The director discussed that Bruce Lee debate, violence against women in his films, Harvey Weinstein, retirement and more while visiting 'The Joe Rogan Experience' podcast.
00:00I'm a little hesitant to talk about this because I don't want this to be the only thing that people pull from this show.
00:06Quentin Tarantino addressed his career controversies in a wide-ranging discussion with Joe Rogan.
00:11While visiting the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the Oscar-winning writer and director discussed everything from the Bruce Lee fight in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
00:19to violence against female characters and his history with producer Harvey Weinstein.
00:24When addressing the Bruce Lee fight in Once Upon a Time, which was criticized for depicting the martial arts legend as a show-off who gets bested by Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt,
00:32Rogan pointed out that a lot of people thought the director made Bruce Lee into an a**hole.
00:37I can understand his daughter having a problem with it. It's her f**king father, all right? I get that. But anybody else, go s**k.
00:46Tarantino also added, if you look at it, it's obvious Cliff tricked him. That's how he was able to beat him. It's explained a bit more in the book.
00:53At one point, the criticism of Jennifer Jason Leigh's character Daisy Domergue being repeatedly beaten by Kurt Russell's John Ruth in The Hateful Eight was brought up,
01:02something Tarantino called bull s**t.
01:04There's nothing that happens to her that couldn't have happened to a man in that same situation.
01:08If instead of Daisy Domergue, it's Big Bill Shelley, a man who's 250 pounds and a big Grizzly Adams beard,
01:14you wouldn't think s**t about Kurt Russell smacking him all the time.
01:17Well, I'm having it happen to a girl who's just as bad as Big Bill Shelley because I'm not playing f**king favorites.
01:23The two also discuss Harvey Weinstein, who was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 after being found guilty of rape and sexual assault.
01:31The director claimed a certain degree of the producer's behavior was known by everybody, including the major actors who worked with him.
01:37He said the Weinstein situation made him sad, saying in part,
01:40I wish I had talked to the guy. I wish I had sat him down and had the uncomfortable conversation.
01:45I didn't know about any rapes or anything like that.
01:48I chalked it up to the boss chasing the secretary around the desk.
01:51He was making unwanted advances.
01:53That's how I looked at it. I don't think anybody talked to him about it.
01:56And the thing about it is, everybody who was in his orbit knew about it.
02:00Elsewhere, Tarantino also discussed his pending retirement plans after his next yet-to-be-announced 10th and final film.
02:06I don't know what the next story is going to be. I imagine it will be more epilogue-y.
02:11Once Upon a Time was a big one. I hope to do two more books and a play, and then we'll see what we are.
02:16Tarantino is currently promoting his new 400-page novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,
02:20which expands the story from his acclaimed film.
