00:00Rising above London Bridge at 310 metres, the Shard is one of the most recognisable skyscrapers
00:06in Europe, but its story began long before its 2012 opening.
00:11In the late 1990s, Irvine Cellar envisioned a vertical city that would mix offices, homes,
00:17restaurants and public space.
00:19After securing backing from the state of Qatar, Cellar commissioned world-renowned architect
00:25Renzo Piano, who designed the tower to look like a shard of glass cutting into the sky.
00:32Construction began back in 2009, and at its peak, more than a thousand workers were on
00:37site each day.
00:39The building went up remarkably fast thanks to innovative construction methods, including
00:44building the core while the outer floors rose around it.
00:47When it officially opened in July 2012, the Shard became the tallest building in Western
00:52Europe.
00:55For reasons why wouldn't we be able to become if it was hard, and otherwise made that
00:58happen to me.
00:59It was in their eastern country for many nations.
01:01It must not be forgotten to be where it were
01:17travelled.
