How are poverty levels around the EU as the French rate hits a 30-year high?

In the past three years, at least 11 EU countries have seen an increase in poverty levels. Women and young adults are more likely to face poverty or social exclusion.

00:00How are poverty levels around the EU as the French poverty rate hits a 30-year high?
00:10In 2024, over 1 in 5 people in the EU was at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
00:17Bulgaria, Romania and Greece reported the highest shares of people at risk of poverty.
00:23France has also reported worrying numbers.
00:25Here, the poverty rate has reached its highest level since 1996, rising from 14.4% in 2022 to 15.4% in 2023.
00:36At the EU level, more than one-fifth of people living in households with dependent children were at a slightly higher risk of poverty or social exclusion than those without.
00:47In Italy, living conditions altered depending on nationality.
00:50In 2023, 30.4% of families with at least one foreign citizen were reported at risk of poverty, while this figure was much lower, at 6.3% for families composed entirely of Italians.
01:05Women, young adults, people with a low level of educational attainment and unemployed people were also, on average, more likely to be at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2024 than other groups within the EU population.
01:19For instance, in Cyprus, 18.5% of women were at risk of poverty or social exclusion compared to 15.6% of men.
