00:00This is Police Interceptors.
00:04Police Interceptors are all I for.
00:06I'm going to tell my kids about this.
00:08And you're riding with the pride of Northamptonshire.
00:11Speed one, two, zero.
00:14Ace Pursuit drivers.
00:16Contact, contact, contact.
00:18With air support.
00:19Got two out, stand by.
00:21I'm out.
00:22And a crack dog unit.
00:24If you leave, you will get hit.
00:26They bring down the bad guys.
00:30I believe you'll want it, mate.
00:32Keep the streets safe.
00:35Put your arms behind your back.
00:37Get on the floor.
00:39And battle 24-7.
00:41Get down on the floor.
00:43In the war on crime.
00:45Crash, crash.
00:47On the floor now.
00:48This is what it is, isn't it?
00:49We find and we lock them up.
00:53Coming up.
00:54Vehicle's going through traffic cones.
00:56Still continuing.
00:57A cone-crushing runaway gets a bone-crushing close encounter.
01:02Get down now.
01:03Get your belly down.
01:05Get down, go back to him now.
01:07Move away from the door.
01:08A special op sees cops unleash the enforcer.
01:12You're out of here, please.
01:14You're out of here, please.
01:15You're out of here.
01:16And a sunny evening in the park.
01:19I'm going to go down and get him.
01:20Turns cloudy for a suspected drug dealer.
01:23Hey, class, it's back.
01:25This is cool.
01:26This is very famous.
01:27This is good, Zach.
01:38Lucky take was in call.
01:40BDA 47 Oakley Road.
01:4221-08.
01:44It's Wednesday evening and interceptor Chris Locke's shift has been a quiet one.
01:51Yeah, no worries.
01:52So far.
01:53We'll finish in Desborough and we'll head to board to Colby.
01:56He's just received an SOS from colleagues 10 miles away.
02:006'5".
02:016'5".
02:02What colour is that Golf?
02:03Like a dark blue.
02:06I mean like two up, two IC1 males about 25 years old.
02:11They were stood with the boot open.
02:14They've gone to actually put the car in the front and it's made off of us.
02:18Oh, okay.
02:19A local unit is hunting down a brand new VW Golf that's been reported stolen from a car rental
02:28firm.
02:29It's been counted as a fail to stop.
02:31Got to find it.
02:32We'll see if we can get it stopped and try and get a couple of bodies from it.
02:37Locky is a taser trained advanced driver who joined the force 19 years ago to help clean
02:44up the county's roads.
02:49His weapon of choice tonight is an unmarked Volvo.
02:52I don't know whether or not Amiga 5 would be worth keeping our eyes peeled.
02:57If it's hit Euro hub south, it could be heading towards Kettering.
03:02A handful of other units are now being drawn into the hunt.
03:06Including several armed response vehicles or ARVs.
03:11Shift, shift, shift.
03:13And that's not all.
03:16The wanted motor has just pinged an ANPR camera nearby.
03:21You can only go towards the A14 from the end of Rockland Road.
03:25Now Locky reckons he knows exactly where the golf will end up.
03:30Roger, I'm Northfield Avenue.
03:33And he's bang on the money.
03:356-5.
03:36Contact, contact.
03:37Heading up towards the town.
03:39Passing Prospect House to my offside.
03:42Locky has slipped quietly in behind.
03:44And for now, travelling incognito appears to be doing the trick.
03:50Unmarked.
03:51Do not believe they're aware of my presence.
03:54Speed 2-5.
03:55Low risk.
03:56Low risk.
03:57For the interceptors, a pursuit is always the last resort.
04:03Left, left, left onto Field Street.
04:08So Locky is happy to hang back, sit tight and wait for backup.
04:13I've not tried to light it up at this moment in time.
04:15Although vehicle is trying to put distance between it to right, right, right.
04:20Vehicle's now making off.
04:23The suspect is clearly spooked, leaving Locky no option but to see what his Volvo can do.
04:28Rocking the road, wait.
04:30Left, left, left.
04:34But this nippy Golf boasts 0-60 in under 9 seconds.
04:38Vehicle's failing to stop.
04:40It's a stolen VW Golf.
04:42Drivers are unknown.
04:43Unknown occupants, believed to be two based on previous items by MPT.
04:48Approaching roundabout, wait.
04:49The roundabout up ahead, coupled with a build-up of traffic, gives Locky a chance to gain some ground.
04:58Continuing Rockingham Road, catering out. Vehicle's still planning to stop.
05:03With an interceptor on its tail, the suspect's moves become increasingly desperate.
05:08Medium risk.
05:10Over the roundabout, continuing Rockingham Road out.
05:14But something up ahead could work in the cops' favour.
05:17We're approaching the roundabout with road closures. Wait.
05:21Will the road work stop him in his tracks?
05:24Vehicle's going through traffic cones, still continuing. High risk.
05:30The Golf smashes through cones like a toddler in an ice cream parlour.
05:35We've gone left, left, left towards the A14.
05:39He's blasting down a quiet stretch of the dual carriageway, which offers ample opportunity to open the taps.
05:45Speed one, two, zero. No pedestrians and sights. Approached in the Junction 7, A14. Speed one, one, zero. Medium risk.
05:58At north of 100, the Golf hurdles through a red and into the roundabout.
06:03Where he almost becomes the filling in a tractor sandwich.
06:07Not one, not one. Not two, not two. Continuing around the A14.
06:11And his daredevil tactics are beginning to have serious consequences.
06:16I believe it's made contact with another vehicle.
06:21Navigating the roundabout at speed, the Golf clips an innocent motorist.
06:26But with an ARB unit now in support, is the tide turning back in Lockie's favour?
06:31We're now heading towards Corby on the A43, through the road closures.
06:40Driving on a closed road may seem like a low risk strategy. Unfortunately, it's anything but.
06:46No vehicles, however, we are going to be approaching workmen as we approach the Rocking Road roundabout at the other end.
06:55Half a mile up ahead, dozens of night shift workers are resurfacing the road.
07:00An interceptor's job now is to calculate the risk.
07:06Confirm you want an abort, abort.
07:08A decision is made to stand down.
07:13But has the Golf gone for good?
07:32Speed one, two, zero. No pedestrians in sight.
07:36In Corby, a VW Golf that had been reported stolen was wreaking havoc on the roads.
07:43I believe it's made contact with another vehicle.
07:46But when it took off down a closed stretch of dual carriageway, interceptor Chris Locke had to weigh up the risks.
07:53We are approaching the part of the road closure where there are going to be workmen.
07:59And the risk to pursue was deemed far too high.
08:02Vehicle's continuing to water catering. I have aborted.
08:11Locke allows colleagues in an armed response vehicle to take over and they proceed with caution.
08:15But once through the road works, they floor it.
08:20Locke's playing catch up, but moments later a flicker of blue catches his eye.
08:24Get down now! Get down now! On the floor with your belly! On your belly now!
08:33Let's build your back! Let's build your back then now!
08:37Armed response cops have caught up with two lads who fled from the Golf.
08:41Put your hands behind your back!
08:45You nearly killed people driving through there mate!
08:48That's two in cuffs!
08:50And it looks like it's way past this lads bed time!
08:53Oh, bro, I'm only 15, you know!
08:57Oh, okay, you should have fired!
08:59After the chaos they brought to the county's roads, the cops will have little sympathy.
09:04I'm in pain and I'm in agony.
09:06That's all right mate, we'll get a doctor to see ya!
09:08I didn't even know what was going on, I was sleeping back in the car next minute!
09:12Bye!
09:13Meanwhile, Locke is checking out the ditched motor.
09:16These two lads should be thankful they're not more seriously hurt.
09:22The manner of the driving from this car today, you've got rum in the car, grinder, all sorts of things.
09:34There's even a pair of sliders, which the young lad may need before he heads off to Kettering Nick.
09:38And with neither of them fessing up to being behind the wheel, both are under arrest for dangerous driving.
09:45Oh, going through road works, going through road closures, forcing its way through cones and other cars.
09:51Just complete disregard for anybody else on the road, let alone passengers in the car.
09:56Just disgusting behaviour, to be perfectly honest.
09:59The main thing is we've got people in custody, we're going to have to try and work out who was driving.
10:02But the car's totaled. It's a brand new car. That's all wrecked. Other cars have been involved as well.
10:10So, all in all, high risk, hopefully high reward at this moment in time.
10:17Following a thorough investigation, police were unable to determine which of the lads was the driver.
10:22So they both received no further action for the driving offences.
10:25They also received no charge in relation to theft of a motor vehicle.
10:28It's Thursday afternoon and interceptors Ian and Connor are getting packed and prepped for an intelligence-led job.
10:46They're part of a programme called Operation Revive, set up to tackle violent crime, drug dealing and child exploitation across the county.
10:58Today, they've got a warrant to conduct a raid on a residential address.
11:03So, the information and the intelligence that we've got so far for this is that it's being used through county lines.
11:12It's being used to cuckoo the resident, so they're taking advantage of the resident to take over his flat.
11:20Cuckooing is a name given to the practice of a crime gang using a vulnerable or young person's home as a base for drug dealing.
11:27If there's reports of it happening within the community, the team have a duty of care to act and safeguard potential victims.
11:38There's recent intelligence about there being machetes and firearms at the address.
11:45However, it doesn't need any specialist officers such as firearms or dogs to attend.
11:49To say Ian's got policing in the blood would be an understatement. Both his mum and dad were on the force.
12:00This boy is blue through and through and proud of it.
12:04Hoping to find from it drugs, cash, burner phones.
12:09The team don't know for certain how many people are inside the flat.
12:13But with reports of potential weapons, they can't take any chances.
12:18So, as we're approaching the address, we'll park out of the way and then we'll walk through.
12:24So, this will hopefully not be seen.
12:30With eight cops on the raid, they hope to have at least strength in numbers.
12:35Someone said they've got the enforcer, haven't they?
12:37And they've got the tools to help with a swift entry.
12:42Door's open.
12:44Yeah.
12:46Even though the front door has been left unlocked, up on the third floor, there's another one.
12:52And because of the intel, the team have got to get through it before anyone inside has a chance to react.
12:57Unfortunately, the lock won't budge.
13:17It's time to unleash the enforcer.
13:20Move away from the door!
13:21Move away from the door!
13:22Move away from the door!
13:24Move away from the door!
13:26Move away from the door!
13:28Move away from the door!
13:30Move away from the door!
13:32Go still!
13:34Stay there!
13:36It's alright, it's alright.
13:38Keep holding.
13:40Sit down and say, mate, it's a warrant.
13:42We'll explain all the men.
13:43You guys want to take a seat for both of you?
13:45Sorry.
13:47Inside the flat, there's one woman, two men and two dogs.
13:52And apart from the barking, there's no sign of any resistance.
13:59But one of the officers who stayed outside has spotted something.
14:03What's that?
14:04They said the bag's been thrown out.
14:07While cops are dispatched to retrieve the bag that was tossed from the window, the rest of the team turn their focus on the flat itself.
14:15Obviously, if there's nothing here, we'll be on our way.
14:18We have to search first, don't we? We've got a warrant to search.
14:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's good.
14:24Stashed in the lounge are a few bags of what appear to be mushrooms.
14:27There's a load of mushrooms that we've found in there, right?
14:30Yeah.
14:32My mate's friend used to throw them, mate.
14:34I put them in my bottle of nice.
14:37Bottle of nice?
14:38Yeah.
14:39Mushroom bottle of nice.
14:40Dying, mate.
14:42The man is claiming to use them in a special recipe.
14:45But judging by the current state of his frying pan, he's no good on Ramsay.
14:50I like mushrooms, some meatballs, some thicker, some beef, and a nice bowl of nice sauce.
15:00Unfortunately for the bloke, the bag that was chucked from the window has just been located.
15:05You know, what was in the bag?
15:06Oh, it just looks like Kansas, isn't it?
15:09It's more class Bs.
15:11A decent find, but not the big score the team were hoping for.
15:16There's no weapons either.
15:18Unfortunately, no sign of anyone present being the victim of cuckooing.
15:24But there is something here that's ringing alarm bells.
15:27Is that your phone really?
15:28I'm not too sure.
15:30There's no one's phone. We can have it, can't we?
15:31Yeah.
15:32Get it booked in and find the owner.
15:33Yep.
15:35The phone and the drugs are being seized.
15:38The landlord is being called to fix the front door.
15:41And the three occupants are released for now, pending further enquiries.
15:45All in all, a mixed bag for the team.
15:48We didn't find what we were looking for, in terms of drugs today.
15:52But as we were going in, a big bag of cannabis was thrown out the window.
15:57We found some mushrooms.
15:59Typically for us, we're always after crack and heroin.
16:02That's what we really look for.
16:04He uses them for making bolognese.
16:11Although the boys and girls from Operation Revive specialise in proactive policing,
16:17they must also be ready to respond to other incidents at a moment's notice.
16:22It's now Friday.
16:32And Ian and Connor are heading back out in the unmarked.
16:39Someone's just all in black on a motorbike doing a wheelie up front.
16:43A call's just come in that's piqued their interest.
16:46Yeah, he's still going to have jubilee.
16:49An off-road motorbike has been spotted driving erratically nearby.
16:54There was a bike pulling away.
16:55It's pulled a wheelie all the way down this road.
16:58It's gone straight over, so the cops are just going over that way to see if they can find him.
17:01There's another unit tracking the bike, and they've just clocked him riding into a park.
17:06So the park that he's coming in is this park here.
17:16Ian and Connor are closing in.
17:19Eyes left, boys.
17:20He's on there. He's on foot.
17:22The suspect has met up with some other lads in the centre of the park.
17:27I'm going to go down and get him.
17:30Buckle up, folks. We're going off-road.
17:32He's running back down towards you.
17:33Fitness fanatic Connor loves the gym, hates drug dealers, and spends his spare time Thai kickboxing.
17:54So this lad doesn't stand a chance.
17:56Wait, what's up, what's up, what's up?
18:01Don't be pretty feverish his drugs act.
18:02Why?
18:03You didn't knock him out.
18:05Ryan, you just seen the road that wheelie.
18:07Yeah, you were over the road.
18:08Get out of the road.
18:09Get out of hand up now.
18:10Guys, how's your stress?
18:12Drug dealers in this area.
18:13Wired man off the road motorbikes.
18:15Dangerously.
18:17For me.
18:18You've met up with a group of people in the park.
18:20I haven't seen police.
18:21I haven't seen police.
18:22You're immediately met up on foot.
18:23Let's get and move to the side if you want.
18:25Yeah.
18:27He's been nicked by Connor and two other cops simultaneously.
18:30And is apparently no stranger to the procedure.
18:33What's his name?
18:35I just got out of the tower yesterday.
18:38They've got the man and the machine.
18:41Yeah, they've got one detained.
18:42Got the bike.
18:44The off-road bikes in Corby are a massive, massive problem.
18:47So if it's one more off the road, it's one more off the road.
18:50No one got hurt.
18:52And, as it turns out, this lad was well worth breaking a sweat for.
18:58As he's run, we've locked him up for dangerous driving and then doing a search on him.
19:04He's got a load of drugs as well.
19:05The lad's been found with what is suspected to be a quantity of cocaine.
19:11So he'll be arrested for the pee-wits.
19:14He'll be arrested for the dangerous driving, as they saw him pulling the wheelies.
19:20And he'll take him to custody.
19:22I think he's just been released from custody, they were saying.
19:24So, straight out, straight back in again.
19:27The bike, once Connor's hauled it back up to the road, is being seized.
19:37And now an ID check on the suspect has confirmed that not only is he disqualified from driving,
19:43but he's also just 16 years old.
19:46You get so many underage dealers now.
19:48You know, a lot of the gangs use them because they know they're under 18
19:51and they're not going to get treated the same way an adult would.
19:54You know, we've had runners as young as 11, 12 deals
19:58because, from a policing point of view, they're hard to deal with
20:03because they're generally vulnerable.
20:04And we have to look at them as a victim and a suspect at the same time.
20:07It's balancing it.
20:08The cocaine seized was estimated to have a street value of nearly 1,500 quid.
20:15The biker boy pleaded guilty to possession of Class A's with intent to supply,
20:20as well as the driving offences.
20:22He was banned for 31 months and had to pay £222 in costs.
20:27At the house raid earlier on, the men admitted possessing Class B drugs,
20:32but the matter was settled out of court with community orders.
20:34No action was taken against the woman.
20:40Still to come...
20:41Can you ask this lady, has she had anything to drink that's alcoholic?
20:46Cops beat the language barrier to nick a drunk driver.
20:49You failed this, so you're driving, so we need to go to custody.
20:54And...
20:55How fast do you think you were going?
20:5779.
20:58Try 115.
21:00A man in a hurry who refuses to learn his lesson.
21:02You're going to call for this.
21:05At that speed, that's the only option we've got.
21:18Take a deep breath, make a seal around the end of the tube,
21:21and then you blow through it until I tell you to stop.
21:22OK, OK.
21:23Go.
21:26Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, stop.
21:28That's it.
21:30The roadside breathalyser first hit our streets more than 50 years ago.
21:34OK.
21:36That's given me a reading of 103.
21:38You're under arrest on suspicion of driving America.
21:40I'll stay with the prescribed alcohol.
21:42I'm getting arrested!
21:44And since that day, annual road deaths have plummeted to just 18% of what they were in the 1960s.
21:50When was your last alcoholic drink?
21:52A couple of months.
21:54I'm a Vodvary, but...
21:55I'm not.
21:56You think you will be?
21:57Yeah.
21:58But with around 40,000 drink drivers getting nicked each year, it's clear that for some motorists, the penny still hasn't dropped.
22:06Good morning.
22:08Can you get out?
22:09No.
22:10Can't get out?
22:11I don't know.
22:12Hello.
22:13Hello.
22:23Lots of shouting, arguing.
22:25Bye.
22:27It's Friday evening, mid-summer.
22:30First roundabout, take the ride.
22:33Refusing to have their spirits dampened by the unseasonal weather are interceptors Stuart Wilson and Rachel McCready.
22:41So not this right, but the next one.
22:46Experienced cop Stuart is known for his friendly manner and unflappable demeanour.
22:51He's apparently got more patients than an NHS waiting list.
22:56He and Rachel have just been called to an incident in a residential street.
23:00This one.
23:03Where an altercation has apparently erupted between two motorists.
23:08Is this the car?
23:11That's the car.
23:17Hello.
23:19Who called us?
23:21You called us.
23:23So I've gone to Link's shop just there, yeah?
23:26I'm parked up. I'm just about to reverse out to go.
23:29And she's come zooming around the corner and went to hit me.
23:32So I've stopped. I've reversed.
23:34And then she's carried on and crashed into my car.
23:38The crash happened outside a convenience store nearby.
23:41And after getting bumped, the driver of the black Ford Focus followed the alleged perpetrator to this street.
23:48She's damaged my car.
23:50Where is it?
23:52She's driving to, nearly hit three cars on the way out. She's driving to a bush.
23:55Even though I stopped.
23:57But, as all cops know, there are two sides to every story.
24:01Unfortunately, Stuart seems to be struggling with the other one.
24:05I'll give you the phone, please.
24:08Okay.
24:10I'm sorry, please. Can you speak with this husband?
24:13With my husband. Can you speak?
24:15Hello.
24:17Hello. Sorry, mate. She doesn't speak any English.
24:19Okay. What language does she speak?
24:21Lithuanian.
24:23Lithuanian. No worries. I can get a translator and I can speak to her with a translator, okay?
24:28I can help you.
24:29No, no. I need an independent party.
24:32Because an allegation's been made against her, okay?
24:37In the UK, police can call upon a database of specially approved and accredited interpreters
24:43to help break down language barriers at the roadside.
24:46Allegedly, I think this lady's been driving, crashed into someone else.
24:51But, yeah, she doesn't speak any English.
24:54So it's one of those where we're just trying to piece together and see what happens.
24:57The first question Stuart wants the interpreters' help with is a pretty simple one.
25:03Can you ask this lady? Has she had anything to drink that's alcoholic?
25:08Tell me if you're good if you're alcoholic.
25:11I'm asking you to ask me to ask me.
25:14Which lady?
25:15No, please, listen.
25:16Please. No, no.
25:17You listen to me.
25:18I listen to you, but I won't understand because I'm shocking.
25:21I'm shocking.
25:22I'm shocking.
25:23Right.
25:24Can you just lay the sound on me?
25:25No, no.
25:26Calm down.
25:28Calm yourself down.
25:29I can't speak.
25:30I can't speak.
25:32The woman is clearly distressed, but she's not answering the question, so Stuart has to persevere.
25:38Can you ask her again?
25:40Has she had anything to drink in the last 20 minutes?
25:43She's saying that she's in a shock.
25:44She's having a headache.
25:45No, it doesn't matter.
25:46I think she's stalling.
25:47So I'm going to require a sample of breath for analysis at the roadside.
26:00I've already stated that to her.
26:02So without further ado.
26:03Deep breath.
26:07So, that's it.
26:10Keep going.
26:11Keep going.
26:12Keep going.
26:13Stop.
26:14Stop.
26:15That's it.
26:16It's done.
26:17Anything over 35 and she's off to the nick.
26:20Okay, so that's come back as a fail.
26:22So the time's 20, 34.
26:24You're under arrest, okay?
26:26For driving whilst over the prescribed limit.
26:28I don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence.
26:31I've got a translator.
26:32I'm trying to listen and take everything on board.
26:35We're trying to communicate with her.
26:36And I think what she's trying to do is stall and stall and stall.
26:40The woman's blown 57.
26:42Well over the legal limit.
26:43And you can't argue with a breathalyzer.
26:46Or can you?
26:48So, Teda, she's under arrest.
26:50So she's going to be coming with us now.
26:51Okay?
26:52It's nice to see you.
26:53Thank you for all your time.
26:56Why?
26:57Because you failed this.
26:59So you're driving.
27:00So we need to go to custody.
27:02We are too bad.
27:03And do an evidential one of these.
27:05So you can't make any phone calls or anything right now?
27:08No.
27:09No.
27:10No, you've just made a phone call.
27:12End it and put it away.
27:13I need to speak.
27:14No, you can't.
27:15Because you're under arrest.
27:16Because you're under arrest.
27:17So no.
27:18The woman will be spending the rest of her Friday evening at the Nick and the other driver, who has blown zero, is free to go.
27:27I mean, our job is essentially to arrest them and get them into custody and then everything can be explained in more detail when we get there.
27:41People do all sorts of weird and wonderful things to try and delay that process.
27:46We do need to have a lot of patience.
27:49Mine was starting to run quite thin.
27:52When they get back to the station, the reality of the past couple of hours appears to catch up with the driver.
27:59But after being examined by a healthcare professional, she's deemed fit enough to give an evidential sample of breath.
28:07I don't believe that this is going to be very easy at all.
28:13But yeah, just be patient and I'm sure we'll get there.
28:19Will Stuart's legendary patience hold out?
28:23I just need her to answer the questions that I'm putting to her.
28:31I want my phone call and I won't talk to anyone.
28:36For 40 minutes, she refuses to answer any of Stuart's questions.
28:41I've asked several times, I've taken it as a refusal for the procedure.
28:49Failing to provide is as bad as a fail.
28:53I can be as patient with anybody.
28:55I will show them respect and dignity and understand the procedures.
28:59But at some point, I'm just going to have to call it.
29:03And that's what we've done.
29:05It is frustrating because she could engage in the process and blow under and then she could walk out and be absolutely fine.
29:17But now she's looking at a charge for failing to provide.
29:19So I'd like to think that she might learn her lesson.
29:22And hopefully she has.
29:26Maybe her punishment will do the trick.
29:28She pleaded guilty to failing to provide and was slapped with a 20 month driving ban.
29:33A community order and fines of almost 200 pounds.
29:37Speed.
29:441-0-0 in the 5-0.
29:47It's by far the biggest killer on our roads.
29:50Yeah, he's lost a wheel now.
29:52It's in a hundred miles an hour on three wheels.
29:54That's just a long case.
29:57And 2.4 million speeding tickets are issued in the UK every year.
30:02You've got a speeding conviction already?
30:05Lose my lane 3 license.
30:08If you're lucky, you'll only lose your license.
30:11Box on lane 3.
30:13If you're not, you could lose something much more precious.
30:17Crash, crash, crash. Vehicle's over time.
30:22The problem with speeding is the faster you go, the less time you have to react.
30:29You're decreasing your chance of being able to react to a situation.
30:34Very recently, we went to an address and had to say that the person had been killed on the roads.
30:43And fundamentally, it was down to speed.
30:47It's devastating for the families.
30:51It affects the officers who have to go and deliver that news.
30:55And it's such a tragic circumstance which needn't happen if people just reduce their speed.
31:11Wednesday, late shift.
31:14And interceptors Aaron Griff Griffiths and Scott Kimberley are cruising the M6 southbound at around 70 miles an hour.
31:21So how fast must that Skoda VRS be going?
31:27Griff's in the unmarked 3 series, so powers up for a closer look.
31:33113.
31:34Yeah.
31:36The Skoda's clocking triple digits.
31:39117.
31:40Yeah, about 110.
31:42110, 115.
31:46Nearly half of all drivers brake the speed limit on the motorway.
31:49But this chap clearly reckons he's king of the road.
31:54Initially, we've sort of clocked it, paced it at 113.
31:59And now it's slowed down to 90 to 100 mark.
32:03Obviously, it's just been caught in traffic.
32:07Back to 100 and increasing.
32:09Advanced driver Griffiths once saved someone's life at a road traffic accident and received a police commendation for his heroics.
32:23114.
32:25This carp has seen up close the damage that speeding can do.
32:28I wonder if this person has just bought it, mate.
32:31Intentionally.
32:32Intentionally.
32:33It's a nice car.
32:3469-page VRS.
32:36Nice car.
32:38The sporty Skoda VRS has a 2-litre turbocharged engine.
32:41But that's no excuse for driving at these speeds.
32:45Looks like I'm on the south.
32:47Yeah.
32:49Rather than deal with him on the hard shoulder, the fellas need to find a safe place to pull him over.
32:55Get me to the Gap.
32:56Easy, won't it?
32:57Yeah.
32:58With the exit for the Watford Gap services just a mile away, Griff makes his move.
33:04Can you give him some lights as well?
33:07Young lad.
33:08You need to prepare follow me for me?
33:10Yeah, I will do.
33:12Some unmarked cars have an LED matrix in the rear window that instructs vehicles behind to follow me.
33:20You got compliance?
33:21Yeah, I got near side.
33:22Lovely.
33:24And he's a name one.
33:27All that's left to do now is slowly reel him in.
33:31Yeah, he's committed.
33:33As hoped, the Skoda's parking up just outside the services.
33:37I'll let you have the honour.
33:41Although for the driver, this is unlikely to be a welcome break.
33:47Hey driver, turn your engine off for me please.
33:50Take your belt off and jump out if you're happy with that.
33:52So I can chat to you.
33:53A bit easier than leaning in then isn't it?
33:56Putting my head in your car.
33:58Why is it that I've stopped you?
33:59I think so.
34:00Just a little bit.
34:02I'm not going to let you.
34:03Just a little bit driving.
34:04Just behind and in front.
34:06Just make me a little bit that I'm comfortable.
34:09To be fair.
34:10Or maybe the insurance, just I bought a car.
34:11I can prove everything.
34:12Just I don't.
34:13All the insurance, everything.
34:14Stop it.
34:15Okay, explain.
34:16Just I bought the car and then.
34:18As far as answers go, that was about as clear as a politician's.
34:22Time for Griff to play Paxman.
34:24Okay, you've just bought the car.
34:25Yes.
34:26But why is it that I've stopped you today, do you think?
34:29Maybe a little bit of speeding.
34:30A little bit of speeding.
34:31A little bit.
34:32How fast do you think you were going?
34:3389.
34:3479.
34:3590.
34:3690.
34:37Try 115.
34:39We've been following you since the M6 Junction 2.
34:41Yeah, I know.
34:42I see that, but just probably when I pass some cars, it's true.
34:45No.
34:46No, you were maintaining that speed.
34:49The chap now claims he was only speeding whilst overtaking.
34:52It's no excuse.
34:54And Griff's decidedly unimpressed.
34:57We've followed you for around about 15 miles almost.
35:01And you have consistently driven over the speed limit.
35:04So it's not just once or twice.
35:07Every opportunity you've got, you've come back out into the outside lane
35:10and you've put your foot down as fast as you can.
35:13Okay?
35:14And then you're going 110, 107, 115.
35:17You're going to court for this.
35:20You're going to court for this.
35:21I want a car, really, please.
35:23At that speed on the motorway, that's the only option we've got.
35:26The bloke's not happy.
35:28And to add a little extra salt to the wound, Griff's just pulled up his driving record.
35:34You've got six points for speeding in 2021.
35:40Speeding in a 50.
35:41How fast were you going then, out of curiosity?
35:44110 or something.
35:45110 or something.
35:46Okay.
35:47So...
35:48It was busted doing more than double the speed limit just two years ago.
35:52So, what would happen if you'd crashed tonight?
35:54It might be that we'd have to go and tell your family that you're not coming home tonight
35:57because you've crashed your car at over 100 miles an hour.
36:02I'm thinking about all the other road users that you share the road with.
36:05To have a licence is a privilege.
36:07With six points already on his licence, that privilege is now hanging by a thread.
36:12Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
36:15A sample of breath comes back clean.
36:17And even though he bought the car this morning, he is fully insured.
36:21That's your licence back.
36:23When you rejoin, please drive the speed limit.
36:27Okay.
36:28You're going to drive through another couple of police force areas.
36:31I can promise you they're probably not the only one that's probably got an unmarked car on the motorway.
36:35But you really need to think about it.
36:37So, with a court summons in the post and a stern word or two from Griff, he's free to go.
36:44And other road users will be hoping that this time, he really has learned his lesson.
36:50He wanted me not to report him for the speeding because,
36:54he said, you know, he's got a job.
36:56He uses his car to drive.
36:57He's got a wife.
36:58He's got kids at home.
37:00But, actually, when I, you know, I put it to him that, what would happen if you crashed at that speed?
37:05And you then, it was then a fatality and, you know, we have to go and tell your family.
37:11For me, it is the right choice that a magistrate in court can decide what penalty he should face.
37:21And he knows that price because he's been there before.
37:24So, he's going to have to go back there and now explain why he's back a second time for the same offence but at high speed this time.
37:33At court, the driver admitted speeding and lost his licence for six months.
37:38He was also ordered to pay a £807 fine and over £400 in costs.
37:44Maybe this time, he's learnt a valuable lesson.
37:49Still to come.
37:50I wasn't going that fast at all.
37:52Then I've gone to overtake him thinking of going straight and then boom.
37:56A demolition derby.
37:57But who's to blame, man or machine?
38:00That mountain bike's probably got better brakes than this.
38:05Thank you, lad.
38:23We're getting reports of a hike into the side of a wall of a vehicle.
38:28It's Sunday afternoon.
38:29Still bad for me injured, come off a motorbike.
38:32The male at once did his name approximately 20.
38:36Scraped and bruised with small amount of blood.
38:38He's dizzy.
38:40Reports are coming in of a motorcycle crash on a housing estate on the edge of town.
38:45Apparently the caller's saying he was speeding and lost the control.
38:49Interceptors Keith Gay and Michael Hollowell are just a couple of miles away.
38:54If you pass that to us, we'll attend.
38:57Former London copper Michael is not only an advanced motorbike rider,
39:02but also a keen speed cyclist.
39:04When it comes to jobs on two wheels, Michael's your man.
39:09Motorbike is the side of my wall.
39:12So he looks badly injured.
39:14And a young lad saying how much will it cost to fix it.
39:17It may be that the lad, it may not have insurance and he's asking how much it is to fix it.
39:22Because we shall find that out in a second.
39:29That'll be it then.
39:31At least just arrived.
39:34When they get there, a local unit is already on the scene.
39:38Let's have a little lookies what's going on.
39:41Well Michael, it's not a pretty sight.
39:42Jesus.
39:43Judging by the state of the wall, it's a miracle the motorcyclist is still standing.
39:52I wasn't going that fast at all.
39:55Were you coming down here?
39:56Yeah, I was just coming down here, right?
39:57The car's gone to pull in here.
39:59Then as I've come down here, somebody's turned left but indicated at the last second.
40:04As they've indicated at the last second, I've gone to overtake them thinking they're going straight.
40:08And then boom.
40:09The lad swears he wasn't speeding.
40:11If that's the case, maybe he hasn't committed an offence today at all.
40:16So, your bike registered to you?
40:19It's been reported already for a couple of days.
40:21It's in my name.
40:22Yeah.
40:23But I haven't got insurance, licence, tax emergency.
40:26Right, okay.
40:27Yeah.
40:28I've not long got the bike to you.
40:29That vehicle's been hit at 8.3.
40:30Okay.
40:31We have three.
40:32We have four.
40:33Sorry, 8.5.
40:34Yeah.
40:35Well, at least he's being honest.
40:37Yeah, so we've got a young lad here who says that he's been riding to the speed of the road.
40:45And that a vehicle's caused him to go through a brick wall and into the side of a van.
40:49He's admitted to have no insurance, tax, or MOT, so the bike's not fit for the road.
40:55To go up a curb and to hit a wall and to go through a van, there's got to be a bit of speed involved.
41:00There's no other vehicle involved, so it's all down to himself.
41:03So, we'll just do some checks.
41:04That's why I check the vehicle to make sure it's a legit vehicle and fit for purpose.
41:10Not only does the bike have no MOT, but it's riddled with rust and almost 30 years old.
41:17You don't see many old bikes like that, do you?
41:18More chrome than plastic.
41:21But very unusual.
41:22Older bikes may hold visual appeal, but even when they're fully roadworthy, riders should be aware of the potential risks.
41:30This is an old drum brake, so it doesn't stop very well.
41:34Bikes nowadays have disc brakes front and back and probably double disc front and back as well.
41:41So, much better stopping power than the old drum brakes from years ago.
41:46That mountain bike's probably got better brakes than this.
41:51A harsh but fair assessment.
41:55And it looks like the bike isn't the only thing that's battle scarred.
41:58Injury-wise for you, are you holding your arm a bit funny?
42:01My shoulders, I don't know.
42:03Can you not lift your shoulder at all?
42:05I think I've got a bit of whiplash, maybe.
42:07No, but you're not moving that. I know you're moving your hand.
42:09I can move my arm, like...
42:10The lad is clearly struggling.
42:12It's all right, go on.
42:13Ah, my old back now.
42:22Is it just a bit stiff?
42:23Yeah, like, it's just muscle, I think.
42:25You sure?
42:26Yeah.
42:28He's putting on a brave face, but he'll need to be checked over by paramedics just in case, so a call is put in for an ambulance.
42:35I am released from here, right?
42:36Once we've got all your details, obviously we're going to have to recover the bike.
42:41The bike, unsurprisingly, is being seized and will only be released once the lad can prove he's fully insured,
42:49and that the bike has been made completely roadworthy.
42:53But let's not hold our breath on that last one.
42:56Are you really going to want that back?
42:57Yeah, I'll fix it.
42:58Are you sure?
42:59Yeah.
43:00He's also promised the homeowner he'll pay for the van and wall repairs out of his own pocket.
43:06We'll make sure his details are correct.
43:08Yeah.
43:09And if you need those details from us, we can give you those.
43:11Yeah, yeah.
43:12All right?
43:13OK.
43:14And with that, it's pretty much job done.
43:16Is this the ambulance for him?
43:18Possibly.
43:19Yeah.
43:20Looks like it.
43:21Look at that.
43:22All the things I hate is people are not insured.
43:24You know, they need to insure their vehicles.
43:26They've got to pay for that cover.
43:28If you can't afford it, don't ride it.
43:30And that bike doesn't look like it's fit for the road.
43:32And it's got no MOT.
43:33So I'm sort of thinking down the lines of it wouldn't pass an MOT.
43:39With medical assistance here and local cops happy to stay and tie up any loose ends, for the interceptors, it's time to hit the road, reflect on a job well done and reminisce about the good old days.
43:51My first bike was called a Fizzy, an FS1E.
43:56It was a 50cc.
43:58God.
43:59My first bike was a Honda C90.
44:01A plastic chicken.
44:02A plastic chicken.
44:03Yeah.
44:04Red and white.
44:05Yes.
44:06We used to muck around on them.
44:07Yeah.
44:08That bike won't be back on the road.
44:10I just do hope that he does pay that chap back his price to get his van repaired.
44:15Because if he doesn't, I think he'll be looking for him.
44:18Yeah.
44:19Yeah.
44:20I think so.
44:21The bike was never collected and was scrapped.
44:24For driving without a license or insurance and without a valid MOT, the lad had to pay over £1,600 and receive six points.
44:51The driver's white.
44:52The man?
44:53And he just left!
44:54And he was that!
44:55All right.
44:56And he's going to come.
44:57They've got this!
44:58Hey watch this!
44:59Yeah!
45:00He's going to attack you!
45:01He's going to attack me!
45:02He's going to attack you!
45:03He's going to attack me!
