00:00Damien Chazelle is opening up about the polarizing reception to his most recent film, Babylon.
00:05This episode of THR News is brought to you by Last Flight Home from MTV Documentary Films and Paramount Plus
00:12for your Academy Awards consideration for Best Documentary Feature.
00:16The film focuses on Hollywood's transition from silent films to the sound era in the 1920s,
00:21and its cast includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, and Jean Smart.
00:26Chazelle spoke to Insider ahead of the film's UK release and was asked how he felt about the film
00:31currently holding a 55% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
00:35Once the filmmaker finishes the movie, then it sort of becomes the audiences,
00:39and that includes the critics, includes everyone, and everyone's gonna have a different take on the film,
00:43and I think they're all legitimate. Then it becomes the world's movie in a way.
00:47The Oscar-winning filmmaker continued,
00:49I do think at a certain point a movie represents a moment in time and a moment in history.
00:53You finish the film, you send it off, and then I think it's time to really move on at some level,
00:58other than the talking about it that one needs to do to promote it.
01:01As for Babylon in particular, the director noted,
01:04we all knew the movie was gonna ruffle some feathers and get some people mad,
01:08and I think that's good. More movies should do that.
01:10The film has definitely stirred some debate,
01:12especially after bombing at the box office with less than $15 million to date.
01:17I've never done nothing except disappoint people my whole life.
01:20But I made it on my terms, not theirs.
01:24Yet the film has remained part of the awards season circuit,
01:26having been nominated for five Golden Globes, including a win for Best Score.
01:31Babylon also received nine nominations for Sunday's Critics' Choice Awards,
01:35with its lone win coming for Best Production Design.
