is an independent

01:22body of the European Union tasked with fighting offences against the bloc's financial interests.
