00:00How many people live in poverty in the EU?
00:07Nearly 2 in 10 people in the EU are considered poor. In other words, 17.3% of the population
00:16have difficulties or great difficulties to make ends meet. The latest rate reported by Eurostat
00:22represents a slight improvement compared to 2023 when it stood at 19.1% and is almost a 10%
00:32improvement from 2015. But some percentages across the block are still way higher than that.
00:39For example, in Greece it's almost 67%, the highest rate of people in poverty among all EU countries.
00:48Neighboring Bulgaria is next with 37%, followed by Slovakia at almost 29%. Over the past decade,
00:57the rate of people in poverty has risen almost exclusively in Northern Europe, Denmark, Finland,
01:04Sweden and, outside the EU, Norway. It also rose in France, the only such result among the bloc's
01:12four biggest economies. At the same time, many Eastern and Southern European nations have
01:17slashed their poverty rates by dozens of percentage points, with Cyprus leading the way in the EU,
01:25followed by Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania.
