Rising above London Bridge at 310 metres, the Shard is one of the most recognisable skyscrapers

in Europe, but its story began long before its 2012 opening.

In the late 1990s, Irvine Cellar envisioned a vertical city that would mix offices, homes,

restaurants and public space.

After securing backing from the state of Qatar, Cellar commissioned world-renowned architect

Renzo Piano, who designed the tower to look like a shard of glass cutting into the sky.

Construction began back in 2009, and at its peak, more than a thousand workers were on

site each day.

The building went up remarkably fast thanks to innovative construction methods, including

building the core while the outer floors rose around it.

When it officially opened in July 2012, the Shard became the tallest building in Western
