The Hollywood Reporter predicts the Tony Award Nominations for 2017.
Transcript
00:00There's no business like show, business like the Tony nominees are almost here.
00:05That's right, the annual award show Celebrating Excellence in Live Broadway Theater
00:08will be announcing this year's nominees on Tuesday.
00:12The Hollywood Reporter's got you covered ahead of the big announcement
00:14with chief theater critic David Rooney and awards columnist Scott Feinberg
00:18offering their predictions and analysis on what's to come.
00:22So both agree there's no Goliath this year and we're unlikely to have a repeat
00:25of what Feinberg calls last year's Hamiltonies, referring of course to Alexander Hamilton.
00:32My name is Alexander Hamilton.
00:34Rooney is expecting multiple nominations, however, for Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812,
00:40Dear Evan Hansen, and Hello Dolly.
00:42As for plays, Rooney says,
00:44The strength of the ensemble work in Oslo, A Doll's House, Part 2, The Little Foxes,
00:49and the now closed production of August Wilson's Jitney should boost their numbers
00:53with acting and maybe directing nods.
00:56He's also predicting the musical Come From Away to Come Away with wide mentions,
01:00including Best Musical, Book, and more.
01:03This prediction matches up with The Hollywood Reporter's mathematical forecast for Best Musical as well.
01:08The Hollywood Reporter's Ben Zasmer has employed statistics to predict the Oscars and the Tonys,
01:12and his data-driven model correctly picked 18 of 24 Tonys last year.
01:17His model uses only numerical inputs.
01:20He's got Come From Away at the top of the Best Musical list this year with 86.7%.
01:32There's a lot more to check out in our preview articles for the Tony noms on THR.com,
01:36including Rooney threatening to lead the pack with pitchforks if the Tony nominating committee members omit Bette Midler this year.
01:43That could get dangerous.
01:45Broadway fans, who do you expect to be nominated on Tuesday?
01:47And who do you want to win?
01:49Let me know in the comments, guys.
