00:00I used to live in a small studio apartment in Chicago when I finished college.
00:16It was not fancy, just a single room space on the top floor of a three-story building.
00:21I chose it because rent was cheap and it was close to work, and as a 23-year-old with student
00:26loans and no savings, I didn't have the luxury of being picky.
00:31The apartment was clean, functional, and most importantly, mine.
00:35The only window in the place looked out over a narrow alley.
00:39Across the way was another apartment building, nearly identical to mine.
00:43The alley was tight, barely wide enough for a single car to squeeze through, and during
00:47the day it barely got any sunlight.
00:50At night it was pitch black.
00:52That never really bothered me much.
00:54I was working late nights at the time, bartending at a lounge on the north side.
00:59I usually got home around 2.30 or 3 in the morning, then I'd make a quick meal and zone
01:03out on my phone until I passed out.
01:06One night, about a month into living there, I noticed something odd.
01:10I had just walked in, kicked off my shoes, and turned on the overhead light when I thought
01:15I saw something move in the window across the alley.
01:18Just a flicker.
01:19A curtain twitching, maybe.
01:22I froze for a second.
01:24But when I looked again, there was nothing.
01:26The window was dark and still.
01:29I shrugged it off.
01:30Maybe I startled someone, or maybe it was just a draft.
01:34The next night, it happened again.
01:37As soon as I turned on the lights, I saw the curtain shift in that same window.
01:41This time, I was sure I saw it.
01:44A hand pulling the curtain back just slightly before letting it fall.
01:48I couldn't see the person behind it.
01:50The lights in the other apartment were off.
01:53It was just a sliver of movement in an otherwise black void.
01:56But the reason this really caught my attention was because I had never seen the lights on in
02:00that apartment.
02:01I always assumed that nobody had lived there.
02:04That night, I didn't sleep well.
02:06I kept thinking about that attic and the hand.
02:09Over the next week, I started paying closer attention.
02:13Every night without fail, the curtain would move within seconds of me turning on my lights.
02:18It was subtle, but unmistakable.
02:20It was the same thing every time.
02:22There was a slow parting in the curtain.
02:24I had a glimpse of the dark space beyond it, and then the curtain would close again.
02:28I began testing it.
02:31Some nights, I would leave my lights off and sit silently by the window.
02:34When I did, nothing happened.
02:36But the moment I turned them on, even just the dim light by my couch, the curtain across
02:41the alley would shift.
02:44Someone was watching me.
02:45It was obvious.
02:46I tried to rationalize it, like maybe someone just liked looking out their window at night.
02:51But that didn't explain the timing.
02:53It didn't explain the way it always coincided with my arrival.
02:56That was too big of a coincidence.
02:59I asked my landlord about the unit across the alley, and he told me it was vacant and
03:03had been for months.
03:05I pressed him, asked if maybe someone had moved in recently, but he shook his head.
03:10He even joked that I was being paranoid.
03:13I considered calling the police, but ultimately didn't, because I felt like reporting someone
03:17possibly looking at me through a window in an empty apartment sounded ridiculous.
03:21There was no crime or proof, just a feeling that grew worse every night.
03:27Then one night, everything escalated when I came home later than usual, around 4 am.
03:32The bar had hosted a private event and clean up ran long, so I was exhausted and not thinking
03:37clearly.
03:38When I reached my door, I noticed something stuck in the frame.
03:43At first, I thought it was junk mail or a flyer, but when I pulled it free, I realized
03:48it was a crumpled note.
03:50It simply said, Hey, written in pen.
03:53My legs went weak because the first thought I had was the apartment across the alley, so
03:58I ran to the window and looked across.
04:01The curtain was drawn and there was no movement.
04:03I called my friend Jamie, panicking.
04:06She lived across town, but told me to come over right away.
04:09I grabbed a backpack, stuffed some essentials into it, and got out.
04:15The next day, I confronted the landlord again.
04:18This time, I demanded to see the apartment across the alley.
04:21He hesitated, but eventually agreed to meet there with the key.
04:25The place was dusty and completely empty with not a single piece of furniture.
04:30The walls were bare and the floor creaked with every step as if the place were a hundred
04:33years old.
04:35But there, in the back room facing my window, was a single metal folding chair.
04:41It was positioned directly in front of the window, and they had access to an apartment
04:46that was supposed to be locked and empty.
04:49The police were called and they searched the place.
04:51I'm pretty sure they took fingerprints, but nothing came of it.
04:54The fact that my paranoia was correct the entire time, and that I was in fact being watched,
05:00it made me sick, wondering how long the stretches of time that that sicko would watch me would
05:04be.
05:05I moved out that week.
05:07To this day, I have no idea who was watching me, how they got in, or how long it would have
05:11gone on if I hadn't found that note saying, hey.
05:15I've considered the possibility of it being the landlord, but ultimately I had to drop that
05:19theory, because there's no way in hell he wouldn't have went over there to remove that chair before
05:23bringing me over there.
05:25I still dream about that window, and sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, certain
05:30that someone, somewhere, is still watching me.
05:35When I was 12, my family moved to a rural area in Oregon, miles from the nearest town.
05:49We lived on a large piece of land surrounded by dense pine forest.
05:53It was peaceful, quiet, and completely isolating.
05:57The house itself was built in the 1940s.
06:00It had the old house starter pack with things like creaky floors, a creepy attic, and a detached
06:05rundown shed that sat about 30 feet from the back door.
06:09The shed was packed with old tools and junk from the previous owner.
06:13My dad always meant to clean it out, but he never did.
06:16For the most part, we stayed away from it.
06:18I remember the first time I noticed something strange.
06:21It was a weeknight, close to midnight.
06:24I was up reading with a flashlight under the covers when I heard our dog, Max, barking uncontrollably.
06:30Max was a golden retriever, super friendly but alert.
06:33When he barked like that, it meant something was wrong.
06:37I crept out of bed and peeked out the window.
06:39He was facing the shed, barking into the darkness.
06:43The motion sensor light by the back door was on, casting long shadows across the lawn.
06:47I couldn't see anyone, but Max wouldn't stop.
06:51I didn't go out there, I just watched for a bit until he calmed down, then I walked away.
06:56The next morning, we found deep boot prints in the dirt between the house and the shed.
07:00My dad dismissed it, saying it was probably a neighbor or a drifter passing through, but
07:05I couldn't stop thinking about it.
07:08Over the next few weeks, Max barked at that shed multiple times.
07:12Every time, we'd look outside and find nothing, but the footprints would be back and they always
07:17led to the shed, never away from it.
07:20One night, around 2am, I woke up to the sound of footsteps on the gravel outside my window.
07:26I froze.
07:27The footsteps stopped, then resumed, moving toward the shed.
07:31I peeked through the blinds, and the light by the back door flicked on, and for just a
07:35second, I saw him, a tall man standing beside the shed door.
07:40He was wearing what looked like a dirty gray coat.
07:43His face was obscured by shadows, and then the light went out.
07:48My heart pounded in my chest as I backed away from the window.
07:50I woke my parents.
07:52My dad grabbed his rifle and went outside, but the man was gone.
07:56The footprints were fresh though, right up to the shed.
08:00This time, my dad decided to check inside.
08:02He unlocked the padlock and pulled the doors open, but all there was were just rusty tools
08:08and old tarps.
08:09He added a new lock and reinforced the doors.
08:12For a while, things were quiet.
08:15Then, a month later, Max went missing.
08:18We searched everywhere, through the woods, up and down the road, even asked neighbors.
08:23He was gone.
08:24I was completely heartbroken.
08:27I held out hope that he'd return and he just got lost in the woods.
08:31That night, I couldn't sleep at all.
08:34I kept thinking about the shed and Max.
08:37About the man I'd seen.
08:40Around 3am, I heard the back door creak.
08:43I got out of bed and tiptoed into the hallway.
08:46My dad was already up, holding his rifle.
08:49We moved to the back door, just in time to see the motion light flicker on.
08:53There, standing by the shed, was the man again.
08:57Only this time, he was holding something.
09:00In one hand, a knife.
09:01In the other, Max's collar.
09:03When I saw this, I felt like my life was half sucked out of my body.
09:08Like this horrible weightlessness in which I almost felt like I was going to fall down.
09:13My dad shouted and raised the rifle, but the man turned and ran into the woods.
09:19We called the police, and they searched the area, but found no trace of him.
09:23What they did find inside the shed made me sick.
09:27The floor had been cleared.
09:28In the dirt, someone had carved symbols, crude, disturbing images.
09:34In the corner was a pile of bones.
09:36Animal bones, hopefully.
09:37It got worse.
09:40Behind a false panel in the shed wall, the officers found a backpack filled with items that weren't
09:45ours.
09:46Wallets, watches, and a few pieces of worn clothing.
09:50Things that must have belonged to someone.
09:52Multiple someones.
09:54The strangest thing was a notebook.
09:57Pages and pages of strange symbols, incoherent rambling and jagged handwriting, and crude drawings
10:03of houses, families, and eyes.
10:06I believe that this was some kind of message to us, saying he was watching us like he's
10:11watched other families.
10:14The police took all the items that were found.
10:17That night, while packing the leave, I looked out my window one last time to the shed.
10:23The police tape fluttered in the breeze, and all was quiet, but just beyond it, maybe ten
10:28feet into the tree line, I saw a person's face, but the moment I blinked, it was gone.
10:35I screamed my dad's name in a desperate panic, yelling he's back.
10:39My dad stormed into the room and looked out the window, asking where he was.
10:44I pointed straight at the shed, and saw he was to the left, right by the woods.
10:49He ran to grab his rifle again, and this time he ran outside and screamed like a maniac
10:53while firing a round.
10:56You can't imagine the anger and frustration of having to be chased out of your own home
10:59by a crazy, dangerous person who likely killed your dog.
11:03My dad was letting his frustration out in that moment.
11:06I know my dad wanted to kill that man.
11:09We moved out days later to a much less remote part of Oregon.
11:22In the summer of 2018, my friends and I, Abby, Marcus, his younger brother Tim, Tim's girlfriend
11:29Hannah, and me, planned a weekend trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
11:33We were all in our early twenties fresh out of college, and eager to unplug from everything.
11:38We picked a spot far off the grid deep into the national park, where the trees grew thick,
11:43the air smelled of pine and damp soil, and there was no cell signal for miles.
11:48The first night was normal.
11:49We hiked in with our gear, found a clearing by a lake with just enough space for three
11:54tents, started a fire, and cooked hot dogs and marshmallows.
11:58We told stories, drank, and stayed up late watching the stars.
12:02The silence of the forest was relaxing.
12:05It wasn't until the second night that things started to feel wrong.
12:09At around 11pm, we were still sitting around the fire laughing, when Marcus suddenly stiffened
12:15and pointed towards the woods, asking if we saw that as well.
12:19We all looked, but nothing was there.
12:22He swore he saw movement, a figure ducking behind a tree maybe 30 or 40 yards away.
12:28Tim dismissed it as a deer.
12:30Then, 20 minutes later, we heard a stick snap in the same direction.
12:35This time it was loud.
12:37Abby was clearly spooked and said she wanted to go to bed.
12:41Everyone agreed to call it a night.
12:43We doused the fire, zipped up the tents, and tried to sleep.
12:47That night, I woke up to something that still haunts me, breathing from just outside probably
12:53not even 10 feet from my head.
12:55At first I thought I was still in a half dream state, but it continued.
12:59I was with 4 other people though.
13:02It could have maybe been one of them going outside to pee, but I didn't hear the sound
13:06of a stream.
13:07Just the breathing.
13:08The breathing also almost sounded like an older person, someone who was short of breath
13:12from smoking too much.
13:14I reached for my flashlight, but didn't dare turn it on.
13:18The breathing moved from one side of the tent to the other, then it stopped.
13:23I waited without saying a word, because it was the only thing I could do.
13:27Since the breathing stopped rather suddenly, I felt a sense of relief that my original thought
13:32of it being one of my friends peeing was accurate.
13:35So eventually, I fell asleep.
13:36In the morning, I said nothing, neither did Abby.
13:40But when we met up for breakfast, Marcus had a concerned look on his face like he was antsy
13:45to tell us something.
13:47He said someone was outside our tent last night.
13:50Hannah nodded and said she heard it too, and noted that whoever it was walked around the
13:53tent more than once, and it could have been more than one person.
13:57I asked the entire group if anyone got up to pee last night, and that maybe that's what
14:01we heard.
14:03Tim responded that he did go pee, but that he thought he saw a figure crouched near the
14:07fire pit around 4am.
14:09We searched the area, and we found footprints in the ground circling all three tents.
14:14But in a spot where the dirt was a little wetter, more like mud, one of the footprints was
14:18very clearly from a bare human foot, not shoes or boots.
14:24This made the whole thing even stranger.
14:26They let into the woods and vanished.
14:29We tried to joke about it, saying maybe it was a crazy hiker or prankster, but it didn't
14:33feel like a joke.
14:35That night, we stayed up later, talking nervously around a much bigger fire.
14:40We kept our flashlights close.
14:42Around 2am, we heard that awful sound of the crunching of leaves in the distance, but this
14:47time, there was a voice.
14:50It was a low voice, too quiet to understand, but definitely human.
14:55Marcus snapped on his flashlight, and for a split second, we saw who it was.
15:00It was a man, fully naked, crouched behind one of the trees nearby.
15:04He scrambled back into the trees like an animal that just got exposed.
15:08All of us were completely shook.
15:10We were too scared to even break off to go into our tents.
15:14Staying out in the open with all five of us together just felt safer.
15:18Hannah suggested packing up and leaving, but Marcus and I said that was a horrible idea.
15:23Packing up camp this late and finding our way back to the car would not only be extremely
15:27difficult, but also extremely terrifying, worrying that that man was behind us, following us.
15:33That night was the worst night yet, and maybe one of the worst nights of my life.
15:37I didn't get a single second of sleep.
15:40I was wide awake, and perhaps that may have saved me or my belongings at the very least.
15:46However many hours had passed before I heard the distant sound of a stick snapping or a leaf
15:50crunching, I said out loud, please let it be a f***ing deer, under my breath.
15:56A few moments of silence passed before a voice from out in the woods said, I see you guys.
16:02It was not any of my friends.
16:04I didn't know if any of my friends were awake and also heard it, but I heard none of them
16:08react, so I guess I was too scared to be the only one reacting.
16:13What happened next, I never would have expected though.
16:16I heard my tent shift ever so slightly, which caused me to shoot up and look at the tent zipper,
16:21and it started to slowly move down.
16:24I started to scream at the top of my lungs, causing my friends to also start screaming.
16:29Whoever was on the other side of my tent took off I presume, but I can't know for sure.
16:34All I know is all of us yelled at each other to communicate through the tents.
16:38I zipped the zipper back up fully, and I didn't hear breathing or footsteps again that night.
16:44I didn't fall asleep.
16:45I watched as the morning sun slowly started lighting up the place.
16:49At dawn, we packed everything and left.
16:52On the hike back to the car, the tension didn't leave us.
16:56At the ranger station, we told them everything.
16:59The ranger listened carefully, then said they've had reports.
17:02A man, maybe more than one, living out there.
17:05Some said they steal things, and others said worse.
17:08I don't know what worse meant, we didn't ask.
17:11We laughed it off in the car, but it didn't really feel funny to me.
17:15I don't think I can ever go camping again after that, especially after the zipper thing.
17:19It was bad that the distance encountered by a man, there's no sign of it.
17:26I needed to hang about it.
17:27Let's go there andера types.
