01:19Until I was about 25, I lived in a beach town.
01:29My specific neighborhood was about a 20-minute walk from the beach.
01:33I'd say about 80% of my personality was beach-related.
01:36I've been surfing longer than I've been able to speak,
01:39and it would be an anomaly for me to shake out a pair of shoes
01:42and not have some amount of sand fall out.
01:44My two best friends, let's call them Armand and Chuck,
01:48were extroverted, outgoing, and charismatic.
01:51We were all 18 and very much obsessed with girls.
01:54It was a Saturday night in late May,
01:56just a few weeks before school let out.
01:59Senioritis had long since set in,
02:01and at this point, my friends and I regularly pushed the limits
02:04of how much we could get away with without getting in trouble.
02:07We already had our COVID-ed college acceptances,
02:09so we didn't really care much about high school anymore.
02:12Armand and I had plans to meet up with two girls from our high school
02:15that we'd been getting along with really well at school.
02:18The plan was to pick the two of them up in the evening
02:21and enjoy a cool, breezy night on the beach.
02:23We had blankets and a few bottles of wine,
02:26the perfect combinations for stargazing on the beach.
02:29I don't condone drinking and driving to any capacity,
02:32but I was just a stupid kid.
02:34I arrived at Sophia's house just after 9.
02:37Her and Fran sort of walk-danced to the car.
02:40It was clear that they had a little something to drink beforehand.
02:43Armand and I exchanged some excited grins.
02:46It was going to be a fun night.
02:48I took a scenic route to a scenic beach.
02:50It was about a 30-minute drive.
02:52The whole time, the four of us were having a great time in the car,
02:55cracking jokes and talking about some mutual friends.
02:58At one point, Fran and I were having a very deep philosophical conversation
03:02about the nature of time and death and such.
03:05We were all very much enjoying each other's company.
03:07The specific beach I had chosen had a dirt path that you could drive a car up.
03:12From there, there was a more narrow sand path that we would walk.
03:16The path was actually pretty steep,
03:18but I had picked it because we were less likely to encounter any other people at such a secluded spot.
03:23Furthermore, this beach was further away from the main boardwalk,
03:26so the sky would be clearer for stargazing.
03:29I thought of everything.
03:30I parked my car as far up the dirt road as possible, and the four of us hopped out.
03:35Armand and I carried the blankets and wine.
03:38I'll fast forward through the boring stuff.
03:40After a few hours and an empty bottle, Armand and I found ourselves separating.
03:45He and Fran walked up the beach, and Sophia and I walked in the opposite direction.
03:49After being separated by a decent amount of distance and darkness,
03:52I threw my blanket down, and we drunkenly fell asleep on top of it.
03:56Before anything happened, Sophia tensed up.
03:59At first, I thought it was something that I had done, but then she whispered something.
04:04Do you hear that?
04:05I focused my attention and strained my ears,
04:08trying to hear something other than the gentle crashing of ocean waves.
04:12I assumed she was just drunk, but then, to my surprise, I did hear something.
04:17It sounded almost like a whirring, like the sound a small engine would make.
04:22The sound seemed to be moving around.
04:24I couldn't pin down where it was even coming from.
04:26Then, it seemed to fade away into nothingness.
04:30It's nothing, I assured her, eager to resume what we had been doing.
04:34And that's what we did.
04:35Soon after, I fished my shirt from the sand and shook it out before throwing it over my head.
04:41Just then, Sophia, who was still lying on the blanket, shrieked.
04:44I whipped around to look at her, and saw she was pointing up at something.
04:49I looked up, but couldn't see anything besides the blackness of the sky.
04:53I sat down next to her to get a better angle, and I was horrified.
04:58From her point of view, the moon was perfectly aligned with what appeared to be a drone floating directly overhead.
05:04It hovered a little while longer before zipping up into the dark sky and disappearing out of sight.
05:09It all made sense.
05:11That noise that we had heard before was 100% the drone.
05:14I got angry at myself for not realizing at the time.
05:17I then got sick at the thought of being watched that entire time.
05:21I glanced over at Sophia, and could tell she had the same exact feeling.
05:25She put her head in her hands and started crying.
05:28I consoled her as best I could before suggesting we walk back to the car.
05:33The two of us made it to the car to find Armand and Fran already there.
05:36I quickly explained the situation.
05:39The two of them were dumbfounded, and I could feel the joy in the air literally being sucked out.
05:44I began driving in silence in the direction of Sophia's house, eventually trying to lighten the mood with some conversation.
05:51It didn't work, though.
05:52The girls agreed that they didn't feel safe going home just yet.
05:56It was a Saturday night, so I didn't mind staying out late.
06:00I asked if we could hang out at either of their houses.
06:03They both shook their heads, saying their parents wouldn't allow it.
06:06My house was off the table for the same reason, as was Armand's.
06:11I decided to ask Armand to call up Chuck, which he did.
06:15Chuck's house was massive, and his parents were super chill.
06:18It was honestly the perfect spot.
06:20To our delight, Chuck was free.
06:22I pulled into Chuck's driveway and parked the car.
06:25Armand and the two girls began making their way towards Chuck's front door,
06:28and I told them I'd catch up to them in a second.
06:31I needed a second to think about everything that had just happened.
06:34I was more shaken up than I was letting on,
06:37so I leaned my forehead against the steering wheel and closed my eyes in an attempt to calm down a bit.
06:42Honestly, those few seconds with my eyes closed really helped.
06:46Instinctively, I pulled out my phone, which I hadn't even touched since the incident.
06:51The screen lit up, and I stared at the single notification that sat on the display.
06:56I had to blink a few times to make sure I wasn't imagining it.
06:59My entire body froze as I stared in horror at the lone notification,
07:03AirTag found moving with you.
07:06Every emotion that I had just expelled from my body came crashing back.
07:10We were literally being tracked.
07:12I snapped out of my paralysis and jumped out of the car,
07:16examining every inch of the vehicle.
07:18Nothing on the front bumper, nothing in the grill, and nothing on the back.
07:22I started getting desperate, checking the seats and flipping floor mats.
07:26Still nothing.
07:27By now, sweat was pouring down my neck, and I could feel the hairs on my arms and legs clamping up.
07:33I got on my hands and knees and began examining the underside of my car.
07:38I got to the tire on the driver's side and began feeling around the tire well.
07:42And there it was.
07:44It was literally taped to the underside of the well.
07:47Impossible to find if you didn't know what you were looking for.
07:49I held the tag in my hand for a few seconds before throwing it to the ground and smashing it to pieces.
07:55Whoever had watched us on the beach with that drone knew where we were.
07:59I didn't feel safe in Chuck's driveway all alone.
08:02I picked up one of the broken AirTag pieces and ran over to Chuck's front door.
08:06I told everyone what I had discovered, showing them the AirTag pieces to prove it.
08:10They were even more horrified than I was, especially the girls.
08:13They checked their phones and saw the same notification.
08:18Chuck was particularly pissed off because we had been potentially tracked back to his house.
08:23After the panic subsided, we spent the rest of the night in Chuck's basement and ended up sleeping over.
08:28A couple weeks passed and nothing happened.
08:31Honestly, my friends and I were glad to forget about the whole thing.
08:34Assuming it was entirely in the past now.
08:36The only way we could rationalize it was that some creep wanted to watch some young adults hook up on the beach
08:42and track their car to scare them.
08:44It was chilling to think about, but we were relieved that the situation hadn't escalated.
08:50One Sunday morning, about three weeks after the incident, I got a call from Chuck.
08:54He screamed through the phone for me to drive to his house as soon as possible, which I did.
09:00When I got there, he was standing in his driveway with a concerned look on his face and some paper in his hand.
09:06I was confused until I realized what he was holding.
09:09They weren't papers, but rather pictures.
09:12I examined them more closely.
09:14Pictures of me from that night on the beach.
09:17They were grainy and dimly lit, but you could clearly see Sophia and I in revealing fashion.
09:23I was disgusted.
09:24I could only imagine how Sophia would feel upon finding out.
09:28Not knowing what to do, we called the police and explained the situation.
09:32They told us that there was essentially nothing they could do,
09:35but we insisted that they at least scan the photos for prints.
09:38They eventually got back to us saying the photos turned up nothing.
09:40Sophia was terrified that whoever sent them would try and blackmail her, and I feared the same.
09:47The experience was downright traumatizing.
09:49Luckily, nothing ever happened after that, probably because we had gotten the police involved.
09:54Sophia was never quite the same around me after what happens, and I can't blame her.
09:58I can only hope those pictures don't turn up later in my life.
10:11My best friend Ricardo and I were 19.
10:13At the risk of sounding pretentious, the two of us come from well-off North Jersey families
10:18and get to enjoy our summers down the Jersey shore.
10:21My house is in Belmar, New Jersey, and his is in Lavalette.
10:24It was a random summer night during the week, and Ricardo was driving the two of us from
10:29my house in Belmar down to Lavalette, about an hour drive.
10:33To be completely honest, I preferred hanging out in Ricardo's house, not only because it
10:37was a little nicer, but because the general vibe of Lavalette is more geared towards kids
10:41our age.
10:43If we weren't scouring the area for a party, we could enjoy some drinks on one of the
10:47many private beaches we technically weren't supposed to be on.
10:50I could go on and on about things to do down the shore, but for the sake of brevity, I'll
10:55try my best to get to the point.
10:57As we were driving down, we agreed that we'd opt for a quieter night.
11:01No partying, links, or anything that we might normally do.
11:05The two of us agreed to snag a few beers, roll a joint, and chill on one of the private
11:09beaches under the stars.
11:11Honestly, it sounded great.
11:13The two of us had been going pretty hard with some of our other friends.
11:16A break from partying was much needed.
11:18To anyone unfamiliar with the layout of Lavalette, there's a beachside and a bayside.
11:24Most of the beaches feature a really high dune and a steep drop-off as you approach the
11:29ocean.
11:30If you were to stand at the ocean edge and look back, you'd see a pretty sizable hill
11:34of sand.
11:35After drinking a few drinks at Ricardo's place, we snagged some bikes from his garage and
11:40made our way toward the beach of our choice.
11:42For whatever reason, Ricardo insisted on journeying further than I'd ever been, which I didn't
11:47quite understand since all the beaches were basically the same.
11:50I really didn't mind a longer bike ride though, so I just went with it.
11:54Eventually, Ricardo decided on a desolate-looking beach at the end of the road with no cars parked
11:59on it.
12:00Every house on the street had its lights off.
12:02I actually preferred this.
12:04This was back when weed was illegal in New Jersey, and we weren't too keen on getting
12:08caught.
12:08Plus, we did have some drinks with us despite the fact that we were only 19.
12:13We hid our bikes under some shrubs, then we made our way toward the beach.
12:17The two of us lit our jet and smoked under the stars, the only sound being the light waves
12:22of the ocean and the accompanying wind.
12:24The beach stretched on endlessly in both directions, and the sand felt cool underneath our feet.
12:30The two of us got progressively drunker while we filled the air with laughter and conversation.
12:34Eventually, we just laid back in the sand, watching a sky full of stars in hopes of witnessing
12:39a shooting star.
12:41That's when we heard it.
12:42I heard it first.
12:44It was almost undetectable.
12:46The sound was like a metallic buzzing, sort of like the sound you'd hear in a massive
12:50gymnasium with large overhead lights.
12:53I really can't describe the sound any better.
12:55It was a faint, metallic buzz that couldn't possibly be anything caused by the beach.
12:59I sat up and stared at Ricardo, and I could tell the moment he started to hear it too.
13:05The two of us whipped our heads in every direction, looking into the darkness for the source of
13:09the drone.
13:10Strangely, it was difficult to pin down exactly where the sound was coming from.
13:14It was just too faint to tell.
13:17We were beginning to get freaked out, but were too terrified to move.
13:20We assumed that whatever was making that noise would go away, and we wouldn't have to
13:24worry about it.
13:25There was literally no way we could be seen from our spot on that beach.
13:28It was way too dark, and the sound of the ocean definitely drowned out any sounds we
13:32had been making.
13:34I know it doesn't exactly sound scary, but I'd be lying if I said my heart wasn't
13:38pounding out of my chest.
13:39The drone continued on, and after another few minutes, Ricardo gestured for me to follow
13:44him.
13:45I nodded my head in agreement.
13:47Leaving was definitely the best option.
13:50Just like a scene from a movie, the exact second the two of us stood up, the droning went
13:54from a 1 to a 5.
13:55It took every ounce of self-control I had to resist the urge to yell in fear.
14:00It wasn't a gradual shift.
14:02The sound literally increased in a split second, and it was definitely coming from our right.
14:07I felt the hairs on my neck stand up, and a wave of fear washed over me, tensing my body
14:11from head to toe.
14:13We stared into the darkness, and still didn't see anything.
14:16But now, the drone sounded so close to us, that we instinctively started running toward
14:21the sand dune.
14:23I didn't even know what we were running from.
14:25All I knew was that something was seriously wrong, and there was someone or something after
14:29us.
14:30As we were about halfway to the dune, I felt Ricardo place a firm hand on my shoulder,
14:34abruptly stopping me from continuing to run.
14:36At first, I was confused, but then I saw what his gaze was fixated on.
14:42I glanced up toward the dune and saw it.
14:44There was a dark figure standing motionlessly at the peak of the dune.
14:48Its arms were freakishly long, almost reaching its knees.
14:52It was ridiculously tall, and I was shocked at how it managed to stand so still.
14:57It was truly terrifying.
14:59Ricardo shouted at me, breaking my gaze from the figure, and we continued running, this
15:03time parallel to the beach.
15:05We ran to the next dune entrance and sprinted up the slope.
15:09As we made our way to the peak, we looked back at where we had just came from.
15:13I can still remember the terrifying sight that followed.
15:16Not only was the dark figure still on the dune, but there were maybe three or four more standing
15:21motionless on the slope.
15:23Each one looked like they were facing us.
15:25We didn't have time to go back for our bikes.
15:27Instead, opting to run the entire way home.
15:30The next morning, we retraced our steps, but couldn't for the lives of us find those bikes.
15:35Maybe they had been stolen, or maybe whoever or whatever was stalking us the night before
15:41had something to do with it.
15:43Either way, I've never experienced anything scarier on a beach, and still have trouble
15:47explaining most of these events.
15:49The weirdest thing for me is I was never able to determine what the buzzing drone was,
15:53and to this day, have not heard anything even remotely close to it.
15:57Beaches have always terrified me.
16:09Well, not always.
16:10My fear is a direct result of what I'm about to tell you.
16:12As a kid, I used to love the shore.
16:16I remember spending many summers in eager anticipation of the weekend when my family and I would hang
16:20out at our beach house.
16:22Or, if I was lucky, they'd let me spend it at my friend Charles' beach house, which was
16:26even more fun.
16:28I was 16, and this was one of those special summer weekends.
16:31Me, Charles, and our third friend Riley were going to spend a few unsupervised days at Charles'
16:37beach house in LBI.
16:39Riley was a year older than Charles and I, and had recently gotten his license, so we'd
16:44be driving down in his car.
16:46The drive down was fantastic.
16:48Riley was a pretty uncoordinated driver at the time, so most of the ride was spent laughing
16:52at him swerving and cursing the road.
16:55It was great.
16:55We got down to LBI in good time and immediately moved all of our stuff from the car to the
17:00rooms we'd be staying in.
17:02The layout of the house is important to the story, so I'll briefly mention it.
17:06There's a front door, a garage door which connects the back to the front yard, a back
17:11sliding door, and a back upstairs deck that connects the upstairs bedrooms.
17:15There's also a spiral staircase that allows you to go directly from the back deck to the
17:19ground, so you can enter and exit the house from upstairs.
17:22The house sits along a lagoon, meaning the back end of the house faces a narrow channel
17:27of water, with houses on the opposite side.
17:30We were at that ripe age where chasing girls was a priority, and a nice beach house all
17:35to ourselves was the perfect occasion.
17:37We spent a few hours figuring out which girls were down the shore at the time and talked
17:41to them on Snapchat.
17:42Finally, we found a group of three cute girls that said they'd be down to come kick back
17:46at Charles' house.
17:47I had more than enough weed to last us the weekend, and we had snagged a few bottles of our
17:51parents' alcohol before leaving.
17:53It was perfect.
17:55Things were going very well.
17:57The three girls, Rosie, Alexa, and Sophie, were fun and flirty, and the three of us could
18:02tell where the night would probably end up.
18:04At one point, the six of us decided to smoke in Charles' backyard pool.
18:08It was small, but it was perfect for six drunk kids.
18:11I remember the sight vividly.
18:13The gentle bay breeze blowing through my hair, the steam from the heated water rising slowly
18:18with the puffs of smoke from the joint.
18:20At our age, this was bliss.
18:22But then suddenly, Charles turned the music all the way down and stared over my shoulder
18:26into the darkness of the lagoon.
18:29Confused, I turned around, peering into the darkness.
18:32I could roughly make out the houses on the other side of the lagoon, but I wasn't quite
18:36sure what Charles was looking at.
18:38One of the girls asked Charles why he turned the music down, and he whispered that he saw
18:42someone standing on the dock opposite the house.
18:44I figured he was messing with us, so I started laughing.
18:48Who cares, bro?
18:49People literally live here, I said.
18:52Charles shook his head.
18:53I know that family personally.
18:55My parents said they're in Florida for the week.
18:57In all honesty, I still thought it wasn't a big deal or he was just messing around, so
19:01I kept chuckling.
19:02The girls were a little freaked out, though, and said they wanted to go back inside.
19:06I wasn't going to argue, so the six of us started making our way out of the pool.
19:10As we were drying off in the yard, Riley jumped and cursed, looking towards the lagoon.
19:16The rest of us turned, and even though the light was dim, I could definitely see what
19:20looked like movement coming from the opposite dock.
19:23The six of us froze in place, trying to get a better glimpse of what we were looking at.
19:27Just then, a passing car on the road across from us lit up the scene ever so slightly,
19:32and the sight was horrifying.
19:34There were four tall silhouettes standing at the edge of the dock, facing us.
19:38It was impossible to tell what they were wearing or what they looked like, but there was no
19:42doubt they were facing our direction.
19:45Go inside now, said Charles with a shaky voice, motioning us toward the sliding door.
19:51As we rushed inside, I heard a distinct sound that remains the most terrifying noise I'd
19:55ever heard.
19:56Four consecutive splashes rang out from behind us.
20:00Those guys were swimming across the lagoon.
20:03We were in full-on panic mode at that point.
20:05The girls screamed while Riley slammed the sliding door shut and locked it.
20:10Charles quickly ran to the front to lock that door too, and the six of us ran to the room
20:14that wasn't visible from the outside.
20:16We waited in silence, horrified at what we might hear next.
20:20A few minutes passed.
20:22Still nothing.
20:23Out of nowhere, Riley cursed, revealing to us that he had forgotten to lock the sliding
20:27door on the deck.
20:29Charles started to panic, knowing that this house was about to be broken into.
20:32Just then, we heard soft, quieted footsteps above us, and that was the last straw.
20:39None of us had any weapons on hand, and we were all intoxicated, so running was really
20:43our only option.
20:45The six of us sprinted for the front door and bolted to the car, which Riley started up
20:49in a flash.
20:50The chaos of it all was too much for Riley to handle, and he destroyed Charles' mailbox
20:54on the way out of the driveway.
20:56Once we were far enough away, we called the police.
20:59The ordeal was a nightmare.
21:01We went back to the house once police had searched it, but the news was shattering.
21:06All of the valuables on the top floor were missing, but that wasn't the worst part.
21:10Charles' family owned a medium-sized Boston whaler boat, which was also stolen, most likely
21:15as the getaway vehicle.
21:16Charles' father tended to keep a spare set of keys inside a small hatch below the steering
21:21wheel, which the police concluded was how the culprits got away so quickly.
21:25How they knew where the key was hidden is something I still wonder.
21:28The police were never able to arrest the perpetrators, and likely never will.
21:33Charles, Riley, and I think whoever robbed the house might have been someone who knew Charles'
21:37family, and they knew where the key was, and the house was supposed to be vacant that
21:41weekend as well.
21:41It's been a long time since this chilling event took place, but I haven't let one day
21:47pass without locking every door and window in my home.
21:50Do yourself a favor and lock your doors at night.
21:53Am I going to see you?
